[Bug 235653] Re: [SRU] ACL covering all IPv4 addresses is broken in 2.2.1

2008-12-31 Thread Charles Lepple
As a follow-up to the discussion here, libwrap replaces the old NUT ACL
functionality in the upcoming nut-2.4.0 release. This provides
application-level connection filtering using a fairly well-known ACL
syntax.

[Bug 50385] Re: samba can't be launched by a normal user (qemu related)

2008-12-31 Thread Rich
Can we please get this fixed, or edit the qemu man page on Ubuntu to
document this functionality as broken? It really upset me when I tried
to deploy this, and I ended up recompiling a custom samba package with
those two patches disabled.

[Bug 307306] Re: upgrade to 2:1.2.99.2-0ubuntu1 makes session utterly slow

2008-12-31 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Colin,

You mentioned on the upstream bug that you were able to work around the
problem by forcing the XRRGetCrtcTransform to believe it was talking to
a pre-1.3 server. Does something like the attached patch work as well?

If so, perhaps we should consider disabling this functionality until a
fix is available, since already several people have seen this problem.

[Bug 307306] Re: upgrade to 2:1.2.99.2-0ubuntu1 makes session utterly slow

2008-12-31 Thread Bryce Harrington
Regarding the real fix -- in browsing through the xserver git tree,
there's a handful of 1.3-related changes in the randr code which post-
date the version of xserver currently in jaunty. Browsing through the
changes, none jumped out at me as obvious causes for this problem, but
perhaps a newer xserver would have whatever bits that libxrandr is now
expecting.

I had keith over this last Sunday and he said he was going to put out
the 1.6 final probably within the next week or two, so perhaps we should
plan to upgrade to that version ASAP once it's out, and re-test this
bug. Meanwhile, if disabling use of the Transformations stuff with the
above patch solves the issue, we could just use that for the time being.

[Bug 257639] Re: E: The package cache file is corrupted E: _cache-open() failed, please report.

2008-12-31 Thread Jean Gold
Hello Frans,

I was speaking about Linux kernel, that is what is loaded in high memory when
booting up.
When one makes an update, if there is a new release of it and if you have
checked the option
pre-release update in the sources manager, even for a not very important
upgrade
you are proposed a partial upgrading. Since I met the bug only after my last
kernel upgrade
I supposed it could be bound with that.
The fact is that the bug mainly happens for me when I manually uninstall an
application
after testing it or using synaptic or when the sources manager updates before
closing.
greetings

Jehanx

[Bug 59039] Re: Sysvinit wants to install and replace upstart

2008-12-31 Thread Christof Arn
Same problem for me. I use a 64-bit-Ubuntu and updated from 7.10 to 8.4 and
then directly to 8.10. Synaptics tells me, it want to install sysvinit ant to
remove startup-tasks, system-services, ubuntu-minimal, upstart,
upstart-comapt-sysv and upstart-logd. The update-manager also seems to want to
do so, if I start them, but if I click ok, it finaly decides to not to do any
thing.
sudo apt-get upgrade means, that there is no need to upgrade nothing.
So it seams to be a bug in synaptic (and in the update-manager).
I can't find the bug tracking system of synaptic. Does anybody know?

[Bug 312658] [NEW] Cancelling Copy Disc ... leaves DVD unmounted

2008-12-31 Thread era
Public bug reported:

(I was about to report this against cdrkit but I guess not.)

Steps to repro:

1. Insert a DVD movie disk, observe its icon on the desktop
2. Right-click on the icon, select Copy Disc ...
3. Hit Cancel

Expected result:

DVD icon should remain on desktop

Actual result:

Poof, it's gone

It's apparently unmounted already after 2 in the repro steps.

As a workaround, you can obviously eject the disk and push it back in to
get it back, but it's an annoyance.

[Bug 244480] Re: support AES-XTS mode

2008-12-31 Thread jasonwc
Nevermind, I figured out how to create an LUKS+LVM encrypted Ubuntu
install using the
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystemLVMHowto
instructions.

The last step must be slightly modified, and a few more steps are
necessary to create the LVM.

Instead of cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt

Do cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 pvcrypt

Then:

pvcreate /dev/mapper/pvcrypt
vgcreate vg /dev/mapper/pvcrypt
lvcreate -n lvname -L size vg

ex.

lvcreate -n home -L 35G vg

This will create a logical volume named home with a size of 35 GB.

You need to create a new logical volume (lvname) for each partition and
set the size you want. I created three - root, home, and swap.

