[Bug 920749]
So we could define a channel request that could be interpreted by the server to attempt to set the locale-related environment variables. How about something like: byte SSH_MSG_CHANNEL_REQUEST uint32recipient channel stringloc...@openssh.com stringlanguage stringcharset Where language might be en_GB and charset might be UTF-8. [Bug 1124384] Re: Configuration reload clears event that others jobs may be waiting on
** Description changed: + [Impact] + + * The status of blocked events was not preserved, when upstart +performed stateful re-execution or configuration reload. Thus jobs +with complex start/stop conditions (one or more and clauses), +with at least one event emitted before re-exec/reload, may not +execute when remaining conditions are finally satisfied. + + * Above may prevent certain system to function correctly, and in the +cases similar to cloud-init instances may even cause failure to +boot. + + * The fix includes incriminating reference counts on blocked events, +whilst job configuration is reloaded and fully serialising all +upstart objects, including blocked events, during stateful +re-execution. + + * Since previous versions of upstart, do not serialise blocked events +the upgrade needs special casing. On upgrade upstart will perform +stateful re-execution, unless runlevel 2 has been already +reached. Instead upstart, will re-executed at system shutdown. This +should allow upgrading upstart during early boot of cloud-init +instances. But do note, that old instance of upstart will still be +running as init and the running machine will still be affected by +the bug described here. + + [Test Case] + + * Create a sample job /etc/init/foo.conf similar to this: + + start on (event1 and event2) + task + exec date + + * Test reload configuration works correctly: + + $ sudo status foo + foo stop/waiting + $ sudo initctl emit -n event1 + $ sudo initctl reload-configuration + $ sudo initctl emit -n event2 + $ sudo tail /var/log/upstart/foo.log + + At the end one should see a timestamp appended in the foo.log. + + * Test stateful re-exec works correctly: + + $ sudo initctl emit -n event1 + $ sudo telinit u + $ sudo initctl emit -n event2 + $ sudo tail /var/log/upstart/foo.log + + [Regression Potential] + + * The bug fix introduced here is fairly large (approx 1.5k line diff) +but comes with comprehensive set of test-suites to verify the two +bug fixes as well as all possible combinations of stateful +re-execution serialisation formats. Majority of code changes are +for additional [de]serialisation, which follow existing well tested +code pattern. And changes to reference counting have been carefully +reviewed and tested by multiple developers. + + * While the bug report indicates a severe problem, it was not noticed +until recently, as the system must be under heavy race conditions +to become affected by this bug. Since systems reaching stable state, +with little or no blocked events left, would not normally be +affected. + + * Overall regression potential is deemed low. + + [Original Bug Report] + Under bug 1080841 we made cloud-init invoke 'initctl reload- configuration' after it wrote a upstart job. This was necessary because inotify is not supported on all filesystems (overlayfs being the one of most current interst). This seems to be causing upstart some pain, and resulting in cloud-final (and 'rc') not being run. Easy user-data to reproduce the problem is: #cloud-config-archive - content: | #cloud-boothook #!/bin/sh touch /run/cloud-init-upstart-reload # hack, see trunk commit 783 - content: | #!/bin/sh echo $(date -R): user-script run === | tee /run/user-script.log - content: | #upstart-job description a test upstart job start on stopped rc RUNLEVEL=[2345] console output task script echo $(date -R): upstart job run === | tee /run/upstart-job.log end script You should (and do on quantal) end up with 2 files written to /run. I've verified that the same behavior is true on quantal. If you change cloud-init to notify upstart about a job immediately after it writes it, then quantal's upstart gets confused also. Related bugs: * bug 1080841: should reload configuration if an upstart job is added * bug 1103881: cloud-final is never executed if upstart is upgraded during initialization of the image -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cloud-init in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1124384 Title: Configuration reload clears event that others jobs may be waiting on To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-init/+bug/1124384/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I asked in #ubuntu-dev just now if we want to convert daemons in universe to upstart when there's no particular other reason, and the answer was yes, we do. Have you forgotten to source /etc/default/freeradius to pick up any FREERADIUS_OPTIONS settings? Apart from that it lgtm, assuming it's tested and it works. Looks like you've taken care to carry over the required initialisation checks (mkdir -p and ownership). [Bug 1188011] [NEW] should conflict with quantal linux-image-extra-* packages
Public bug reported: I have both precise and quantal in my sources.list. Whenever I do an `apt-get install linux-image-generic/quantal` and there is a ~precise version similar to the version linux-image-generic depends on, apt-get always picks the precise version first, which contains all the files of linux-image-*-generic/quantal plus the files of linux- image-extra-*-generic. I always have to specify e.g. linux- image-3.5.0-32-generic/quantal for apt-get to pick the correct package. Pinning does not help, as any pinning that selects the quantal package also selects the precise package. I believe making linux-image-*-generic*~precise conflict with linux- image-extra-* (each specific version in conflict with the respective specific version) would remove this problem. It would also make sense, because these packages do in fact conflict -- they contain an overlapping set of files. ** Affects: linux-lts-quantal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1188011 Title: should conflict with quantal linux-image-extra-* packages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-quantal/+bug/1188011/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1055866] Re: Combine all official derivatives differing only in default desktop environment to single distribution
