I have the same exact problem with my system on Ubuntu Natty 64-bit. I tried updating to the most recent ALSA driver daily version, uninstalling/re-installing, etc., hoping that perhaps something I did would resolve the situation, but nothing helped. However, it seems to me that performance is still a little better when *not* using twinview. This is not surprising. Regretfully compiz does have to use the detected frame rate for some (very few) things even with the fix. And if the frame rate reported by the driver is still wrong (TwinView enabled) then some things might still be slightly worse performing than with TwinView disabled. Hi, I just keep the acer-wmi module blacklisted. Once the card got deactivated somehow, I then removed the blacklist, restarted, reinserted the blacklist, restarted again, which made the card active and working again. Hotkeys for turning wireless on/off was not working but wireless LED indicated that WIFI was on all the time. Ubuntu asked me to upgrade to 11.04, and I did. In 11.04 my wireless did not work, still an wlan0 interface was present and ath5k driver loaded. Trying to activate wireless networking in the networkmanager did not activate wifi. I blacklisted acer-wmi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and wifi works again.
