2009-02-16 Thread kaiszy
Hi chuck,

no, password safe is only an example (happens also with Open Office
Files, eclipse [my c source files], gimp [images]). Seems to be with
every application that uses the Fileserver (see also bug

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/321568

There my backgroundpicture is locked after reboot the client.

Best regards,

[Bug 324212] Re: Tomcat 6 does not respect CATALINA_BASE/lib

2009-02-16 Thread Thierry Carrez
I agree that having a /var/lib/tomcat6/lib directory that is just
ignored is very confusing.

However I would not change Tomcat behavior from upstream design and make
it consider two directories when looking for libraries. Not only would
that involve some heavy patch into bootstrap.jar, it would also
introduce a change in how Tomcat usually works.

I'd rather fix the confusion by removing /var/lib/tomcat6/lib and also
the lib subdirectory in instances created by tomcat6-instance-create.

[Bug 330138] [NEW] Ubuntu (8.10 with latest patches (patched on 16. Feb. 2009, 8.04.1 without patches) ignores filename cases on cifs-mount in an error-prone manner

2009-02-16 Thread Bugfinder
Public bug reported:

Mount your home share from an openSuSE 11.1 Samba server or an 3.0.33 Samba
server (gentoo) with
preserve case=yes
short preserve case=yes
case sensitive = auto
set on the server.

Try to enter into the Documents folder by typing
cd documents
(lower case by purpose)

Although it should fail (because it should be case sensitive), it will
succeed and an ls shows your documents.

The big problem is that when you try to edit your files via your
favorite editor (i.e. nano) or to show them via cat it will fail telling
you that the file doesn't exist (but you were able to successfully enter
the directory, you even could enter a subdirectory, but accessing the
files inside will fail (although ls shows them to you)).

As other distributions doesn't show this issue when mounting Samba
shares and it only happens with Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 8.04.1, but not
with Debian 4.0 (can't remember the r-code, might be 4 or 6, can't check
this now, sorry) and other distributions like openSuSE 11.1 mount them
without this behavior, it seems to be a Ubuntu-specific bug.

[Bug 330262] [NEW] sun-java6 should be updated to update 12 (6u12) in Intrepid (8.10)

2009-02-16 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Intrepid has currently sun-java6 version 6-10-0ubuntu2

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

$ java -version
java version 1.6.0_10
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode)

$ apt-cache policy sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-jre:
  Installed: 6-10-0ubuntu2

  Version table:
 *** 6-10-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://fi.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/multiverse Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

sun-java6 should be upgraded to at least Java 6 update 11, preferably to
Java 6 update 12. The version Java 6 update 10 has bugs that can freeze
the browser. For example, a major Finnish online banking site Sampo
Pankki (https://www.sampopankki.fi/en-fi/) uses a Java/JNI based
security solution which freezes Firefox with Java 6 update 10 (the
login screen will freeze the browser process).

[Bug 330259] [NEW] Problematic volume control keys and mute key an several notebooks + Patch

2009-02-16 Thread Marius Wenderoth
Public bug reported:

Since Intrepid, volume keys of Zepto Znote 6625WD don't work correctly as
already mentioned here (also in 32bit):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/278103

However, a fix for the 6615WD has been already released (look for Zepto):
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.27.8

I figured out that this fix would also fix the 6625WD's problem so the kernel
just needs apply the fix for this model.
I attached a diff to widen the DMI signature to target the 6625WD, too (tested
with mine, works fine).

There are users of the 6615WD model who still have this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/261721/comments/20
Seems like Zepto changed DMI entries in newer models of the 6615WD.
I obtained the dmidecode output of such a user and widened the DMI signature to
target those models also (tested by a user, works fine).

Users with a Fujitsu Amilo Xi 2428 are also affected by this bug but the mute
key is also broken.
I added a new method for fixing this notebook and added the DMI signature as
well (tested by a user, works fine).

There seem to be more Notebooks with this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/291612
For each model the DMI signature hast to be added and maybe a specific fixup
method has to be implemented.
However, both 6615WD models and the 6625WD need the same already implemented
fixup method so I just linked the DMI signatures to that method.
Probably this patch needs to be applied to the Jaunty kernel as well.

