[Bug 388483] Re: The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action, was called for PID 30992 (/usr/sbin/smbd)

2009-06-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
@Amin:
From your trace it appears that it's a crash during normal shutdown of the
Samba server (exit_server_common (how=SERVER_EXIT_NORMAL, reason=0x0)). Would
you have Samba server logs corresponding to the issue ? Reproducing the issue
with log level = 3 in your smb.conf might give more information in your logs.

@Harald:
Is it the same backtrace ? In particular calling yield_connection with name=0x0
?

[Bug 328874] Re: getent group crashes winbindd on domain controller

2009-06-23 Thread Adrien Cunin
Sorry to be repeating myself, but isn't the SRU Verification team
supposed to do all these tests?

Also, given that the patch comes from and is approved by upstream, given
that it's really tiny, given that it's been in -proposed for more than 3
months with no negative feedback (nor positive, right), would it be
possible to assume it's safe to move it to -updates?

[Bug 306293] Re: Mod_ssl randomly causes apache threads to use 100% of CPU

2009-06-23 Thread Steve Beattie
I've been unable to reproduce the hanging behavior with apache
configured in a variety of different proxy configurations and beating on
it for quite a while. I have verified that the version in hardy-
proposed, 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.9, also functions when configured to proxy, as
well as continuing to serve webpages under load. I also ran the security
team's regression test for apache and found no regressions there.

[Bug 45842] Re: nfs shares not mounted at startup

2009-06-23 Thread Ashwin
I am running hardy-server x64 and this really sux.
Someone please explain why this is so:

sudo mount -a -t noproc,nfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs #
this does not work

sudo mount -a -t nfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs,noproc #
This WORKS!!!

What kinda hacky thing is this?

Can you patch /etc/init.d/mountall to have this new order?

Thanks!

[Bug 380715] Re: samba shares of symlinks are always read-only

2009-06-23 Thread scott
Thanks for the suggestion, chuck.

It seems that the parameter you suggested does not change anything. The
problem still exists.

N.B. this same share configuration worked before with the Ubuntu 8.10
release, but stopped working when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. So, I think
it's a problem with the implementation and not the configuration -- but,
I'm willing to try other stuff.

Re: [Bug 388483] Re: The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action, was called for PID 30992 (/usr/sbin/smbd)

2009-06-23 Thread Amin Akbarali
Hi Thierry,

Thanks for looking into this issue. I've encountered this several times
since our last e-mail exchange, but I managed to find some logs in
/var/log/samba, am attaching the file here.

The last incident was on June 20 16:06:21 I've also attached the text of the
panic e-mail from that incident.

I noticed some permissions errors in the log file, so I attempted a fix by
putting the user nobody in the same group as sambashare and now it seems I'm
not getting the panic e-mails again. So I wonder if that was the issue?

Basically the Ubuntu computer is a unprotected File and Printer Server in a
private network in my home office behind a NAT Firewall therefore I'm not
too concerned about security.

Thanks again,
Amin

Would you have Samba server logs corresponding to the issue ? Reproducing
the issue with log level = 3 in your smb.conf might give more information
 in your logs.

 @Harald:
Is it the same backtrace ? In particular calling yield_connection with

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-23 Thread Renegade22
Thats the most annoying feature of the windows explorer and I will hate to see
this enabled in nautilus. However if this must be added because windows
explorer likes it this way, do it. Just give me a gconf option to disable this
feature an i will be happy.
So any windows switcher will have their explorer and poweruser would be able to
disable this using gconf.

[Bug 387297] Re: manage-credentials should not ask for Launchpad password directly

2009-06-23 Thread Leonard Richardson
I talked with Martin and he proposed some changes to the workflow I put
up yesterday.

A. Drop the if you don't trust this client message. It scares people
for no reason, because untrusted clients won't display that message.

B. What if the user doesn't have a Launchpad account? We'll tell them to
hit enter when asked for their account, then open their browser to the
Launchpad account creation page. We'll exit with a failure code. The
launchpadlib application will cancel the operation and tell them to try
again once they have a Launchpad account.

