[Bug 427612] Re: does not pass pressed caps lock to client

2010-02-13 Thread Paolo Bonzini
The faulty patch indeed is only present until Karmic
(205_lock_keys.diff, not 005). I guess that then the best workaround is
to patch the karmic qemu-kvm as in comment #13.

[Bug 521235] Re: package libgssapi-krb5-2 1.7dfsg~beta3-1ubuntu0.1 failed to install/upgrade: the sub-processus dpkg-deb --control returned a state 2 output error

2010-02-13 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal )
:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 521397] [NEW] Unable to mount shares from Windows ME

2010-02-13 Thread David Lee Lambert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I'm having trouble mounting two directories shared from a Windows ME
computer on the local network. I can mount them fine from Debian Etch
and Windows XP; in the past I've mounted them fine from Ubuntu B, D, G
and H, from Slackware, from earlier versions of Debian and from Windows
Server 2003.

On a computer I recently upgraded to Jaunty, I have the following two
lines in /etc/fstab (after editing in response to a message about
dmask and fmask being deprecated):

//PurpleComputer/DQFILES  /purple/dqfiles   cifs
rw,auto,file_mode=0660,dir_mode=0770,gid=dq,noperm,credentials=/root/for-PurpleComputer.cred
   0 3
//PurpleComputer/PROGRAMFILES  /purple/programfiles cifs
rw,auto,file_mode=0444,dir_mode=0555,noperm,credentials=/root/for-PurpleComputer.cred
   0 2

The first share is shared from Windows ME as read-write with a share
password; the second is shared as read-only with no password. ping
PurpleComputer and smbclient -L //PurpleComputer both work fine.

# mount /purple/programfiles
mount error(2): No such file or directory
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
# mount /purple/dqfiles
mount error(2): No such file or directory
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
# mount | grep /purple
# apt-cache policy smbfs
smbfs:

500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.7 0
500 http://security.ubuntu.com intrepid-security/main Packages

On another computer I recently performed a fresh install of Intrepid.
Mounting the same share also fails, but with a different error-message:

$ sudo smbmount PurpleComputer\\DQFILES /purple/dqfiles/ -o
uid=davidl,file_mask=0660
mount error: could not find target server. TCP name PurpleComputer/DQFILES not
found
No ip address specified and hostname not found

I know this sounds like bug 235560, but I've checked /etc/nsswitch.conf
and /etc/samba/smb.conf, and they seem to be appropriate. I am able to
mount a SMB share shared by Debian Etch with Jaunty.

[Bug 521397] Re: Unable to mount shares from Windows ME

2010-02-13 Thread Andreas Noteng
Thanks for your help making Ubuntu better by reporting this bug.
First a stupid question: do the /purple/dqfiles and /purple/programfiles
directories exist in the Jaunty installation?
Second: Why would you install Jaunty? It's supported until October 2010, but
I'll strongly recommend Karmic, or even Lucid (still in Alpha). Could you
please test a recent jaunty live-cd and see if you can reproduce the bug?
Third: Windows ME is most likely the worst OS ever released...

[Bug 484807] Re: module blacklisting not respected

2010-02-13 Thread AmenophisIII
the annoyance of this problem is, that you have to find out why kvm_intel is
loaded, although you have set up a blacklist for it.
if i put something on a presumable system-wide blacklist, i dont expect it to
be loaded in another way.

it this patch is not included, than the manpage of modprobe.d should
mention, that there may be other mechanisms loading modules, it can not
control imho.

redhat had a similar bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=383921

ubuntuforums (most of them without a hint to this bug).

[Bug 518029] Re: glusterfs 2.0.x max's out CPU

2010-02-13 Thread Dave Hall
3.0.2 was released recently which seemed to fix some major issues some
people have been experiencing. The relnotes are available at
http://ftp.gluster.com/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.0/LATEST/GlusterFS_3.0.2_Release_Notes.pdf

More details on the issues closed in 3.0.2 can be found at
http://is.gd/8hUNy- (the full url is really long and ugly).

