[Bug 1654271] [NEW] host machine freezes

2017-01-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When trying to install Radeon crimson relive 16.12.1, each host machine freezes
at the machine environment check stage.
Even if you launch the installer in an environment where GPU is not installed,
each host machine freezes in the same way.
When Gusest's CPU is changed from 4 to 1, the environment check is completed
normally.
Even if FMA and AVX 2 are invalidated by CPU setting, environment check will be
completed normally.
Since 1 CPU does not freeze, I thought that it would be better to fix the CPU,
but I will still freeze.
Is it impossible to enable the function of AVX 2 (FMA?) In the virtual machine
on KVM?

[Bug 1639180] Re: no login possible after update to nvidia 304.132

2017-01-12 Thread Paul Eggert
> @eggert-cs, have you tried the "ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa" PPA?

No, sorry, I just followed the recipe in #20 to downgrade from 304.132
to 304.131, plus the file /etc/apt/preferences.d/local-nvidia-quirks as
described in #18 to make sure 304.132 is not reinstalled as part of an
upgrade. This desktop is being used by others for their daily work, so
I'm conservative about making changes to it. Is there a reliable recipe
for trying out ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa for a little bit and then
reverting to what I have now?

[Bug 1655059] Re: ifup@.service doesn't work with interface names containing a dash

2017-01-12 Thread Frederik Slos
I looked into a fix for this:
The problem is in
/lib/systemd/system/ifup@.service

looking at 'Table 9.14. Important Unit Specifiers' on
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/System_Administrators_Guide/sect-Managing_Services_with_systemd-Unit_Files.html

the change to be made is changing all instances of %I to %i

That fixes it for us anyway.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1641328 ***

Use the re-ordering of hosts line in nsswitch.conf posted by Mark Tearle in
#1641328:
   files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns

This is better than removing "resolve [!UNAVAIL=return]" because recent Ubuntu
releases should continue to use systemd-resolved for name resolution. It's man
page explains several benefits, see:
 https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd-resolved.service.html

Thank you so much for the explanation, that confirmed all that I saw.
Yet I wonder since newer libvirt works (see my experiments before) they
seem to have fixed that "a different way".
I'd pretty much prefer to fix it by backporting that if applicable.

Do you, based on your work on this, happen to know what the (maybe more
complex) upstream fix for this was?

[Bug 1656155] Re: System (keyboard & touchpad) freezes

2017-01-12 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1656155/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1638990] Re: nvidia-367 with kernel 4.4.0-45-generic won't boot

2017-01-12 Thread Travisgevans
I got hit by this too a while back. I don't expect a simple system
upgrade to break my system. I ended up having to continue using an out-
of-date kernel for some time as a result.

It's still not fixed with nvidia-367 and 4.4.0-59-generic. But manually
editing /etc/default/grub and removing "splash" from the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT options, followed by executing update-grub2,
does allow my system to boot with 4.4.0-59 (I didn't have to use
"nomodeset"). I consider myself lucky.

If this really affects *everyone* who simply uses the official Nvidia
drivers, then I'm tempted to feel that these updates are not being
tested adequately before release. I really hope that this testing will
improve once this gets fixed, because things like this encourage users
to leave their systems out of date and possibly risk security issues
just to ensure that they at least *work*. It certainly doesn't encourage
*me* to update my system very often (and I'm bad enough about that as it
is).

[Bug 1511824] Re: Can't login as ordinary user with lightdm

2017-01-12 Thread Walt Mankowski
I figured out what my problem was, and since I haven't seen any
solutions anywhere else, hopefully this will be of some use to the next
person. In my case it turned out to be the Nvidia driver, which
installed its modules under /lib/modules/4.8.0-32-generic. When I
upgraded to 4.8.0-34, it couldn't find the drivers. See
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2349132 for more information.

Of course this doesn't explain why it was looking for pam_kwallet.so,
which I suspect is a separate issue.

I've been playing around but haven't managed to find a descriptor leak,
if someone else can reproduce this problem, please try the following
from a terminal:

$ ls -l /proc/$(pidof gnome-software)/fd

Mine consistently shows about 19 descriptors open, no matter what I do
(some temporarily open during actions, but they close quickly).

