[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server - Hadoop

2012-01-23 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  Target versions of Hadoop components:

  hadoop-0.20.205.0
  hcatalog-0.2.0
  pig-0.9.0
  hbase-0.90.4
hive-0.7.1 # the script I got from Hortonworks labels this as hive-0.7.1+
which includes fixes to hive. - Yes - we might need to look at that - we should
be able to overlay the fixes if need be without rebuilding the entire project
  zookeeper-3.3.2
Q: Their website indicates they will use ambari as something
devops/juju-like. Clearly we want to use juju but have they made any ambari
assumptions?
A: No idea - one to ask Matt

  Package naming:

  hadoop
  hcatalog
  pig
  hbase
  hive

  Needs confirmation (conflicts with archive):

  zookeeper

  Assumptions:

Packaging will use bigtop as a base.
   - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju
charms as and when they support precise.
Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process.
Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process.
Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via
hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we
create.
Patches may be required for native build components.
Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be
applied where appropriate.
--- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir
Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default).
Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ...
Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g.
./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar?
A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which
includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just
re-use these jars etc...

  Challenges:

hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches)
  JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a
specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth
re-using.
java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu
(generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro).
Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration
option to secure a cluster.
Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If
so, I can do the charm work.j
Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up
affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as
well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not
have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.
Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow
(maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution).

  hcatalog:
External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql?
No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to
produce release tarbal.

xavi@camagroc:~$ sudo fancontrol

And again, after the resuming from suspending, fan speed didn't stop at

Power failures and power returns are marked with NOTE in the logs.

I noticed that UPS.PowerSummary.RemainingCapacity came with input report

buggy firmware again...

Attached is a patch against the latest development version (Subversion trunk).
It also applies on 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 using (from within the top source dir):
$ patch -p0  /path/to/apc-hid-overflow.diff

Could you please test it (same procedure as before) and report back
(including a driver debug output) to see if things are going better?

cheers,

[Bug 917660] Re: Installing qemu-user-static in an i386 lxc container applies the binfmt changes to the host, breaking execution in that host

2012-01-23 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks, Guilherme. I'm sorry, should have mentioned that no, a new
kernel was not expected to fix that.

For lxc containers, we can (and should) fix this using an apparmor
policy.

I don't know if there is a reasonable way that update-binfmts itself can
detect this. I'll mark this as affecting that package to get more
input.

[Bug 920636] [NEW] Clearing up language in man page of ssh-keygen

2012-01-23 Thread Bosse Klykken
Public bug reported:

The man page of ssh-keygen states that if the passphrase is lost or
forgotten, a new key must be generated and copied to the corresponding
public key to other machines.

This seems to be a wording snafu. I've attached a small diff to attempt
a fix so that the meaning becomes more clear.

Actually, you can give a value of U to mean NaN, or I have no value
right now. I think it's documented on the munin trac wiki somewhere,
but I can't find it right now, and it's hard to search for.

Regarding this bug, I'm thinking we should disable autoconf for this
plugin, since it is marked legacy, and its functionality is
duplicated by diskstats. http://munin-monitoring.org/changeset/3003

[Bug 906735] Re: logrotate can't find /var/log/puppet if package was removed and that directory was empty

2012-01-23 Thread Adam Gandelman
Kenyon--

Looking into this further and other similar bugs, it seems this is the
expected behavior of logrotate. In this case, the logrotate output is
non-fatal and, although annoying, does not cause logrotate to abort its
run and fail to process other rotate configs. Puppet is a special case
in that its one of the few package that does not start its service on
package installation, resulting in an empty log directory until the
service is actually configured to start. If the directory is empty on
package removal, it will be deleted before the logrotate conf file which
isn't deleted until purge. The correct fix in your case is to --purge
the package from the system when output like this starts popping up from
cron. If this is an insufficient work around, I'd advise opening a bug
against logrotate to silence such messages (though I believe this has
been discussed in the past but turns out to be a non-trivial change)

If you'd like some context around the general problem and its fix,
please see Bug #256891.

It's also worth noting that this is issue is resolved in the current
Precise release by way of Debian bug #564947: http://bugs.debian.org

Thanks for the research and explanation! It's curious that the fix to
Debian bug #564947 didn't make it into oneiric, since the Debian bug
says it was fixed in puppet 2.6.5-1. Anyway, I trust you that it's

[Bug 920749] [NEW] pam configuration for SSH prevents LANG override

2012-01-23 Thread Ben Howard
Public bug reported:

The default /etc/pam.d/sshd configuration has:

# Read environment variables from /etc/environment and
# /etc/security/pam_env.conf.
#auth required pam_env.so # [1]
# In Debian 4.0 (etch), locale-related environment variables were moved to
# /etc/default/locale, so read that as well.
auth required pam_env.so envfile=/etc/default/locale

The default SSH client configuration has Send LC_* and the default SSH
server configuration has Accept LC_*. This prevent any user locale
settings from being sent via SSH.

For example, if /etc/default/locale has:
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=C

Then running LANG=zh_SG.utf8 LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8 ssh
myspecialhost.foo.bar.com yields:
ubuntu@ip-10-12-15-243:~$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=C
(output truncated for clarity)

While having a blank /etc/default/locale yeilds:
ubuntu@ip-10-12-15-243:~$ locale
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=zh_SG.utf8
LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8
(output truncated for clarity)

I think, although I am not sure, that this is a bug with the default
configuration. It means that in order for server to accept multple
languages or LC_* bindings, the system locale default would have to be
unset. Effectively this is forcing the system default on all users.