Based on a quick test here 3.0.2 works far better than 2.0.x ever did on
ubuntu 9.10 amd64 servers. We are running 3.0.0 in production with no
issues either.

Debian now has 3.0.2 in sid, so I think that is a good indicator of the
quality of the release.
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=glusterfs

I really don't want to have to maintain my own packages for 2-3 years
because ubuntu ships a broken version in a LTS release.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2010-02-13 Thread Mr.Kassner
This bug was reported four years ago and still hasn't been fixed? Seriously?
Just wow. Anyways...
I have this problem too and it's very annoying. No matter what computer I
install Ubuntu on (and I've installed it on a lot of computers) after rebooting
the icons are always rearranged. Intel video cards, Nvidia video cards, ATI
video cards, dual monitor, single monitor, LCD monitor, CRT monitor, laptop,
desktop, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10, 640x480 resolution, 1024x768 resolution,
1280x1024 resolution, it doesn't matter it always happens at least every other
reboot. It's very embarrassing to install Ubuntu on my friends computers when
they are interested in trying it and having their stuff randomly rearranged
every time they reboot. How am I supposed to recommend Ubuntu when it does
this? Please change the importance of this bug to something above Low because
it is much more then that.
Sorry if I seem a bit annoyed by this, I wasn't until I saw how old this bug is.

Re: [Bug 521047] Re: package linux-image-2.6.31-19-generic 2.6.31-19.56 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-02-13 Thread Steve Langasek

Understood, but I think it's ridiculous to require a user to have their
system in a specific state, with no reminders or warnings, especially
considering the check would be a single line of code.

The problem is not the code (though I disagree with your length estimate),
it's that this is a deep policy issue. The package manager has to continue
to work even if files belonging to packages are missing, because the user
might be using it to recover from filesystem corruption, or maybe a wayward
rm -rf. So the only way to recognize that a filesystem isn't mounted that
should be is for the package manager to parse /etc/fstab. But then, what
fstab entries should be treated as required by dpkg/apt? Should a
noauto entry be required? Is your /boot even /in/ your fstab? (For some
users it may not be, in which case this is completely impossible to detect!)

And this is a package management issue, not an issue with the grub package,
because long before update-grub is called and triggers this error, the
kernel package update has already been unpacked and dropped its files on the
wrong filesystem (the /boot directory of the root filesystem). So any
changes to update-grub to fail more gracefully would only give a false sense
of security.

Apt supports configuring hooks to run commands before and after installing
packages. I know users who use this to remount their read-only filesystems
read-write for package installation; I think a similar hook would address
your needs here better than anything that could be done by default in the
package manager, since yours is, after all, very much a non-standard
configuration.

[Bug 477891] Re: keepassx don't copy the password into buffer by pressing Ctrl+C

2010-02-13 Thread Victor Trac
I've always experienced the bug as the original author posted, but now
it is worse. I'm not sure what has changed on my system - perhaps some
X or Gnome updates.

KeePassX now refuses to copy into the system clipboard completely,
whether I right-click-copy, double-click on the password field, or
ctrl+c. It is using *some* clipboard, because when I copy text from
KeePassX, I can paste back into KeePassX (into another field or into the
search field), but pasting into something outside of KeePassX results in
nothing. I can also copy text originating from outside of KeePassX and
paste into KeePassX.

Ubuntu 9.10 and KeePass 0.4.1-1.

[Bug 477711] Re: nfs: server not responding, timed out, then nfs4 locks up

2010-02-13 Thread Arne Christensen
Well, if TCP is supported (and even is the default!) I think it should work. I
see switching to UDP as a workaround that I was lucky to find. There is no
sense in accepting that a provided feature (NFS4 over TCP) does not work
reliably. It would be better remove it, so other people don't fall into this
trap (now I'm a bit provocative, I know)!
The best would be to keep this bug report open until more data can be gathered
which might lead to a proper fix. A fortunate side effect of the present bug
report is that it serves as documentation of a workaround for others that just
need to get the thing to work. That's part of the reason I wrote a descriptive
title.
On a side note, I realize that there may be an underlying problem in the TCP
implementation, but NFS4 should not block completely even in that case.

go-home-applet is not installed and not seeded under armel currently. i
belive this is because it has a hard dependedncy on netbook-launcher
which would pull in a lot of unused packages.

