[Bug 1555258] Re: Request contained command arguments

2017-05-01 Thread Eric Desrochers
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * Debian upstream maintainer decided to compile without
"-enable-command-args" as describe in debian/NEWS file. This decision have the
effect of ignoring the following directive : "dont_blame_nrpe=1" in nrpe.cfg by
not allowing command argument in the deamon.
+Debian disabled the option because there were concerns about security
problems and that this feature is often used wrong [0] but there are Ubuntu
users out there that know what they're doing and depend on this feature.
+
+ * The expectation is for Ubuntu to deviate from Debian upstream
+ decision to accomodate Ubuntu Nagios users.
+
+ [0] - Debian Bug:
+ https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=756479
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * This require a Nagios environment setup (Server and at least 1
+ client)
+
+ * Command example run at server side using "dont_blame_nrpe" set to either 0
(false) or 1 (true) in nrpe.cfg
+ $ sudo -unagios /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H x.x.x.x -p 5664 -c
check_procs -a rsyslogd 1 0
+ CHECK_NRPE: Received 0 bytes from daemon. Check the remote server logs for
error messages.
+
+ May  1 20:20:06 nonrotatable-niki nrpe[83523]: Connection from 10.189.69.52
port 43186
+ May  1 20:20:06 nonrotatable-niki nrpe[83523]: Host address is in
allowed_hosts
+ May  1 20:20:06 nonrotatable-niki nrpe[83523]: Handling the connection...
+ ==> May  1 20:20:06 nonrotatable-niki nrpe[83523]: Error: Request contained
command arguments!
+ ==> May  1 20:20:06 nonrotatable-niki nrpe[83523]: Client request was
invalid, bailing out..
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This update enables the command-args (at compile time) support in nrpe by
NOT ignoring option "dont_blame_nrpe=1" IFF set manually.
+Note that by default, the option is DISABLE in the configuration file
(nrpe.cfg) : "dont_blame_nrpe=0".
+
+ * For users using the default value "dont_blame_nrpe=0", so no behavioural
change. With regard to the risk, I would say it is LOW.
+The option is disable by default meaning that it doesn't introduce any
security risk for users that doesn't rely on this feature.
+But it doesn't prevent the risk that non-experimented users enable the
option without considering all the security risk aspects.
+
+ * For users choosing to manually enable this option, the risk is HIGHER, but
we assume that before enabling this option the users are considering the PROS
and CONS.
+
+ * Deviating from Debian upstream for that particular case will allow to
unblock experimented Ubuntu users (who know what they are doing) of nrpe to
make the choice for themselves whether to
+accept the security risks that the feature involve by manually enabling
command-args in nrpe.cfg or not.
+
+  * Canonical Security team feedbacks :
+
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nagios-nrpe/+bug/1555258/comments/9
+
+...
+If this feature is enabled in an SRU, the upload must include the fix for
CVE-2013-1362:
+...
+
+  * COMMAND ARGUMENTS
+NRPE 2.0 includes the ability for clients to supply arguments to commands
which should be run. Please note that this feature should be considered a
security risk, and you should only use it if you know what you're doing!

+ * CVE-2013-1362 :
+
https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nrpe/blob/master/SECURITY.md#command-arguments
+
+
+ [Original Description]
+
  Ubuntu 15.10 (upgraded from 12.04)

  Have tried a full purged removal of nagios-nrpe-server and reinstall
  however the "dont_blame_nrpe=1" setting in nrpe.cfg is still being
  ignored.

  /var/log/syslog reports:

  Mar 9 12:33:58 myhost nrpe[17153]: Error: Request contained command
arguments!
  Mar 9 12:33:58 myhost nrpe[17153]: Client request was invalid, bailing out...

  All checks of this box have stopped working since the upgrade and I
  would like to get to the bottom of why NRPE is not honoring my request
  to allow command arguments.

sudo alsa force-reload

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-utils

[Bug 1553441] Re: [Asus K55DR] When VGA plugged into laptop, only one monitor working at a time

2017-05-01 Thread lazanet
** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.11-rc7
** Tags added: artful kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.11-rc8

** Description changed:

  Upstream bug report: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99784
  Imgur post that explains problem: http://imgur.com/a/3kwiq

  When my ASUS VW193 external monitor is connected to the VGA port of my
  laptop (AMD Radeon 7470m) internal laptop monitor stops working. Using
  the Unity Control Center I'm able to set laptop monitor as primary which
  disables external monitor (and vice-versa). Tried manual switch to
- mainline Linux 4.5 kernel, same thing. Tested on 14.04, 15.10, 16.04
- with same results.
+ mainline Linux 4.5 kernel, same thing. Tested on 14.04, 15.10, 16.04,
+ 17.04 and 17.10 (develop branch) with same results.

