[Bug 1109029] Re: Depend on linux-initramfs-tools

2013-02-03 Thread Florian Feldhaus
I disagree. Dracut builds fine from source and builds initrds which are usable.
As dracut offers additional features compared to initramfs-tools, it is
required in certain use cases. As dracut can be installed in parallel to
initramfs-tools without interfering with its functionality, this issue should
be solved even if dracut is not the official way for creating initrds in Ubuntu
right now.
If this issue is not solved, dracut cannot be installed. Thus either this issue
has to be resolved or the package dracut needs to be dropped from Ubuntu.
Either way, the importance of this bug is certainly not wishlist.

[Bug 1109029] Re: Depend on linux-initramfs-tools

2013-02-03 Thread Andrea Corbellini
** Description changed:

Many core packages depend on initramfs-tools when they should actually
depend on linux-initramfs-tools (virtual package provided by initramfs-
  tools and dracut).

Debian seems to be using Depends: initramfs-tools | linux-initramfs-
tools for almost every relevant package.
+
+ See also bug #1108987, which is about the fact that dracut shouldn't
+ conflict with initramfs-tools.

Nautilus in Ubuntu 8.04 has the ability to write to my SMB server.
I can not do this with Ubuntu 10.04. I have yet to test 12.04
The fast work around is to load GNOME COMMANDER to transfer your files.

It looks like there is some quoting missing from the ssh-copy-id script

Possibly related:
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1164
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1980

Apologies if this is logged against the incorrect component. ssh-copy-id
seems to call ssh-add but it's more than likely a problem with the
script rather than ssh-add.

Re: [Bug 105458] Re: [needs-packaging] HandBrake

2013-02-03 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Hi, Paul.

(I'm CC'ing pkg-multimedia-maintainers, as there are many people there
interested in handbrake---and they have done a lot to help me getting
handbrake in shape in Debian).

On Feb 03 2013, Paul Gevers wrote:
On 02-02-13 12:31, Rogério Theodoro de Brito wrote:
The only reason why it was uploaded to experimental is that we didn't want

Ok, understood. Does this mean that a sync request for Ubuntu is safe.

Yes, it is. Just be sure to make it clear to the users (perhaps updating the
package's long description) that the package does not have the two features
that I cited due to sad licensing reasons.

Of course, those that only use things will curse and moan, but they don't
know how it is to get these things straight.

Just for the record, the package is with reduced functionality, due to
  license reasons:

Understood, but as Ubuntu follows Debian if nobody put in the time to do
something different, I think that is 100% acceptable.

OK, great.

Any kind of help is mostly appreciated, especially when talking to upstream
  and:

This is not a package that is so trivial to make available on a distribution
and I have spent many weeks trying to get it to a point where it was able to
  be included in Debian.

I am currently working on getting an other project (openmotif) in shape
for Debian. After that I might have the time to help if it is then still
 needed.

Help is surely wanted. I am more or less stagnated with this, because I have
not been able to put the necessary time to talk with upstream.

Convincing them to cut a new stable release would be superb, as:

1 - They have some important features there (e.g., bob deinterlacing, a lot
of work fixing subtitles etc).

*and*

2 - It would make packaging significantly easier, as they are churning out
new patches to third-party libraries that we already have in Debian (but
not necessarity in patched form), and it would take coordination with
maintainers of other packages, so that we all have compatible stuff.

From handbrake's point of view, it is certainly the faster route to continue
the development patching the libraries that they need (and bundle such
libraries), but it is a major burden for distributions that want to have
handbrake available in their repositories.

More frequent releases from their part would be so much appreciated.

[Bug 1113703] Re: Trying to connect using a GSM modem without SIM card is not reported to user

2013-02-03 Thread Marius B. Kotsbak
Japp, that is what I was about to propose for the case above. Is the
error saved to that just an API extension is needed?

I think for MM 0.6.x or for some other modem models, the modem is
initialized fine, but it fails during connecting. Those cases are
probably easier to fix, since there is a call to MM when the user
connects that could contain the right error return code to display to
the user.

We probably don't want to spam the user at every init if the modem has
no SIM and the user doesn't want to insert any (integrated modem but not
currently in use).

Re: [Bug 105458] Re: [needs-packaging] HandBrake

 Hi, Paul.

On Feb 03 2013, Paul Gevers wrote:

The only reason why it was uploaded to experimental is that we didn't want

Ok, understood. Does this mean that a sync request for Ubuntu is safe.

Yes, it is. Just be sure to make it clear to the users (perhaps updating the
package's long description) that the package does not have the two features
that I cited due to sad licensing reasons.

I would just ask for a SYNC, which means that the description is taken
over as it is now in Debian. Don't you think the Debian users would want
this warning as well, so that it warrants an update there?

