[Bug 250444] [NEW] Multiple regressions in dnsmasq 2.43, merge to 2.45 needed

2008-07-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dnsmasq

Release 2.43 has been merged in intrepid to fix a security issue.
However this release introduces multiple regressions that have been fixed in
releases 2.44 and 2.45 :

version 2.44
Fix crash when unknown client attempts to renew a DHCP
lease, problem introduced in version 2.43. Thanks to
Carlos Carvalho for help chasing this down.

Fix potential crash when a host which doesn't have a lease
does DHCPINFORM. Again introduced in 2.43. This bug has
never been reported in the wild.

Fix crash in netlink code introduced in 2.43. Thanks to
Jean Wolter for finding this.

version 2.45
Fix total DNS failure in release 2.43 unless --min-port
specified. Thanks to Steven Barth and Grant Coady for
bugreport. Also reject out-of-range port spec, which could
break things too: suggestion from Gilles Espinasse.

[Bug 250459] [NEW] Example in snmpcmd man page shows wrong parameter

2008-07-21 Thread Omahn
Public bug reported:

In the manual page for snmpcmd under the output options section, there's
the documentation for the -Ov parameter but the example command line
given uses -Oe (see below). Just a minor error.

-OvDisplay the varbind value only, not the OID:

[Bug 236830] Re: cifs does not support kerberos authentication

2008-07-21 Thread wzzrd
I'ld really like to help test this, but I am a bit crippled by our
firewall: not apt for me. Can you provide me with the packages you used
to install cifs.spnego? I downloaded the new kernel at home yesterday,
but I am unable to find Samba packages containing the new backported
helper.

Can you provide me with (a link to) the Samba packages you used for
this, Steve?

Killed in what way? If you apply this patch, you'll get exactly the
same bacula as from proposed repository, so it won't help.

[Bug 226185] Re: update-resolv-conf script does not restore old values

2008-07-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
Thanks for your bug report.

update-resolv-conf uses /sbin/resolvconf (if installed) -a and -d
options to handle the update of the /etc/resolv.conf file. If you have
resolvconf installed, the /etc/resolv.conf file should no longer be
edited by hand, otherwise your changes will be lost at next update :
resolvconf doesn't backup/restore configurations, it builds resolv.conf
dynamically.

Try :
$ cp /etc/resolv.conf my_backup_resolv.conf
$ echo nameserver 10.0.0.1 | sudo /sbin/resolvconf -a eth0
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf

$ echo nameserver 192.168.0.1 | sudo /sbin/resolvconf -a eth1
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf

$ sudo /sbin/resolvconf -d eth1
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo mv my_backup_resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

You can see that if the original configuration of the /etc/resolv.conf
file was created by resolvconf, everything works ok.

So you should decide if you want to use resolvconf to handle your
/etc/resolv.conf file : if yes, you should provide the original
configuration using /sbin/resolvconf -a to make sure it will not be
overwritten by update-resolv-conf. If not, you should create scripts to
backup/restore your resolv.conf file and use them (instead of update-
resolv-conf) in your openvpn config files.

AFAICT the behavior you're experiencing is the way resolvconf is
designed to work. I'll close this bug as invalid, please feel free to
reopen it if you think I did not properly understand.

Could specify the actual code you've used to create the store procedure

What's strange is that IT ACCEPTS the non-real dates in a regular

 it stops working.

Could you list which sql statement you're using and the outcome you

[Bug 106819] Re: openvpn blocks normal network connection

2008-07-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could you please post your openvpn config files (client-side and server-
side), the log files extracts corresponding to a VPN connection (client-
side and server-side), and possibly the result of the ip route show
command on the client and on the server, just before the VPN is
established and just after ?

Did anyone experiencing this issue upgrade to hardy and, if yes, is the
issue still present ?

