[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2009-03-07 Thread Alexander Sack
Thierry, please extend your approach to not kill wpasupplicant on
shutdown either. i think thats the problem that is left with your ppa
packages here as the ones reporting that your ppa package doesnt help
are using wireless.

Once you have that please request a merge for the 0.7.1 branch and if
you want also for the 0.7 branch in intrepid and I will take care that
this gets into jaunty and after some baking to intrepid.

** Description changed:

- I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they
automount on startup. An example of this is here:
+ IMPORTANT: this bug has enough information; please don't post _anything_
+ unless a developer asks for specific feedback! By posting to this bug
+ you only make it harder for a developer to spot the gem comments. Please
+ use the me too feature of launchpad to signal that you are affected
+ and would like to see this fixed.
+
+ I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they
automount on startup. An example of this is here:
//ip address of nas box/share name /home/hamish/directory name cifs
credentials=/home/hamish/.smbcredentials,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000
  0 0

** note the use of cifs in the lines above **

(The username and password are in the .smbcredentials file)

On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the following in
dmesg:
[ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
  [ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also
annoying...)

Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an
error message:
  CIFS VFS: server not responding
CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes
And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy

Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that it
works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS shares
trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and dismounting
the shares *after* network-manager is stopped.

  Hamish

Steve, we would need an MIR for powerman, such that nut could compile

leave that for the MIR-team.

The package is ldap-auth-config and not openldap-auth-config. You should

  apt-cache search ldap-auth-config

If not then you may want to double check your apt sources in

It's not a MIR process question, we have traditionally moved packages
between components until the bitter end of a release (not that I
*like* that, but it was just necessary). It's rather a question of who
will maintain the package and whether we have the resources in the

ahead with the SRU.

[Bug 47768] Re: Mount Root Files System Failed

2009-03-07 Thread Nick Dwyer
I have found similar hang in Hardy when installed on dual-boot mode with XP on
Sony Vaio desktop.
Only occurs after first major update. If I re-install from CD it works fine.

I have since discovered same on Acer Aspire 1 with 8.10 after replacing
Linpus. Ubuntu is sole OS this time. Workaround was once again to
reinstall (this time from USB) and NOT update.

If Ubuntu ain't broke I ain't fixing it!

[Bug 339081] [NEW] Disable hinting with luxi fonts

2009-03-07 Thread David Allouche
Public bug reported:

The Luxi fonts look great when unhinted, but they are just ugly when
hinted. Maybe there is no hinting data in the font itself and freetype
has to do auto-hinting, I do not know.

Since Luxi does not take well to hinting, hinting should be disabled.

In any case, Firefox 3.1 beta 2 from upstream binary tarball appears to
ignore the GNOME hinting settings, the only way I found to get good
looking Luxi fonts in Firefox was to disable the hinting using
fontconfig.

Fontconfig file attached (drop in /etc/fonts/config.d).

It depends on python ( 2.6) so aptitude down like that :)

Please fix that bug ;)

[Bug 339091] [NEW] [i945] screen freezes a few minutes after resuming

2009-03-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

A few minutes after resuming from suspend or hibernate, the display suddenly
freezes. This is not triggered by anything obvious (such as starting a
particular program), just randomly after some key presses or mouse movements.

After display freezing, I can still ssh into the box. The entire user session
continues to run, I can start programs, etc.

I didn't see anything interesting in dmesg and Xorg.0.log, gdb stack trace is
totally useless, stracing the X server shows that it's usually waiting in an
ioctl(), and receives keyboard and mouse events. I'll attach detailled logs in
a minute.

The single change that I spotted was in the registers:

--- regs.afterhibernate.txt 2009-03-07 08:24:27.0 +0100
+++ regs.freeze.txt 2009-03-07 08:35:18.0 +0100
@@ -140 +140 @@
-(II): MI_MODE: 0x0200
+(II): MI_MODE: 0x

This consistently changes like this after such a freeze happens. Whenever I
look at MI_MODE in a working system, it is always 0x0200. No other
registers change after the freeze.

This started happening two or three weeks ago. I am on Ubuntu jaunty
(development release), which closely tracks X.org upstream releases. It never
happened until then.

It definitively did not happen with -intel 2.4.1/X.org 1.5.2/Linux 2.6.27. Now
I have -intel 2.6.1/X.org 1.6.0/Linux 2.6.28.7.

