[Bug 373999] Re: CIFS loops endlessly when remote host is down

2009-06-30 Thread Thierry Carrez
The trace doesn't appear CIFS-specific.

As Steve French (CIFS maintainer in Linux kernel) explains in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/211631/comments/84,
we are in a corner case that can generate some timeouts, as the system
tries the best trade-off in dataloss/timeout/recovery-from-small-
outages. The bug here is if the repetition is without end, and iiuc you
cannot reproduce this anymore. What would be a regression would be if it
ever worked better in a previous release.

I'll mark it as Invalid for now, please reopen it (set it back to New)
if you can reproduce the endless Write2 issue. I guess this would then
be re-filed under linux since it would most probably be an issue in
the CIFS layer in the kernel. Thanks !

2009-06-30 Thread Dan Stover
Added attachments as requested (apt.log, apt-term.log, main.log,
term.log, xorg_fix_intrepid.log). In /var/log/dist-upgrade/ there is
also a subdirectory (../20090424-2130). This subdirectory contains
older versions of apt.log (2009-02-15) and apt-term.log (2009-01-31).
Please advise if those logs are also desired.

Although I don't see it, I thought I had updated this issue to indicate
that I was able to resolve this by uninstalling a partially-completed
installation of openldap.

Re: [Bug 334470] Re: FFE: Network UPS Tools 2.4.1-2

2009-06-30 Thread Arnaud Quette
Hey Chuck,

I guess you can close it since:
- 2.4.1-2 has made its way into Jaunty (2.4.1-2ubuntu4 to be exact),
- jaunty is closed (as you've mentioned),
- this one was left open for a newer version, including the Powerman (PDU)
support, which in turn would need to have powerman in main...

For that last, another bug is needed against karmic, but I'm checking with
the Powerman maintainer to create a common core that could be included in
both NUT and Powerman. So, up to you the Server Team ;-)

cheers,
Arnaud

Re: [Bug 381269] [NEW] NUT fails to shutdown UPS

2009-06-30 Thread Arnaud Quette
Hey Martin and Chuck,

thanks for the (double) report, Martin and to both for pinging me (hard to
get back from a month of vacation!).

you've guessed right about Lenny, and the fact that this doesn't affect
prev. release due to the late appearance of libupsclient and the various
work around it.

now, this bug doesn't affect jaunty due to the move of the libdir to /lib in
debian/rules
ie http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/libupsclient1/filelist

intrepid is affected though:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/libupsclient1/filelist

the above fix is the change planned for Lenny, and also the one that should
be applied to any ubuntu release.

the solution Martin has proposed can only be considered as a temporary local
fix (ie on your boxes but not for an upload) for affected users, for the
reason I mentioned in the Debian bug linked.

cheers,
Arnaud

Yup, I've installed your version (for 8.04) and it does contain the
correct plugin now, thanks!

Btw, the changelog of your version only mentions the irqstats fix, will
the munin-node.postinst change be in the final version too?

Thanks again,
Christian.

Re: [Bug 214420] Re: nautilus-share can't share ntfs/fat32 folders

2009-06-30 Thread mmnz
On 30/06/09 13:18, Rocko wrote:
This is a usability bug. The behaviour has improved considerably in
 Jaunty, eg:

 1. Attach an ntfs external drive.

 2. Try to share a folder through nautilus.

 3. The share dialog says:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path
/media/disk1/test as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own.
Ask the administrator to add the line usershare owner only = false
to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.

 4. If you follow the instructions and then click on the 'share' button,
samba shares the folder (and there's no need to restart samba).

A more user-friendly option would be the alternative steps 3 and 4:

 3. Assuming that the current user has admin rights, the share dialog
presents a window that explains you need to enable sharing of non-owned
folders, and to prompt for the admin password to do so.

 4. Upon entry of the admin password, samba alters its smb.conf file and
 shares the folder.

Hi, yes that is the error i get, Rocko's suggested steps 3 and 4 are
inline with what i had in mind...