Of course, those that only use things will curse and moan, but they don't
know how it is to get these things straight.

Fully ACK. I have been involved in those kind of discussions before.

I understand. So you are basically saying that so far Handbrake upstream
has not seen much interest in being nice to distributions? Shame on them
then, or is it just that they don't know but are willing to learn?

Paul

[Bug 1114173] [NEW] Sync handbrake 0.9.8+dfsg1-2 (universe) from Debian experimental (main)

2013-02-03 Thread Paul Gevers
Public bug reported:

Please sync handbrake 0.9.8+dfsg1-2 (universe) from Debian experimental
(main)

Handbrake is already in the bpo for Quantal. It would make sense to have
the latest also in Raring. This would also close a long standing request
for packaging [bug 105458].

All changelog entries:

handbrake (0.9.8+dfsg1-2) experimental; urgency=low

  [ Dmitry Smirnov ]
  * adding handbrake-dbg package
  * adding man pages
  * libdvdread4 (= 4.2.0+20120521-3) to Recommends:
  * removing ccache (obsolete) from Build-depends

  [ Fabian Greffrath ]
  * Versioned recommends are moot, use versioned Breaks instead.

  [ Reinhard Tartler ]
  * Fix version numbering.
The git snapshot id really needs to be part of the
upstream version. I'm leaving that out for now to avoid having to
reroll a new tarball, we'll handle it properly on the next
upstream version.

handbrake (0.9.8+dfsg1-1~19.gbpc8b9ba) experimental; urgency=low

  * Team upload.

  [ Rogério Brito ]
  * Note: This is an almost complete rework of the packaging included in
previous iterations of handbrake. This changelog reflects only a
fraction of the work that went into make it suitable for Debian and
involved the work of many people. For the complete list of changes,
we kindly refer you to the git repository for all the details.
  * Many janitorial fixes to the packaging, including:
+ Force bug reporting to go Debian's BTS.
+ Convert the package to format 3.0 (quilt).
+ Add me as Maintainer.
+ Add Reinhard Tartler to Uploaders.
+ Install upstream's changelog.
+ Add DEP-3 metadata to patches.
+ First approximation of a DEP-5-like format.
+ Use max xz compression with 'extreme' strategy for debs.
+ Add versioned pre-depends on dpkg for xz compression.
  * Mark patches that were forwarded upstream.
  * Fix build-dependencies/compilation fixes:
+ Include libdbus-glib-1-dev, libgtk-2.0-dev.
+ Remove unused libxvidcore-dev, libfaac-dev.
+ Don't use external sources for libraries that we already have
in debian, by including (but not limited to):
  libx264-dev, libbluray-dev, libdvdnav-dev, libdvdread-dev,
  libmpeg2-4-dev, various components of libav.
Thanks to Daniel Baumann for uploading suitable, new versions
  libdvd{nav,read} in time.
  * debian/patches:
+ 0001-Remove-encoding-...:
Remove encoding indication from desktop file, spotted by lintian.
+ 0002-Fix-include-with-the-system-s-libav:
Use Debian's libav instead of ffmpeg 0.7 downloaded and patched
at build time. Thanks to Fabian Greffrath for the cleaner solution.
+ 0003-Remove-embedded-...:
+ 0004-Enable-compilation-on-Debian-arches...:
Adapt kFreeBSD compilation patch to work with the HURD. Thanks to
Pino Toscano for the review and modifications.
+ 0005-libhb-Fix-compilation-with-mp4v2-v1.9.1-...:
+ 0006-LinGUI-Allow-user-to-pass-libavcodec-settings-...:
+ 0007-Fix-for-compilation-with-Debian-s-libbluray:
+ 0008-Fix-for-compilation-with-Debian-s-libdca:
+ 0010-Remove-FAAC-dependency:
Patch to remove use of FAAC---it is non-free and there are good
enough solutions for use as substitutes.
+ 0011-First-try-at-removing-some-of-mp4v2:
First try at removing some of mp4v2---linking mp4v2 against
handbrake results in undistributable binaries, which poses a problem
  for Debian.
  * debian/patches:
+ Add 0014-Use-unpatched-a52.patch for use with future releases.
  * debian/patches:
+ Add 0015-use-metadata-reading-from-libav.patch to avoid using mp4v2
and, therefore, a license problem with linking MPL1.1 code.
  * Wrap long lines in the changelog.
  * debian/patches: Add patch to fix memcpy with overlapping memory regions.
  * Imported Upstream version 0.9.8
  * debian/patches:
+ 0001-Remove-encoding-...: remove, applied upstream.
+ 0004-Enable-compilation-on-Debian-arches...: partially applied
  upstream, adjust.
+ 0006-LinGUI-Allow-user-to-pass-libavcodec-settings-...: remove,
  applied upstream.
+ 0011-First-try-at-removing-some-of-mp4v2: partially applied
  upstream, adjust.
+ 0012-FLAGS.patch: remove, applied upstream.
+ Refresh remaining patches.
+ 0016-...: Use unpatched libmkv for the moment.
  * debian/rules: Simplify, after changes accepted upstream.

