Re: [Bug 388483] Re: The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action, was called for PID 30992 (/usr/sbin/smbd)
Hi Thierry, Thanks for looking into this issue. I've encountered this several times since our last e-mail exchange, but I managed to find some logs in /var/log/samba, am attaching the file here. The last incident was on June 20 16:06:21 I've also attached the text of the panic e-mail from that incident. I noticed some permissions errors in the log file, so I attempted a fix by putting the user nobody in the same group as sambashare and now it seems I'm not getting the panic e-mails again. So I wonder if that was the issue? Basically the Ubuntu computer is a unprotected File and Printer Server in a private network in my home office behind a NAT Firewall therefore I'm not too concerned about security. I talked with Martin and he proposed some changes to the workflow I put up yesterday. A. Drop the if you don't trust this client message. It scares people for no reason, because untrusted clients won't display that message. B. What if the user doesn't have a Launchpad account? The launchpadlib application will cancel the operation and tell them to try again once they have a Launchpad account. C. Instead of presenting No Access as an option called Q, separate it out. Found the problem (I think). The /etc/cron.daily/apt script, which I believe handles the automatic update setting, was not marked executable on either machine. This reveals two problems: - /etc/cron.daily/apt lost its executable status during the do-release-upgrade process (I'm quite sure I didn't change the permissions on that file myself) - The GUI for configuring the automatic update interval should check this and warn you if this script is not executable! [Bug 391318] [NEW] enable atime on input devices
Public bug reported: The simplest method to detect USB keyboard and mouse activity used to be to check atime on the input device files. Current applications are checking /proc/interrupts as a workaround, but this doesn't work if /proc/interrupts doesn't mention keyboard or mouse or if those interrupts are shared with other devices. I modified sleepd upstream to call select() on all of the event files in /dev/input. However, that requires root and threading. The big application that we want to run that needs this to work properly is Condor. Without atime on input devices, it falls back on /proc/interrupts which doesn't really work. So, we'll need to patch the kernel ourselves. The consequence of not patching the kernel is that compute jobs will start while a session is active. The Condor developers wrote an 18 line patch that updates atime on 6 input drivers. We would appreciate if you would consider including this patch in the standard Ubuntu kernel patch set. The overhead is not noticeable since it is only for a few files that are only in memory. http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/input_patch-2.6.10 Another option would be for X sessions to update the idle time in utmp at least once per minute. [Bug 391322] [NEW] Dell C640 fails normal boot with 2.6.30

[Bug 263338] Re: Better file copy mechanisms are needed between filesystems (offer rename)
** Description changed: Binary package hint: nautilus Bug - Condensed: Better file copy mechanisms are needed between filesystems. Offer a rename on name errors. Bug - Detailed: Currently, in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, Nautilus 2.22.3 does not offer to rename files when errors occur copying files between filesystems. It does notify the user that the file will not be copied but unlike Kubuntu's user interface, it does not suggest to simply rename the file and continue copying. In any case, if the user steps away from the computer, copying should not pause, cease or hang on error (except for the files with errors in them). Errors should be presented to the user as ON HOLD to ask what to do with the files, while the rest of the files are copied over. Copying runs into issues when files which have legal characters in ext3 that do not in fat32/fat16 must be renamed by the user. As well files with capitalization do not hold a different name as files with lower case names (i.e. mark.jpg vs MARK.JPG and Mark.jpg). In ext3 these can - live together in a common directory, whereas on fat (which is not - capital sensitive) if you were to copy these three files, only one of - them would live. To rectify the missing files you would need to: + live together in a common directory, whereas on fat (which is not case + sensitive) if you were to copy these three files, only one of them would + live. To rectify the missing files you would need to: 1) remember or note the location of the files 2) change the names 3) copy the files manually Efforts to simplify copying for the end user have been made in the past with the addition of the merge functionality. We will now need naming issues to be addressed. -- Better file copy mechanisms are needed between filesystems (offer rename) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263338 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213574] Re: Autofs fails to start with maps from NIS
I think many newer environments are switching from NIS to ActiveDirectory (in Windows deployments) or LDAP, for both user account info as well as things like automount. I've never used a setup like that so I can't say whether it works better or not with networkmanager. Certainly it's ridiculous that this has been broken for years in Ubuntu. I've never worked at a company that DIDN'T use this model for mapping directories, and not just home directories but all sorts of standard shared directories. It works so nicely with Red Hat: you just bring up a system, tell it to use DHCP and what its hostname is, and voila! All is perfect: you have your DNS servers configured, NIS service configured, NTP service configured, hostname entered into DNS, etc. No effort required. On Ubuntu, many of these things don't work and require manual tweaking, for no reason that I can see except that no one has felt it was a priority to fix the problems. [Bug 391333] [NEW] Broken Hardy package: postfix-pgsql
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: postfix-pgsql On a Hardy server with typical deb sources list, I can't seem to install postfix-pgsql. I tried update/upgrade, but it still won't install. Here is my attempt: $ sudo apt-get install postfix-pgsql Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. Re: [Bug 348030] Re: Echo till mouse moves
The issue seems to be that if you are already playing a file and then let the mouse cursor rest on a file name the player will play the current file and the one the pointer is on. The echo I reported was because I was just clicking the file and letting the pointer stay on the file. So the same file was playing and also being run because the pointer was on it. --- On Wed, 6/17/09, Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com wrote: From: Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com Subject: [Bug 348030] Re: Echo till mouse moves To: arts...@yahoo.com Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 11:01 AM Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Bug 391217] Re: Root delay too short on Lenovo X200 w/ internal SATA HD
I just noticed a string of lines like: sleep: invalid number '0.1' in the console before the message about not finding the root device. So I guess something changed the version of sleep in the initramfs from klibc to busybox, since: /usr/lib/klibc/bin/sleep 0.1 works fine, but /usr/lib/initramfs-tools/bin/busybox sleep 0.1 sleep: invalid number '0.1' so I guess this is not a kernel bug, but rather an initramfs-tools bug. ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) = initramfs-tools (Ubuntu) -- Root delay too short on Lenovo X200 w/ internal SATA HD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391217 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