My hardware:
 Intel mobile 945GM
 Intel Core 2 Duo 1.2
 1 GB RAM
 Internal 1280x800 LVDS (switched off)
 External 1280x1024 TFT

I attached logs and more details in the upstream bug report at

[Bug 159241] Re: [Tracking Bug] PCI resource allocation warnings

2009-03-07 Thread speedyed
Hi everyone ,

Just had to make a comment,so many people having problems with ubuntu! Im
having trouble understanding that,really...My experience has been different,my
first linux was a redhat ver.2.6 or something,back when win98se was big,still
my fav windows but thats a diff story,...Now im using Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid
ibex, whatever that means, can you tell im new to linux? ive had no bugs
really, installation took a little over an hour turning itself on and off
several times,it needed me in the very begining and very end of
installation,everything else was fully automated in a gui,no hanging,no
errors,no problems, other than trouble burning dvds ona dvd-cd rw combo built-in
my older toshiba laptop,1.5 ghz,only 512mb ram,...iit burns cd-r and cd-rw both
+ and - discs but wont even recognize a dvd blank disc,go figure,...but im
truly amazed from my old redhat to this version of Ubuntu 8.10,...wow,im lovin
it
you dont have to be a computer programmer,or a rocket sientist, was so
simple, hell windows has way more issues,...in fact windows vista crashed on my
new desktop,ok its 2 years old,new for me,hehe
Now i want linux on that computer cuz my laptop is at least 3 times
faster on ubuntu,it freed up my resources,my only issue was hooking up a mobile
quadband usb modem at 7.2mbs,and the problem was on the install cd,finding the
drivers that work with linux, there was none, but mac drivers were listed,i tried
and when i rebooted it was working and connected before it finished booting! im
really sorry you guys having problems, cant help wondering, most of you are
running a newer computer than me,...could hardware drivers be too new for linux
also i went for the newest ubuntu i could find, could some of you be running
older versions,alot older,...then newer drivers may not work,...all i know is i
got a piece of crap and its acting like a full blown super computer,i can do it
all with 512 mb of ram,was barely enough for win xp,cant wait to do the desktop
next, thanks for puttin up with me,i wish you all the best of luck with your
issues,but im really quite surprised,...ed

[Bug 339095] [NEW] ubiquity partitioner crashes on auto-partitioning

2009-03-07 Thread Marcus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I am trying to install Jaunty (20090207) on my Sun U24 where the
following partition layout exists, before:

   80 244198584 sda
   81 104391 sda1 (lvm)
   82 244083577 sda2 (swap)

During partitioning dialog I have selected to use the entire HD and I first got
an error message like:

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda5
-- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any
changes you made to /dev/sda5 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount
it or use it in any way before rebooting.

followed by:

The attempt to mount a file system with type swap in SCSI2 (0,0,0),
partition #5 (sda) at none failed.

You may resume partitioning from the partitioning menu.

Best Regards
Marcus

Re: [Fwd: [Bug 267241] Re: [intrepid] Xorg fails to start with more than one display adapter]

2009-03-07 Thread Bryce Harrington

Thanks for this work Bryce, I think the two-card scenario is
increasingly common and additional robustness in the face of that will

I definitely agree. As an aside, getting X working on multiple video
cards back in Xinerama days was how I got into X.org in the first
place. So this is an area I've a lot of personal interest in seeing
work.

Is the choice of the card with the highest busid the best we can do?
Can X tell if a display is connected to the card, and if one card has a
display, select that? That would handle the case where someone has dual
cards with some sort of bridge, but only one display connected to one of
 the cards.

X by itself isn't able to detect monitor connections; this probing is
done by the video driver. The video driver is selected based on which
video card is identified as the primary, so it's sort of a chicken and
egg problem.

I can think of a few workarounds, such as when multiple cards are
present, to load up vesa on each and see what's connected, then make the
determination of which card to use, pick the appropriate driver and load
it, etc. This could make for a slow boot process though, so doesn't
feel elegant, and it could take a fair bit of plumbing work, and it'd
definitely need to be done in conjunction with upstream.

I looked through all of upstream's multi-card bugs (there's a couple
dozen or so). I didn't find one with a clear plan of action, but the
problem is definitely well known.

I've a feeling the landscape here is going to change considerably once
we are on kernel mode-setting, since a lot of the decision making about
what displays to bring up moves to the kernel. It is possible that the
driver upstreams want to wait until this architecture's in place before
putting work into multi-card setups.

Another common case is laptops that have a high power and a low power
video chipset, both connected to the same screen. I don't know how X
sees that today, or how it handles it.

Right, we have a bug on this one, and it also is known upstream:

[Bug 181176] Re: [trident] xserver goes into infinate loop

2009-03-07 Thread Diego
I tried another distro which ships packages which are compiled from
almost vanilla sources: Arch Linux 2009. To my surprise X.Org X Server
1.5.3 seems to work flawlessly even without the NoDDC option. So this
bug is probably due to a weird patch downstream.

The xorg.conf is generated by X -configure, with no modifications. xorg.conf
and Xorg.0.log can be found in upstream's bug report:

NOT to use it (as long as you are not knowing what you are dealing with

[Bug 339100] [NEW] jaunty upgrade fails when libboost-python-dev is installed

2009-03-07 Thread Alastair Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libboost-python-dev

While performing an upgrade from intrepid to jaunty (using do-release-
upgrade -d), an error occurs while setting up python 2.6.

as part of the rtupdate hooks, the file
/usr/share/python/runtime.d/libboost-python-dev.rtupdate
is processed if libboost-python-dev is installed. The version of this file
installed with intrepid does not have a stanza in it to support being passed
python2.6 as an argument, so the install fails. Removing libboost-python-dev
via dpkg --remove allows apt-get -f install to continue setting up packages.
Reinstalling the package shows there is now a stanza for python 2.6.