  However, if I plug the Asus monitor into the laptop via VGA, plug my Vox
  TV into the laptop via HDMI, and set the resolution to 1280x720, it
  displays fine on both the monitor and TV.

  Also, the internal monitor and just HDMI together show properly.

  However, if I adjust to 1080i, the above working dual screen configurations
show a graphical glitch:
  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/302517159/IMG_20170114_225834.jpg

[Bug 1555258] Re: Request contained command arguments

2017-05-01 Thread Tyler Hicks
I feel like this would be acceptable, from a security standpoint, to
enable at build time. It would be disabled by default and upstream makes
it clear that it should only be enabled if you know what you're doing:

  https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nrpe/blob/master/SECURITY.md
#command-arguments

After reading bug reports and comments on social media, I have to assume
that there are users out there that know what they're doing and depend
on this feature.

If this feature is enabled in an SRU, the upload must include the fix
for CVE-2013-1362:

https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nrpe/commit/5bf9b2047f8e9a8609c3b95b2e655368765e4dd1

There's no need to take this change through the security pocket since
the current package is not vulnerable to CVE-2013-1362. It can take the
normal SRU route directly to the updates pocket.

** CVE added: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-
bin/cvename.cgi?name=2013-1362

[Bug 1644064] Re: sshd_config file permission changed to 644 if ssh_pwauth value is true or false

2017-05-01 Thread Chad Smith
** Description changed:

- In my deploy image, the default permission of sshd_config file is 600.
- It always be changed to 644 after cloud-init run. After debug, it is
- caused by cloud-config item:
+ === Begin SRU Template ===
+ [Impact]
+ Existing security permissions on /etc/ssh/sshd_config file are not honored.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ wget
https://git.launchpad.net/~smoser/cloud-init/+git/sru-info/plain/bin/lxc-proposed-snapshot
+ chmod 755 lxc-proposed-snapshot
+
+
+ # create config.yaml
+ cat config.yaml
+ #cloud-config
+ ssh_pwauth: true
+
+ name=proposed-test
+ for release in xenial yakkety zesty; do \
+  ref=$release-proposed;
+  lxc-proposed-snapshot --proposed --publish $release $ref;
+  lxc init $ref $name;
+  lxc start $name;
+  sleep 10;
+  lxc file pull $name/etc/ssh/sshd_config .;
+  chmod 600 sshd_config;
+  lxc file push sshd_config $name/etc/ssh/sshd_config;
+  lxc config set $name user.user-data - < config.yml;
+  lxc start;
+  sleep 10;
+  lxc exec $name ls -ltr /etc/ssh/sshd_config;  # should remain 600
+  lxc stop $name;
+  lxc delete $name;
+ done
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal as we are now honoring file permissions if an sshd_config file exists.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ === End SRU Template ===
+
+
+ In my deploy image, the default permission of sshd_config file is 600. It
always be changed to 644 after cloud-init run. After debug, it is caused by
cloud-config item:

  ssh_pwauth: true

  The related code is:

- lines = [str(l) for l in new_lines]
- util.write_file(ssh_util.DEF_SSHD_CFG, "\n".join(lines))
+ lines = [str(l) for l in new_lines]
+ util.write_file(ssh_util.DEF_SSHD_CFG, "\n".join(lines))
  of file cc_set_passwords.py.

  write_file function use default mask 644 to write sshd_config. So my
  file permission changed.

  It shall be enhanced to read old sshd_config permission and write new
  sshd_config with old permission to avoid security issue.

[Bug 1687512] [NEW] Kernel panics on Xenial when using cgroups and strict CFS limits

2017-05-01 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

We see a number of kernel panics on servers running Apache Mesos using
cgroups with small (0.1-0.2) cpu limits.

These all appear as NULL pointer dereferences in and around
pick_next_entity and pick_next_task_fair, for example:

[Bug 1687099] Re: package kismet (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 6

2017-05-01 Thread Nick Andrik
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1172993 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1172993

Hi KC,

If you see in the log there is this message:
' usermod: user 'kc' does not exist'
This means that there is no user with 'JMH' username.

Could you please specify a valid username when it requests for the users in the
kismet group?
An easy solution is to uninstall and install kismet again.