[Bug 518306] Re: Some keyboard shortcuts stop working after reboot when using non-qwerty layout

2010-02-13 Thread surreal
Actually, that's not true, that is, custom shortcuts do not necessarily
work.

To clarify: Shortcuts involving keys that differ on Dvorak and Sholes
layout do not work when system keymap is set to Dvorak. So, for
instance, alt+f4 works, as does ctrl+shift+m ('m' and 'a' are in the
same position on both Dvorak and Sholes layout). The latter is probably
where my confusion about custom shortcuts working arose from.

[Bug 521311] [NEW] usb-creator file size issue

2010-02-13 Thread Simon Schliesky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

While having a 6.8G DVD in my drive I attached an empty FAT32 4GB USB-Stick.
After starting the usb creator it said something like partition size [of usb
stick] not sufficient which is correct.
Then I selected a karmic i386 .iso file which has about 700M. Now there comes
the problem, the usb creator didnt refresh the file size of the installation
source (.iso) which is expected to fit onto the usb drive. Instead it still had
this error message and a disabled Make Startup Disc button.

I worked around it, ejecting the DVD and restarting the usb-creator, so
it had no 6.8G image preselected.

I consider this a minor, but nice-to-be-rid-of, bug.

[Bug 521316] [NEW] Problem with large windows on small display

2010-02-13 Thread Iskan Der
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

I have Ubuntu 9.10 (with all available updates installed) on an ASUS eeePC
1005HA netbook. Its display is rather small (10, resolution is 1024x600),
smaller than many applications' windows are. When app window is too large to
fit the screen, the following problem occurs: when I click on any control
inside the window, the window itself jumps up/down (if height is too big) or
left/right (if width is too big). I cannot drag the window: clicking its header
just causes that jumping, maximize/minimize/close buttons do not work as well.
This bug is extremly annoying and makes many GUI applications unusable.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 9.10 on a computer with a small display (like eeePC 1005HA)
2. Install application with a large main window (verified, e.g., on Eric and
QtCreator)
3. Verify that part of the application window is outside the screen
4. Try dragging the window or clicking its controls to see it jumping

Re: [Bug 176343] Re: Switching From Windows guide needs to explain the guided partitioning option rather than manual partitioning

2010-02-13 Thread bob
it is a need for clearer english and straight to the point. The current
directions are confusing to new users.
EG - to share this drive with an existing OS, and split into 2, use this
option
to use an existing unused drive partition, use this option

Etc.
But NO, no-one has done it yet, and I have since loaded on 7.10 UBUNTU by
deleting the other partitions with ACRONIS Rescue Disk.It is much simpler to
use, and the options of ACRONIS are not onboard UBUNTU OS setup discs.

[Bug 521318] [NEW] broadcast accounts... does nothing unless gwibber is installed

I happened to install gwibber and then discovered that Broadcast

[Bug 518007] Re: Asus Eee Function Keys (Hotkeys) are not working with Lucid 10.04

2010-02-13 Thread Abhishek Dasgupta
Related to bug 505452 (eeepc_laptop module which provides the hotkeys no
longer loads). That bug also contains a workaround, which however is not
perfect (some people had problems with ethernet after that)

[Bug 383431] Re: Sound engine-related hang on Ubuntu (Studio) 9.04 with ALSA back end

2010-02-13 Thread David Henningsson
Could this be a duplicate of bug #485488 ? Could you test alsa-plugins
from my PPA and see if that fixes the problem?

@RJ Ryan: Where is your website, and do you have a link to the patch?
I'm interested to see if the portaudio fix is into audacity's version of
portaudio as well.

[Bug 383431] Re: Sound engine-related hang on Ubuntu (Studio) 9.04 with ALSA back end

2010-02-13 Thread David Henningsson
An additional note, #485488 only applies if you use pulseaudio. If you
bypass pulseaudio (as I guess many people looking for low latency do)
#485488 is irrelevant.
