[Bug 400776] Re: ssh-keyscan(1) hangs if broken server does partial handshake

2009-10-15 Thread Daniel Richard G.
The system in question, along with several others, was recently
decommissioned and cannot be brought back online. (Honestly, we don't
even know which physical machine it was.)

This bug was trivially reproducible at the time that the report was
filed, but I no longer have the means of doing so.

thank you for your interest.
bug #44506 is no longer a problem.
i reloaded updated successfully, everything works fine now -
except that when i return after suspend i get a message serious kernel
problem ... might become unstable.
reported as bug #447653, #448834, and joined bug #450711.
also see my two system tests.
a simple restart seems to fix everything.

its wonderful all the hard work you people at canonical do!

[Bug 451607] Re: The CC sometimes advertises the wrong IP address via avahi

2009-10-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
The fix for bug 449143 introduces two problems.
The first one is 169.243.169.243 appears as the first address in the
/etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ipaddr.conf logic, so it is used as the cloud
address if its already up, causing despair and desolation (this bug)
The second one is that ifconfig eth0 will show up the link-local address
only, as Dustin says in comment 2. I'm not sure exactly how nasty this is and
what exact things is breaks, though. 169.254.0.0/16 is a link-local range, so
assinging it link-local seems to be the right way of doing it.

I 'll commit a fix for /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-ipaddr.conf so that it
discards 169.243.169.243 as a valid cloud IP.

For the second part, its a direct consequence of the fix in bug 449143.
So if its a real issue I'd suggest reopening that bug, revert that
change, and discuss a better way to fix the issue there.

[Bug 90388] Re: hostname supplied by dhcp server is not used

2009-10-15 Thread tynaud
Hello...

I was so happy finding this script but it didn't work for me... I tried to use
it on karmic today. First I did like on hardy, using a hostname file empty (it
was well working), but it seems it prevents the eth0 interface to be brought up
networkmanager and even if declared in /etc/network/interfaces.
So it seems that the script is launched later than gdm... But I have not the
/tmp/dhcp-sethostname.err file which should have been created...

So how to change this order and bring up eth0 before gdm ?

2009-10-15 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Kendal-

I think I fixed this in qemu-kvm yesterday.

Please dist-upgrade all your packages, and rerun your instance.

I'm pretty sure this is fixed. Please reopen if it's not.

Thanks,

[Bug 452323] [NEW] Unable to start EUC instance on i386 arch

2009-10-15 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Public bug reported:

I'm having an issue starting an instance. I see errors stating disk
not found and no domain with matching name found. I'm also seeing an
error saying no supported architecture for os type 'hvm':

Snippet from nc.log:
[Wed Oct 14 14:57:00 2009][001691][EUCAINFO ] currently running/booting:

[Wed Oct 14 14:57:01 2009][001691][EUCAINFO ] stopping the network (vlan=10)

I have complete log files if needed.

The host os is Karmic i386 and I'm trying to start an i386 instance. There
might be a bug trying to run EMIs registered as i386 under
karmic/libvirt.

As a test, I disabled apparmor, but the problem did not go away.

Hi,

2009/10/15 Chuck Short chuck.sh...@canonical.com:
Is this still a problem for whois since I dont know anything about how
 translations work.

Looking at the translations import queue of whois, there are no more
no.po files, apart from the one that has been there sicne April, and
the nb locale is fully translated. If there have been over imports of
the same package, that could mean that the problem has been fixed. I
think we can safely mark this as fixed, in case we can always reopen
it.

Ciao.

I've seen this as well. The current workaround is to restart libvirt and
then eucalyptus-nc. The theory is that the eucalyptus starts and
connects to libvirt when the latter is not ready yet.

Status in nis package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Binary package hint: nis

I have a need to include as server-side map in a local map so that I can
make some local overrides (in this case the home directory). This works
in CentOS 4.7, but not in Ubuntu, so I know it's possible to do with
NIS.

/etc/auto.home
userfolder -rw,soft,intr :/localhome/userfolder
+auto.company_home

This doesn't work. I only get userfolder showing up in my /home
folder and none of the 50+ entries that are in the auto.home map on the
NIS server. the userfolder entry overrides an entry in the server-
side map, instead pointing the user's home folder to a local folder
rather than an NIS share.

[Bug 445105] Re: uses unsafe /tmp files

2009-10-15 Thread Daniel Nurmi
Greetings,

We've analyzed the points in the source tree that are referenced, and
have found that none of them are actually exercised in a Karmic default
eucalyptus running system. More detail on each follows:

GLclient is a testing utility that doesn't get installed by the package (or a
'make install' for that matter)
./gatherlog/GLclient.c: env = axutil_env_create_all(/tmp/fooh,
AXIS2_LOG_LEVEL_TRACE);

install-sh is only used for building eucalyptus
./install-sh:tmpdir=${TMPDIR-/tmp}/ins$RANDOM-$$

the function in 'storage.c' that uses these files is only used by 'test.c' in
'storage/', which is a utility that is never installed
./storage/storage.c:#define F1 /tmp/improbable-cache-file-1
./storage/storage.c:#define F2 /tmp/improbable-cache-file-2
./storage/storage.c:#define F3 /tmp/improbable-cache-file-3
./storage/storage.c:#define F4 /tmp/improbable-cache-file-4
./storage/storage.c:#define F5 /tmp/improbable-cache-file-5
./storage/storage.c:#define RM_CMD rm -rf /tmp/improbable-cache-file-?

