[Bug 1402657] [NEW] etckeeper doesn't commit. Missing executable permissions on /etc/etckeeper/commit.d/50vcs-commit

2014-12-15 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu (hjmf)
Public bug reported:

Etckeeper doesn't work out of the box on Ubuntu 14.10

The command etckeeper commit fails without any output.

The problem is that the script 50vcs-commit doesn't have execution
permissions.

Noticed in etckeeper at ubuntu 14.10

root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 14.10
Release:14.10
root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# apt-cache policy etckeeper
etckeeper:
  Installed: 1.11ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.11ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.11ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ utopic/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The root cause is that 50vcs-commit never gets executed because it lacks
permissions:

root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# ls -la /etc/etckeeper/commit.d/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 15 13:55 .
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Dec 15 13:55 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 447 Jun 4 2014 10vcs-test
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 138 Jun 4 2014 30bzr-add
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 302 Jun 4 2014 30darcs-add

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 264 Jun 4 2014 99push
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 193 Jun 4 2014 README

To reproduce the problem:

Install etckeeper on Ubuntu 14.04. Nothing gets commited.

root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# etckeeper init
Creado un standalone tree (formaot: 2a)
adding .bzrignore
adding .etckeeper
adding .java
adding ConsoleKit
adding ImageMagick
adding Muttrc
[...]

root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# etckeeper vcs status
unknown:
  .bzrignore
  .etckeeper
  .java/
  ConsoleKit/
  ImageMagick/
  Muttrc
  [...]

root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# etckeeper commit initial revision
root@ulises2:/etc/etckeeper# etckeeper vcs status
added:
  .bzrignore
  .etckeeper
  .java/
  .java/.systemPrefs/
  .java/.systemPrefs/.system.lock
  .java/.systemPrefs/.systemRootModFile
  [...]

To fix the problem

Give exectuable permissions to  /etc/etckeeper/commit.d/50vcs-commit::

chmod +x /etc/etckeeper/commit.d/50vcs-commit
etckeeper commit initial revision
etckeeper vcs log

[Bug 1400792] Re: Silent ext4 read error

2014-12-15 Thread Paolo Maero
I did some tests this weekend. I made a copy of the test directory into a
second HD and I did write a small compare utility to check how many bytes are
different for each file.
I've see that there's always just one byte different between files, it's always
the same bit wrong and always of big files, while files not matching varies
between compare executions.

First compare of pictures directory files:

files differ: byte 025d4862, 8a != 82 (08), file1:

Same problem but can't solve with workaround mentioned here.
Ubuntu12.04
Thunderbird 31.0
Attached localstore.rdf that gets recreated after each time I erase it.

Not a big deal but annoying :-)

[Bug 1402632] Re: issue with glance python client in Icehouse

2014-12-15 Thread Louis Taylor
I'm not seeing that over in my environment with a clean install of
glanceclient from pip. What happens if you do:

$ glance --os-image-api-version 2 image-list

or:

$ glance --os-image-api-version 1 image-list

The error you're seeing should appear when glanceclient has failed to
import the relevant versioned module.

[Bug 1402666] [NEW] [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Public bug reported:

If an HDMI monitor is plugged into the video out and the Videos app is
started, the Systems Settings Sound Output shows only the Speakers,
Built-in Audio in the Play sound through listing. The HDMI option is not
presented.

The workaround is to open the VLC app which lists the Built-in Stereo (HDMI)
option under its Audio Audio Devices menu.

When a video is started in VLC, having selected the HDMI option, the sound
plays through the monitor speakers. The HDMI / Display Port , Built-in Audio
item then appears in the Play sound through window, even though the selection
highlight remains on Speakers. The sound output can be switched between either
output by highlighting the chosen option.

If VLC is closed and Videos is restarted, the sound now plays through
the previously selected HDMI item and can be switched between the
monitor and the laptop's speakers.

What I regard as a bug is the failure of the HDMI option to appear in
the Play sound through listing as soon as an HDMI monitor is plugged
into the Display Port output. Obviously, VLC has the means to add this
item but the Videos app does not seem to be able to do this by itself.

In contrast, as soon as a previously paired set of Bluetooth headphone
are turned on, the Headset does appear as a menu item in the listing. I
would reasonably expect the plugging in of an HDMI monitor into the
Display Port to automatically add this item as well as its affects on
the Screen Display pane of Systems Settings.

Note: the laptop is running Ubuntu 14.10 and the Linux kernel has
recently been upgraded to v3.18 (Vivid).

[Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
Note:

If, when playing a video through Videos, the monitor is unplugged, the
HDMI option disappears from the Play sound through listing.

When another HDMI device (such as a TV set with HDMI inputs) is plugged
into the Display Port, the HDMI option reappears in the Play sound
through listing. Sound output can be switched between the options by
highlighting the chosen output. This happens without interrupting the
video playback through the Videos app. However, the Screen Display might
need reconfiguring but that is not the subject of this bug report,
except to note that the Screen Display appears to behave as expected
whilst the Sound does not.

[Bug 1319146] Re: new installation of 14.04LTS, no panel or launcher

2014-12-15 Thread ealthuis
I logged in to Unity, as admin, and tried tty, There is no response to
the keyboard, thi=us I did not get c command line.

I did log in under Gnome, executed the command as suggested, I have a
whole list of installation in Terminal , do you want to see that? I
saved it for the next post

Result:
I logged into Unity as admin, no Unity, no response to either mouse clicks, no
response to keyboard entry
I shut down, by holding the start button
I logged in under Gnome, everything is available and works
Iterminated Gnome and restarted
Logged in as user, Unity is there and everything works.

I tend to agree that there is a problem with configuration, The disk
activity at startup suggests that Unity is being loaded, it justdsoes
not show on the monitor. In fact the screenis completely mute, as I
said no response at all.

[Bug 1401434] Re: Desktop is distorted after update to 331.113

2014-12-15 Thread Tantibus Vulgaris
BIOS was upgraded:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
8BET62WW (1.42 )
07/26/2013

However, that did not change anything. With 331.113 the same problem
exists.

I have also made tests with docking station and two external displays.
The results:

1. LightDM login screen is OK
2. Dual monitors from docking station with laptop screen turned off: OK
3. Three monitors from docking station with laptop screen turned on: FAIL
Laptop screen is turned on, but is black. Cursor can be seen on it, i.e. mouse
can move to laptop screen, but windows cannot be dragged and icons (i.e. X
desktop begins at) are on second display. Screenshot is also attached.
4. Reverted to 331.38: three monitor setup is OK.

Attachments will follow.

[Bug 1395661] Re: Qt Webkit fails to build against Qt 5.4.0 on amd64 and powerpc

2014-12-15 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Summary changed:

- Qt Webkit fails to build against Qt 5.4.0 on amd64
+ Qt Webkit fails to build against Qt 5.4.0 on amd64 and powerpc

** Description changed:

There's a problem with Qt WebKit (5.4.0 beta) failing to build against
  Qt 5.4.0 beta on amd64: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/190809157
  /buildlog_ubuntu-vivid-amd64.qtwebkit-opensource-src_5.4.0~beta-
- 0ubuntu1~vivid1~test1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz
+ 0ubuntu1~vivid1~test1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz and on powerpc:
+ service/+archive/ubuntu/landing-005/+build/6649444/+files
+ /buildlog_ubuntu-vivid-powerpc.qtwebkit-opensource-
+ src_5.4.0-0ubuntu1%7Evivid1%7Etest2_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

It seems to be related to pre-compiled headers. Qttools requires
qtwebkit for the documentation. In the test PPA I've disabled qttools'
qtwebkit requirement in order to have more amd64 builds done in general.

[Bug 1402676] [NEW] Installing Ubuntu 14.04.1 on a brand new self-built system installer crashes after failing to install GRUB to /target/

2014-12-15 Thread Nate Olander
Public bug reported:

I recently built a desktop from scratch for the first time. Part-list is
available here: pcpartpicker.com/user/RPiAwesomeness/saved/q3Mypg

I downloaded the Ubuntu 14.04.1 AMD64 ISO and put it on a 4GB USB stick
using unetbootin on my current system, and Ubuntu 14.10 laptop. I then
booted up the LiveUSB and selected Try Ubuntu before Installing. From
there, I opened up the installer and proceeded through all of the steps,
up until the point where it says that it is installing GRUB.

After that, it gave me this error message:
http://i.stack.imgur.com/Lahbp.png

 and then this one:
http://i.stack.imgur.com/35x5a.png

The installer and that second window both freeze and neither of the
close buttons on the second window worked, I had to quit it via the
Unity dash (right-click, Quit). This launched apport and brought me
here.

This has happened two times in a row now, so I'm not sure if it's the
ISO or a server-side issue or something with my system.