[Bug 615545] Re: Instances launched in a VPC cannot access ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

2012-01-23 Thread Felipe Reyes
The workaround used to know if the instance is inside a VPC isn't
working for me, I launched a EC2 instance and I assigned an Elastic IP
(all these using cloud formation), when cloud-init gets the metadata
this is what it gets:

# curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/
ami-id
ami-launch-index
ami-manifest-path
block-device-mapping/
hostname
instance-action
instance-id
instance-type
kernel-id
local-hostname
local-ipv4
mac
metrics/
network/
placement/
profile
public-ipv4
public-keys/
reservation-id
security-groups

$ curl http://169.2st/meta-data/public-ipv4
184.72.x.x

As you can see the field public-ipv4 appears in the metadata, so cloud-
init thinks the instance isn't running in a VPC and sets the apt mirror
to us-east1... and it takes me to the original situation. No access to
the repositories.

I fixed this behavior with the sugested key in cloud-config.yaml
(apt_mirror: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/).

[Bug 919429] Re: Munin IO Service Time graph gives completely implausible numbers

2012-01-23 Thread Tel
Agree that the IO Service time is made somewhat redundant by the Disk
Latency graph which shows much the same information. However, IO Service
time itemises read and write, and after coming this far, seems a shame
not to make the small fix to get it working properly.

[Bug 920844] [NEW] nut-client is missing /etc/init.d/ups-monitor for MODE=netclient (is in nut-server)

2012-01-23 Thread Tuomas Heino
Public bug reported:

Installed only nut-client in order to use nut with MODE=netclient -
/etc/init.d/nut seems to exist only in nut-server, which is otherwise
unnecessary for MODE=netclient.

As both nut-server and nut-client need /etc/init.d/nut, either it should
be moved to libupsclient1 or both packages should provide an
alternative.

[Bug 362875] Re: rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset

2012-01-23 Thread Brian Norris
In summary of my last 2 comments: all people commenting on this report
are not necessarily experiencing the same bug. They just all happen to
be using Ralink-based USB devices which share a driver/firmware
framework. The issues could be related but not necessarily.

I am marking this Incomplete until we have a set of good information
regarding a related issue on the most recent Ubuntu distribution with
proper logs, etc. That means something like the following:

1) Describe in detail how you reproduce your issue (i.e., step-by-step)
2) Describe your system, giving Ubuntu version, etc.
3) Provide the output from the following commands in your comment or as
separate attachments:
dmesg
lsusb
uname -a
lsusb -vv
dkpg -l | grep linux-firmware

If we find more than one set of valid logs that represent distinct
issues, then we should file new, separate bug reports.

(BTW, the logs attached by Andrea Carpineti are totally worthless; they
are not related to this bug and seem to apply to a Broadcom chip, not
Ralink)

[Bug 885324]

2012-01-23 Thread Hans-meelstraat
(In reply to comment #12)
On Ubuntu, we'd like to migrate everything away from liblcms1 by 12.04, which
means this would need to be done in the 1.4 timetable.

At a distro level, supporting 32-on-64 lcms2 is just as easy as lcms1. On
Ubuntu 12.04, for instance, it's already multiarched and you can just apt-get
install liblcms2-2:i386. So I'd expect it to be quite available.

Sure, but I asked about *current* distro versions. Without a reasonable
transition period Wine is forced to support both versions of liblcms.

[Bug 885324]

2012-01-23 Thread Scott Ritchie
Fair enough, but without supporting both versions for a bit we will
_never_ be able to migrate and will end up using a deprecated
unsupported library forever.

To answer your question as far as Ubuntu goes, 11.10, 11.04, 10.10, and
10.04 rely on ia32-libs, so in order to support them I'll have to update
the ia32-libs in the PPA to include liblcms2 (this isn't hard).

[Bug 920327]

2012-01-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/920327/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 920327] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 Power Settings Don't Work When Lid is Closed

2012-01-23 Thread Ubuntu Bug
Public bug reported:

I am using an ASUS laptop with Ubuntu 11.10. The laptop is connected to
an external HDMI monitor. The laptop screen is disabled and all output
goes to the HDMI monitor.

I went to System Settings - Power and I chose to do nothing when
the lid is closed. Unfortunately the system doesn't do nothing when
I close the lid. When I close the laptop lid the system suspends the
computer.

In addition the blank screen option does not exist anymore under when
the lid is closed. Please bring back the blank screen option. Thank
you for your help.

[Bug 885324]

2012-01-23 Thread Hans-meelstraat
(In reply to comment #10)
It seems this is no longer a mere enhancement request and needs some
 escalation
in priority - liblcms1 is deprecated upstream, not receiving fixes, and is
being slated for removal from distributions. See, for instance,
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lcms/+bug/885324

When will liblcms1 be removed from which distributions? How about 32-bit
versions of liblcms2 for current 64-bit distros? I doubt we want to support
both version 1 and version 2 of liblcms in Wine.

[Bug 920338] [NEW] Bluetooth applet doesn't seem to connect audio devices succesfully
