[Bug 1584214] [NEW] Error about upstart/systemd when runit
Public bug reported: You run Ubuntu 16.04 which has both `upstart` and `systemd` as installed. The `runit` package tries to find out which your system is using, but probably gets confused because two are installed and it picks the wrong one. It can be caused by the idea of "init-system neutrality", expressed under van Smoorenburg `init`, `upstart` and `systemd`. Logs about `sudo apt-get install git-all` Setting up runit (2.1.2-3ubuntu1) ... start: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused dpkg: error processing package runit (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of git-daemon-run: git-daemon-run depends on runit; however: Package runit is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing package git-daemon-run (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure. Errors were encountered while processing: runit git-daemon-run E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) %%% logs end %%% The upstart's start command fails to work. The post-installation maintainer script for runit tries to detect the presence of upstart and start the `runsvdir` upstart job if upstart is present. It does the same with systemd and `runit.servide`. A thread about the issue here http://unix.stackexchange.com/q/284249/16920 There is a beginning of the solution but no complete resolution. [Bug 1584162] Re: cannot mount cd-r ubuntu 16.04
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1584162/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock
In my particular case, I have 2 different monitors. One is on my laptop (with Intel Integrated Graphics), the other is my HP monitor, connected with HDMI. I've noticed when I remove the hdmi port, my current workspace switches window positions, so that what's on screen 1, moves to 2, and 2 to 1. On every other screen, it usually moves to the connected monitor when put it back, regardless of it's individual state. In 15.04, if my computer suspended (which is usually the case here), they'd hold their state and return when the other monitor woke. [Bug 1582852] Re: IMA crashes while verifying signatures
Hi Joseph, thanks for building the kernel. We discovered the problem as part of testing IMA. We built the kernel with these 2 patches applied and one other patch applied for which now a bug has also been filed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1584195 The issue is, I cannot test the code path without that other patch applied because that one provides the facilities for injecting a key into the kernel image, which is a prerequisite for using IMA with the .ima keyring, which in turn allows us to exercise the fixed code path. [Bug 1574079] Re: USB audio device is not recognized after startup in 16.04
I have reinstalled Ubuntu 16.04 afresh today and after a complete update this is still an issue with my Cambridge Audio USB soundcard. Removing fwupd did do the trick this time. However if I was new to Linux this wouldn't give a good first impression and indeed could have been a deal breaker. [Bug 1557248] Re: OpenLDAP: Backport a fix for use-after-free in GnuTLS-related code
I can confirm that the following packages from xenial-proposed fix the bug: slapd 2.4.42+dfsg-2ubuntu3.1 libldap-2.4-2 2.4.42+dfsg-2ubuntu3.1 ldap-utils 2.4.42+dfsg-2ubuntu3.1 I did not test the packages in wily-proposed. Setting the test environment is not trivial, and I don't think it is worthwhile to make this effort for the release that goes out of support in two months, and has been already superseded by a LTS release. I apologize for a delay in replying to the verification request. This was caused by an unpleasant surprise encountered while testing the new packages. I attempted to recreate the test environment to mimic the setup in which I originally encountered this bug, but I did so slightly differently - and discovered another OpenLDAP bug that had basically the same symptoms. It was not immediately clear whether this situation was some unfixed edge case of the bug reported here, or if it was an entirely separate bug. Further analysis showed that it was the latter, the root cause is entirely different and similarities are coincidental. For reference, report for the new bug can be found at http://www.openldap.org/its/index.cgi?findid=8427 Testing methodology and environment: Tests were done with both fixed and unfixed versions of affected packages, i.e. 2.4.42+dfsg-2ubuntu3 and 2.4.42+dfsg-2ubuntu3.1. Note that symptoms of this bug are intermittent, and several iterations may be needed for them to surface. 1. Configure two LDAP servers in dual master replication setup using slapd.conf config file as shown below. 2. Provide the servers with TLS certificates that are correct but use 1024-bit public key. (Note: SECURE256 requires 4096-bit RSA key) 3. Set tls_reqcert to allow in slapd.conf. 4. Start slapd on both servers. 5. Stop and restart slapd on server A. 6. Server B will write errors to syslog: slapd: do_syncrep2: rid=001 (-1) Can't contact LDAP server slapd: do_syncrepl: rid=001 rc -1 retrying (9 retries left) Result when using fixed packages: After predefined time server B will retry replication, and we won't see any further error messages. Result when using unfixed packages: Server B produces the following messages in a loop: slapd: do_syncrepl: rid=001 rc -1 retrying (8 retries left) slapd: slap_client_connect: URI=ldaps://10.0.0.1 DN="cn=root,dc=test" ldap_sasl_bind_s failed (-1) The relevant parts of slapd.conf: (for server A at 10.0.0.1) loglevel1 serverID001 moduleload syncprov TLSCipherSuite SECURE256:-VERS-SSL3.0 TLSCACertificateFile/etc/ldap/ssl/ca.pem TLSCertificateFile /etc/ldap/ssl/srvA.pem TLSCertificateKeyFile /etc/ldap/ssl/srvA.key syncrepl rid=001 provider=ldaps://10.0.0.2 type=refreshAndPersist retry="30 10 300 +" searchbase="dc=test" attrs="*,+" bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=root,dc=test" credentials="plaintext-password" tls_reqcert=allow keepalive="240:5:10" mirrormode TRUE overlay syncprov syncprov-checkpoint 10 1440 ** Tags removed: verification-needed ** Tags added: verification-done -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1557248 Title: OpenLDAP: Backport a fix for use-after-free in GnuTLS-related code To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/1557248/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1584147] Re: cloud-init hangs on boot as Python waits for sufficient randomness to start
