[Bug 260799] [NEW] cd/dvd autoplay defaults fail

2008-08-24 Thread Curaga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Xubuntu 8.04.1 fresh install

Cannot play either cd's nor dvd's by the autoplay feature - Totem shows a
location not found error.
The bug is that the defaults in Settings / Removable devices / Multimedia are
cdda:/ and dvd:/
when they should be with two slashes, aka cdda:// and dvd://.

I found a solution here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=823721

[Bug 260800] [NEW] Totem only plays first track of audio cd

2008-08-24 Thread Curaga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

CD playing in Totem sure is crippled..
First, the autoplay bug, then the need for a codec not remotely saying anything
about audio cd's (musepack etc just because one happens to depend on
libcdaudio). The Play audio cd option is always greyed out.
So the user needs to find out the way to playing a cd is via an url of cdda://
- not exactly user-friendly.

Now the bug. Totem only plays the first track of the cd. No crash, no errors,
just one track.
The same CD plays fully on Mplayer and all stand-alone players I have.

Xubuntu 8.04.1

[Bug 253831] Re: Should ship new kernel modules at same time as new kernel

2008-08-24 Thread Anders Kaseorg
That won't work, since the old images still are available (and
 therefore won't cause a conflict).

I don’t understand your objection. Note that the goal is not to
conflict with any kernel image packages, but only with new versions of
the linux-image-generic _metapackage_, which is responsible for causing
new ABI-incompatible kernel image packages to be automatically
installed.

I know that this strategy works, because we have successfully used it
for openafs kernel modules in the Debathena project
http://debathena.mit.edu/.

Apart from that, a missing kernel module (from universe) should
not block a security kernel update.

No upgrades will be blocked unless the user installs the virtualbox-ose-
modules-generic package, which is as good an indication as any that the
user _needs_ a kernel with virtualbox modules, and a security kernel
update that comes without modules is worse than useless for them. If
the user wants to make a different choice, they can either install
virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-3-generic instead of virtualbox-ose-
modules-generic, or they can install linux-image-2.6.26-5-generic anyway
when it becomes available (since only the linux-image-generic
metapackage is held back).

Even a user that does install virtualbox-ose-modules-generic will see
that the new kernel upgrade is available. I’ve tried this with apt-get,
aptitude, synaptic, adept, and update-manager—they will all notice the
conflict, and either report that updates were held back, or propose
resolving it by removing virtualbox-ose-modules-generic. In either case
it should be clear what’s going on. This is infinitely better than the
current solution which will silently break packages that the user wants
to use.

I guess you can close this entry.

Thank you for the good work !

[Bug 260807] [NEW] root FS not cleanly unmounted on SSD

2008-08-24 Thread roots
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

hi there,

a got a brand new solid state drive now running as dual boot system
drive with winxp and ubuntu hardy, the latter on ext2. the ext2
partition hosts both / and a small /home. /swap is located on my hdd but
never in use due to enough ram.

now there's some big annoyance here, as ubuntu cleanly unmounts my ssd-hosted
file system in only like one out of ten cases.
this means, that on almost every system startup, it checks my / fs, finds
errors and corrects them and after the necessary reboot, finally starts up. the
drive itself seems to be fine, win is running without problems and filechecks
and in general i don't see any data corruption whatsoever.

however, this should NOT be standard operating procedure, so i'm asking
for suggestions and solutions here! anyone?!

thanks in advance!

[Bug 260807] Re: root FS not cleanly unmounted on SSD

2008-08-24 Thread roots
if you're asking for why i am using ext2: amongst one of the
recommendations for SSDs i found that using a non-journaling fs would be
more convenient, because it reduces the write access to the drive, which
- due to the writing-weakness inherent in flash technology - should have
an impact on both performance and lifespan.

[Bug 260328] Re: Clock Preferences's location add dialog misses it's Find button

2008-08-24 Thread Thomas van der Burgt
Soemt thing I don't like about this new way is that I can't rename the location.
I live in a small village close to another village with an military airport.
With the 2.22 version I could use the data of the airport and then rename it to
my hometown. This can't be done anymore.

I also find the former way more userfriendly, it is now more difficult
to list all the locations in your country/state

[Bug 260630] Re: Mouse disappears when moved over kstars star chart

2008-08-24 Thread Stefano Maioli
Jonathan: it's not 3d, but it can still use opengl for rendering. But
still, I was mistaken, opengl support is not there yet, it's a planned
feature.

I was unable to reproduce the issue, but it still sounds X related to me. I'm
not sure if changing cursor theme could fix it.
You could try falling back to XAA acceleration, some EXA implementations are
buggy, or turning off compiz (if you're using it).

Let's see if the Xorg crew can provide some insights. Assigning to xorg
intel driver.

[Bug 60372] Re: Gnome keyboard shortcuts don't work under enlightenment

2008-08-24 Thread Hrvoje Nikšić
If keyboard shortcuts only affect metacity, how come Ctrl-Alt-L works?

The problem with Enlightenment's keyboard preferences is that it's
unaware of Gnome. For e-gnome to make sense, one should be able to
access the Gnome Run dialog or to access the screenshot taking
functionality.

If the keyboard shortcuts tool only works under Metacity, it should
probably be disabled when running under other window managers.

[Bug 259562] Re: NM0.7/Intrepid regression: No longer possible to configure LZO compression

2008-08-24 Thread Tore Anderson
It seems I can't reproduce it any longer, now it fails with «The VPN
connection 'My VPN Connection' failed because the VPN service stopped
unexpectedly» (that's a balloon popup shown by nm-applet).

I'm attaching logs from both when it seemingly was established OK but no
traffic made it through (due to the missing LZO setting, most likely),
and from when it fails completely. I've anonymised some IP addresses
and such, but other than that they should be complete.

[Bug 242801] Re: Firefox 3.0 is in english after upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy

2008-08-24 Thread Nicolas Nobelis
Hello,

I experienced the same issue during the passage from Firefox 3.0 to
Firefox 3.0.1 : all the menus were in english.

I solved the problem by reinstalling 'language-support-fr'.

By the way, the packages 'mozilla-firefox-locales-XX' should really depend on
Firefox 2, not only on 'language-support-XX' :
they are incompatible with Firefox 3, and this is misleading because it's
still possible to install them having only Firefox 3.

Regards

N.

[Bug 242801] Re: Firefox 3.0 is in english after upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy

2008-08-24 Thread Nicolas Nobelis
Erratum : I solved the aforementioned problem by reinstalling language-
pack-fr, language-pack-fr-base, language-support-fr, language-support-
translations-fr and language-support-writing-fr.

I don't know which one solved the bug...
