[Bug 1585863] Re: WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan required to fix it.

2016-11-17 Thread Hans Deragon
And coming back to my workaround script
NetworkManagerRestartWorkaroundForBug1380480.sh, I tried the more
friendly '(sleep 3;sudo wpa_cli scan)' solution, but it dit not always
work. The only solution I found to have networking working reliably
after resume is to have NetworkManager restarted.

[Bug 1562219] Re: Unprivileged xinit wont start in unallocated vt

2016-11-17 Thread Chris
I can confirm that #14 works for me also, however it doesn't provide me
with with the functionality that I require.

It would be useful to know whether this is intended behavior, or an
unintended bug.

Updated bug title to reflect comment #14, and added a paragraph to the
top of the bug description outlining the issue as it is currently
understood.

** Description changed:

+ If as an unprivileged user you launch xinit (or startx) to any vt (EVEN
+ IF UNALLOCATED BY SYSTEMD) it will fail as described below. The only
+ exception appears to be if the vt you attempt to launch X onto is
+ already logged into by that user. For many this makes running X
+ unprivileged unworkable.
+
+ --
+
  When attempting to run xinit or startx after upgrading from 14.04 to
  16.04 it will not work. There seems to be some sort of permission
  issue. I have seen another person with this issue as well here:

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/749370/ubuntu-16-04-xf86openconsole-
  cannot-open-virtual-console-2?newreg=ba376d7a182d44608ed4675346b1ed74

  An example is when attempting to launch kodi, which worked prior to the
  upgrade:

  xinit /usr/bin/kodi --standalone -- -nocursor :0

2016-11-17 Thread Gerry Boland
Unity8 is overriding the client-requested window size in phone/tablet
mode, but this shouldn't be happening for desktop mode.

We also need to save the client-requested window geometry in case shell
later wishes to apply that.

Agreed I'd like a specific example

Well, as I said before I added tests based on your case and so far was
unable to trigger it on any of the base Distribution releases nor T+Mitaka.
So until anything/anybody is able to trigger it - given the huge delta for
base Trusty I'd keep the Trusty task as incomplete.

[Bug 1562219] Re: xinit will not work as non-root.

2016-11-17 Thread Chris
I've tried for an hour, but can't seem to get any fix working. Highly
frustrating as I just switched my laptop from Debian to Ubuntu, and now
I have to spend time switching it back again.

Comment #16 seems to misunderstand the bug. Likewise the workaround in
comment #12 might possibly work for some people, but there appear to be
several of us who rely on running X as a non-root user.

This is not something that I would have expected to be broken. Is there
any update on this? It's been a while since anyone commented on it, and
the bug doesn't appear to be assigned to anyone.

[Bug 1642611] [NEW] Won't play music inside unity8 snap because of unknown application ID

2016-11-17 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

In the unity8 snap I've been working on, I tried to play music from
unity8-dash. And it doesn't do anything. Media Hub gives an error
about "Invalid profile name". Seemingly from the code in
apparmor/ubuntu.cpp:

MH_DEBUG("apparmor profile name: %s", name);
MH_DEBUG("is_unconfined(): %s", (is_unconfined() ? "true" : "false"));
MH_DEBUG("has_package_name(): %s", (has_package_name() ? "true" : "false"));
if (not is_unconfined() and not is_unity() and not has_package_name())
throw std::logic_error
{
"apparmor::ubuntu::Context: Invalid profile name " + str()
};

For the unity8 snap, I see:

[DD 2016-11-16 20:54:00.782937] [ubuntu.cpp:111@Context] apparmor profile name:

It seems like media-hub is not prepared for this new snappy world.

(Also, and separately, media-hub doesn't have a non-android video
backend?  I assume that's a known issue and/or there's a bug for that
already.)

btw, merely restarting Network Manager never worked for me. I have to

We used to have this. I'm sure, a decade ago, I could actually tell
whatever was managing the hibernate/suspend, in the gui, to remove certain
kernel modules on suspend and load them on resume. Now we're right back to
needing it.

[Bug 1542029] Re: New windows have incorrect dimensions on launch (not the dimensions the app specifies)

2016-11-17 Thread Alan Griffiths
Can we have a specific example of the bug?

The size of the window requested is a hint to the window manager, not a
requirement. The requested size may legitimately be overridden (e.g. for
layout reasons).

I.e. There is no guarantee that size created matches the requested size.

Could you please advise?

[Bug 1585863] Re: WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan required to fix it.

2016-11-17 Thread Hans Deragon
This serious issue is dragging to long. People want computers that
"just work". If pinpointing the source of the problem is difficult and
few resources are available, why not package a workaround that restarts
NetworkManager upon resume?

Attached is my workaround. Works nicely. Finally, I have a computer
that "just works" and it's not a Mac (well, I have other issues but this
one is solved).

Simple move the script under /lib/systemd/system-sleep and ensure it is
executable.

