[Bug 369575] Re: Why is /usr/share/pam-configs/krb5 specifying minimum_uid= ?

2010-05-14 Thread Steve Langasek
Daniel,

I've opened a separate bug, bug #579826, to track the problem with pam-
auth-update not saving changes to the pam_krb5 module options. Would
you mind testing the libpam-runtime 1.1.1-2ubuntu3 package in lucid-
proposed and reporting on that bug whether it solves the problem for you
(specifically, the problem of config changes being lost - I realize you
may not consider it a complete solution for your use case)?

stop mysql and start mysql just hang and dont seem to do anything. killing

so it keeps doing nothing.

[Bug 483410] Re: package drbd8-source failed to install/upgrade: linux headers missing

2010-05-14 Thread Neale Rudd
Hi,

I've had this same problem on a Lucid Lynx upgrade on all of our
servers.

It tried to upgrade 8.3.4 to 8.3.7

Version: 2.6.32-22-generic-pae
Upgraded from 2.6.31-19-generic-pae using do-release-upgrade
Server: PowerEdge 2650

After install, DRBD does not start:

* Starting DRBD resources
Can not load the drbd module.

modprobe drbd
FATAL: Module drbd not found.

To rebuild it and get it working, I performed these steps. It seems the
headers were missing, or the new version didn't build properly due to
dependancy errors (I'm afraid I didn't keep them, but it was listing 2.6.28-??
headers and saying it depended on them, even though those packages don't exist
on our server.
# Check module versions

# Try to clean up and re-install

apt-get autoremove
apt-get clean
apt-get install drbd8-utils

# However, same problem, so tried to rebuild as follows:

apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-22-generic-pae
dkms build -m drbd8 -v 8.3.7 -a 2.6.32-22-generic-pae
dkms install -m drbd8 -v 8.3.7 -a 2.6.32-22-generic-pae

# On version warning error:
dkms uninstall -m drbd8 -v 8.3.7 -a 2.6.32-22-generic
dkms uninstall -m drbd8 -v 8.3.7 -a 2.6.32-22-generic-pae
dkms install -m drbd8 -v 8.3.7 -a 2.6.32-22-generic-pae --force

# Check module versions

drbd8, 8.3.7, 2.6.31-20-generic-pae, i686: installed

# Start it up
/etc/init.d/drbd start

I'm worried it won't automatically upgrade now that I've messed with the
builds in this way though.

[Bug 580454] [NEW] qemu-ifup script stops libvirt 'ethernet' interface machines from starting.

2010-05-14 Thread Neil Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

qemu-kvm assumes that a bridge exists (/etc/qemu-ifup doesn't check if
the bridge exists before adding an interface to it.) and that the user
will always want the interface added to it.

This is not necessarily the case and causes properly defined machines
via libvirt to fail with a cryptic error.

[Bug 579274] [NEW] unknown job trying to restart postfix

2010-05-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: upstart

On a Lucid machine, the 'reload' command sometimes complains that a job
is unknown, even though there is an entry of that name in /etc/init.d
and 'service $x reload' works:

m...@lithe% sudo restart postfix
restart: Unknown job: postfix
m...@lithe% sudo service postfix status
 * postfix is running
m...@lithe% suod st
m...@lithe% sudo start postfix
start: Unknown job: postfix
m...@lithe% sudo service postfix restart
 * Stopping Postfix Mail Transport Agent postfix
  [ OK ]
 * Starting Postfix Mail Transport Agent postfix
  [ OK ]

I think I've also seen this with other jobs than postfix.

postfix does start at bootup on this machine.

postfix doesn't show up in 'initctl list'. Perhaps its init script is
somehow out of date with upstart?

[Bug 580590] [NEW] Squid no longer uses $SQUID_MAXFD

2010-05-14 Thread Ian Redfern
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: squid

After upgrading to lucid, squid ignores the setting of SQUID_MAXFD in
/etc/default/squid and always uses 1024 file descriptors, which is too
few for a busy proxy.

The old /etc/init.d/squid used to contain:

maxfds () {
[ -n $SQUID_MAXFD ] || return
[ -f /proc/sys/fs/file-max ] || return 0
global_file_max=`cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max`
minimal_file_max=$(($SQUID_MAXFD + 4096))
if [ $global_file_max -lt $minimal_file_max ]
then
echo $minimal_file_max /proc/sys/fs/file-max

I theorize we're all installing and uninstalling sysstat (with unclean

[Bug 571093] Re: libvirtd eats away more memory over time

2010-05-14 Thread Nick Brand
I spent some more time on this, and it appears my leak is related to
multipath. Shutting down multipath (multipath -F; service multipath-
tools stop) stops the leak. Alvin also appears to have multipath
running, it's listed in the dmesg he uploaded.

