I don't understand why the status on this was incomplete. [Bug 227592] [NEW] openssh-server install does not create privilege separation user sshd
Public bug reported: When I installed the openssh-server package on 8.04, it did not create the sshd privilege separation user, which causes the /etc/init.d/ssh script to fail to start sshd at boot time. The problem turns out to be in the openssh-server.postinst post install script. This script looks for the presence of user sshd, and does not run adduser if it already exists. However, I had installed NIS, and my NIS server had an sshd account; therefore the postinst script did not add a local sshd user. At reboot, the order of the scripts in /etc/rc2.d is to first run the ssh script, then run the nis script. Since nis has not started when ssh runs, there is no user sshd, and the ssh script fails with a message like, Privilege separation user sshd does not exist. At install time, however, the NIS server was running, so sshd started (apparently the remote sshd account is good enough) and no error was reported. When I ran the adduser line in openssh-server.postinst by hand, the problem at boot time goes away, and sshd starts correctly at the next boot. I believe the correct fix is to grep for the sshd user in /etc/passwd in the postinst script, and run adduser to create a local user if it is not found, rather than using getent to detect the presence of sshd. (Apparently getent will find an NIS account, which you don't want.) It makes no sense for the sshd user to be on a remote NIS server; it should always be a local account. ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- openssh-server install does not create privilege separation user sshd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/227592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Hmm, ok sounds like for at least some people the issue is resolved. emk2203, I'm curious if you have the crash after fully updating Hardy - you mentioned upgrading -nvidia, do you mean to Hardy's latest or to a newer version from nVidia? Merlin, I can't say for sure if you have the same issue as everyone else, although it does sound roughly similar. It's possible we have more than one bug going around though. Anyway, given that it seems the issue has resolved for at least some people, I'm going to drop the milestone. I suspect we have a case of a core main issue plus some similar secondary issues, and that the main issue resolved. ** Changed in: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu Hardy) Target: ubuntu-8.04.1 = None -- [nvidia] GL xscreensavers crashed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110125 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 222931] Re: Gparted can't resize NTFS
I still don't know how to describe it properly... This time I'm trying to describe the workaround or quasi-fix. After tweaking it for a while, my hypothesis was that gparted was looking for some information about the bad clusters which had never been created on the NTFS partition (or somewhere else?). My theory was that the Windows hard disk utilities might be able to create the required information, but after that it gets really fuzzy in a bunch of mysterious Japanese explanations that I couldn't fully follow. Basically I used the disk checker from inside of Windows. At first it wouldn't do anything useful, but when I tweaked one of the few settings it gave me a warning and seed to do something more. That still wasn't enough to satisfy gparted, but some more reboots triggered the non-Windows checkdisk function, and after that it appears that gparted was at least able to find the bad cluster information. At this point I was mostly working with the latest bootable gparted CD, but that one was still unable to resize the NTFS partition for some reason. However, I used the version of gparted on the Hardy Heron CD, and that was finally able to do it. P.S. There was still some residual nastiness... I'll give the outline in case someone else in a similar boat winds up here... The swap partition had used up my last primary. To make the extended partition I had to unmount the swap partition that the Hardy Heron bootable CD was using, destroy the swap partition, shuffle things around, create an extended partition, and then recreate the swap partition and install Hardy Heron. However, at that point the original Gutsy Gibbon partition had an fstab file that referred to a non-existent swap partition, so I had to manually edit that file to add the swap information from the new Hardy Heron fstab. So far everything seems to be working properly. P.P.S. About the ultimate cause, I suspect that it was some kind of non- standard optimization by the Sharp people. This machine has a number of peculiarities that cause problems with Ubuntu. The most annoying is that the network adapter still doesn't initialize properly, even in Hardy Heron. Each time I boot, I have to right click on the network and unselect Enable Networking, and then do it again and select it as enabled, and after about 10 seconds it will connect to the network. There's also a problem with the display driver that freezes it once in a while in Gutsy, but I haven't used Heron enough to know if that bug has been fixed. -- Gparted can't resize NTFS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222931 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 218760] Re: Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails
I can confirm this behavior on a Thinkpad R61 7733A82 (with Intel graphics) on a ThinkPad Essential Port Replicator while running 64-bit Ubuntu with a USB to parallel-port-printer accessory. This bug also appears to be a kernel *regression*. This was not an issue in Gutsy. Now, the upgrade has left Gutsy's 2.6.22 kernel sitting around, and I find I can boot Hardy with that kernel; when I do so, this bug is not present. DaveAbrahams: am I correct to interpret your posts as saying that the DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH workaround worked for you? It does not work for me. [Bug 180087] Re: Processes tab causes GLib error