CCclient is a debugging utility that is not installed
./cluster/CCclient.c: env = axutil_env_create_all(/tmp/fofo,
AXIS2_LOG_LEVEL_TRACE);

These two are never used for Karmic by default (which uses the handlers_kvm.c),
unless a user installs Xen on their node controllers. The first can be
entirely removed (is just there for debugging). The second is actually, I
believe, as unpredictable or more so than a file created with mktemp().
Eucalyptus instanceIds are random unique ids of 8 hex characters (i-ABCDEFGH
where A-H are hex values).
./tools/detach.pl:system(cp $virshxmlfile /tmp/wtf);
./node/handlers_xen.c: snprintf(filename, 1024, /tmp/consoleOutput.%s,
instanceId);

The httpd*.conf that ends up actually being used has this value set to '/'
instead of '/tmp'. The init script(s) actually replace this with '/'.
./debian/patches/var_lib_eucalyptus.diff: HTTPD_HOME=/tmp/
./tools/httpd.conf:ServerRoot /tmp

This tool is never installed.
./tools/euca_watchdog.pl:our $chkpt_file = /tmp/euca_watchdog.checkpoint;

[Bug 452323] Re: Unable to start EUC instances - no supported architecture for os type 'hvm'

2009-10-15 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Restarting libvirt and eucalyptus-nc did not seem to work around the
issue. Just to make sure I restarted things properly here is what I did
on the Node Controller:

eqlu...@granada:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin restart
 * Restarting libvirt management daemon /usr/sbin/libvirtd   [ OK ]

eqlu...@granada:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/eucalyptus-nc restart
 * Restarting Eucalyptus Node Service[ OK ]

I also tried stopping libvirt, stopping eucalyptus-nc. Then started libvird,
waited some time, then started eucalyptus-nc.

[Bug 452185] Re: can't access SC volumes in a UEC instance

2009-10-15 Thread Kendall Price
Actually, since my interface to the private subnet is a bridge as
required according to the cc.log for MANAGED-NOVLAN which is the default
setup using the server CDs, I was told by nekro_ in the #eucalyptus
channel that

vblade/aoe won't export across a linux bridge :(

so I am thinking if you use MANAGED-NOVLAN perhaps SC has to run either
on a different machine, or on another interface to the private network
on the front-end.

[Bug 452396] [NEW] umount.cifs does not update /etc/mtab

2009-10-15 Thread Alex G
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS

smbfs:

 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4 0

What I expect to happen:

When unmounting a CIFS share, I expect /etc/mtab to be updated to
reflect the current status of the system (i.e. that that mountpoint is
no longer active).

What actually happens:

umount.cifs works in that the mount is detached, and no longer shows up
in /proc/mounts. However, the stale entry is left in /etc/mtab, which
makes the output of the 'mount' command misleading at best.

Re: [Bug 445105] Re: uses unsafe /tmp files

2009-10-15 Thread Kees Cook
On Thu, Oct 15, 2009 at 06:01:44PM -, Daniel Nurmi wrote:
We've analyzed the points in the source tree that are referenced, and
have found that none of them are actually exercised in a Karmic default
eucalyptus running system. More detail on each follows:

Excellent, the bulk of these can be ignored then. :)

These two are never used for Karmic by default (which uses the
handlers_kvm.c), unless a user installs Xen on their node controllers. The
first can be entirely removed (is just there for debugging). The second is
actually, I believe, as unpredictable or more so than a file created with
mktemp(). Eucalyptus instanceIds are random unique ids of 8 hex characters
(i-ABCDEFGH where A-H are hex values).
 ./tools/detach.pl:system(cp $virshxmlfile /tmp/wtf);

Yeah, this line should just be removed.

 ./node/handlers_xen.c: snprintf(filename, 1024,
/tmp/consoleOutput.%s, instanceId);

Would it make sense to use some other location instead of /tmp? While
it's not predictable, the file isn't handled safely on creation. At the
least, I would recommend adding O_EXCL to the flags. This may require
an unlink() call to blow away old files, but that's symlink-attack safe.
With the O_EXCL, worst case is a DoS on the console output.

Speaking of that code, I noticed this on the side that waits for the file
to appear:
while(count  1  stat(filename, statbuf)  0) {count++;}
fd = open(filename, O_RDONLY);

That loop is going to go by _very_ quickly. e.g. on my system, that takes
0.017 seconds to execute. I would recommend (not for security, but for
possible race bugs) that you use nanosleep() and time() for choosing an
actual timeout to wait with. :)

Thanks for checking!

[Bug 452461] [NEW] Cannot elide admin_servers from debconf config

2009-10-15 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: krb5-config

I want to set up /etc/krb5.conf via debconf so that the file specifies
kdc for my Kerberos realm, but not admin_server (nor kpasswd)
because I want those to be found via DNS.

If I do the logical thing, however---give a value for
krb5-config/kerberos_servers, but leave krb5-config/admin_server empty
---the config script does not create a clause under [realms] at all. It
should be creating a clause with a kdc line and nothing more.

(Background: This is an enterprise scenario. DNS points to a long list
of remote authoritative KDCs. Because these KDCs are remote, and also
buggy [long story] we would rather use a local read-only KDC for normal
authentication. But obviously, admin_server and kpasswd have to go to
the authoritative KDCs.)

Ok. So this is *not* the issue I saw. If the NC wasn't able to connect

Hmm. I wonder if this could be related to the bios. I'll check it to

Yes. Another option is to check dmesg output. If VT extensions are not