C. Instead of presenting No Access as an option called Q, separate
it out. Tell the user that if they don't like any of these options, to
type Q to quit. Typing Q has the same effect as before.

It would be nice to solve this along with bug 389873 (Inconsistent:

consistent along all apps.

There is a patch for this on gedit-list:

[Bug 390319] Re: Ubuntu does not automatically check for updates, even when set to

2009-06-23 Thread Aaron Kelley
Found the problem (I think).

The /etc/cron.daily/apt script, which I believe handles the automatic
update setting, was not marked executable on either machine.

This reveals two problems:

 - /etc/cron.daily/apt lost its executable status during the do-release-upgrade
process (I'm quite sure I didn't change the permissions on that file myself)
 - The GUI for configuring the automatic update interval should check this and
warn you if this script is not executable! (Or just fix it itself.)

It would be pretty easy for packagers to add one if they wanted to. We don't
want to do it by default, though. I'd expect each terminal already has a menu

probably wouldn't stop at ther terminal, either, so you'd end up with a host of

[Bug 391318] [NEW] enable atime on input devices

2009-06-23 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

The simplest method to detect USB keyboard and mouse activity used to be
to check atime on the input device files. Current applications are
checking /proc/interrupts as a workaround, but this doesn't work if
/proc/interrupts doesn't mention keyboard or mouse or if those
interrupts are shared with other devices. I modified sleepd upstream to
call select() on all of the event files in /dev/input. However, that
requires root and threading.

The big application that we want to run that needs this to work properly
is Condor. Without atime on input devices, it falls back on
/proc/interrupts which doesn't really work. So, we'll need to patch the
kernel ourselves. The consequence of not patching the kernel is that
compute jobs will start while a session is active.

The Condor developers wrote an 18 line patch that updates atime on 6
input drivers. We would appreciate if you would consider including this
patch in the standard Ubuntu kernel patch set. The overhead is not
noticeable since it is only for a few files that are only in memory.

http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/input_patch-2.6.10

Another option would be for X sessions to update the idle time in utmp
at least once per minute. Condor and sleepd check utmp.

2009-06-23 Thread Kasper Peeters
I need a 2nd advocate, any takers? Thanks!

** Description changed:

Cadabra is a computer algebra system designed specifically for the
solution of problems encountered in field theory. It has extensive
functionality for tensor polynomial simplification including
multi-term symmetries, fermions and anti-commuting variables, Clifford

[Bug 391322] [NEW] Dell C640 fails normal boot with 2.6.30

2009-06-23 Thread Olof Kindgren
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Karmic I can no longer use normal boot. After
selecting the default kernel in grub2, the screen goes black and scroll
lock and caps lock starts blinking. To recover I have to press the power
button a few seconds.

If I however select recovery mode and select resume normal boot after
the kernel has finished loading, everything works fine.

In Grub I also have a manually compiled 2.6.28 kernel (basically the
stock kernel without some unneeded modules). If I use that kernel I can
boot normally, so I suspect this is a 2.6.30 problem.

[Bug 391324] [NEW] gdcm 2.0.10-4 fails to build in karmic.

2009-06-23 Thread Andrea Gasparini

gdcm 2.0.10-4 fails to build in karmic for gcc4.4 transition.
It can be seen in:

Part of the interested log is the following:

[Bug 263338] Re: Better file copy mechanisms are needed between filesystems (offer rename)

2009-06-23 Thread David Bensimon
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

Bug - Condensed: Better file copy mechanisms are needed between
filesystems. Offer a rename on name errors.

Bug - Detailed: Currently, in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, Nautilus 2.22.3 does
not offer to rename files when errors occur copying files between
filesystems. It does notify the user that the file will not be copied
but unlike Kubuntu's user interface, it does not suggest to simply
rename the file and continue copying. In any case, if the user steps
away from the computer, copying should not pause, cease or hang on
error (except for the files with errors in them). Errors should be
presented to the user as ON HOLD to ask what to do with the files,
while the rest of the files are copied over.