My setup looks like this:

lvdisplay -C
  home vg -wi-ao 35,00G
  root vg -wi-ao 20,00G
  swap vg -wi-ao 2,00G

Once you've done that, Ctrl-alt-F1 to return to the setup screen. Choose
Finish. You'll get an error stating that sda5_crypt couldn't be found. Select
yes to return to the setup screen. Now you'll see the LVM volumes you created.
Assign mount points to each volume and continue the install as normal.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-12-31 Thread Kokoa
Karl, I don't have ~/.fonts.conf and I removed 53-monospace-...conf and
all 10-* links. Still same problem. This also affect emacs-snapshot-gtk
(version 23) with Emacs.font: Monospace-10 set in .Xresources. The
Monospace-10 font in Emacs-snapshot and in Gnome-terminal looks like
those in the 'fonts.png' screenshot.

$ ls ~/.fonts.conf
ls: cannot access /home/fj/.fonts.conf: No such file or directory
$ echo ~/.font*
/home/fj/.fontconfig /home/fj/.fonts

Only difference I made to my fresh Ubuntu 8.10 system regarding fonts is
that I added some Korean fonts to ~/.fonts , and installed xfonts-
terminus and texlive-fonts-extra package, and removed 10-* links and 53
-monospace-lcd-filter.conf.

Maybe there are other files that need to be removed?

[Bug 234498] Re: Cannot uninstall irmp3 from system

2008-12-31 Thread VilleP
As they say, if its broken, betta fix it urself...

FROM :http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-333992.htmlon
doodled-uninstall: found this 1-liner gem:
I managed to fix it myself by changing invoke-rc.d doodled stop || exit $? to
/bin/true || exit $? in var/lib/dpkg/info/doodled.prerm and removing some of
the leftover files manualy.

Which I modified for irmp3 thus:

a) Create backup:
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/info/irmp3.prerm /var/lib/dpkg/info/irmp3.prerm.bk

b) as sudo: Edit the file: /var/lib/dpkg/info/irmp3.prerm

c) change the line: invoke-rc.d irmp3 stop || exit $?
to:/bin/true || exit $?

d) save uninstall irmp3

e) if it uninstalls, then remove the backup file:
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/irmp3.prerm.bk

Worked 4 me hope this helps someone else!

[Bug 299378] Re: network manager vpn dhcp error

2008-12-31 Thread Erki Hallingu
installed latest network-manager from ppa and still got same issue:

openvpn connects OK but after few seconds nm creates Auto tap0
connection under wired tab and starts querying ip via dhcp which kills
ip already assigned to tap0 by openvpn server.

I was able to overcome this by adding

iface tap0 inet dhcp

still creates one but it does not start dhcp query on it)

[Bug 312667] [NEW] Help for Evolution is broken

2008-12-31 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I click on the Help Contents menu option, I am presented with a
dialog box telling me:

Could not display help for this application.

There was an error launching the default action command associated with
this location.

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04)

Evolution version 2.22.3.1

I expected the help system to activate.

Instead, I got a cryptic and completely useless error message that
offered absolutely no clue how to fix this or what might have gone
wrong.

I see that a similar bug was reported and supposedly fixed back in 2005,
but apparently it has once more reared its offensive head.

[Bug 276445] Re: Madwifi (atheros) driver malfunction induces a system freeze

2008-12-31 Thread lamo
I'm also having this problem after installing Intrepid. I downgraded to
Hardy for a week and had no problems. Now I'm back on Intrepid and I'm
experiencing freezing 2 to 3 times daily when running torrents. I have a
Netgear pci wireless adapter using the 5xxx series Atheros 802.11
driver. Also installed backports with no luck. Getting the same errors
of wifi0: rx FIFO overrun; resetting. This is definitely a major bug
that from my googling looks to have been going on for almost a year now.
Don't understand why it wouldn't get fixed ASAP as its the only option
for internet for a lot of people. I'm gonna stop bittorrent before I go
to sleep and see if it's frozen by morning.

Sounds to me like bug 225973, however it is also possible that the 2nd

I haven't seen this in subsequent upgrades, but this bug hasn't yet been
analyzed, so it's hard to say whether anything has been fixed. The original
problem was confirmed by others, so it seems to have been a valid bug.

In order to diagnose the problem, we would need debug symbols from the
Dapper version of update-notifier, which may not be feasible to get at this
time.

