this broken by gtk 3.20.

It's worth noting that this is unlikely to be a problem with Juju 2.0 as
we no longer have all the agents in each environment logging to
rsyslogd. Juju agent logs are now sent to the controller machines over
the Juju API and are stored in MongoDB.

This is really just a Juju 1.25 issue. Retargetting...

I don't see anything obvious in those logs and I can't reproduce...

You could try updating your ALSA drivers, as descirbed here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingALSA/DKMS

This could very well make a difference since xenial is 4 major kernel
versions behind, and the problem may very well fixed in newer ALSA
driver code.

I think this is because the modesetting X driver is missing DRI2 page
flip support, which just got added to xserver git master.

Yakkety xserver is patched to use modesetting instead of intel, so in
order to use intel you need an xorg.conf.

After installing the kernel in -proposed, ibmebus based onboard Ethernet
finally works now. I had to manually run dhclient, however once I did

Mea culpa. I think I had 2 different (albeit similar) bug reports open
in different tabs and posted to the wrong one. FWIW, the proximate cause
of my problem was simple: ~/.Xauthority was owned root:root. That seems
to me to be an installer bug.

issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream 
kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? 
Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the 
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was 
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't 
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue 
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. 
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version 
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please 
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil 
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:

I should have  mentioned that the system shows a lot of large print
output in tty 7 as the system is booting and hangs at "started update
UTMP about system runlevel changes." When I look in tty1 there is
screenful of stuff and then a prompt, looking as if it had successfully
booted. I can log in there and all is normal except only root can start
x.

I should note that this is marked as Fix Released in debian, but from
the debian bug comments it just looks like Chris asked for that bug to
be closed as a configuration issue (which this is not).

This is actually only a VLAN issue with higher-than-default mtu.  The
bond does not have anything to do with the problem.  The problem is the
vlan package (required for ifupdown vlan support) installs a udev rule
that triggers for each new interface; it checks the ifupdown
configuration, and creates any corresponding vlan interfaces.  The real
interface and all its vlan interfaces then race to finish udev
processing and notify upstart, which then calls ifup directly on each
interface.  If upstart calls ifup for the vlan before the actual
interface (and the vlan has a high mtu), it will fail while being
brought up.

I think this can be fixed in a similar way to bug 1609367, where the
problem is higher-than-default mtu on ipv6 (i.e. inet6 section);
although in an easier way, since ifupdown already requires the 'vlan'
package for vlan support, and that package provides an if-pre-up script
already.

If we edit the /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/vlan script (from the vlan
package) like below (for trusty, similar patch for x and y), it will
increase the raw device's mtu if needed.

Me too. Fresh install of 16.04 from the mini.iso. Used apt-get to
install xorg, openbox and some applications. This always used to work.
Now only root can start x. This is bare metal, not virtual. I tried
installing first xserver-xorg-video-all and then xserver-xorg-legacy.
Neither made any difference. This is a Samsung rv515 "laptop" (I'd say
notebook). I can't understand why this is marked low priority.

Good News!  The issue was a card issue that was resolved working with EVGA. 
Today I re-imaged again with a clean 16.04.01 Kubuntu, dist-update, then added 
the PPA and installed the nvidia-367 package from the PPA.  1060 works 
correctly!
I can also vouch for the 1070 working with the same PPA & driver as well.

  (1)The way to repeat this bug
  It is easy to repeat this bug , run “/bin/kill -15 -12345”  or any like 
“/bin/kill -15 -1”  in ubuntu16.04  , it will kill all the process .
  
  (2)Cause analysis
  The code of /bin/kill in ubuntu16.04 come from procps-3.3.10 ,  when I run 
“/bin/kill -15 -1” , it actually send signal 15 to -1 ,
  
  -1 mean it will kill all the process .
  
  (3)The bug in procps-3.3.10/skill.c ,I think the code "pid = (long)('0'
  - optopt) " is not right .

  (4) the cause
-  sometimes when the resource is tight or a hadoop container lost connection 
in sometime, the nodemanager will kill this container , it send a signal this 
jvm process ,it is a normal behavior for hadoop for hadoop could reexcute this 
task. but with kill bug ,it kill all the process belong to a hadoop user .

-  I  copy /bin/kill in ubuntu14.04 to override /bin/kill in ubuntu16.04, it is 
ok in this way   .
