[Bug 501956] [NEW] OpenSSH does not log failed attempts when key authentication is used

2009-12-31 Thread Nygel Lyndley
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
openssh-server:
  Installed: 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

If you disable password authentication in sshd_config
(PasswordAuthentication no) and attempt to log in with an incorrect key,
a failed login attempt entry should appear in auth.log, as it does with
username/password authentication. Nothing is logged though.

If you change LogLevel INFO to VERBOSE in /etc/ssh/sshd_config you
do get an entry as below but it isn't enough to indicate a potential
issue :

Dec 31 18:17:33 localhost sshd[8011]: Connection from 82.23.xx.yy port
38583

** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu)

[Bug 501843] [NEW] kernel cmdline requires i8042.reset i8042.nomux to fix erratic touchpad on Compaq Presario V5000

2009-12-31 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Under both the live CD and an HDD-based installation, the touchpad and
keyboard on my Compaq Presario V5000 will often randomly become erratic;
attempts to move the mouse pointer will incur random jumping of the
mouse pointer, or phantom right or left clicks. This effect will come
and go apparently randomly. Also, I'm seeing similar issues with the
keyboard; e.g. typing letters may work, but TAB/CTRL+character won't or
vice-versa.

I see messages from the kernel like:

Dec 31 00:53:00 taw kernel: [ 87.924490] psmouse.c: issuing reconnect request
Dec 31 00:53:08 taw kernel: [ 95.916392] psmouse.c: TouchPad at

isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
Dec 31 00:53:08 taw kernel: [ 95.935851] psmouse.c: issuing reconnect request

I found some potentially relevant threads:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=134123page=2
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=713676

... and ended up adding i8042.reset i8042.nomux to the kernel command-
line, which appears to have fixed it.

Note that various Fedora versions (I think in the 8..10 range; I can
look up the most recent version if required) did not require those
parameters, so this appears to be a kernel regression. I have a live CD
for at least Jaunty, so can check older Ubuntu versions too if required.

[Bug 430418] Re: clamav-milter socket permissions wrong

2009-12-31 Thread Stephen Warren
FYI, the clamav folks said this is just what the sendmail-supplied
libmilter(?) library does. Hence, they pointed me at sendmail support.
sendmail doesn't seem to have publicly accountable support, just a
black-hole email address. I did report the issue to them, but they
didn't respond.

[Bug 379895] Re: Trash applet sometimes shows wrong icon when is not empty in Jaunty

Well, bug #72468 was marked as fix released on 2009-02-27 but antonioni
opened this on 2009-05-24 (on the same distro which should not be
affected by the issue) . So we could suppose that bug #72468 was wrong
marked as fix released (however, personally, on Jaunty, I haven't ever
been able to reproduce this bug).

[Bug 449876] Re: raid degraded after update to Karmic beta

2009-12-31 Thread Eva Drud
To me it's still not really clear why the installer (as well as gparted,

the live system. I did not try writing, though. This confused me a lot.
Is there a reason for this behaviour?

[Bug 433856] Re: Display Properties sets virtual resolution too low

2009-12-31 Thread thinkpad
Like for vukasin0, dito for me.

IBM Thinkpad R50, with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500.

Plus: when logging back in I get the following error text across the
panel:

[quote]
java (error) console microsoft print 2 how to hide panel
[unquote]

What has this to do with a) Java and b) Microsoft ?

For the moment: does it make sense to fiddle around with xorg.conf
xrandr (in Karmic) ?

[Bug 479905] Re: VPN PPTP problem in Kubuntu Karmic Beta

2009-12-31 Thread Carles Codony
Adding a mee too. Can't see if the connection works or not, just trying
blindly to click again and again, that's not very user friendly.

Also, by default the packages needed for VPN connection are not there,
but nowhere in the network manager applet says so, the only cue is that
the 'add' button in the VPN tab is greyed out. A button allowing the
user to install the needed VPN packages would be more useful.

[Bug 433856] Re: Display Properties sets virtual resolution too low

2009-12-31 Thread thinkpad
Sorry for multiple posting (no way of editing ?):

New observation:

Now that I told Display Preferences that my external monitor is to the
right side of my laptop it has worked (though physically it still is to
its left). BUT - the display is still a bit whacky and fickle, that is
to say, the panels (both top and below Firefox, whatever their proper
name), are mostly stripy orange with the occasional icon / button
visible when I hover over it.

So basically this works, but obviously far from perfectly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

[Bug 501856] [NEW] plasma desktop crash with applet quick launch when you click on soft link to directory and another times crash

2009-12-31 Thread STaRMaN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-desktop

My system:

System:
   Kubuntu Karmic 64 bits.
   Linuxl 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M96 [Mobility Radeon HD
4650] (with ATI privative drivers)

This bug happend with and without desktop effects activated.

I saw 2 differents cases:

1) The content of the destination folder is not showed in quick launch applet
To reproduce this case:

In your home folder:

mkdir A
touch A/test.txt
ln -s A a

Now, use the applet to view the content of a folder.
The file doesn't appear.

2) In another cases, with more deep in the destination folder, plasma-desktop
crash.
I tried to reproduce this problem creating folders but i don't get it.

I have a folder Javi/Facultad/3_Sistemas/09-RC-Redes_de_Computadores
I have a link to that folder in my home
lrwxrwxrwx 1 jarizaro jarizaro 52 2009-10-26 00:45
09-RC-Redes_de_Computadores -
Javi/Facultad/3_Sistemas/09-RC-Redes_de_Computadores

Permissions of destination folder are:
jariz...@jarizaro-portatil:~$ ls -lh Javi/Facultad/3_Sistemas | grep 09
drwxr-xr-x 6 jarizaro jarizaro 4,0K 2009-12-29 21:20
09-RC-Redes_de_Computadores

If i try to go to that folder thought link using quicklaunch applet.
plasma-desktop crash.