[Bug 250549] Re: Wrong interface speed from snmpd running as snmp user

2008-07-21 Thread Bjorn Ruud
** Description changed:

snmpd reports wrong interface speed when it is run as the snmp user.
Running snmpd as root gives the correct result. Debug output suggests a

[Bug 41794] Re: VPN tunnel is closed before network drives are unmounted when shutting down

2008-07-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
I would say it all depends on what your configuration looks like. In one
case you may have some openvpn bits lying on a NFS or CIFS mount, so you
prefer to unmount those at the very last time. In another case you
established an NFS or CIFS mount over your OpenVPN tunnel, and you
prefer to shutdown the network filesystems before you shutdown OpenVPN
itself.

If you are in the second case, you should probably leverage the down and
down-pre options of OpenVPN to close the NFS/CIFS filesystems you opened
over the tunnel before you shutdown OpenVPN...

[Bug 226185] Re: update-resolv-conf script does not restore old values

2008-07-21 Thread Cory Albrecht
This bug report is *not* for resolvconf, but for OpenVPN package, is
indicated at the top of this page. Specifically, it is for the script,
'/etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf', whch is is included in the OpenVPN
Ubuntu package.

I do know how resolvconf works, which is I say why this script included
with the Ubuntu package for OpenVPN is buggy. Take the following case:

I have /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/{base|head|etc...} empty because
while my laptop is most often at home and the line 'nameserver
192.168.0.1' is appropriate there, it will not be if I am out somewhere.
Thus 'base' 'head' are blank, let the nameserver be assigned via DHCP.

Then I go to a client where use their wifi and IP, gateway, and
nameserver are assigned by their DHCP. I start openvpn so I can access
my home LAN for whatever reason.

Because of the way '/etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf' script is written,
it trashes the nameserver lines added by DHCP for my client's wifi,
overwriting them with whatever was specified by my openvpn server at
home so I can access all the hosts there by name. Whatever nameserver
that was provided by the DHCP on my client's wifi is now gone. I can
still access the Internet, websurfing and whatnot, because my named at
home is answering all queries across the VPN link.

When I shut down openvpn on my laptop, the '/etc/openvpn/update-resolv-
conf' script simply runs 'resolvconf -d ${dev}.inet'. This deletes the
nameserver lines which were supplied by openvpn settings on VPN connect.
Because the original nameserver line was overwritten and not stored, my
resolv.conf no longer has a nameserver line in it. While technically I
still have access to the 'Net, since packets will get routed, for all
practical purposes I do not because domain names cannot be resolved into
addresses.

Simply put, the '/etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf' provided with the
Ubuntu package for OpenVPN does not play nice in an environment where
other processes like DHCP clients may also be altering
'/etc/resolv.conf'.

[Bug 204737] Re: ldap.conf example file looses space between gutsy and hardy

2008-07-21 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

You will only be prompted on upgrade if you *have* changed your
/etc/ldap/ldap.conf; if you have not modified it, the config file will
be updated silently for you. I have confirmed that this works correctly
in a pristine gutsy environment upgrading to hardy.

I'm therefore closing this bug as invalid, since the package is handling
this conffile correctly.

Confirming as a regression in hardy.

Strangely, I see EXTERNAL as an option if I connect using ldapi:///, but

[Bug 250655] [NEW] samba daemon deadlocks

2008-07-21 Thread Jaap Versteegh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I have firefox's (3.0) profile stored on a samba share. Ocasionally (about
twice a day) when entering data into a webcontrol, firefox freezes. The cause
seems to be the samba daemon on the server that deadlocks. A new samba daemon
is spawned after a few seconds, but the dead daemon remains in memory and also
keeps locking the firefox profile directory. It can only be killed with kill -9.
Connecting to the dead daemon with gdb produces the following callstack:

[Bug 250424] [NEW] mouse driver in xorg completely misreads the microsoft comfort mouse 3000

Using the mouse driver in my xorg.config there are several issues with

my mouse

Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Name Microsoft Microsoft Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel
Option Device /dev/input/mice
Option Protocol ExplorerPS/2
Option Buttons 8
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

This mouse has what i count to be 8 buttons. right click, left click,
middle click (scroll wheel), scroll wheel up, scroll wheel down, tilt
wheel right, tilt wheel left, and thumb button. This makes 8 buttons.
Looking at the output from xev it says the thumb button is button 9.
This is one button too many. Also in xev the tilt wheel left and right,
what i think are buttons 6 and 7, cause no events. This is confirmed by
these two comments in a different bug report. while this was mentioned
in the bug it was not what the bug was about.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/8
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/9

does not always fire an event. I know I really need to stop buying
microsoft mice but they are always so attractively priced at the store.