[Bug 393736] [NEW] Update Pidgin to upstream 2.5.8 (fixes numerous issues)

2009-06-30 Thread ddcc
Public bug reported:

Not only does the updated upstream fix the recent problems with Yahoo,
but also includes security fixes (see 2.5.6 changelog; libpurple)

From http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog:

Version 2.5.8 (06/27/2009)
* ICQ
o Fix misparsing a web message as an SMS message. (Yuriy Kaminskiy)
* MSN
o Increase NS command history size to prevent crashes on buddy lists
that have a lot of buddies on other networks like Yahoo!
* MySpace
o Accounts with empty buddy lists are now properly marked as
connected.
o Fix receiving messages from users of MySpace IM's web client.
* Yahoo
o Fixed phantom online buddies. They should now properly disappear
when signing out.
o Fixed the crashes some users were seeing with cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com
in 2.5.7.
o Fixed compiling on systems with glib 2.4.x or older.
o Fixed an issue with file transfers. This may not resolve all
issues, but it should resolve at least some of the most common ones.
o The pager server will automatically update to scsa.msg.yahoo.com if
the user empties the field or if it is scs.msg.yahoo.com. This should ease the
pain of transition to the new login method.
* XMPP
o Fix an incompatibility betweeen Prosody and libpurple clients.

Version 2.5.7 (06/20/2009)
* Yahoo Protocol 16 support, including new HTTPS login method; this should
fix a number of login problems that have recently cropped up. (Sulabh Mahajan,
Mike Maiku Ruprecht)
* Only display the AIM Unable to Retrieve Buddy List message once per
connection. (Rob Taft)
* Blocking MSN users not on your buddy list no longer disconnects you.
* When performing operations on MSN, assume users are on the MSN/Passport
network if we don't get network ID's for them.

Version 2.5.6 (05/19/2009)
* libpurple
o Improve sleep behavior by aggregation of longer timeouts on second
boundaries to allow better power saving. (Arunan Balasubramaniam)
o Fix various crashes on exit.
o Make XML parsing more resilient to interactions with other
libraries. This, along with the fix for libxml2 bug 564217, fixes the crashes
on connect in XMPP with recent gst-plugins-bad (see #8830 for details).
  o Many security related fixes
* IRC
o Correctly handle WHOIS for users who are joined to a large number
of channels.
o Notify the user if a /nick command fails, rather than trying
fallback nicks.
* MSN
o Fix a race condition causing occasional Pidgin crashes.
o Fix some errors about the friendly name changing too fast caused by
MSN/Yahoo integration buddies.
* XMPP
o Less likely to pop up a new conversation window in disregard of the
Hide new IM conversations preference.
* Yahoo
o Fix a crash when sending very long messages.
o Fix a bug where UTF-8 status messages get garbled when going idle.

Thanks !

[Bug 87122] Re: [needs-packaging] iFolder

2009-06-30 Thread scorp123
I was really slooow yesterday (not enough sleep??). There is a link
to SUSE's log4net package in the How-To (Step #1, third link from
above).Get that package, convert it via alien, voila: you get the
log4net_1.2.9-105_all.deb package file.

URL to the file:
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/suse/noarch/log4net-1.2.9-104.noarch.rpm

I tested the tutorial and it works pretty well. So if you really really
want iFolder on Ubuntu I'd recommend you give this tutorial a try and
go to the URL that aent posted above.

I thought I had this problem, but then I realised:

 System-Preferences-Power Management

The default when on AC Power is for a lid close to blank the screen.

Perhaps this default should be changed to suspend?

In any case, changing it to suspend worked for me - the laptop now
suspends when the lid is closed.

Perhaps this is a silly question, but have you verified that the chip

possible that the chip has failed in a way which still permits it to

actually acting as an interface.

[Bug 223212] Re: Non-free files distributed without license/copyright info

Wade, moving l-firmware to main or restricted does not make it any more

Can we move the dependency on linux-firmware from linux-image-generic to

restricted? Then everything would have a suitable component, without
breaking the ogre model.

[Bug 393754] [NEW] Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 missing dbgsym package

2009-06-30 Thread Han Pilmeyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

My wife has frequent crashes in Thunderbird. I've set up everything so
that I can capture stack traces when this happens. However last week
Ubuntu was upgraded through jaunty-updates from 2.0.0.21 to 2.0.0.22.
But one week later the corresponding thunderbird-dbgsym package in the
ddebs.ubuntu.com repository has remained at 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-
0ubuntu1.9.04.1.

This is making it impossible to capture meaningful backtraces. Can this

[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-06-30 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I ran a few more tests on another PC and got some very interesting
results.

The PC has an ASUS P5KPL-VM motherboard based on the Intel G31 chipset.

The results were the same for Kubuntu jaunty 64-bit and Kubuntu Jaunty
32-bit.

So it's not a problem of the hardware (unless it's the USB flash drive
itself) and it's not a problem of the 64-bit version.

I also used the pci=routeirq and the pci=noacpi options on boot with no
effect.

BUT... the problem does not appear in Hardy or Intrepid. It only appears
in jaunty.