Sorry I don't have more specific output to paste, I lost the scrollback
on my terminal while trying to fix the problem.

[Bug 339101] Re: Plasma crashes on startup

The crash still happens when forcing the previous package version
kdebase-plasma_4%3a4.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1_i386.deb
to be installed.
So maybe package kdebase-plasma is not the cause.

[Bug 295427] Re: G++ 3.4 is not installable from the intrepid repo

2009-03-07 Thread Atanas Atanasov
I am just trying to compile a piece of old software (surf/surfex) and
ran into the same trouble. The repository has gcc-3.4 but not g++. It
would definitely be appropriate to have both old compilers available.
One more vote to restore g++-3.4 in repositories (at least non-
official).

[Bug 292042] Re: Logitech Bluetooth keyboards (Mediaboard Di Novo) not working on Intrepid

2009-03-07 Thread Ambricka
I made some investigations yesterday, not a mediaboard or a dinovo, but anyway
a logitech Dell-branded keyboard.
As I've read somewhere earlier, the hidd-workaround stopped working some time...
Sure enough, I couldn't get the hidd-thing to work, but I noticed in the
xorg-log that it tried to attach my keyboard as a touchpad. There's no
touchpad, and of course it failed.
However, the keyboard has a couple of mouse buttons, for next/previous web
page and so on.
Fine, I removed xserver-xorg-input-synaptic and tried hidd again, voila!
Working bluetooth keyboard.
However, the connection seems to die every now and then, timeout or something,
and doesn't automatically reconnect.

PS3 running jaunty.
Tried the very same keyboard on a jaunty/i386, and it instantly worked after
pairing via the wizard.

/var/log/syslog with 'buetoothd -d' attached, and a couple of connection
attempts with my keyboard.

[Bug 268434] Re: Screen Resolution is not being restored after relogin

2009-03-07 Thread pga
I've got similar problem on my laptop Compaq nx6110
with Intel 915 graphics controller.

I have connected two monitors:
LVDS: 1024x768
VGA: 1280x1024

I need to have switched on only external VGA monitor but after
computer restart I always have both on with resolution 1024x768.

When I open Screen and orientation settings VGA automatically
back to correct 1280x1024 resolution but I have to manually
switch off LVDS screen.

I use Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2.1

[Bug 202267] Re: Menu name Hardware Drivers misleading

2009-03-07 Thread marco.pallotta
I also think, as already suggested by other people (Matthew Paul Thomas for
first) the app should be reworked, but I think not partially but completely.
In fact I should expect an app that we can call it Hardware Devices (at this
time this app is not present in the default installations but you have to
install additional software as hardinfo, or similar) that shows me the hardware
devices of the PC and, for every device, among other info, it should lists the
module in use (a good think could be to shows an info about the fact that the
module is gpl compliant or it is a restricted driver). In the case in which a
device uses a restricted driver we could be able to switch to a free gpl driver
(as we can do now with Hardware Drivers).

[Bug 333745] Re: Cannot unhide Pidgin buddylist if not using Pidgin's tray icon in KDE

2009-03-07 Thread Lionel Dricot
I confirm this bug on Jaunty. Pidgin is not usable anymore if you don't
use a tray icon because close is now associated with hide in the
tray even if the tray icon option is not activated.

IMHO, it has nothing to do with the indicator applet.

[Bug 305015] Re: linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic causes audio skips under CPU load

2009-03-07 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I can confirm this on current Jaunty (patched today) with 2.6.28-8 and
nvidia driver 180. Seems to happen mostly when scrolling pages in
Firefox at about 25% CPU load on one core, under 10% load on the other.
I am playing audio from Banshee (newest version from the Jaunty repos).

[Bug 339014] Re: missing usplash screen in kubuntu jaunty

2009-03-07 Thread Per Hermansson
This also happens to me. But is a lite bit more serious since I use
encryption and I never see it prompting for a password. My only option
is too boot using recovery mode and enter the boot password that way.

Since the usplash update is about the boot image I can mention that my monitor
has a native resolution of 1400x900.
If that is any help. I use Kubuntu and amd64.

[Bug 305067] Re: Cannot connect to WPA2 Enterprise network (Intrepid)

2009-03-07 Thread Michele Nasti
and also, my wireless device is

Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN
[Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

don't know if it's so different, but I can't find wich driver is using
it on my computer. Should I fill another bug? the symptoms are quite
the same.

[Bug 317270] Re: [Studio XPS 16] touchpad doesn't return from resume

2009-03-07 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
Well, more on this bug. I had an error in my options file since I
copied the line above without proofreading it first. It should start
with the word options emphasis on plurality. I should have noticed this
when looking in the file earlier, but I didn't. Still however after
changing that option it doesn't seem to make any difference. My
touchpad still fails to resume, only now there is no reset warning on
start.
