This is a rarely used computer. I'm sure it is not disk errors, as it never gave any problem before, but failed to wake up the HD instead, each and every time that I tried. I got disk errors on other machines before, so I know what it means. I.e., if it is disk errors, the the error sequence reported above will be entirely different. No I can't use apport-collect, as it's function is to automatically generate crash reports for debugging. The above patch is what I'm running locally against Icehouse. It does not seem that complicated, unless I am missing something major. You are missing the point: the problem is with the symbols, not the library name. You cannot have two libraries with the same symbols in the same process - in this case the VLC process. So either x264 should be linked statically; I believe this is what upstream recommends. It disappears after some time, but no application could be launched after that. All windows show loading Only reboot helps. Also I notices that if I disable bluetooth right after reboot it couldn't be enabled again until next reboot. Even though the Glib docs says we should use base 1000 to display Network and storage sizes I don't agree. They might have their rationale for this, but almost everything else displays KiB as KB(I know this is wrong) or at the best, they display file size as KiB. Even browsers(Firefox, Chromium...) and the majority of websites display KiB as KB. They are not ignorants or idiots, they're just not trying to confuse users. All in all, I think that Thunar should use base 1024 notation, because it's not wrong and it's no confusing for the user, for example: Oh, I downloaded this 60,4 MB file(the site and the browser told the user this), but Thunar says this is 63.3 MB. The funny thing is that if everybody is not following the standard, the one that follows is seen as wrong. André, I am thinking of two solutions: 1. Add a configuration option with a proper GUI and keep the defaults (k=10^3). Preferably, call the 2^10 prefix Ki. If not, switch the column header name to Size (binary). In Properties dialogs and in the status bar use both systems (e.g. 9.7GB / 9.0GiB). 2. I have the same start-stop sequence lag on a Dell Vostro 1720 with i8kutils 1.41 on Debian. By shutting down i8kmon (/etc/init.d/i8kmon stop) and switching to manual i8kfan commands I can reproduce the lag/freeze for some commands, and not for others; cat /proc/i8k does not cause lag/freeze. The command i8kctl temp returns 55 and does not cause a lag/freeze. The command i8kfan 0 2 returns -1 2 (and makes the fan run fast) and does not cause a lag/freeze. The command i8kfan 0 0 returns -1 0 (and stops the fan) and causes a short lag/freeze. Dear Christopher, After my last comment I updated the system by running apt-get update apt-get upgrade. After that, the NVIDIA card stopped working, but was still recognized. So, I wswitched to the nouveau driver and ran purge nvidia* in order to clean install the latest nvidia driver. If it's just a question of someone stepping up to maintain it, I would volunteer to do it. I'd suggest you contact the Debian maintainer of this package (see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/gputils) regarding when a newer version might be packaged. The normal route is that newer versions of packages are packaged in Debian and then synced automatically to Ubuntu. Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu better. The underlying reason for this problem is language-pack-nb-base 1:14.04+20140707 which is only available in trusty-proposed, not the offical repositories. -proposed is used to test newer versions of packages to make sure they build and work as expected before they are migrated over to the regular repositories and become available for everyone. This usually takes a short amount of time, but it looks like this package has been stuck in -proposed since July this year. Presumably the newer version of language-pack-nb has been built against the dependencies available in -proposed but since the underlying changes hasn't been migrated over it causes problems because it requests a newer version than the commonly available one. The dutch/flemish language pack is affected by a similar problem (bug 1394923), and presumable other languages too.