All tests were conducted after clean installs and with no updates.

The following are average times as reported from dd:

Hardy
avl...@avlass-desktop:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/disk/test-file bs=32
^C32215401+0 records in
32215401+0 records out

Intrepid

^C112570144+0 records in
112570144+0 records out
3602244608 bytes (3.6 GB) copied, 315.495 s, 11.4 MB/s

63138817+0 records out
2020442144 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 311.369 s, 6.5 MB/s

I also attach the output of dstat for the Intrepid test

Ok, thanks for the testing, I see that this gets upstream and into
Jaunty and Karmic. For the other problem about not being able to
connect, yes please open another bug. This is another issue. If you do,
could you use ubuntu-bug linux (that gathers some default data into
the report) and it is also helpful if you can say you tested the same
against a mainline (or a Karmic) kernel and whether it works there or
not.

[Bug 393659] Re: nautilus crashes viewing circular symlinks

2009-06-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-30 Thread matthias
There are numerous ways to make it easier to edit the file name, which are less
intrusive than the slow-double-click way. The most straight forward would be:
- add a Button to open the file preferences dialog in the icon bar below the
menu. The file name is selected by default already. Since copying and pasting
are probably more common operations, one might argue to add buttons for that as
well.

[Bug 393766] [NEW] Mouse pointer render artifacts ATI Dual Display

2009-06-30 Thread ErMejo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

With an ATI dual display configuration (default jaunty drivers), the
mouse point shows rendering artifacts.

I tried it on two different systems, and the bug exists in both:

Linux desktop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200
Series]

Linux laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M64-S [Mobility Radeon
X2300]

The problem seems to be solved in the Alpha 2 of Karmic Koala with this
configuration:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.30-8-generic #9-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 3 15:23:55 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M64-S [Mobility Radeon
X2300]

This is a repost, as requested of bug 349367

[Bug 392113] Re: Can't enable firewall by means of Gufw via the System-Preferences

2009-06-30 Thread Bernard Decock
I'm using Ubuntu9.04 (fresh install) and Linux VM-Ubuntu-Bedc
2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

After powerup, Gufw is asking for a password (dialog pops up) and an
icon is set into the icon-tray. As long as one enters gufw by means of
System - Preferences - Firewall Configuration a new icon is added to
the icon-tray. I entered 4 times Gufw in this way and I got 4 different
Gufw-icons in the icon-tray. Note that the password-dialog was not
popping up each time I entered Gufw for the 2nd, 3th and 4th time (sudo
is active for 15 minutes, so this looks logical).

I entered sudo -k in the console. I was still able to enter Gufw without
a password-dialog! This looks as a severe security-problem to my
opinion.

Then I waited for 15 minutes (sudo timeout). After this timeout I clicked on
one of the icons in the icon-tray. I could
switch the firewall on of off although the sudo-timeout was expired

After the sudo-timeout, it is true that if one enters gufw by means of
System - Preferences - Firewall Configuration a password-dialog is
popping up.

I installed the new version gufw-9.04 (Version gufw 0.20.7-0 ubuntu2
was replaced by the new version)

The dialog looks completely different and I can't set some the system-
preferences, eg. icon or not. Also no icon is placed into the icon-tray.
I also can't specify any rules at all. So this new version is rather a
regression for me.

[Bug 393768] [NEW] [patch] Unable to make-kpg clean

2009-06-30 Thread Test-tools
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source

Hello,

this stupid bug is around since a while. The underlying reason it was
never seen by the developers or at Canonical Ltd is just, that the
build systems there are compiling from scratch, never using a make-kpkg
clean target.

Please apply attached patch.

  Roland Test-tools Bär

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

Patch is against git Linux Ubuntu-2.6.31-1.13.

[Bug 393770] [NEW] Why does swfdec-mozilla calls itself Shockwave Flash 9.0 r999

2009-06-30 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: swfdec-mozilla

On ubuntuusers.de we have quite often people who complain that Adobe
Flash isn't working properly. They say that they installed everything
correctly and that Extras - Add-Ons - Plugins say that Shockwave
Flash is installed. But the confusing thing is that this is not Adobe
Flash, it's swfdec-mozilla.

So my question is, why does swfdec-mozilla calls itself Shockwave Flash
9.0 r999 inside the settings of FirefoxCo. This is very confusing for
users and supporters since the name and the version number don't give a
hint that swfdec-mozilla is used instead of Adobe Flash? Can't we rename
that to swfdec-mozilla 0.8.2-1ubuntu1?