I updated my system to Hardy one week ago. And the problem above haven't

upgrade, the startup process never stoped like before.

Thanks! I think this problem has been solved.

[Bug 250432] [NEW] force version doesn't work in Hardy

2008-07-21 Thread Ilan Tal
Public bug reported:

In going from Open Office 2.4.0 to 2.4.1, there is a problem with Calc with
Sheet names in Hebrew. When the sheet is active all is OK, but when you press
on another sheet, the inactive sheets don't display the Hebrew characters
properly.
Since I know 2.4.0 works properly, and I don't know of any work around for
2.4.1, I wanted to drop back to 2.4.0.
The Synaptic Package Manager has a nice feature under the Package menu to force
the version. This is just what I need, so I was happy to find it. I highlighted
the calc package, pressed the force version menu option and found 2 choices:
2.4.0 and 2.4.1. Beautiful - I chose 2.4.0 and told it to force it back. It
told me that I had to force most of the other Open Office suite back to 2.4.0.
OK, no problem - do that as well.
I went and executed the command and it removed my Open Office completely! Not
exactly what I was looking for. I fixed broken packages and I was back to 2.4.1
with its problems in Hebrew names.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Ilan

[Bug 250433] [NEW] Clarify Save a copy grayed out

2008-07-21 Thread Arno Teigseth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Would it be possible for evince to somehow explain _why_ it cannot print
or save a document, instead of just graying out the Save a copy menu
item?

I know I can just right-click a PDF link and Save as..., it's just
confusing when I don't get to know why I can't save the document...

This could maybe be done with a pop-up [dialog], a tooltip, changed
title bar text, some info showing up in the Properties window, an
information bar... ?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109429 says:

Could it be due to the access/copy rights on specific pdf files you're viewing?
you can override these restrictions by setting

[Bug 248864] Re: pdf printing stopped working in gutsy

2008-07-21 Thread Matthew Arnold
Turns out I was mistaken, it is not a bug as such, but it is a feature
that I feel should be changed and/or have improved error reporting.

Essentially I was caught out by the dialog retaining the previous print
range. I did not spot it because the start page had been set very high,
so instead of some printing I got nothing.

I see no advantage to having things this way, and it is certainly a
nuisance to me. Also if an error dialog was created instead of a non-
descriptive log entry it would be helpful.

Now I'm not sure if the problem lies with evince or cups-pdf, but is it
possible to have the print page range reset after a successful print?

[Bug 250438] [NEW] a xen-create(d) Dapper DomU does not run on a hardy Dom0

2008-07-21 Thread orange
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-xen-server

Hi all,

trying to get some dapper domU's running on a hardy dom0.

Not much success, so I figured I'd try a dapper instance made from

xen-create-image --hostname hostname --ip ip --gateway gateway
--netmask 255.255.255.0 --size=5GB --dist=dapper

When I use xm create test.orange-tree.alt.za.cfg -c

I get a whole host of the following errors:
[ 10.543768] tty ttyz8: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version
[ 10.543814] tty ttyz9: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version
[ 10.543854] tty ttyz9: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version
[ 10.543892] tty ttyza: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be

.

[ 10.544785] xen console-0: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version
[ 10.545333] vbd vbd-51713: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version
[ 10.545373] vbd vbd-51713: uevent: unsupported action-string; this will be
ignored in a future kernel version

And after hitting

 * Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server... [ ok ]
 * Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)[ ok ]

Nothing further appears on the console, but the network is up (can't
actually log on to the machine).

If I create a user on the machine (by manually mounting it on a loopback
device) and then bring up the instance, logging on via ssh gives:
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied

-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied
-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied

any ideas? or is running a dapper guest on a hardy host not doable?

Perhaps an old kernel needs to be used for the dapper instance?

Any hints?