The testing results can be found here (german):
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/intrepid-multimediatasten-laustaerke/

This is my first kernel hack and my first bug report ever, so I wonder
if I should file a bug report to kernel.org myself or will you guys do
the job for me? :)

2009-02-16 Thread Ted Gould
Yes, of course it should detect. I built the patch to also include the
libindicate changes for the messaging indicator, though now I'm thinking
that they should perhaps be split into a separate plugin. While there
is overlap in the functionality it results is a larger patch, and some
autoconf changes as well.

[Bug 330266] [NEW] unable to compile kernel module on 2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp

2009-02-16 Thread blarg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-headers-2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp

On my ps3 running ubuntu, I installed linux-
headers-2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp which also installed linux-ports-
headers-2.6.25-2 and after the installation attempted to compile a
custom kernel module I use for my project and cannot get it to compile
at all.

With the package provided setup after typing 'make' I get:

make -C /lib/modules/2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp/build M=/home/nssal/mod modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp'
make[1]: Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `Makefile'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I then looked around and noticed that inside /usr/src/linux-ports-
headers-2.6.25-2 there was a Makefile and what appeared to be valid
header file, so I symlinked build to this directory, but Make complained
that the headers did not match the compiled kernel etc so it would
compile this way either. This same approach, installing linux-headers
-kernel-version has allowed me to run my kernel module on ubuntu x86
and x86_64 across many kernels, but I cannot get a kernel module to
compile at all on the ps3.

[Bug 330262] Re: sun-java6 should be updated to update 12 (6u12) in Intrepid (8.10)

2009-02-16 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
The URL that causes browser to freeze is
https://ebanking.sampopankki.fi/html/index.html?site=SBNBENsecsystem=E2
(DO NOT CLICK THE LINK IF YOU HAVE FIREFOX AND ANY WINDOW/TAB HAS ANYTHING
IMPORTANT!)

Attaching strace to the frozen firefox process shows following repeated:
read(66, 0xbf9880a0, 4) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
read(66, 0xbf9880a0, 4) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

unavailable)
read(66, 0xbf9880a0, 4) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

Firefox process eats all the CPU it can get (one core).

[Bug 330268] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Ruby 1.9.1

2009-02-16 Thread Dmitry DeltaKilo Korotkov
Public bug reported:

Ruby 1.9 is a new series of Ruby. It is modern, faster, with clearer syntax,
multilingualized, a much improved version of Ruby.
Ruby 1.8 series has been used since 2003 and many great products were born on
it.
Today, the Ruby 1.9 series starts its history as the 1.8 series did.
from slashdot.com:
The VM of Ruby 1.9, formerly known as YARV, was initiated by Koichi Sasada and
has been in the making for quite some time. Ruby's creator Yukihiro Matsumoto
has already presented many of the upcoming features in his keynote at RubyConf
2007. Most notably, Ruby 1.9 now supports native threads and an implementation
of fibers. A lot of work also went into encoding awareness of strings. The
1.9.1 version is said to be twice as fast as the stable 1.8.7. It will take
some time though until the majority of existing Ruby extensions get ported to
1.9.

From Wikipedia:
As of 30 January 2009, the latest stable version of the reference
implementation is 1.9.1.

Ruby 1.9.1 introduces a lot of changes compared to version 1.8.6, such as:
Block local variables (variables that are local to the block in which they are
declared)
An additional lambda syntax (fun = -(a,b) { puts a + b })
Per-string character encodings are supported

URL: http://www.ruby-lang.org
License: Ruby License; GNU General Public License
Notes: I mean, we should include this in jaunty... Many ruby developers ready
to switch to 1.9 branch right now, cause it became much more stable equal to
1.9.0 and faster up to 20 times than 1.8 branch.

[Bug 329904] Re: Constant errors with Brother MFC-8440 and cups

2009-02-16 Thread JanBrinkmann
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
4. The version of the related packages you've installed
Thanks!