  [ Andres Mejia ]
  * Change Priority to optional.
  * Add myself to Uploaders field.
  * Add default gbp options to enable pristine-tar.

  [ Reinhard Tartler ]
  * fix my email address
  * Upload to experimental
  * Remove ccache diversion
  * Prune the following subdirectories from the upstream tarball:
 - contrib/
 - download/
 - macosx/
 - win/

  [ Fabian Greffrath ]
  * Bring master branch back to pristine upstream branch + patches
  * Add versions to build-dependencies on libdvdnav-dev and

[Bug 399902] Re: xinput and synclient forget user settings on resume

2013-02-03 Thread Per Wahlström
12.04, I think I have a related problem but with a USB mouse.

If you have a script like 20_custom-ehci_hcd in any of the sleep.d
dirs, this may be the culprit here, since it unbinds hcd drivers upon
sleep.

xinput settings are lost on resume, and a 000-script in sleep.d fails
because the device is not seen yet.

To summarize:
Before suspend, 'xinput list' shows my USB mouse and keyboard devices.
On resume, while executing sleep.d scripts, the USB devices is missing from
'xinput list', even after 20_custom-ehci_hcd script has re-bound them.
After resume has completed, 'xinput list' shows the USB devices.

So, X does not rediscover the rebound devices until after the sleep.d
scripts have run.

Why not have Eject for USB sticks and other removable media, and Safely
remove for external hard disks? For USB sticks and alike, Eject is alright,
because it's usually safe. But for an external hard disk, it should be made
more safe:
Clicking Safely remove should show a dialog window to confirm the action, so
that users don't do this by accident.

[Bug 1016165] Re: virtualbox-guest-dkms 4.1.16-dfsg-2: virtualbox-guest kernel module failed to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘do_mmap’]

re: yr comment#30

In Linux this is called workaround

A fix would be to have a reliable version available from
packagemanagment. And the common way for that is asking the devs to
upgrade the software-version, if... this doesn't happen from its own
powers.

menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-36-generic (recovery mode)' --class ubuntu

I uncommented BAD BOY and everything was fine.

[Bug 1087519] Re: Serial port ttyS4 doesn't work in 12.04

2013-02-03 Thread Krzysztof Radka
Roger,
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEAFAULT attaches its options to default GRUB menu item only.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX does it for each item (recovery modes too).

Since you can edit GRUB item line at while boot time, it is up to you which one
to choose.
But there is no reason to change any of those lines if you did not succeed by
editing grub start lines.

Re: GRUB_SERIAL_COMMAND
the GNU Grub Manual says it is to conf serial line, while booting box via it.

Please confirm or not that pci=nocrs is just temporary in the active
(by pressing shift, then escape) grub screen, and will disappear on the
next boot.

Everything you enter to GRUB command WHILE BOOTING your box (i.e. upon
pressing e while Grub menu is seen) is TEMPORARY and active for that
particular boot only. Therefore you can test new options being added to
kernel in a safe way.

What you add to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX... and issue update-grub afterwards is

I experienced my problems upon upgrading to Ubu 12.04 LTS from 8.04 and
changing my mobo to AMD990FX-based (Asus Sabertooth). My modem is ZOOM PCI 2920
(not sure about the number).
First success came upon adding pci=routeirq option. Then I upgraded BIOS to
version 1604 and modem got not accessible again (frankly speaking it was
accessible all that time, but its replies went to nowhere due to wrong IRQ
assignment).

Look at your /var/log/dmesg and grep ttyS there. Focus on IRQ number assigned
by kernel. Check in /proc/interrupts if that number is used by bus you have put
your modem into, and what device driver cares about that IRQ. You should find
8250 or serial as driver names for your modem if it operates right ( not
your case alas!).
So if there is IRQ number assigned at boot time ( as checked in dmesg log), and
there is not right driver assigned to that IRQ at run time ( as seen in
/proc/interrupts) you should focus on investigating events happened in between.

If nothing helps you may try kernel option irqpoll. The option will
make CPU to care about the interrupts. In general the option will slow
machine, but this may not be your case if you are not running several
GigaEthernets links.

As a valuable experience you may connect the modem to phone line and
call the modem through another phone. I wonder if you would see kernel
complains about nobody cares on your terminal.

[Bug 916677] Re: unstable boot on Asrock 990FX Extreme4 motherboard probably related to the onboard Marvel SE9120 SATA controller

2013-02-03 Thread DjkMyth
This issue affects my ASRock 990FX Extreme4 motherboard too, with
current latest release bios v2.00.