Running in console plasma-desktop, the relative lines to this crash are:
plasma-desktop(6611)/kio (KDirListerCache) KDirListerCache::listDir: Listing
directory:
KUrl(file:///home/jarizaro/Javi/Facultad/3_Sistemas/09-RC-Redes_de_Computadores)

I tried to remove ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc and reset
computer, but with default applets configuration the system continues with the
same problem.

Re: [Bug 93849] Re: Feature request: Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec Support

2009-12-31 Thread Reinhard Tartler
komputes kompu...@gmail.com writes:

On the upstream ffmpeg bug, cehoyos has recommended to use ffmpeg SVN
with the options explained in the documentation. You can pull the source
 code by running:

 svn checkout svn://svn.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg

this will break all applications that have been built against ubuntu's
system ffmpeg that is currently at version 0.5. Please don't do that on
production systems.

Can anyone confirm that ffmpeg from SVN with the options below
 actually plays AMR properly?

It will probably do. and I could just add the build dependency and built
the system ffmpeg against opencore-amr.

However for license reasons, this would render the resulting ffmpeg
libraries to be licensed as GPLv3. Have you considered and listed how
many packages in the archive would have to be removed because of that?

[Bug 406460] Re: [i845] xorg hang on video driver 2.8.0

2009-12-31 Thread Brian Rogers
I set up a PPA for Karmic that will roll libdrm and xserver-xorg-video-intel
back to the Jaunty versions:
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-testing

I haven't tested this yet, so be prepared to undo it from the command
line if it breaks X.

If this old userspace stuff works fine in the new kernel, it may not be
the kernel's fault at all. In that case, I'll step my PPA forward one
version at a time and we can find out when the problem first appeared.

[Bug 498008] Re: Waltop Digital Tablet clicks do not work after upgrade 9.04 - 9.10

2009-12-31 Thread Solorvox

None give me a fully working tablet.

The closest I can get is working click/movement but pressure doesn't
work. This was using linuxwacom-0.8.4-4.tar.bz2 with patched wmcUSB.c.
And X also crashes if you unplug it. (Unrelated bug I think)

So it's still a problem, could someone maybe assign it to the correct
area?

Thanks gypsy_roadhog, I've marked the bug as confirmed. Maybe you could

[Bug 501737] Re: gpsd: client(0): channel assignment failed.

2009-12-31 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Do you have a gps receiver at all? If not, I'd suggest that you just remove
gpsd or ignore the errors. Without a connected gps receiver it is obvious that
you see errors
gpsd is started as a daemon at boot time normally, so that is normal that you
don't see a parent process. There are a lot of applications being able to use
gpsd, pretty much all applications which do something with maps or some kind of
geo/gis stuff. But again - without a gps receiver it doesn't make sense to have
it installed.

2009-12-31 Thread Roy Lee
Urgh, a new kernel can sometimes take very long to get into the official Ubuntu
repositories.
Although I wonder if the problem with AR928X adapters not being able to conduct
regular wireless activity and scanning for new networks concurrently is a
driver issue or the adapter's inherent fault. I'll switch into Vista in a
moment to download something and then do a refresh of the wireless network
listing to see if it exhibits the same behaviour.

[Bug 474907] Re: Startup fails somewhere around filesystem or HAL being started

2009-12-31 Thread Anand Kumria

After a few more cycles of debugging, it appears that mountall is SIGSEGVing
when the remount of / to rw occurs.

You can test this by changing grub to mount the root device 'rw' instead
of 'ro' and mountall no longer fails.

Note: I had significant difficulty reproducing the problem as ureadahead
also got in the way of things.

[Bug 441678] Re: [needs-packaging] OpenShot Video Editor

2009-12-31 Thread cenwen
For me, OpenShot could be the video editor by default in Lucid Lynx because he
is better than Pitivi and it's a living project.
We are the best.

[Bug 501869] [NEW] package oidentd 2.0.8-1.2 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/oidentd', which is also in package logcheck-database 0:1.3.4

2009-12-31 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oidentd

Basically both logcheck-database and oinetd contain the same file, I understand
that this is related to the file being moved from logcheck into oinetd. It
appears that one, or the other, does not contain the appropriate conflicts such
that apt thinks it is OK to install this package.

[Bug 501669] Re: Ubuntu.LucidLynx.x64::UpdateManager; After partially upgrade the main menu shows doubled items/shortcuts

2009-12-31 Thread A3lyphe
Addendum: after twice rebooting (after that 4s coldshut) the doubled menu items
are gone;
and the system runs with correct acpi and cpu idle (which was not given
before), just telling this in case there are some weird dependencies

** Description changed:

+ Binary package hint: update-manager

After using partially upgrade from update manager right after installing
Ubuntu Lucid Lynx x64 (AMD 64) via alternate install on compactflash
with lvm the menu items in main menu (System) doubled up.

Due to the fact that these double links seem to make path to old and new
versions in parallel i choose to mark it as security issue. The Computer
Janitor doesn't recognize these double links. But, if you start the
(read from top to bottom) doubled applications, you can get full freeze
of system in effect; i tried to start Synaptic Package Manager on the
  first link and it ends in full freeze of the whole system;

[Bug 460330] Re: cannot hear sound in LG P1 Express laptop

2009-12-31 Thread mdaniel
Hi,

One step is missing from my post. Sorry for that.
I also had to remove a package:

sudo apt-get remove sl-modem-daemon

Post reply if it did the trick!

Cheers,
mdaniel