[Bug 330272] [NEW] mythbackend silently fails with QSqlQuery::exec: empty query

2009-02-16 Thread Kyle Gordon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv-backend

Hi,

Randomly and without warning, mythbackend will silently fail without
actually exiting. From the moment of failure onwards, it is unable to
perform any database queries, but will continue to serve data to some
functions.

The log will switch from normal logging, to errors pertaining to
QSqlQuery::exec: failures, and Query failures. Such as -

I have been unable to ascertain the source of the problem, as it appears
to happen whilst the system is not in use (ie, whilst at work, or late
at night). I have aattached a more comprehensive log in case it may be
useful.

[Bug 330268] Re: [needs-packaging] Ruby 1.9.1

2009-02-16 Thread Dmitry DeltaKilo Korotkov
** Description changed:

Ruby 1.9 is a new series of Ruby. It is modern, faster, with clearer syntax,
multilingualized, a much improved version of Ruby.
Ruby 1.8 series has been used since 2003 and many great products were born on
it.
Today, the Ruby 1.9 series starts its history as the 1.8 series did.
  from slashdot.com:
The VM of Ruby 1.9, formerly known as YARV, was initiated by Koichi Sasada
and has been in the making for quite some time. Ruby's creator Yukihiro
Matsumoto has already presented many of the upcoming features in his keynote at
RubyConf 2007. Most notably, Ruby 1.9 now supports native threads and an
implementation of fibers. A lot of work also went into encoding awareness of
strings. The 1.9.1 version is said to be twice as fast as the stable 1.8.7. It
will take some time though until the majority of existing Ruby extensions get
ported to 1.9.

+ From Wikipedia:
+ As of 30 January 2009, the latest stable version of the reference
implementation is 1.9.1.
+
+ Ruby 1.9.1 introduces a lot of changes compared to version 1.8.6, such as:
+ Block local variables (variables that are local to the block in which they
are declared)
+ An additional lambda syntax (fun = -(a,b) { puts a + b })
+ Per-string character encodings are supported
+
  URL: http://www.ruby-lang.org
License: Ruby License; GNU General Public License
+ Notes: I mean, we should include this in jaunty... Many ruby developers ready
to switch to 1.9 branch right now, cause it became much more stable equal to
1.9.0 and faster up to 20 times than 1.8 branch.

[Bug 330264] Re: cacert.org certificate won't install

2009-02-16 Thread JanBrinkmann
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 203967] Re: [hardy] not prompted to install flash plugin

2009-02-16 Thread Jonathan Thomas
Ok, so it turns out that kdelibs has a built-in detection feature for
flash that we would be extending with our patch to prompt for flash
installation with our tools. This detection, however, tends to be broken
unless a website explicitly tries to embed a Shockwave Flash object.
Some sites like Youtube, however, check to see if flash installed first
via javascript before deciding to embed the flash object. Since Youtube
chooses not to try to embed the flash object KHTML never detects it,
which is the bug.

This probably should get an upstream bug report.

[Bug 329245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon could use the new notification service

2009-02-16 Thread David Barth
Thanks for the Jaunty patch James.

About the private capability, it is named private because it hasn't
yet been discussed on the FD.o list. It should be renamed to something
more appropriate once this actually becomes a standard. For the moment,
it is our proposal, and I thought it would have been worse to call it a
standard capability where it is not the case yet.

[Bug 324061] Re: the brightness applet and function key do not work on my thinkpad x61s

2009-02-16 Thread Alex Matveev
Hi David,

I found the problem with acpi_backlight=vendor (at least with the kernel
2.6.27-12-generic).
Start with AC adapter pluged in. Everything works. Now disconnect the AC. Try
adjust brightness - it hangs up and the screen slowly will go to very dark with
no ability to be adjusted.

Just try to boot on battery only - the brightness control doesn't work
at all.

