[Bug 425914] Re: [FFe] CC and NC networking mode is set to 'SYSTEM' by default

2009-09-15 Thread Soren Hansen
In SYSTEM mode, Eucalypus connects instances to the existing LAN by way
of a bridge, and relies on existing networking infrastructure (DHCP
servers, DNS, etc.) to run them. This is a very basic mode of operation,
and is somewhat limited. In MANAGED(-NOVLAN) you get all the bells and
whistles Eucalyptus has to offer: EBS, Elastic IP's, the user-data and
meta-data service, etc. So much for the rationale.

In order to get into MANAGED(-NOVLAN) mode, Eucalyptus needs to have a
dedicated subnet for its instances. I've added debconf questions to get
networking information from the admin and changed a bit of logic along
the way to make Eucalyptus use these settings. In this mode, Eucalyptus
will run a few extra services, which will only be exposed to
Eucalyptus' internal subnet.

[Bug 429872] Re: /sbin/apparmor_parser: ... Profile doesn't conform to protocol

2009-09-15 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
This problem has already been reported for at least some of the packages
involved.

The real issue is changes in the Linux kernel security model which, in
turn, require a slightly different syntax for AppArmor rules. Those
rules are not 100% compatible with those needed for 2.6.28 kernels used
when upgrading from Jaunty.

2009-09-15 Thread Martin Pitt
This is a very common bug report, see e. g. bug 429863 or bug 429880.

Instead of trying to work arond this in a bazillion packages, is it
possible to catch that situation in AppArmor itself and disable itself
until the next boot into the karmic kernel?

Re: [Bug 74647] Re: php5-gd not using bundled GD library

2009-09-15 Thread Pierre
hi,

As of 5.3.0 it is possible to compile php with the external GD while
keep having the new features (most of them at least, like imagerotate
or imagefilter). That won't fix the non fixed bugs in debian's gd or
the bad patches (afair, it affects only debian, ubuntu being smarter
when it comes to sec fixes) but it will at least give the ubuntu users
all the features they are expecting.

Cheers,

[Bug 427288] Re: Karmic i386 EC2 kernel emulating unsupported memory accesses

I tested this on ami-a40fefcd (alpha5.1)

/lib/tls/i686/nosegneg/libdl.so.2.

However, after a reboot, I still see the message. I suspect this is
coming from initrd, or some early boot, and not used after that.

I've been able to eventually migrate to Jaunty slapd. As I was
expecting, it was not configuration related because slaptest -u would
told me that my config fil was fine. Here are the step I followed :

1) Stop slapd. Backup and remove /etc/ldap and /var/lib/ldap. With them,
upgrade is impossible for reasons I don't understand.

2) upgrade packages with apt

3) stop slapd.

4) restore /etc/ldap and /var/lib/ldap

5) remove /var/lib/ldap/log.1 (no need to backup it)

6) cd /var/lib/ldap then run db4.6_restore -h . -v

At this point, it will tell you that 4.7 is the environement version.

7) Run once again db4.6_restore -h . -v You have to run it at least
twice, else it doesn't work.

8) chown openldap:openldap log.1

9) Start ldap, your migration is now over.

The bugs are the following :

A) The install script of the slapd package seems completely crazy when
dealing with an existing installation. It backup everything in strange
ways and fails miserably if not everything is like expected. It should
be more defensive.

B) slapd should be able to restore by itself a database when the log
file is missing. It was the case with the slapd in intrepid, I've no
idea why it's not working anymore in jaunty

[Bug 425526] Re: Kubuntu Karmic i386 Alpha 5 network copy/stream from samba share glitch approximately every 5 minutes

2009-09-15 Thread Chuck Short
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 429106] [NEW] kernel and initramfs should be available for uec

2009-09-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Right now our uec images at http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/karmic (or
released ones at http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases) do not have a
kernel and initramfs available for download.

The instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Eucalyptus give
instruction on how to obtain one (from the filesystem), but we should
provide a ready-to-go kernel and initramdisk that would be
sufficient/optimized for Eucalyptus using kvm.

I'm opening this against vm-builder because I believe the proper place to put
changes are either
a.) vmbuilder
b.) the automated nightly builds scripts
(https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-on-ec2/vmbuilder/automated-ec2-builds)

I think that the output of vmbuilder should at least optionally include
a kernel and a ramdisk.

[Bug 430075] Re: eucalyptus-nc fail to upgrade to 1.6~bzr746-0ubuntu1

2009-09-15 Thread Etienne Goyer
The problem is indeed with eucalyptus. There is now a check in the init
script that will make it fail if the EUCALYPTUS value of the
configuration file is not_configured. The config that shipped in the
last version indeed was. Somehow, the config file did not got upgraded
to the new version, despite that I did accept the package maintainer's
version. Manually fixing the config file makes the eucalyptus-nc start,
and I can fix the package installation with apt-get install -f.

[Bug 430075] Re: eucalyptus-nc fail to upgrade to 1.6~bzr746-0ubuntu1

2009-09-15 Thread Etienne Goyer
Got the same problem upgrading a Eucalyptus frontend (running -cloud,
-cc, -walrus and -sc). However, we cannot accept the package
maintainer's version, as it will overwrite the NODES value in the
configuration file, which would make the frontend consider there is no
node controller. People running earlier version of Eucalyptus will have
to reject the package maintainer's version when upgrading. It is worth
nothing that the other eucalyptus- start just fine with
EUCALYPTUS=not_configured, unlike eucalyptus-nc.

[Bug 74647] Re: php5-gd not using bundled GD library

2009-09-15 Thread Ondřej Surý
And why not create two php packages? php5-standard compiled without
any special options and php5-extra (compiled with gd and perhaps other
stuff).

Bundled GD library in php has hardcoded dependency on php, which just
adds to reasons, why it couldn't be packaged as a standalone library.

What we really need is a proper fork of libgd with active upstream.

The situation is that we have official libgd which had last release in
2007, and bundled libgd in php, which doesn't have proper versioning,
proper soname, and basically it's useless for everybody except PHP
project.

So unless proper fork with (at least) backwards API (not ABI)
compatibility is made, it's almost useless to ask.

Re: [Bug 74647] Re: php5-gd not using bundled GD library

2009-09-15 Thread Pierre
hi,

You are still not getting it.

What you need is not a fork but a proper package. To ease this move I
added the possibility to use the system library AND to have the php
specific features like the imagefilter or imagerotate functions.

In the long run this compatibility layer will be pointless as
lilbgd.org's gd will have these features as well (gd 2.1) but that
won't make it into 5.3 or 5.2. However the compatibility layer can be
easily backported to your packages.

Feel free to come back to me if you need help on this task,

Cheers,

I think I have everything in place now, but in my testing the cloud

[Bug 430163] [NEW] Cloud/Walrus/SC init script confusing

2009-09-15 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

The eucalyptus-{cloud,walrus,sc} init scripts are very confusing. They
all operate on more or less the one daemon process, copying different
.jar files into place as appropriate. Starting each of the components
involves repeatedly restarting the Java front-end.

It would be a lot simpler and more robust, and certainly more efficient
at boot, to have a single init script that starts all the locally-
installed components at once.

[Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port

2009-09-15 Thread Shane Rice
This is still a very relevant problem. I'm working on Ubuntu Jaunty,
and cannot get NFS to connect through an iptables firewall because the
ports keep changing. The changing ports are: nlockmgr and mountd, I
don't know if status has to do with this or not, but this is a problem.
All the links I have found to bind nfslockmgr (or nfs in general) tell
you to edit files that don't exist on Ubuntu. A search for nfs-utils in
the repos, comes up vacant. Any advances made on this would be
appreciated. If I can supply any information, please let me know.

