[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-11-02 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber

 mv /etc/rc0.d/S31umountnfs.sh /etc/rc0.d/S14umountnfs.sh
 mv /etc/rc6.d/S31umountnfs.sh /etc/rc6.d/S14umountnfs.sh

This fix is a rather old thing; it had been published more than two
years ago.

I had asked here if this solution was correct and really safe, but I did
not get any answer yet!

I'm unsure if that is the correct solution. It will most likely to break
systems that have /usr not on /. Similar problems could arise with
/usr/local/ not on / but custom modifications.

However I wonder if S15wpa-ifupdown should be moved to S41wpa-ifupdown
instead. That *should* cause less breakage and do the right thing
generally.

[Bug 211890] [NEW] [Hardy Beta] Windows shared folders not always visible.

2008-11-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi again. ;-)

Here I go with my -full patched- Hardy Heron Beta.

If you browse a Windows domain using Places--Network, you not always can see
the shared content
from the Windows computers in that domain. The funny part is that you can see
the shared folders
in the same domain in some computers, meaning it's not uniform the behavior. It
never ask for
authentication or something, it just works fine for some windows computers but
not in others. Quite
curious.

Best Regards.

Well, 2 people reported in this very thread that moving wpa-ifupdown to
S36 does not fix it. I think that's because of K16dhcdbd.sh. Name
resolution is still needed when unmounting NFS drives.

That's why the patch suggests moving up umountnfs instead of pushing
down 2 things.

creating a patch for that is not the problem. Finding the correct
solution with a proper explanation for debian/changelog is way more
challanging and important!

That does not really make sense. According to
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit, the
Knn scripts are always executed before any S script. I cannot see how
renaming S15wpa-ifupdown to S41wpa-ifupdown will interefere here.

As this is an extra indication that I have not understood the problem
completely, and given that this bug is already pretty heatly discussed,
I will take extra care before considering any change in this matter.

Looking further at it, it seems pretty obvious why renaming it to
S36wpa-ifupdown does not fix it: unmounting nfs and other filesystems
happen at S40. In order to fix this issue wpasupplicant has to be taken
down after that. Which is a real pain in debian, since wpasupplicant is
installed there in /usr/sbin, which might no longer be available at this
stage. Luckily in ubuntu it is in /sbin, though.

That's why the patch suggests moving up umountnfs instead of pushing
 down 2 things.

Yes, still I'd like to know what I'm actually doing before uploading
random patches some guys on some bug have proposed that might or might
not fix a (granted, very annoying) bug.

[Bug 252245] Re: unable to connect to windows network pc's

2008-11-02 Thread dAF2000
I don't know if this is the recent bug report about browsing windows network
pc's, but I can confirm this bug. In 8.10 browsing windows network shares
(samba) fails.
My windows shares are even no windows shares, but just smb shares from xubuntu
8.04.1 and smb shares from an embedded Linux device. It used to work in 8.04.1.
Clicking the icon Windows Network just shows nothing even after a few
refreshes. If I go to Connect to server is works fine.

Some info:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ smbtree
Password:
DAVID
\\EPIA Syntax
\\EPIA\hd /media/hd
\\EPIA\wd500/media/wd500
\\EPIA\root root filesystem

\\EPIA\website
\\EPIA\dreamboxbackup
\\EPIA\dvd
\\EPIA\pli7000 /home/david/pli7000

I had a shortcut created during 8.04 to access that //EPIA share. Now I get the
error message:
Could not open location smb://epia/ No application is registered as handling

[Bug 274069] Re: error send_packet:message too long

2008-11-02 Thread Baughn
Please don't fix this bug

The interface-mtu option is a valid method for routers to tell computers
what their MTU is, so as to avoid unnecessary fragmentation. For
example, I have a router that reports an MTU of 1412; anything above
this does indeed get fragmented.

While I would certainly be able to add the option myself, this is not
true for everyone, and there is no reason to break perfectly functional
software in order to support broken routers. Instead, I suggest
filtering out obviously bogus MTUs such as anything below 200. (There
are some very low-MTU links out there)

[Bug 290673] Re: fusesmb mount disappears - libsmbclient segfaults

2008-11-02 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
To add some more information, it doesn't always write something the logs
when it fails. Sometimes the only way you know is because the
directories suddenly appear empty and you start to get Transport

Secondly, the problem seems to occur always when you use Nautilus to

[Bug 286828] Re: CIFS share broken after upgrade from 8.04 - 8.10

2008-11-02 Thread Aron Schatz
I can also confirm this bug on Kubuntu 8.10.