The udev messages I'm seeing in the libvirtd log are mirrored when
running udevadm monitor. I found that removing |change from the
ACTION line in /lib/udev/rules.d/95-multipath.rules appears to fix the
leak, or at least slows it down considerably. I ran my two servers
overnight, and this morning libvirtd on the changed server is using 53MB
of RES memory as reported by top, and the unchanged server is using
2.5GB. Both had similar workloads.

Here's the exact line:

/lib/udev/rules.d/95-multipath.rules
from:
ACTION==add|change, SUBSYSTEM==block, RUN+=/sbin/multipath -v0 /dev/%k
to:
ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==block, RUN+=/sbin/multipath -v0 /dev/%k

I found it was added in debian bug #489850, and it looks harmless enough
to change, at least in my instance.

Also, an overnight run with multipath turned off resulted in only 5MB of
RES memory usage by libvirtd.

[Bug 580708] [NEW] Can't run multiple saslauthd daemons as per the documentation

2010-05-14 Thread Patrick Goetz
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use postfix with cyrus. Since the debian postfix runs
chrooted by default and since the version of cyrus shipping with Lucid
has the location of the saslauthd socket hard-coded, it seems like the
best idea is to run separate saslauthd daemons for these processes.
(Making a symlink to the socket from the chroot jail to /var/run seems
like a kludge to me, particularly since /var/run is cleared out on every
reboot.)

According to the document:
 /usr/share/doc/sasl2-bin/README.Debian.gz

it should be possible to run multiple saslauthd daemons, but when I
follow these instructions *precisely*, I get the error message:

  saslauthd[4747] :detach_tty : Cannot start saslauthd
saslauthd[4747] :detach_tty : Another instance of saslauthd is currently
running

Let me preclude the question did I remember to set up a different
socket for each instance of saslauthd(\w*) in /etc/default: yes, I did
set up different sockets (/var/run/postfix/var/run/saslauthd and
/var/run/saslauthd) and tried this several times.

Is the included documentation incorrect or is this a bug in the
currently shipping saslauthd?

[Bug 580708] Re: Can't run multiple saslauthd daemons as per the documentation

2010-05-14 Thread Patrick Goetz
Please cancel this bug report -- I'm retarded. In the process of
testing all this stuff I created a /var/run/saslauthd symlink which I
had forgotten about. This is what was causing the second saslauthd
instance to fail.

[Bug 369575] Re: Why is /usr/share/pam-configs/krb5 specifying minimum_uid= ?

2010-05-14 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Happy to give it a try, Steve. I just commented in that bug report.

This is a potential solution, but putting aside the tricky case of what
happens if the common-* files have customized options, and then the PAM
profile changes?, another problem with this approach is the fragility
of the customization. If you deselect the module, update, then reselect
it, and update... the customized module options are gone without a
trace. There's no way to get them back, other than making the same edit
to the common-* files again. The only real way to safeguard such
customizations is to revert the files to manually-edited mode.

I'm not terribly comfortable with the way the statefulness works with
this approach, either. The PAM configuration is not just a vector of
bits indicating enabled/disabled profiles, but also whatever
customizations have been made in the common-* files. If I'm not aware of
what these customizations are, then I have no good way of knowing if my
PAM config is just that vector, or if there's something more to it.
There's no mechanism to tell me here are all the module options that
are different from what's in the profiles.

[Bug 566560] Re: samba server requires smbpasswd -a user constantly

2010-05-14 Thread rolfy
i'm not sure how this can be marked as low

anyway, to 'work around' my problem, i've basically built samba 3.5.2
off their site, and it's now working perfectly. Just in case anyone was
wondering...

It's a stuff around (i had to specify a lot of command flags and change
some bits and pieces) but at least i can now use samba again, and it
looks like this ticket is going nowhere, so i guess it's a good thing i
know how to build things!

[Bug 580718] [NEW] Plasmoid crashes when wired lan is selected twice, when the state is still Setting network address

2010-05-14 Thread Sandeep
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

If you choose wired ethernet connection in the right pane, the left side
shows the status of the network connection. If you have the network
connection on setting network address and you click on the wired
ethernet connection again - the plasmoid crashes and it takes the whole
Plasma workspace with it.