[Bug 1398595] Re: Working printer device communication error (5012)

2014-12-15 Thread Till Kamppeter
Your problem can also be a hardware defect on the computer side. Did you
test the printer(s) on other computers running Ubuntu? Do you also have
problems with other USB devices? If your computer dual-boots to Windows,
does the problem occur there, too?

As a workaround, you can at least make the printing (not the scanning
and/or fax) functionality working by using the printer as a network
printer. If it does not have a network interface, connect it to the USB
port of your router or NAS and then it should appear as a network
printer with the IP/host name of your router or NAS (in some cases you
need to activate print server functionality via the web interface of
your router or NAS). Does this work for you?

[Bug 1397689] Re: Lenovo onelink pro dock (USB3) - second screen not configurable

2014-12-15 Thread Ray-Ven
It looks like v3.16.7-utopic (30-Oct-2014 18:15) is the last NOT working
Kernel.
v3.17-rc1-utopic (02-Sep-2014 18:51) works fine.
But I think you need me to do
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#Reverse_commit_bisecting_upstream_kernel_versions
right?
Will look into that asap

2014-12-15 Thread Phillip Susi
You are apparently trying to reuse an existing filesystem that is
damaged. You should have the installer format the disk fresh, or if you
want to keep the existing filesystem, you will need to fsck it to repair
the damage first.

[Bug 1380084] Re: SSH client requires SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 will not work without it, can't use key auth without SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0

2014-12-15 Thread reetp
Although the fix above works for ssh I cannot connect with filezilla and
get the following error:

Pageant failed to answer challenge

So I removed SSL_AUTH_SOCK from .bashrc and could then connect again
with filezilla, but not ssh.

After a look around I can connect with ssh using the following format :

ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no user@host.domain

This also works for scp. However, it is a pain in the butt.

If you use keys it circumvents the issue. However, not every machine I
connect to and from has keys.

As per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+bug/1380084/comments/12
I am surprised that this does not affect more people

[Bug 1402350] Re: Powering on the printer does not activate the related usb port

2014-12-15 Thread dino99
@Till

some more tests:
- the pc was already running, but the printer's usb cord was unplugged. So i
plug it again, then set the printer 'on' via its on/off switch button. Start a
printing job: done as expected.

- then let the printer plugged (usb cord) but the printer powerded down (on/off
printer button)
- wait about 15 mn without printing
- then powered on the printer and try to print something again to test the
previous 'usb port not awaken' issue reported here. The printing job have been
done as expected.

To conclude about that report: the apparmor 'enforce' status seems the
only one to be blamed, as the 'complain' status set let the usb port
active. The 'hplip' report (lp:241781) seems also refer to the same
apparmor config issue. Note that i've declared a false positive about
the missing job inside the queue; sorry about that.

[Bug 1402666] Re: [XPS13 9333, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Playback problem

2014-12-15 Thread David Chatterton
When the output is directed to an external HDMI monitor and the lead
into the Display Port is unplugged, the HDMI option disappears from the
Sound Output menu leaving just the Speakers highlighted. However,
there is no sound from the Speakers until the highlighted menu item is
clicked with the trackpad pointer. This does not change the
highlighting but does switch the sound back to the speakers.

Plugging the HDMI monitor back in via the Display Port does cause the
HDMI menu item to re-appear in the Play sound through listing but, to
switch the sound back to the HDMI, the menu item does need to be clicked
to highlight it.

[Bug 1402706] [NEW] More explicit wording needed for HWE updates

2014-12-15 Thread Dariusz Gadomski
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

In Precise after new HWE kernel was released the following message was
displayed to the user:
New hardware support is available [Install].

This is perfectly correct, but I have received some complaints from
sysadmins that this is a little bit misleading to end users.

The current approach leaves users with false sense of support and
security - since they will not receive any (includnig *security*) kernel
patches despite the fact that they have installed a LTS release.

In their opinion it should be emphasized that a new HWE kernel is
required to prolong the LTS-nature of the installed system (since most
of the HWE kernels will have up to a couple months of support).

So, if the current kernel is close to EOL and new HWE kernel is
available the message should clearly recommend upgrading the kernel to
maintain full system support.

[Bug 1402708] [NEW] Empty photos saved

2014-12-15 Thread Pat McGowan
Public bug reported:

Mako build 140

I took several photos in near succession, then the camera started saving
empty (1 byte photos). A couple hours later it also did not save new
photos properly.

The photo roll shows the ubuntu spinny forever trying to display the
four bad ones. Gallery does not attempt to display anything for them.

After a reboot the camera is working.