Using the same mount options in 8.04 worked fine. In 8.10, files can be
created, renamed, or deleted, but are NOT able to edit.

IE: Using Kate, I can open a file but can't save it. It is able to
create its backup files.

Eclipse fails to save files as well on the mount.

Hopefully it gets fixed soon. The LinuxExtensions suggestion did not
help the problem as I never used them on this mount.

I can confirm that older clients (8.04, 7.10) can read/write/save on the
same mount with the same options just fine. Seems like a regression in
Samba.

[Bug 292836] [NEW] Cannot browse samba shares

2008-11-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In Ubuntu 8.10, samba shares cannot be browsed. A volume can be mounted
using Places-Connect to Server, but no directories or files are
visible. If gnome-commander is installed, the share can be mounted and
the *directories* can be browsed, but files cannot be seen. This is
apparently a bug in samba (discussed below)l

Example:
The following directories exist on the share:
Backup
Backup1

In Gnome Commander, the directories show up as:
Backu
Backup

The Backup directory can be opened, but nothing (unless there are two
files with the same name (with the exception of the last character) are
present.

Using Places-Connect to Server, only Backup will show, as this method
will not show a directory if it cannot get path info. In addition, if
directories oink, oink1 and oink2 are present in the share, *only* oink
will show up, as the last character being dropped off of all of them
results in oin, oink and oink.

Traces taken with wireshark show that the packets being sent from the
client system are dropping the last character of directories and files
when requesting path info. The directory information is sent earlier in
a FIND_FIRST2 response from the server side. However, a bug, possibly in
samba, drops the last character on directory requests. I will attach two
traces, both are very similar. fail was taken when connecting using
Places-Connect to Server, success was taken when connecting with
Gnome Commander.

2008-11-02 Thread flanker
Confirming Aron's recent report for Kubuntu 8.10. I'm running from the
Intrepid Live CD right now, and experiencing the issue others have
reported with being able to read/create, but not modify/overwrite files
on the share. I've tried the nounix option (below) as well as the
LinuxExtensionsEnabled = 0 option described above and they both give the
same results. The server is running the packaged version of Samba3 for
OpenWRT (more details below). This issue is of high importance to me
(upgrade show-stopper), and I'd be happy to provide any additional
information required---just let me know.

[Bug 292498] [NEW] power icon will not change status when pulling the plug

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The version of Ubuntu I'm using is 8.10 Intrepid. The package (that has
the bug) that I'm using is 2.24.0-0ubuntu8. My laptop is HP Compaq
Presario V5000. The package that I found the bug is gnome-power-manager.
The icon is part of Notification Area 2.24.1 of the panel. I expected
that when I pull the charger, the icon will change status in a second.
What happened instead is that it takes 10 or more seconds to change the
status of my computer that it is running on AC power or a battery. When
take the charger out, it will not change status until 10 or more
seconds. When I plug it back to the laptop, it does the same thing. When
I click shut down or restart, it show a message that gnome-power-
manager is running.

[Bug 256025] Re: invoke-rc.d procps start loads /etc/syctl.d before /etc/sysctl.conf

2008-11-02 Thread Scott Ritchie
Things are as they should be in Intrepid - /etc/sysctl.conf is now a
bunch of (commented out) commands for overriding the defaults, and the
system defaults are in names like /etc/sysctl.d/10-*.conf. This allows
Wine to come after them by using just /etc/sysctl.d/wine.conf

[Bug 292498] Re: power icon will not change status when pulling the plug

2008-11-02 Thread Jet
** Description changed:

When
I click shut down or restart, it show a message that gnome-power-
- manager is running.

[Bug 271252] Re: aa-logprof generates faulty output messages

2008-11-02 Thread Jesse Michael
I believe the root cause of this problem is that the lex grammar in
libapparmor used for parsing log messages is not robust enough.

I spent a bit of time instrumenting logprof and found that the garbage
characters are printed in the middle of when it calls
LibAppArmor::parse_record. This function in libapparmor uses yacc and
lex to parse log messages, but when the lex scanner encounters
characters that don't match the grammar that has been specified, the
default is to print those characters. I think that's what's happening
here.

[Bug 259278] Re: knetworkmanager will no longer connect

2008-11-02 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
This was probably already mentioned earlier, but what I have noticed is
that my wireless works just fine with DHCP and WEP/WPA networks, but if
the nm-applet (which is called network-manager-gnome in Ubuntu) is
installed knetworkmanager doesn't work, but nm-applet does. If
uninstalling nm-applet doesn't fix your problem, reinstall it and use it
instead of knetworkmanager for now. I have found it generally better at
supporting the NetworkManager core. I'm sure this will be fixed though,
but probably for the next release of Ubuntu.

