Chuck, Probably not. It would take a new install to truly replicate this and we've moved on to 10.04 for most installs now! However reinstalling the nis 3.17-25ubuntu1 package on 9.10 works so I'd presume that a patch to some other area has fixed the cause in passing. Regards Matthew L. Having this hint, I checked the code of the PHP-script which was:

mssql_connect(MSSQL_SERVER, MSSQL_USER, MSSQL_PASSWORD);
mssql_select_db(MSSQL_DATABASE);
So there was no error checking. In fact the hostname of the server was
wrong, this is why the connection did not succeed. After I fixed the
hostname, the code ran without the segmentation fault. It made no
difference, if I use define or put in the values for the connection
als strings.
So the bug is triggered, if the hostname for mssql_connect does not
exist.

I've upgraded the system to euca* 1.6.2-0ubuntu30.4 (much better that only the SC). I hope that rev 1235/1236 are in this release but according to the delivery dates it should be. So the status is better but I still see some errors while creating volumes with a loop (40) : Volume: Error while communicating with Storage Controller: CreateStorageVolume:Internal Error. With the creation of 40 volumes, this error is reported only one time (max 3 times). The deletion loop does not report any errors and a vgscan shows a clean system, great. If I run the creation loop several times I see in sc-stats.log that the amount of space used and the number of managed volumes never decrease. Above the limit (Disk space reserved for volumes) the previous error msg is returned for each creation request. Hi firebird, I won't speak for Chuck, but I will agree with his decision to close the bug report. The reason is, there's no pattern identified in the report that suggests a normal situation or a repeatable test case. When you say you tinkered and aren't sure, this makes it really hard for us to repeat the issue or identify what should be changed. Its not clear at all whether the file /etc/aliases was there, or not, and what exactly failed. Was working fine until today. They still mount, eventually, but slow down my login to gnome by an appreciable amount. This might also be of interest; dpkg.log.debug shows when the update- manager first tried to install the samba package updates, when I manually installed another package (x-screensaver) and when it failed again and crashed. The other is my boot.log... Public bug reported: Binary package hint: php5 The automated tests that are run during the build process try to run mysql relative to the build directory. Because of the apparmor profile, when mysql-server is installed, /usr/sbin/mysqld is only allowed arbitrary access under temp dirs (/tmp, /var/tmp, etc). Also bug #375371 proposes to go even further and restrict that to a dir owned and only writable by mysql. Proposed solution is to copy the necessary pieces of mysqld into the build directory and run them as part of the build step. This will prevent the apparmor profile for /usr/sbin/mysqld from being matched, and will allow the proposed security enhancement to go forward. I have tested this and it seems to work fine on maverick. I think that's cause for immediately opening a bug against the kernel. If I try to re-SSH into the box, however, it works again. It looks like the same thing that was happening, only the ARP entry doesn't change (i'm assuming it's because there's no guest) after it does. Are you sure the symbols are inaccurate? The patches that affect php_mssql.c just happen to add 32 lines of actual code... So maybe you hadn't patched the files yet?