It is for Lenovo X61S.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue

Status in “nautilus-cd-burner” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
if you put a data cd or data dvd in to drive and let 8.04 mount it.

you can can right click on it and select copy.

when it finishes reading the disc you can install a new blank media.

on the screen it says to press ok to continue with new blank media.

if you press the ok button too fast the window will vanish and straight behind
the button you were clinking on is a cancel button.
if you hit this you need to recopy the cd.

i dont know if it over  writes the original .iso file it creates on the
hdd or not

if ou grab the window that comes up an asked you to press ok when a
blank media is installed to a different part of screen so you can
continue to click on ok ,as soon as you hit the ok button it will move
the window back to its default location.

[Bug 317602] Re: Please upgrade libpst from upstream at www.five-ten-sg.com/libpst

2009-02-16 Thread hggdh
I am sorry, I think I was not clear: the current Debian libpst package
is incompatible with the Evolution needs. This is why I am proposing the
*other* fork: this fork has been continuously developed (as opposed to
the Debian's, where, pretty much, only maintenance patches are applied.

So. If Evolution 2.26 on Jaunty is to provide the Outlook PST importer,
we have to split from Debian on libpst.

Additionally, the upstream at 5-10 provides the source already
debianised, but in a rather incomplete and broken way, which required
me to make some changes to the source.

I will check the link you provided as soon as I land. Thank you.

[Bug 330277] [NEW] scheduling is bad with P4-hyperthreading

2009-02-16 Thread Cyril F.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-7-generic

CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Distro: Ubuntu 9.04 alpha4

Amarok plays without underruns with hyperthreading disabled in bios,
even when another process causes a very high CPU load (90%).

But with hyperthreading enabled (two CPUs in /proc/cpuinfo), in the same
situation causes underruns. The pulseaudio process then also has a 90%
CPU load.

Thus the scheduling seems to be worse with hyperthreading enabled, which
should not be the case.

Re: [Bug 216878] Re: [regression]Slow disk transfer rate on Hardy

2009-02-16 Thread stek79
Hi Zhang,
  you're welcome.

It is actually possible to get very high performance from SATA disks,
comparable to those of SAS or SCSI, by using a technique called
short-stroking.

If you understand the mechanics of the disks, you can actually build a
system with very low latency. You can get this by placing the most accessed
files on the outer zone of your disk, thus getting the max rotational speed
and reducing head movement.

This way you can greatly reduce the arm movement and get higher throughputs!
:)

2009/2/16 ZhangInSeattle yzhang...@gmail.com

 Hi Stek79,

 Thanks for your reply!

I understand the hdparm result is the best possible speed. But the
difference between 42.84MB/sec and 5MB/sec still shocked me.
It kinda implied that the file system (I'm using ext3) needs more
optimization to store big files in the way the hard disk can sequentially
read (with minimum arm movement). (I don't know much about ext3, maybe it
 did the optimization already).

My laptop (thinkpad t61) is purchased in October 2008. It has a SATA
disk. It should have a much better performance than 5MB/sec imho :-)

 Thanks!

Status in linux source package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
 Hi,
upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy I've seen a considerable HD transfer rate
 slowdown.

I have a machine with two IDE disks, both are udma5 capable. In Gutsy, they
were recognised as 'hd[ab]' and I with hdparm sequential thoughput was:

 /dev/hdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.01 seconds = 57.19 MB/sec

which is quite correct for that kind of drive.

In Hardy, they are recognized as 'sd[ab]', and the performance regarding
transfer rate is LESS THAN HALF:

 /dev/sdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 78 MB in 3.01 seconds = 25.92 MB/sec

That slowdown is visible also during file transfer operations, obviously.
One thing I've noticed is that in the dmesg, my drive is set at UDMA/33, and
also hdparm reports that udma2 is currently configured:

 sudo hdparm -i /dev/sdb

 /dev/sdb:

  * signifies the current active mode

I've seen a number of users complaining about that, a number of bugs with
status Incomplete or Release Fixed. I can say that with the latest Hardy
patches (as of now), the problem is still there. Will that be fixed before
the final release? If not, that can be a huge performance penalty!

Here are some infos. I'm willing to help to solve the problem, just ask if
 you need any info.