[Bug 235960] Re: When I go to help in glChess, it says White wins - one of the players has died

2008-11-02 Thread geneven
This just happened to me. We were in a dead drawn king and pawns (no
pieces on either side) endgame. The game was going to end in threefold
repetition soon. We were probably on move 40-50 somewhere. I haven't had
any problems with GNU Chess ending unexpectedly. I'm in Ubuntu 8.04, I
think it is. It was one of those opposition endgames where I just had
to avoid occupying a certain square to maintain the draw.

[Bug 271252] Re: aa-logprof generates faulty output messages

2008-11-02 Thread Jesse Michael
It looks like the format for audit messages that show up in
/var/log/messages when auditd is not running changed between Hardy and
Intrepid.

The type= part of the message was after the
audit(NN.NNN:NN): part in Hardy, but before it in Intrepid and
that's likely causing the log parsing code to break.

As a temporary workaround, I think installing the auditd package so that
audit logs go to /var/log/audit/audit.log instead of /var/log/messages
might work, but I'd suggest increasing max_log_file in
/etc/audit/auditd.conf if AA is being used.

[Bug 292504] [NEW] Use embedded icons for executable files

2008-11-02 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

A new thumbnailer program for Windows Executables should be added to
nautilus in order to display their embedded icon. I am unsure if .msi
files need similar functionality. The icoutils program can already do
this, however we just need to call it in the right way.

There's also a brainstorm discussion, with a script that seems
promising:

Re: [Bug 292436] [NEW] FireGL V5200 not listed as a supported card even though it works

2008-11-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
Can you confirm whether it was listed in Jockey (Hardware Drivers)? If not,
then AMD doesn't believe this card should be working with this release. Are
you strictly referring to the packaging comments in debian/control (Which
haven't been updated in a long time)?

On Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 20:13, Eric P. Mangold [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

The release notes for Intrepid talk about certain ATI cards no longer
being supported by the proprietary FGLRX driver. My card, a FireGL V5200
in a ThinkPad T60P has *not* been listed as having support removed.

And indeed, the Intrepid version of the package (xorg-driver-fglrx
2:8.543-0ubuntu4) DOES support this video card. My laptop is running it
just fine after upgrading to Intrepid.

The problem is that the new Intrepid version of the package no longer
lists my card in the package description. The old Ubuntu 8.04 version of
the packages DOES list the FireGL V5200 as a supported card.

This caused me much confusion, and I pondered even performing the
upgrade at all. In the end, everything works, but the package should be
updated to list this card (and possible other FireGL cards) as supported
 (at least *un*officially?)

[Bug 274203] Re: Joystick detected as mouse, crashes X

2008-11-02 Thread unebaguettesvp
This is ridiculous. Why is this not marked Critical?! No games are
playable without the joystick interrupting the game window!

I tried fooling around with xorg.conf and if I don't have:
Option SendCoreEvents false
in:
Section InputDevice
 Identifier Configured Joystick
 Driver joystick
 Option Device /dev/input/event3
 Option SendCoreEvents false
EndSection
the cursor moves all the way to the upper left part of the screen.

I tried Albert Damen's fix and that didn't change anything.

It's bad enough that Linux has a bad reputation with gaming but this bug
makes Linux look even worse. Everything was working great in Hardy. This
regression makes nothing playable on my end. I should have not upgraded.

[Bug 292508] [NEW] baobab fails to start, segmentation fault

2008-11-02 Thread Sergey Burnevsky
Public bug reported:

I had a problem with baobab, it reported disk usage totally incorrect:
for a ntfs volume of 20G with only 1G free space it reported only 3.5G
used, totally missing some files (.iso, disk images). Read some other
bug reports about wrong total disk size reports and how people solved
problems by unchecking gfs in settings. Didn't have same thing here and
just tried to uncheck all the boxes there.

Baobab crashed and doesn't start anymore. In CLI I get Segmentation fault and

[Bug 292510] [NEW] Stellarium flickers if there is some activity in the background panel

2008-11-02 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: stellarium

This bug concerns both Ubuntu 8.10 and Kubuntu 8.10 with all upgrades.

In Ubuntu if there is some activity in the top panel (for example,
system monitor applet is installed) then this region of the screen
flickers in a slightly annoying way.

In Kubuntu the same bug is more annoying since the activity in the
bottom panel (for example: clock which shows the seconds) causes
flickering of a pretty big bottom area of the screen.