Well I was able to fix the problem AND keep my icon set, though the average user isn't going to want to go through the hassle of this VERY ugly fix. It seems that the system monitor doesn't like to use .svg images as icons; rather it likes .png images. So to resolve this issue I had to 'hide' my firefox icon originally found in /home/.icons/custom_set/scalable/apps/firefox.svg in a new folder I created within that same director (named whatever you choose, I choose firefox. Then I tracked down where the default firefox icons were kept, which was in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/icons/. I think the really important one here is mozicon128.png as /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox-3.0 is linked to mozicon128.png. So I opened up Gimp and saved my original firefox.svg icon as a 128px x 128px .png (and as a 16x16 and 48x48, just to be safe as files of these sizes also exist in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/icons/) named mozicon128.png (and mozicon16.png and mozicon50.png) to a convenient folder. Then I replaced the files in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/icons/ with my newly created files--you need root privileges for this. The last thing I had to do was change the path for my firefox panel launcher. For this I choose my original .svg icon in it's newly created folder in /home/.icons.../firefox/. So now firefox and the system monitor work together in harmony. But it took me an hour of looking for the various icons and testing different situations out. If someone follows my instructions here, then they will probably be ready to go in 15-20 minutes, maybe less. But it is an awful lot of work and if other icons cause similar issues then the whole process will start over again. So with that said, the System Monitor should be programmed to find more suitable icons if it doesn't like the one that is set as the user's preference. If it comes across a .svg then if should skip it and move on to the next directory until it finds a suitable .png file instead--as the panel, nautilus, and all other programs do. A .svg icon should not keep the system monitor from running. So I agree with Frank. I've attached the icon causing the issue. The original path was /home/.icons/CURRENT ICON SET/scalable/apps/firefox.png ** Attachment added: firefox.svg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14248577/firefox.svg -- Processes tab causes GLib error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/180087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Here is a part of the log produced by the Evolution: GET /exchange HTTP/1.1 Soup-Debug-Timestamp: 1210055753 Soup-Debug: SoupSessionSync 1 (0x8b4dc10), SoupMessage 2 (0x846e418), SoupSocket 2 (0x8e12940) Host: mail.company.com Authorization: NTLM TlRMTVNTUAABBoIAMAAw User-Agent: Evolution/2.22.1 HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily Soup-Debug-Timestamp: 1210055754 Soup-Debug: SoupMessage 2 (0x846e418) Location: https://mail.company.com/exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?url=https://mail.company.com/exchangereason=0replaceCurrent=1 Set-Cookie: sessionid=; path=/; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:00 GMT Set-Cookie: cadata=; path=/; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:00 GMT Connection: close Content-Length: 0 GET /exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?url=https://mail.company.com/exchangereason=0replaceCurrent=1 HTTP/1.1 Soup-Debug-Timestamp: 1210055755 Soup-Debug: SoupSessionSync 1 (0x8b4dc10), SoupMessage 2 (0x846e418), SoupSocket 3 (0x8e12b38), restarted Host: mail.company.com User-Agent: Evolution/2.22.1 Authorization: NTLM TlRMTVNTUAABBoIAMAAw HTTP/1.1 200 OK Soup-Debug-Timestamp: 1210055757 Soup-Debug: SoupMessage 2 (0x846e418) Cache-Control: no-cache Pragma: no-cache Content-Length: 8349 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Expires: -1 Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727 X-OWA-Version: 8.1.240.5 Date: Tue, 06 May 2008 06:37:17 GMT ** (evolution:19205): WARNING **: Invalid uri 'owaauth.dll' (evolution:19205): libsoup-CRITICAL **: soup_message_set_request: assertion `SOUP_IS_MESSAGE (msg)' failed e-data-server-ui-Message: Key file does not have key 'exchange:__qliu;[EMAIL PROTECTED]' in group 'Passwords-Exchange' From this, I can see evolution got an invalid URI 'owaauth.dll'. Such URI is the used as the POST URI of a form-based authentication of OWA. Here is the HTML code from the OWA authentication page: form action=owaauth.dll method=POST name=logonForm autocomplete=off input type=hidden name=destination value=https://mail.company.com/exchange; input type=hidden name=flags value=0 input type=hidden name=forcedownlevel value=0 Our company uses a customized HTML page as the form-based authentication page. Here, the action URI is a relative URI containing only owaauth.dll. It is relative to https://mail.company.com/exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?url=https://mail.company.com/exchangereason=0replaceCurrent=1;. So the actual absolute URI should be https://mail.company.com/exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll;. Firefox and Internet Explorer both have the correct behavior, while evolution- exchange connector thought owaauth.dll is an absolute URI (though in most cases, it is an absolute URI like /exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll). The fix should be parsing the POST URIs per standard like Firefox and IE do. -- Evolution will not authenticate on Exchange https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207723 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