TJ, for the purpose of driving forward this bug fix, did you test that
the version currently in hardy-proposed works for gutsy upgrades? If
that's the case, we should move it to hardy-updates and start another
SRU for the remaining problems you noticed.

If the remaining problems you had still apply to the gutsy-hardy-
proposed upgrade, please be more specific. Thanks!

P.S. Convert package to CDBS - not a change adequate for an SRU

Fix total DNS failure in release 2.43 unless --min-port
specified. Thanks to Steven Barth and Grant Coady for

not get the hp backend URI and so it sets up the queue with the usb

up the queue.

Hi Anton,

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't work in my PC. have still the
2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4 version.

Could be related to the system configuration. I don't master the package
management system. Perhaps the new version is in the english repository,
but not in the spanish one. I don't know. I've tried from synaptic, from
the update-manager and from the command line you provided me, with no
sucess.

Nick: While at this point I don't remember exact details of further
manifestations of problems like this bug, I can say that this entire
issue has gone away for good with the advanced partitioner rewrite in

believe they're generally less severe and more tractable than the
problems with using qtparted.)

First step is to back up your .mozilla folder. then remove the
places.sqlite file from it and if that fixed it see if you can open
that file with the sqlite3 program that should be available on your

[Bug 224085] Re: [Hardy] Can't auto-mount my USB harddrives!

2008-07-21 Thread Izzy
It has. I just upgraded yesterday and ran into the same problem with
8.04.1 (so even the first fix pack does have this problem).

If I look closer on that file, it seems that somebody could not decide
what policy to take - both times it is context=default, and the only
difference is that one block allows all and the other denies all - which
makes absolutely no sense. I guess this somebody wanted to change the
behavior from allowing all to everybody to allow only to trusted
users. So what you did by commenting out the two lines, would probably
also have been achieved by changing the policy user=0 into policy
group=users in the last block :)

Strange though: It seems to work now for me - but there are no more
icons put to the desktop. So if I insert some SD-card and copy data to
it, I have to search the card later in order to safely remove it. Or
does that get fixed after the next reboot/login? I only restarted the
hal daemon up to now.

[Bug 80385] Re: Could save some space by omitting /boot/vmlinuz from live filesystem

2008-07-21 Thread Colin Watson
Oliver: while this is true, I think it should indeed be a separate bug.
/lib/modules is significantly harder to do anything about in Ubiquity.
It would be possible, and merely fiddly rather than difficult, to fill
in parts of /lib/modules from the initramfs if they aren't in the live
filesystem. However, in order for this to do any good, you have to
remove the modules from the live filesystem as well. Now, what happens
if the modules in question don't get loaded by the initramfs for
whatever reason but are needed later on? You'd have to copy /lib/modules
from the initramfs to the unionfs as well, and that would take up a lot
of memory. Even if you copied only those modules that haven't been
loaded, that would cause reliability problems: unloading and then
reloading any module that had been loaded during the initramfs would
fail.

I think this might be tractable for specific devices, but so far I
haven't thought of a general-purpose way to exploit this duplication.

[Bug 250382] Re: synaptic cannot AltTab to synaptic when a dialog is displayed

2008-07-21 Thread Philip Ashmore
I'm pretty sure you're missing the point here.
In kate I can select the File - open menu to display the file open dialog.
I can switch away from kate with AltTab and back again. As the file open
dialog is modal, switching to kate results in switching to kate with it's modal
dialog on top.
I never indicated that I could (or would want to) switch to synaptic without
also switching to it's modal dialog.
The problem, to rephrase, is that I cannot switch to synaptic using AltTab
when it is displaying a modal dialog. Not the main window, not the modal dialog.

I'm not using compiz fusion so a simple list is displayed. You can see
synaptic in the list, but AltTab skips over it!

[Bug 250396] Re: uninstalling KDE guidance power manager doesn't remove it from kicker

I respectfully beg to differ.

kde-guidance-powermanager along with klipper, sound volume, amarok etc

probably has a different / better name for this.

One applet that catches my eye when I log in is a green ball - the

It seems to be able to add and remove itself from the KDE panel just
fine.