Mind you, the setting network address, usually happens very fast - I
was able to hit this bug reapeatedly, because I have a linksys router
that is slower than usual (but not too slow)

[Bug 580716] [NEW] [Lucid] Mouse cursor goes haywire when changing 'XScreens'

2010-05-14 Thread MickeyM79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Firstly a little background on my setup. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7200
Video card with dual outputs. I have two monitors attached to this
video card. (IBM SGI) physically arranged in that order.

define: Haywire = The mouse cursor starts flickering and moving on the
screen horizontally without the mouse actually moving. When this occurs
everything become unresponsive resulting in a hard reset of the system.

The problem I am having is, by default my primary monitor is the SGI on
the right. When I try to move the location of the IBM from the right to
the left of the SGI monitor using the Nvidia Xserver configuration
tool(ultimately xorg.conf) the mouse goes haywire as soon as I try to
move it off the SGI monitor on to the IBM Monitor. As long as I have
the monitors set in the xorg.conf file as (SGI IBM) everything works
fine; excepting that to get to my IBM monitor that is physically on the
left I have to move off the SGI to the right.

Summary:
Physical Monitor arrangement = IBM - SGI
Virtual Arrangement that works = SGI - IBM
Virtual Arrangement that fails = IBM - SGI

Thanks,

Mickey

@ tomlaunch,
Yep, turning off and then back on the printer did the job. After this with
printer on, I can turn off and on my PC and restart it and still be able to
print.

Wow, thanks for the tip. Now I have to figure out how to print to this
device on my server from a Fedora-12 laptop and a Windows XP laptop and
a Mac book :-(

[Bug 459991] Re: Unicode Phoencian block, 1090X, not displayed in correct direction

2010-05-14 Thread Chris Cheney
Phil,

Thanks for the information. I am uncertain but perhaps the graphite
library may be working towards supporting these types of languages?

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsicat_id=RenderingGraphite

If so then it is supported in OpenOffice.org but I doubt there is font
support for the language you are interested in yet.

[Bug 580719] [NEW] Pen crazy in tablet PC, Lucid

2010-05-14 Thread Saleel Velankar
Public bug reported:

Frequently pen stops working correctly and it goes crazy in my IBM thinkpad X41
Tablet.
When you put pen near to screen it starts selecting areas and a lot of strange
clicks are sent to desktop.

I have tried restarting x, but the only thing that seems to fix this is a fresh
reboot. This happens under the following condition:
Screen is locked/ turned off; screensaver is activated, powercord is removed
and the laptop changes to battery mode.

This bug is identical to the old:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xf86-input-wacom/+bug/234466.

Looking through the info provided in the old bug:

xserver-xorg-input-wacom version: 1:0.10.5-0ubuntu4
Ubuntu Lucid up to date.

Please tell me what other information I should attach.

[Bug 558998] Re: [lucid] compiz-gnome broken because of metacity update

2010-05-14 Thread Cedders
After reinstalling most of the system, I tried logging in in GNOME safe
mode, and metacity was running correctly. Big clue that it was
something to do with the GNOME session, and I remembered I'd stored
various startup applications.

So if starting metacity on the command line as above and then going to
System Preferences Startup Applications Options tab click on
Remember Currently-running Application and tick automatically
remember seemed to work.

So this isn't apparently related to the compiz-gnome package, but to the
upgrade process and its effect on the saved session. Might be the same
as bug 563171 and/or bug 560065 which don't mention compiz-gnome.

[Bug 574116] Re: Mythweather only updates once a day

2010-05-14 Thread MarcRandolph
Thank you for helping to improve Ubuntu by opening this ticket. I'm
marking this ticket as high because of the potential widespread chaos it
could cause across a wide range of possible applications. And that's
even ignoring that 10.04 is an LTS.

Using your short script, I verified that the correct date is provided by
9.10, which uses libdate-manip-perl (5.54-1) rather than 6.05-1. I see
some comments in the 6.07-2 notes that hint at fixing a similar problem.

[Bug 580724] [NEW] Merge sbuild 0.60.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-05-14 Thread Felix Geyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbuild

Please merge sbuild 0.60.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Changelog entries since the last merge:

sbuild (0.60.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
- Upgrade to Standards-Version 3.8.4.
- Use ${misc:Depends} as required by debhelper.
  * sbuild:
- Only run schroot --info once on startup, to speed up the startup
time when many chroots exist (Closes: #546624). Thanks to
Nelson Elhage for finding this issue and suggesting a suitable
  approach for fixing it.
- Don't append binNMU or extra version to version number for use
in the DSC filename (Closes: #546647). Thanks to Nelson Elhage
  for finding this issue.
- Distinguish between failed/attempted builds (Closes: #538083).
- Build directory cleaned under all failure conditions
  (Closes: #538085).
- Flush stdout explicitly in logger to avoid choppy output when
monitoring interactively. Autoflushing stdout appears to be
broken in Perl 5.10 so flush explicitly in addition to
enabling autoflush. Thanks to Ryan Niebur for spotting this.
- Print a list of all installed packages and versions, in addition
to toolchain packages (Closes: #553301). Thanks to Felipe
  Sateler for this suggestion.
- Don't default distribution to unstable (Closes: #559659).
Defaulting to unstable can result in unintentional uploads of
packages targetted at other distributions, such as experimental,
which can potentially cause serious breakage. As a result, it is
safer to require manually specifying the distribution, or
explicitly setting it in the configuration file.
- Set the man-db man-db/auto-update parameter to false to disable
unnecessary work in a build environment.
- Don't give back packages failing the arch check (Closes: #561936).
Thanks to Philipp Kern for reporting this.
- Add command-line and configuration options to enable running
apt-get clean, upgrade and dist-upgrade prior to building. These
complement the existing option to update the chroot, which is now
  also fixed (Closes: #521096).
- Add $build_source variable to sbuild.conf to complement the
--source command-line options (Closes: #564528). Thanks to
  David Bremner for this suggestion.
- Allow setting of $build_dir in sbuild.conf (Closes: #535911).
Thanks to Andres Mejia for this patch.
- Add $check_space option to allow free space checking to be
disabled (Closes: #551917). Thanks to Bruno Kleinert for this
  suggestion.
- --apt-update both updates and upgrades the chroot
(Closes: #521096). Thanks to Gustavo Noronha Silva for this
patch. Note the original bug report 'get_apt_command' error
was fixed on the 17th March 2009.
- Allow the use of -C as well as --check-depends-algorithm as
documented (Closes: #546673). Thanks to Nelson Elhage for this
  patch.
  * Add sbuild-clean script (Closes: #551310). Thanks to Andres Mejia
for this patch.
  * sbuild-createchroot: Compute an absolute path for the chroot
location. Thanks to Cyril Brulebois for this patch.
  * wanna-build:
- Depend on postgresql-8.4-debversion in place of
postgresql-8.3-debversion (Closes: #559607). Thanks to Martin Pitt
  for reporting this.
- wanna-build now reads its system configuration from the correct
  location (/etc/buildd/wanna-build.conf, not
  /etc/wanna-build/wanna-build.conf).
- Remove extra parenthesis from wanna-build-merge-packages
(Closes: #553364). Thanks to Felipe Sateler for this patch.
  * Remove absent -t option for --top from sbuild-stats.1
(Closes: #566320). Thanks to Kurt Roeckx.
  * buildd:
- Don't bind-mount /home into the schroot. (Closes: #566315)
- Extract architecture for .changes filename from the .changes file
instead of just using the system arch. (Closes: #566398)
- Fix NO_WARN_PATTERN default to not warn about sbuilds build/current-*
  symlinks. (Closes: #566722)
- Do all w-b interaction, leave nothing of it to sbuild. (Closes: #567646,
  #566321)

[Bug 580722] [NEW] setup grub for net install badly documented

2010-05-14 Thread spaceman
Public bug reported:

The procedure for GRUB is quite similar. Locate your menu.lst in the
/boot/grub/ directory (sometimes in the /boot/boot/grub/),

On my ubuntu system there is no menu.lst file - it uses
/etc/default/grub. So now I have to learn how to configure this strange
grub setup. Would be better if the instructions worked for ubuntu or
even better if there was a package I could download that downloaded the
required files and setup grub for me.

I'm now having serious doubts about following the rest of this guide.

[Bug 552165] Re: Boot speed increased from 30s to 50s when ureadahead enabled

2010-05-14 Thread Perran Trevan
Yes. That worked for me. Found this tip on Ubuntu forums and it looks so
much better (if not any faster, in fact GRUB2 to desktop is now
averaging 1 minute with the occasional long boot due to fscking).

I still would prefer a continuous progress bar. The 5 dots cycle through
several times before X starts so they're not an accurate indicator of
the boot progress like usplash was.

Lastly on logout/shutdown/reboot the blackness remains (with a tiny
strip of the Plymouth splash visible at the bottom of the screen. Maybe
this is a problem with kdm?