Hi Kip, One downside to the plan suggested in the bug is that download times would be increased ( for those who know just want one DE or know which one they want and just want to download that.) (Internet is slow in some parts of the world) But it would indeed decrease the download time for those who would like to try out the different DEs by removing redundancy in what is downloaded for that scenario. another method to consider is the alternate / minimal installer, which is actually quite efficient, with a beginners (default) mode for new users. (and those that know that they would have an internet connection upon installing.) From: Kip Warner k...@thevertigo.com To: jtantog...@yahoo.com Sent: Wednesday, 29 May 2013, 0:39 Subject: [Bug 1055866] Re: Combine all official derivatives differing only in default desktop environment to single distribution Dmitrijs, you are missing the point. The point was not that everyone should be using the same thing, but that we can reduce the number of discs for a specific architecture the general public handles to a single one, while preserving freedom of choice. Available space for the necessary packages on the storage medium is not an issue anymore, now that we are no longer limited to a 700 MB compact disc. ** Summary changed: - Combine all official derivatives differing only in default desktop environment to single distribution + Coalesce some official derivatives to single while preserving freedom of desktop choice -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1055866 Title: Coalesce some official derivatives to single while preserving freedom of desktop choice Status in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Ubuntu currently has a number of official derivatives. These include the following. Xubuntu - Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop environment Ubuntu Studio - Designed for multimedia editing and creation Mythbuntu - Designed for creating a home theatre PC with MythTV Kubuntu - Ubuntu with the K Desktop environment Edubuntu - Ubuntu for education Lubuntu - Ubuntu that uses LXDE It is a good idea to offer users the freedom of choice to select an appropriate derivative, but this can probably be done better by simplifying the number of official derivatives that differ only in the default desktop environment by collapsing them into a single official distribution. Ubuntu Studio, Mythbuntu, and Edubuntu are sufficiently conceptually different enough from one another to warrant separate distributions, whereas Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu are all different in the same way. They differ only really based on the default desktop environment. That choice alone perhaps does not warrant the availability and support of distinct distributions. Instead, a single official distribution for all those that differ only in terms of the default desktop environment could give the user a choice during installation time of the default desktop environment to use, leaving Unity as the default as it currently is for vanilla Ubuntu, respecting Canonical's commitment to that desktop environment for new users or for those who are comfortable with the default choice, while providing brief summaries of the other options if the user makes the appropriate selection (e.g. Xfce, Lxde, Gnome, KDE). This has many added benefits, not least of which is the reduction in the number of different types of DVD discs that need to be replicated and only one type that needs to be on hand at Ubuntu community events. I think some kind of warning through the GUI about Lucid's GUI bits having reached end-of-life would've been appropriate if that is what is behind Lucid being unable to connect to ubuntuone, but that's a different issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462828 Title: Files are marked for deletion on server when syncdaemon is killed during sync: Capabilities mismatch is displayed for outdated clients. Yes, 32-bit ubuntu 13.04 has the same problem. 2013/6/6 bjornegil bejohan...@gmail.com I have the same problem. UX31E. x86_64. [Bug 1188036] [NEW] debian-keyring is a rather heavyweight Recommends for ubuntu-dev-tools, perhaps demote to Suggests?
Public bug reported: debian-keyring was promoted from a Suggests to a Recommends as a result of a user report in bug 717245. However, either behaviours of tools have changed since then, or there was confusion between errors and warnings - if I use pull-debian-source without having debian-keyring installed on raring, the only downside is a couple of minor warning messages printed: gpgv: Can't check signature: public key not found dpkg-source: warning: failed to verify signature on ./squashfs-tools_4.2+20130409-1.dsc but the package is unpacked successfully. debian-keyring is a huge package (42MB .deb) compared to ubuntu-dev-tools (157K .deb), so I'd suggest that it be demoted to a Suggests again, given the only purpose is to enable an optional feature. This is of course a somewhat a matter of opinion, so feel free to Won't Fix if you don't agree. ** Affects: ubuntu-dev-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1188036 Title: debian-keyring is a rather heavyweight Recommends for ubuntu-dev- tools, perhaps demote to Suggests? [Bug 376464] Re: Software Centre, Synaptic should point to the DDTP
I want to expose two issues which are not directly related to the implementation of this feature but I believe to be important if we are to achieve significant contributions through this newly introduced workflow. As a long time translation team coordinator I have noticed that it's very important for translators to get fast feedback and good translation experience. If they translate a few strings and nothing happens in a more than a week or maximum two weeks most of them will get discouraged and it's far less likely they will continue with translation effort. In the implementation of this feature I see two main bottlenecks: * I assume translations will be accepted as suggestions. This means someone will need to review them and confirm them before they are used. Many language teams are not going to check ddtp templates on weekly basis and strings might stay unreviewed for a very long time. Some sort of notification system should be implemented or there should be a clear link who the new translator should try to contact if strings are unreviewd for a longer period of time * Once the strings are confirmed they are only updated sporadicly in Ubuntu. I suggest weekly or biweekly exports of translations so that translators can quickly notice their work makes a difference and are motivated to contribute more. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376464 Title: Software Centre, Synaptic should point to the DDTP To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/+bug/376464/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1188057] Re: package libgif4 4.1.6-10ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal: sudo apt-get clean Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. Thanks in advance!