Windows is fine, using the Win7 SP1 64bit install CD.

But Linux is problematic to say the least.

I have tried:
Kubuntu 12.04.1 amd64 DVD and Alternate
Xubuntu 12.10 amd64 Desktop
LinuxMint 14.1 Cinnamon DVD 64bit

and even:
System Rescue CD x86 3.3.0 - gentoo based - does this mean it's an issue in
common with other distros?

...all with very limited success. For me I get about 1 successful boot
out of every 10 attempts.

I just managed to get kubuntu installed, and it does seem to work OK if
it boots up, but I haven't tested it for a long.

I suggest the name of this thread is misleading, since I seem to have
the same boot problems whether I disable the Marvell chip in the UEFI
BIOS or not.

However I can confirm that turning off the Onboard IDE 1394 controller
has changed the boot up freezes for the better - since I made the change
it has booted straight up into kubuntu 4 times in a row now...

Unfortunately that is not an adequate workaround for me since I have a
PATA DVD drive, and a PATA HDD for backups, and all the SATA ports are
filled with SATA HDDs. For me, to not use the Onboard IDE would remove
the whole reason for buying this mobo!

It would be nice to know if/when the Linux drivers for the IDE chipset
on this mobo are fixed - it would seem odd for this to be the only mobo
that used the hardware with the offending drivers...

Anyway, thanks for posting your workaround - at least I know it's not
just me going mad now

[Bug 1114248] [NEW] python-poppler-qt4 should be rebuilt when python-sip is upgraded

2013-02-03 Thread Joseph Wakeling
Public bug reported:

The python-poppler-qt4 package needs to be rebuilt whenever python-sip
is updated, or possibly whenever the version of sip-api implemented by
python-sip is updated.

An example as to why is provided by the following past bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/frescobaldi/+bug/939196

... where the Frescobaldi package in Ubuntu was unable to run correctly due to
incorrect sip bindings. The same issue appears to have re-arisen with the
latest python-poppler-qt4 package:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/frescobaldi/+bug/1103746

It's clear that these issues will continue to arise so long as the
relationship between python-poppler-qt4 and python-sip is not addressed
in the build/packaging process.

I don't know what the situation is upstream in Debian, but it's probably
worth making sure that this issue propagates there to ensure any fix
here is not overwritten by newly-imported Debian packages.

[Bug 1114259] [NEW] Opening files on an MTP device doesn't work

2013-02-03 Thread jhoechtl
Public bug reported:

kio-mtp is meant to support KDE to copy to and from MTP devices. After
installing kio-mtp my smartphones files appear in Dolphin, yet the
integration behaves eratically:

* Opening files e.g. pictures in Gwenview will have progress bar
spinning for a while doing nothing. If I try to copy a file manually
afterwards using Dolphin a pop-up box appears saying The process for
the mtp protocol died unexpectedly

[Bug 1096437] Re: touchpad and AMD Radeon HD 7290M

2013-02-03 Thread Alex Kuklin
I own same laptop.

Touchpad does not work until Touchpad on/off key pressed (fn+F7).

Videoadapter is working in VESA mode since neither opensource nor
catalyst driver support this chipset (just checked 13.1 catalyst bundle
with no luck).

That's for Debian, but I believe it's same in Ubuntu.

[Bug 1112688] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2013-02-03 Thread Marty Clark
Hi Dave, managed to fix y ALSA driver and have internal sound back.
Ubuntu will recognise my terratec card out of the box and is listed as
such using lsusb:

Bus 002 Device 008: ID 0ccd:0080 TerraTec Electronic GmbH
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:8189 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless
802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 5986:0200 Acer, Inc OrbiCam
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

But it doesn't show up in alsamixer nor when I probe using aplay -l.

Thinking that the module 'snd_usb_6fire' needs to be inserted into my
kernel. The modprobe command returns this error though:

insmod /lib/modules/3.5.0-23-generic/extra/snd-usb-6fire.ko
FATAL: Error inserting snd_usb_6fire
(/lib/modules/3.5.0-23-generic/extra/snd-usb-6fire.ko): Invalid argument

Any ideas?!

[Bug 999191] Re: X crashes with gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11

2013-02-03 Thread G.C. Hassink
I tried to do that in the mean time (using Alt F2), but no web browser
in terminal, so couldn't finish it, and haven't been able to locate the
report yet. Anyhow, I googled a little further and learned that
compizconfig settings manager is a notorious culprit. So I did a compiz
revert to standard followed by a unity --reset and uninstall of CCSM.
And now it seems stable for quit some days

Sorry if this is not the appropriate spot to put this comment, but
hopefully it will be of use to someone else.