2009-09-15 Thread Shane Rice
@DaneM - Thanks for the info, I didn't realize the old info was still
good to go by.

It would be good to have something up on the Ubuntu docs page, that is
usually where I look for info. If someone could write up a short how
to, that would be great, at least the info would be out there and
available to everyone.

2009-09-15 Thread DaneM
ack...AleksanderAdamowski already posted on this. modprobe.conf
*should* work, but /etc/modprobe.d/options is probably a better choice.
Anyway, I agree that there should be something done about this as per
Shane Rice's suggestion. Perhaps edit the config files by default when
installing the nfs server package...?

[Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port

2009-09-15 Thread Shane Rice
My first attempt gave me this:
sudo modprobe lockd
WARNING: /etc/modprobe.conf line 1: ignoring bad line starting with
'lockd.nlm_udpport=4001'
WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong
into /etc/modprobe.d/.

So instead of using modprobe.conf, I used /etc/modprob.d/lockd.conf

It still complains about this:
sudo modprobe lockd
WARNING: /etc/modprobe.d/lockd.conf line 2: ignoring bad line starting with
'lockd.nlm_udpport=4001'

I made my first line: #lockd options.

Not sure if this is relevant, but reporting any way.

[Bug 430358] [NEW] bind9 + DLZ core dumps on AFXR request

2009-09-15 Thread Jon Austin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

Hi there

I'm having a few problems with DLZ and BIND crashing when a slave
server requests a zone transfer (my secondary DNS host does not
support DLZ).

I've built the BIND package on Ubuntu 8.10 x86. The steps I took to
build it was

apt-get install build-essential
apt-get install libmysqlclient15-dev
apt-get build-dep bind9
mkdir /usr/src/local/bind9
cd /usr/src/local/bind9
apt-get source bind9
cd bind9-9.5.0.dfsg.P2/
vim debian/rules
change --with-dlz-mysql=no to --with-dlz-mysql=yes
dpkg-buildpackage -b
dpkg - install debs

I believe it built ok with some warnings. The .debs installed ok, just
a minor issue with rndc and keys.

After a bit of mucking around with configs, any normal lookup works
fine, no errors produced when running named with -d1 console output.
However, when I trigger a AFXR request (using testing host configured
as static slave zone):

[Bug 425526] Re: Kubuntu Karmic i386 Alpha 5 network copy/stream from samba share glitch approximately every 5 minutes

2009-09-15 Thread Ian Mackenzie
1. To reproduce this problem:

Boot off a Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 5 CD or USB (Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 5 does not
have this bug)
Attempt to play a media file off a shared drive on the local network
(open Dolphin, type smb:\\10.1.1.2\docos (no quotes) into address bar,
navigate to directory using the mouse, click on media file to launch media
player play media)

2. Expected Behavior:

Media player (Kaffeine) launches,
Media plays until the end of the media
NB: Plugins may need to be installed to play media

3. Behavior actually encountered:

Media player (Kaffeine) launches,
NB: Plugins may need to be installed to play media
Media stops before end of media (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kaffeine/+bug/420960 for another
description of this problem)
- High bitrate media (eg 720p .mkv video) seems to stop faster than low bitrate
media
- If Samba is not the correct package to file this bug under, could you please
suggest a more appropriate one?

Thanks,

Ian Mackenzie

PS: The behavior has been duplicated on another motherboard/CPU/Memory
combination, so it is probably not specific to my hardware.

[Bug 429837] [NEW] need name of audio device in notification info

2009-09-15 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Karmic Alpha 6 LiveCD

While researching another bug, I was switching among multiple output
audio devices. I note the decision is to let each audio device have its
own volume level. Clever.

However, this means that the notification for each device is distinct,
so there should be a way to delineate between the two. Currently, there
is not. I think including a small bit of text to indicate the device
whose (volume level) information is currently displayed would be
helpful.

I surmise that this is a very simple change, just basically an extra
print call or string concatenation.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