[Bug 211026] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freeze when downloading from bittorent

I don't know if this is related, but I've been running Intrepid for a while

until recently, when my friend decided to update via the package manager.
Ever since then if I run transmission, after a random amount of time (but it
happens every time) my computer freezes up, and I have to go to shell and kill
transmission to make the computer unfreeze. However, sometimes it will freeze
up for a bit, and then the computer will run, but slower than my old 386...
any Ideas?
Thanks!

[Bug 312674] [NEW] Please upgrade to gnu tar 1.21

2008-12-31 Thread FredBezies
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tar

A few days ago, gnu tar was upgraded to version 1.21. It could be great
to have it for jaunty, because it adds support for both compressing and
decompressing lzma archives.

http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/#TOCreleases

* New short option -J, an alias for --lzma
* New option --lzop
* New option --no-auto-compress,

Cancels the effect of previous --auto-compress (-a) option
* New option --no-null

Cancels the effect of previous --null option.
* Compressed format recognition

If tar is unable to determine archive compression format, it falls back
to using archive suffix to determine it.
* VCS support

Using --exclude-vcs handles also files used internally by Bazaar,
Mercurial and Darcs.
* Transformation scope flags

Name transformation expressions understand additional flags that
control type of archive members affected by them. The flags are:

  r
Apply transformation to regular archive members.
  s
Apply transformation to symbolic link targets.
  h
Apply transformation to hard link targets.

The corresponding upper-case letters negate the meaning, so that H
means do not apply transformation to hard link targets.

The scope flags are listed in the third part of a s expression,
e.g.:

  $ tar --transform 's|^|/usr/local/|S'

The default is rsh, which means that transformations are applied
to both regular archive members and to the targets of symbolic and hard
links.

If several transform expressions are used, the default flags can
be changed using flags= statement placed before the expressions, e.g.:

  $ tar --transform 'flags=S;s|^|/usr/local/|'

* Bugfixes:
 1. The --null option disabled handling of tar options in list files.
This is fixed.
 2. Fixed record size autodetection. If detected record size differs
from the expected value (either default, or set on the command line), tar
prints a warning if verbosity level is set to 1 or greater, i.e. if either -t
or -v option is given.

[Bug 311436] Re: Backlight can't be set, although possible using xbacklight

2008-12-31 Thread Adam
KDE4 probably tries to detect acpi method of brightess control, kpowersave on
KDE3.5 do the same I think.
On Samsung NC10 there is no acpi method for brightness control, but Gnome uses
xrandr to communicate with hal to control display. Kpowersave says there is no
brightness control, and it's the same with powerdevil on KDE4. Adding xrandr
support to powerdevil would do the trick.

[Bug 312680] [NEW] sip-tester package upgrade to latest stable

2008-12-31 Thread Aleksander Morgado
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sip-tester

Current version of sip-tester included in Intrepid is: 2.0.1-1.2

sip-tester is originally named sipp by its authors:
http://packages.debian.org/testing/comm/sip-tester
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104305

The latest available version of sipp is 3.1, so would be nice to have
the ubuntu package upgraded to this latest stable version, as the 2.x
series lack a lot of functionality.

[Bug 311254] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in CopyKeyClass()

2008-12-31 Thread Matt Zimmerman
As expected, removing the patch does avoid the crash (since this call
stack cannot happen without the patch). As a side effect, my keymap on
the gdm login screen is wrong (which is what I assume the patch is for).

I just want to point out that there may be a distinct bug here, and that
fixing 309785 will not necessarily fix this one, even though both bugs
seem to be caused by the patch.

I can see, that you have the unofficial package uniconvertor installed

problem. You should remove the package uniconvertor and then (re)install

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-12-31 Thread zorblek
I, too have been experiencing this bug with Ubuntu Intrepid.
Jsteinhart's fix appears to partially fix the problem. Before installing
the fix, when I attempted to play a flash video after a suspend cycle it
would play for a few seconds then stop, with no sound. When I switched
over to a console and back, the video would then resume and sounds would
play as normal.

Now that I have installed the fix, flash videos don't stop after a few
seconds. They continue to play, but I still don't get any sound from
them (or anything else). When I switch back from a console, the video
will pause in the middle of playback while all of the audio that i
missed plays, then it will resume from where I left off.

In any event, I still don't get any other sounds (with or without the
fix) until I switch to and from a console.

If there's any more useful information I can give you, let me know.

[Bug 312684] Re: “Firefox is already runni ng…”

2008-12-31 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in firefox-3.0.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