for some reference, i booted a vm with a modified cloud-init- local.service and an additional file /usr/bin/python-import-logger . see below for those files. The first line in the file below is the 'cp /proc/uptime' that runs before the python program (meant to show the uptime before python starts at all). The thing to note is that PYTHONHASHSEED does improve immediate startup, but 'import random' basically causes a huge delay even if it is set. The reason to point that out is that cloud-init uses tempfile and tempfile imports random. after boot, catting /run/python-logger.log shows: 4.74 1.23 [4.84] start sys [4.84] end sys (0.00) [4.84] start random [31.20] end random (26.36) [31.20] start os [31.20] end os (0.00) [31.20] start tempfile [31.22] end tempfile (0.02) That was with args: /usr/bin/python-import-logger PYTHONHASHSEED=0 and 4.68 1.23 [27.13] start sys [27.13] end sys (0.00) [27.13] start random [27.16] end random (0.03) [27.16] start os [27.16] end os (0.00) [27.16] start tempfile [27.18] end tempfile (0.02) That was with args: /usr/bin/python-import-logger PYTHONHASHSEED=none-set $ cat /lib/systemd/system/cloud-init-local.service [Unit] Description=Initial cloud-init job (pre-networking) DefaultDependencies=no Wants=local-fs.target Wants=network-pre.target After=local-fs.target Conflicts=shutdown.target Before=network-pre.target Before=shutdown.target [Service] Type=oneshot #Environment=PYTHONHASHSEED=0 ExecStart=/bin/cp /proc/uptime /run/python-logger.log ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/python-import-logger ExecStart=/usr/bin/cloud-init init --local ExecStart=/bin/touch /run/cloud-init/network-config-ready RemainAfterExit=yes TimeoutSec=0 # Output needs to appear in instance console output StandardOutput=journal+console [Install] WantedBy=cloud-init.target $ cat /usr/bin/python-import-logger #!/usr/bin/python3 LOG="/run/python-logger.log" MODS=("sys", "random", "os", "tempfile") start_fmt = "[%3.2f] start %s" end_fmt = "[%3.2f] end %s (%2.2f)" def read_up(): with open("/proc/uptime", "r") as ufp: return float(ufp.read().partition(" ")[0]) def msg(comment, fp=None): if fp: fp.write(comment + "\n") print(comment) with open(LOG, "a") as fp: s = read_up() msg(start_fmt % (s, "baseline")) e = read_up() msg(end_fmt % (e, "baseline", e - s)) for name in MODS: s = read_up() msg(start_fmt % (read_up(), name), fp) __import__(name) e = read_up() msg(end_fmt % (e, name, e - s), fp) import sys import os msg("That was with args: %s" % ' '.join(sys.argv), fp) msg(" PYTHONHASHSEED=%s" % os.environ.get("PYTHONHASHSEED", "none-set"), fp) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1584147 Title: cloud-init hangs on boot as Python waits for sufficient randomness to start To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1584147/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1584069] Re: change_profile rules need a modifier to allow non-secureexec transitions
** Description changed: As it stands today, all exec transitions triggered by a change_profile rule cause the AT_SECURE flag in the auxiliary vector to be set due to the kernel function apparmor_bprm_secureexec() returning 1 while setting up the execution environment. This causes libc to always scrub the environment variables during such an exec transition. There should be a way to indicate, in the policy language, that AT_SECURE should not be triggered. This would be equivalent to the file rule type having the Px permission to trigger AT_SECURE and the px permission to not trigger it. The file rule type even has an 'unsafe' modifier keyword that could be reused as the change_profile modifier keyword. Steps to show that AT_SECURE is being set: # Build a test program to dump the AT_SECURE flag $ cat < print_at_secure.c - > #include - > #include - > - > int main(void) - > { - > printf("AT_SECURE = %lu\n", getauxval(AT_SECURE)); - > return 0; - > } - > EOF + #include + #include + + int main(void) + { + printf("AT_SECURE = %lu\n", getauxval(AT_SECURE)); + return 0; + } + EOF $ gcc -o print_at_secure print_at_secure.c # Load the test profile that allows all file accesses and any change_profile operations $ echo "profile test { file, change_profile, }" | sudo apparmor_parser -qr # Run bash under the test profile $ aa-exec -p test -- bash # Show the AT_SECURE is not set on exec - $ ./print_at_secure + $ ./print_at_secure AT_SECURE = 0 # Set up an exec transition (change_profile from the test profile back to the test profile) $ echo "exec test" > /proc/self/attr/exec # See that AT_SECURE is now set on exec - $ ./print_at_secure + $ ./print_at_secure AT_SECURE = 1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1584069 Title: change_profile rules need a modifier to allow non-secureexec transitions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/apparmor/+bug/1584069/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