Copying runs into issues when files which have legal characters in ext3
that do not in fat32/fat16 must be renamed by the user. As well files
with capitalization do not hold a different name as files with lower
  case names (i.e. mark.jpg vs MARK.JPG and Mark.jpg). In ext3 these can
- live together in a common directory, whereas on fat (which is not
- capital sensitive) if you were to copy these three files, only one of
- them would live. To rectify the missing files you would need to:
+ live together in a common directory, whereas on fat (which is not case
+ sensitive) if you were to copy these three files, only one of them would
+ live. To rectify the missing files you would need to:

  1) remember or note the location of the files
  2) change the names
  3) copy the files manually

Efforts to simplify copying for the end user have been made in the past
with the addition of the merge functionality. We will now need naming
  issues to be addressed.

By needs packaging I just meant that that is the standard title for
these bugs. They should still be filed against Ubuntu like this bug.
Check out https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=needs-
packaging to see some examples. File a separate one for each package not
already included in Ubuntu, link them here, and hopefully a packager can
package them! :)

[Bug 391331] [NEW] behaviour of apply button in amaroks config dialog is not consistent

2009-06-23 Thread Ron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

using amarok package 2:2.1.1mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu1

In amaroks config dialog, checking or unchecking one of the internet
services does not enable the dialog's apply button.

How to reproduce:
- go to Settings - Configure Amarok - Internet Services (these steps might
sound slightly different, as I'm having a german gui)
- click one of the checkboxes in the list

current behaviour: the apply button stays disabled
expected behaviour: the apply button gets enabled

Ok, sorry for the delay. I did as you asked, I took one screenshot
using medium compiz settings. and one using extra compiz settings.
Although the medium seemed to have visably less tearing when i moved
my windows around, the screenshots still are completely distorted.

http://i39.tinypic.com/ejdk5y.png (medium settings, slow movement)

http://i43.tinypic.com/35lrfpd.png (extra settings, slow movement)

I might later try to record video of monitor and check for tearing,
just to confirm this isn't some printscreen glitch.

That's very interesting. Your problem definitely appears in the
framebuffer, which indicates 2 things to me:

  - Your install isn't doing double buffering, as double buffering would never
have this issue visually appear in the framebuffer.
  - Your install isn't even attempting to vsync, as if it was, it would be
 doing double buffering.

This makes me suspect this may not be a dupe of #212587. For some
reason, your window manager or copy of X isn't doing proper double
 buffering.

With the proprietary NV drivers, can you enable compiz effects, and see
if this changes things at all?

[Bug 213574] Re: Autofs fails to start with maps from NIS

2009-06-23 Thread Paul Smith
I think many newer environments are switching from NIS to
ActiveDirectory (in Windows deployments) or LDAP, for both user account
info as well as things like automount.

I've never used a setup like that so I can't say whether it works better
or not with networkmanager.

Certainly it's ridiculous that this has been broken for years in Ubuntu.
I've never worked at a company that DIDN'T use this model for mapping
directories, and not just home directories but all sorts of standard
shared directories. It works so nicely with Red Hat: you just bring up
a system, tell it to use DHCP and what its hostname is, and voila! All
is perfect: you have your DNS servers configured, NIS service
configured, NTP service configured, hostname entered into DNS, etc. No
effort required.

On Ubuntu, many of these things don't work and require manual tweaking,
for no reason that I can see except that no one has felt it was a
priority to fix the problems.

Pity.

Re: [Bug 348030] Re: Echo till mouse moves

2009-06-23 Thread artsci2
The issue seems to be that if you are already playing a file and then let the
mouse cursor rest on a file name the player will play the current file and the
one the pointer is on.

The echo I reported was because I was just clicking the file and letting the
pointer stay on the file. So the same file was playing and also being run
because the pointer was on it.

[Bug 391217] Re: Root delay too short on Lenovo X200 w/ internal SATA HD

2009-06-23 Thread Roland Dreier
I just noticed a string of lines like:

sleep: invalid number '0.1'

in the console before the message about not finding the root device. So
I guess something changed the version of sleep in the initramfs from
klibc to busybox, since:

/usr/lib/klibc/bin/sleep 0.1

works fine, but

/usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox sleep 0.1
sleep: invalid number '0.1'

so I guess this is not a kernel bug, but rather an initramfs-tools bug.