I'll keep looking and look for other causes.

[Bug 1298792] Re: Innocuous error prompt pops up when logging in after suspend and the battery runs out, or when battery is not present and power is unplugged

2017-01-12 Thread cmc302a
Maybe this is a little off-topic, maybe not... I have been able to
replicate the bug described by George Sofianos, related to the power
"shortage" when the system is in suspension, and the battery is removed,
or when there is no battery present and the mains get suddenly
disconnected. HOWEVER, this also happens at RANDOM whenever the system
is in suspension, and the system gets resumed. The real issue here, IMO;
is that something is wrong with the suspend/resume function, not really
with apport...

I wouldn't say it's INNOCUOUS. The whole environment you left in
suspension is LOST after this crash (thet's the whole point of the
suspend function in the first place, to let you keep working where you
left off...)

2017-01-12 Thread Guy Taylor
Public bug reported:

The Launchpad page for https://launchpad.net/sane-backends and
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends should have
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/bugtrackers/auto-alioth.debian.org
assigned to it as the official upstream bugtracker.

[Bug 1540706] Re: Canon DR-F120 - IO Errors

2017-01-12 Thread Guy Taylor
@penalvch This bug has been triaged and now fixed upstream by myself.
There is no more information needed to be collected. The fix will be
included in v1.0.26 of upstream, please see previous comments for
relevant links/details. I believe the status should be closer to "Fix
Committed" than "Incomplete" however I can not understand the Ubuntu
source system for https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends to
commit a patch myself.

[Bug 1656155] [NEW] System (keyboard & touchpad) freezes

2017-01-12 Thread Jeffry R. Fisher
Public bug reported:

I have a 1-month old Acer Aspire F5-573-58VX that came with Win-10
installed. It relies on its Intel i5-7200u for its graphics (HD 620). It
runs Win-10 with no problems (other than Win-10 itself), so I do not
suspect the hardware.

I succeeded in dual-booting Ubuntu 16.04 with EFI and secure-boot both
enabled, but was suffering random freezes at 3-30 minutes of use, even
after setting the c-state limit in grub. It hangs both with and without
Intel microcode. So I upgraded to 16.10 hoping that a newer kernel would
have a fix in it.

It's still freezing at random (many apps, and sometimes using only the
desktop controls). It still has the c-state parameter in grub.

It appears that if I leave the system untouched with the cursor in an
empty area, then no freeze will occur (I can see display changing) as
long as I don't touch anything. Bittorrent runs reliably overnight, and
then the machine can freeze within seconds of my moving the cursor to a
control in the morning.

Thunderbird is also suspicious: I can work most of an hour OK as long as
I never move the cursor over the scroll slider in the folder pane.
However, bringing the cursor close enough to change the slider's
appearance will usually freeze the machine. Update: I've now experienced
a freeze while the cursor was stationary and I was merely typing into an
email message window.

When it freezes, the machine goes quiet (it's not spinning). There's no
message to the GUI, only a sudden halt. When frozen, soft restart and
reboot (ctrl-alt-back & ctrl-alt-del) both fail. Only a forced power-off
has had any effect. (I'll try your alt+sysreq combos in my next freeze).

Synaptic says I have an intel driver update utility installed, but I
don't know if it has run. When I try to sudo it, I am told that the
command is not found. I have been unable to locate it in the file
system. If anyone knows where that goes (or where to hunt), that might
be helpful.

I do not (yet) know how to ssh into the sick machine to get kernel logs
or crash dumps. I'm a user-space programmer, not a sysadmin, so I have a
learning curve to open the firewall enough to allow an intrusion, and
more learning curves for the cryptic debugging tools.

There's one suspicious line in the boot log: "drm:parse_csr_fw
[i915_bpo]] ERROR Unknown stepping info, firmware loading failed". I
wonder if that's related to the driver for Intel chip's embedded
graphics.

My current work-around is to do as much work as possible in Win-10 :(

** Description changed:

The conclusion is that xorg versions above 1:12 fail to support legacy
driver 304. Therefore it should be reported in release notes for users

[Bug 1656123] Re: Dualshock 4 (ps4 controller) prevents Ubuntu from booting

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1656123/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