This issue has been fixed in the newest version of kismet.
It is a duplicate of a previously reported bug and I'm marking it as such.
Please comment here if you need additional help

Kindest regards,
Nick

I couldn't see the package in /var/apt/cache/archives (although it turns out it

and I told Synaptic to re-install, but with "Download package files only".
Synaptic shows that the size to be downloaded was "0 B", and apply does not

When I finally saw: "wine32_1.8.7-1ubuntu1_i386.deb", it was not 0B, but "171.4

[Bug 1687510] [NEW] way to remove "Default Application" defective or makes no sense

2017-05-01 Thread Stefan Helmert
Public bug reported:

related to Bug #1687486

In "properties" -> "Open With" dialogue the "Default Application" list
entry can't be removed. But this entry is replicated in the "Open With"
-> "Other application..." in "Related Applications" where it can be
removed. This is synced back to "properties" -> "Open With" where the
Default application is filled by shifting up the first "Related
Apllication". After opening this dialogue, the default application in
the first row of the right-click menu is updated.

[Bug 1679823] Re: bond0: Invalid MTU 9000 requested, hw max 1500 with kernel 4.10 (or 4.8.0-49)

2017-05-01 Thread Joseph Salisbury
After a review, Yakkety did get the following commits via other bug
reports:

d37117d ethernet: use net core MTU range checking in more drivers
6426a88 net: use core MTU range checking in virt drivers
89110d9 net: use core MTU range checking in virt drivers
e84f31d net: centralize net_device min/max MTU checking
fe5473b hv_netvsc: remove excessive logging on MTU change

This changed the MTU checking in some places and not all. I think commits
91572088e3f and 3331aa378e9b are needed.

I built a V2 Yakkety test kernel with these two commits. It can be
downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1679823/

Can folks affected by this bug give this kernel a test?

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1687506] [NEW] When first started, GIMP's Layer Dock was almost completely off screen to the right

2017-05-01 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

The following bug was reported at:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781803

I just installed the latest Lubuntu (17.04) and installed the latest standard
GIMP in my repositories (2.8.20-1).
The Layers/Channels/Paths/Undo/Brushes/Patterns/Gradients combined dock (
Whew! - is there a shorter name for this initially standard opening combo dock?)
was so far to the right on my screen that I had to snag it with Alt-Drag (see
screenshot).
I am using the proprietary NVidia 304 package (which I have been automatically
installing since (so far) Nouveau always manages to crash something I try to
use; I have not actually tried it yet with the new Lubuntu, I suppose I ought
to try one day...), and my monitor is set to a resolution of 1792x1344 (where
DO they get these wierd coordinates?)
Since GIMP remembers window placement between sessions, and I moved the
window/dock so that it was entirely visible, this is obviously no longer a
problem,
but it would look bad for a new user of GIMP, and not everyone knows about
Alt-Drag to lasso straying windows...

" Michael Schumacher [GIMP developer] "
was curious if this was a Lubuntu- or Ubuntu-only bug, as he had not
encountered it.

I was going to report it at https://bugs.launchpad.net/lubuntu/+filebug
but the only "Project:"s that one can select are "Lubuntu Artwork", "...
Software Center",
"... next", "... Tweaks", "LxFind", and "LxScreenshot", in none of whose
categories GIMP belongs, so I am "ubuntu-bug"ing it here...

If any Ubuntu or Lubuntu users have either experienced this, or want to install
it and see if
it happens for them, Michael and I (and probably others) would be interested in
knowing about it.

[Bug 1603696] Re: [K501UX, Conexant CX20751/2, Black Headphone Out, Right] No sound at all

2017-05-01 Thread Raphaël Droz
E555, same chip, same problem.
This guy too:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/585709/headphones-not-recognized/674501
This one too, but got it fixed using the right "model":
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/slackware64-on-lenovo-g50-70-no-sound-4175514003/
and here too (but managed to solve it):
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=224771
Same chip, but opposite issue (sound in the headphone only);

I agree that null field is a bit boring, but it's one of those skills
which could be really useful but we underestimate because it's not an
active spell - I think it gives the hero certain utility which is
often forgotten.

I do however thing the range on the thing could do with increasing,
perhaps to around 1300 or so.

[Bug 1687501] [NEW] Wifi can't connect on Ubuntu Gnome live usb 17.04

2017-05-01 Thread Jos
Public bug reported:

When using Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 live usb my wifi network shows as
available, but when I enter the password it can't connect. I attempted
several times and ensured the password was correct.

Tried using Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 live usb as a comparison and it connects
without issue.

I know my wifi adapter is supported by linux. I have Xubuntu 16.04
installed on my hard drive and have never had an issue with wifi
connection.

[Bug 1687502] [NEW] "Show all application" requires multiple double clicks if list is empty

2017-05-01 Thread Stefan Helmert
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04.2: If right-click a file clicking "Open With" -> "Other
apllication..." a list of "Related Applications" is shown. "Other

works only if the list contains at least one item. If it is completely
empty the button does nothing. But click fast double clicks multiple
time on it after clicking the empty list, it will open the "Other