[Bug 580722] Re: setup grub for net install badly documented

2010-05-14 Thread spaceman
So it seems its because we now use grub2 - so please add grub2
instructions to this doc. Even if its just a link to here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

Essentially you do something like this
* Add the entry to the bottom of /etc/grub.d/40_custom
* Change (hd0,0) to be where your root is - so for me its sdc4 which becomes
(hd2, 4)
* Run sudo update-grub

I'm about to try this - hopefully will be able to boot again after. This
install is hard work.

[Bug 580724] Re: Merge sbuild 0.60.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-05-14 Thread Felix Geyer
sbuild (0.60.0-1ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: #580724), remaining changes:
- Do not install debfoster into the chroots because it is in universe
and not needed for package building itself.
  * buildd: Declare Replaces and Breaks on ubuntu-dev-tools (= 0.83) as
both packages contain /usr/bin/buildd. (LP: #558461)

[Bug 561538] Re: Logout after switch user cause black screen

2010-05-14 Thread chavez
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 555870 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/555870

Hi Erik,

I ssh'd to my Lucid system from a laptop running Jaunty and started
with:

cha...@samurai:~$ export DISPLAY=:0
cha...@samurai:~$ sudo xrandr
[sudo] password for chavez:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm

   512x38468.0
   400x30069.0
   320x24070.0
cha...@samurai:~$

At this point I then switched users and then logged out to get the blank
screen. However, for me the following command does not return

cha...@samurai:~$ sudo xrandr --output default --gamma 1:1:1

though I can CTRL-C and kill it but a sudo xrandr with no arguments
again as before I logged out also doesn't return unless I CTRL-C it.

The only log that shows any new entries is dmesg with the following:

[ 167.224029] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel
[ 167.226306] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 16, Head Count 410e

So, I wonder if my problem is either with the nVidia 173 accelerated
driver or my nVidia GeForce FX 5200 card?

[Bug 382285] Re: nvi reports errors on non-ASCII characters when searching

2010-05-14 Thread Dave Wolfe
This continues to be a problem in Ubuntu 10.4. Any file with
unrecognized characters cannot be searched, meaningfully edited, or
saved. This is unacceptable, it should at least fail gracefully and, for
example, just display the hex equivalent of the non-ASCII character.
Whoever screwed with nvi and broke it should at least have the decency
to back out their crap.

[Bug 227658] Re: Jockey fails to enable Virtual Box display driver

2010-05-14 Thread Haggai Eran
I usually just install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils to enable the handler.
It would be nice if jockey would automatically recognize and install it.
Perhaps modaliases for virtualbox guest module are also needed, in case
the module is not already installed?

[Bug 580730] [NEW] xserver no response 100%

2010-05-14 Thread ReimarBauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

if I many times restart firefox (more than 1000 times) at some time the screen
freezes. The keyboard does not response to numlock key pressed. This does not

2010-05-14 Thread Trifon Trifonov
Public bug reported:

[Bug 558461] Re: package buildd (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/buildd', which is also in package ubuntu-dev-tools 0:0.81.2

2010-05-14 Thread Felix Geyer
/usr/bin/buildd has been renamed in ubuntu-dev-tools 0.84:
  * Rename buildd to ubuntu-build to resolve filename conflict
(Closes: #558816).

To make upgrades work correctly buildd needs to declare Replaces and Breaks on
ubuntu-dev-tools (= 0.83).
I prepared the changes for the package in maverick in merge bug #580724.

Once the package has been uploaded to maverick it should be fixed in
lucid:

sbuild (0.59.0-1ubuntu2.1) lucid-proposed; urgency=low

  * buildd: Declare Replaces and Breaks on ubuntu-dev-tools (= 0.83) as
both packages contain /usr/bin/buildd. (LP: #558461)

[Bug 533369] Re: Fails to debootstrap squeeze chroot due to missing apt-get

2010-05-14 Thread Benjamin Drung
@Nigel: We need to fix the bug in the devel release (maverick) first.
Then we can fix it in a SRU (probably we want to the fix in lucid too).

To your debdiff:
1. The version should be 1.0.20ubuntu0.1 instead of 1.0.20ubuntu1.
2. LP should be capital letters (lp - LP)

Please reassign ubuntu-sponsors once these points are addressed.

[Bug 580733] [NEW] f-spot can't resize photos in edit mode

2010-05-14 Thread Evan Jeffrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

F-spot should be able to resize photos as an 'edit' operation, not
merely when exporting to a gallery or web application. There is a
plugin to enable this, but it is not installed or enabled by default.

The use case is that I want to scale a few images down before emailing
them. It is not at all obvious when looking at the edit menu that
resize should be anywhere else. Once you do find that you can resize
when doing export, it is less useful than an edit option since you
cannot preview the resized image to see if it looses too much detail.