2016-11-17 Thread Mirzet Kadic
The default config of /etc/default/arpon for DARPI is

DAEMON_OPTS="-d -q -f /var/log/arpon/arpon.log -g"

but it should be:

DAEMON_OPTS="-D -q -f /var/log/arpon/arpon.log -g"

-D instead -d

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
@Colin, That's what I understood previously, but thanks for confirming
it. The question was whether you had digged further to see whether that
warning made any sense, or whether you had any further data confirming
the leak to be real. I'll take your response as a no, which is fine.

[Bug 1642600] [NEW] PC freeze when turning off screen

2016-11-17 Thread Thomas A. F. Thorne
Public bug reported:

I have an ubuntu 16.04 PC which was recently upgraded from 10.something
to 12.04 and then to 16.04 (I think that is how it went, it was a two
day thing with me checking on it now and again to say yes. Now that it
is running on 16.04 I have noticed that when I left the PC for a while
it locked up. The display was off, the power light on the tower solidly
on and the keyboard unresponsive. The Num Lock light was lit but would
not respond to key presses, nor would the Caps Lock or Scroll Lock
lights. No key presses or short press of a power light would change the
system state. The only thing I could do while sat at the PC was hold
the power button in to force a power off.

When the PC was powered back on everything seemed to be OK.

I thought it might be a problem with suspending the PC. I was able to
do that manually though. The display went off, the tower fans went
quiet and the power light started to blink. Pressing keyboard keys did
nothing but a short press of the power button brought the system back
online. The only problem being that the Wi-Fi was lost until I
restarted the system, not ideal but better than frozen.

I attempted to disable the automatic suspend option from the Settings
menu but the system still ended up in the frozen state. Next to
completely disable suspend by creating a
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.disable-suspend.pkla
file as suggested at http://askubuntu.com/questions/452908/how-to-
disable-suspend-in-14-04 but the system still ended up frozen.

That leaves me to think it was the act of going into the Monitor
Disabled state which caused the issue. So I started to report an
ubuntu-bug and here I am typing out this description of what I remember
doing.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

Memory 2.0 GiB
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4400 @ 2.00 GHz x 2
Graphics Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV515
OS type 64-bit
Disk 96.6 GB

If there are any further diagnostic steps I can take please let me know.
This is a personal machine so I can do most things to it. I am a c/c++
software engineer by trade so although I am not great with the GNU
Debugger I can do most things with a bit of instruction. I do not do
much Ubuntu or Kernel work so links to getting started guides for how to
do anything more specific that git clone or make would be appreciated.

[Bug 1642598] [NEW] Nemo memory leak

2016-11-17 Thread John Bester
Public bug reported:

Nemo either has a memory leak or very bad memory management. Ubuntu
16.04 comes to a grinding halt on a PC with Nemo installed. This
happened a number of times the last week (since nemo was installed
because of its ability to have dual panes). The PC is switched off every
night and some time during the day it becomes slower and slower until it
comes to a grinding halt. This last time I was informed and was able to
SSH in before the system completely died. Memory consumption was 100%
and I had to kill some other app in order to open top. Nemo used 3.2GB
at the time and after killing it, the system became responsive again.

Additional information that may be helpful: A smb share is used to
access all company data from a central server. I have read about memory
issues in Nemo and one person seems to think it is a thumbnail issue.

[Bug 1642600] Re: PC freeze when turning off screen

2016-11-17 Thread Thomas A. F. Thorne
I probably should have put that I have not seen the issue since setting
the turn off screen option to never. It has only been a couple of hours
since I did that but it is better than before when it would fail within
the ~30 minutes that setting was at before.

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread John Lenton
I've put a branch up that drops a few things so that building snapd
without cgo is possible. Could you take it from
https://github.com/chipaca/snappy/tree/no-c and either build it, and
repeat the memory tests?

You can either build it entirely by hand setting CGO_ENABLED=0 to force
it to build a static binary, or build it normally (using dpkg-
buildpackage) and then force the resolver to use the pure go one with
GODEBUG=netdns=go

Thanks!

[Bug 1642529] Re: Can't run x apps in latest rc image

2016-11-17 Thread Christopher Townsend
Most definitely not an issue in Puritine itself, so marking that
invalid.

Looking at the log, it seems an older version of libertine is in this
image. Could you provide the output of 'apt-cache policy libertine-
tools'?

The version of libertine in vivid overlay is
1.4.2+15.04.20161005-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread Colin Ian King
@gustavo, I was just reporting some incidental data that I observed with
valgrind as I thought it may be pertinent. It is just an observation
that made me dig a bit deeper as it didn't explain the larger heap
allocations. I just wanted to be thorough and report my findings as it
may be useful if it's a leak issue that could affect other threaded Go
applications.

[Bug 1642582] [NEW] mtx package version 1.3.12-9 installation fails with duplicate bash-completion via apt-get

2016-11-17 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Summary
===

We were unable to install the 'mtx' package for control of tape autochangers
via 'apt-get install mtx'

Details
===
We wanted to install both the mt-st and mtx packages for s390 tape support.
We encountered a problem in the mtx_1.3.12-9_s390x.deb package which was
downloaded to /var/cache/apt/archives/ location but installation was not
performed due to duplicate bash completion data being delivered.
See the console output section below for results and more details about the
error itself.
We expect the mtx package to install smoothly with apt-get install mtx.

We worked around with:
~~
