[Bug 1628659] Re: "d-i partman/unmount_active boolean true" not working

2017-06-19 Thread Carl Karsten
I get the same message, and I have:

d-i partman/unmount_active boolean false

My case:
I have a 2nd usb stick with ubuntu-16.04.2-server-amd64.iso
the installer mounts it under /cdrom, and then asks me if I want to unmount it
so it can step on it.
perhaps this should be a special case?

Anyway, I wonder what the relation is between unmount_active and
"Do you want the installer to try to unmount...?"

[Bug 1699010] Re: process start times offset by host uptime

2017-06-19 Thread Paul Collins
My kernel above is downrev, but this also happens with the current zesty
kernel:

[agnew(~)] uname -a
Linux agnew 4.10.0-24-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 14 08:14:34 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[agnew(~)] uptime

Tue Jun 20 04:48:00 UTC 2017
 STARTED
Tue Jun 20 04:48:45 2017

The container was started on boot, so 45 seconds sounds about right.

And then if I restart the container, the offset becomes larger:

I had the same problem after updating ubuntu to 17.04. After some recent
updates it seems to be solved and system doesn't crash anymore, but the
cpu fan is overworking and the computer is heated abnormally. This
happens only with Facebok in Mozilla Firefox and closing Facebook tab
put the system back to normal mode.

[Bug 1698918] Re: no internet connection when strongswan vpn is activated

2017-06-19 Thread Seth Forshee
A couple of things for you to try:

- There's a new 4.11 kernel in artful-proposed, 4.11.0-7, which includes
a couple new 4.11 stable releases. If the problem is fixed in 4.12 then
the fix may have also been included in a stable update.

- If that one doesn't work, try the latest vanilla 4.11 stable kernel
without Ubuntu patches (currently http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.11.6/). If this works then we know that one of the
Ubuntu patches is causing the issue.

[Bug 1699005] [NEW] Update to 1.13

2017-06-19 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Older versions of Ubuntu are running older versions of snapd-glib. There have
since been bug fixes and support for newer API that was added to snapd since
release.

[Test Case]
1. Attempt to use new API in snapd-glib

Expected result:
New API is available

Observed result:
New API is not available

[Regression Potential]
There is a risk of breaking existing use cases. This is reduced by the
regression tests in the package and the newer versions of snapd-glib working in
newer releases.

[Bug 1699004] [NEW] APST gets enabled against explicit kernel option

2017-06-19 Thread Nils
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X270 with a Toshiba nvme SSD

$ sudo nvme list
Node SN Model
Namespace Usage Format FW Rev

- --
/dev/nvme0n1 177S10WYTAMT THNSF5256GPUK TOSHIBA
1 256.06 GB / 256.06 GB512 B + 0 B 51025KLA

I was affected by this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1678184?comments=all
before. After disabling APST by adding "nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0"
in /etc/default/grub, the bug went away.

Since yesterday, however the bug has returned, with the system dying
with I/O errors after an hour or so.

I verified, that the kernel option is still being set

$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.10.0-22-generic.efi.signed
root=UUID=365f1a9c-9598-4ad5-a387-d02f771767a1 ro quiet splash
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 vt.handoff=7

however it turns out that it is being ignored for some reason, and
running

$ sudo nvme get-feature -f 0x0c -H /dev/nvme0

reports that APST is enabled. I can successfully disable it manually
using

$ sudo nvme set-feature -f 0x0c -v=0 /dev/nvme0

and the problem goes away. However, after any reboot and even after
waking the system from suspend, it is reenabled, causing the system to
crash after a short while.

[Bug 1694596] Re: LiteOn NVMe issue

2017-06-19 Thread John Neffenger
No, the errors stopped when I reverted to the Ubuntu 16.04 GA kernel and
X server on May 31.

I have been running error-free for over two weeks with the "linux-
generic" package version 4.4.0.79.85. It appears there may be something
in Linux kernel version 4.8.0-53.56 that caused the problems, but I'm
reluctant to risk more data loss to double check.

Note that I was running with the HWE kernel version 4.8 for a couple of
months, but I didn't see the errors until I upgraded to 4.8.0-53, and
then I saw the file system errors all the time.

[Bug 1698700] Re: hibmc driver does not include "pci:" prefix in bus ID

2017-06-19 Thread Daniel Axtens
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification
+
+ [Impact]
On the HiSilicon D05 (arm64) board, X crashes when started. [0]

+ [Fix]
The crash is attributable to the bus ID that the hibmc driver reports for the
hibmc graphics card on the board. In particular, the bus id is missing the
"pci:" prefix that most other cards provide: [1]
  - The busid reported on the arm64 system is "0007:a1:00.0"
  - The busid reported on a amd64 system is "pci::00:02.0"

X tests for this prefix. A missing prefix for PCI cards leads to an Xorg
  crash.

- A patch is attached, which prevents the crash. [2][3]
+ Fix this by using the set_pci_busid function from the DRM core.

- I submitted the patch upstream. However, upstream is refactoring the drm
- core, and set_busid is going away, so I'm working on testing if this
- will be necessary once that lands. [4]

- This bug exists to help keep track of the status of this fix across
- upstream and then into our kernels.
+ [Testcase]
+ Successfully tested on a D05 board. [2]

- [0]: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1691991
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Changes are limited to the hibmc driver, so any regression should also be
limited to that driver.
+
+ [Notes]
+ I submitted the patch upstream. However, upstream is refactoring the drm
core, and set_busid is going away. That does fix this issue but the regression
potential of the refactor is enormous, so this seems like the wiser approach.

[Bug 1698994] [NEW] Authentication Agent "Authenticate" button incorrectly greyed out

2017-06-19 Thread Frank Worrell
Public bug reported:

When running a privileged application, such as Synaptic, under gnome-flashback
an Authenticate dialog box pops up.
After I upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04,
the Password box and Authenticate button are now incorrectly greyed out.
I discovered a simple but very annoying workaround:
if I pull down and select a different user
then pull down a second time to select myself,
the Password box and Authenticate button are no longer greyed out
and I can successfully authenticate.

The "Details" pull down in the Authenticate box shows
"Action: com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic" and "Vendor:".

This bug showed up after upgrading,
and might not be directly related to the upgrade,
but possibly due to uninstalling alternate desktops (Xubuntu and Lubuntu.)

[Bug 539851] Fwd: Support New Federal Legislation To Protect State Medical Marijuana Laws

2017-06-19 Thread nudepenguin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 992346 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/992346

This is important for our health! Sign so states can keep their HEALTH and
REVENUE without fearing an ignorant Alabama man who still believes the old
government lie that Cannabis has no medicinal value. *The United States
of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human
Services* (Washington,
DC) has a patent on the ANTIOXIDANT benefits of the plant as neuroprotectants.

Friend,

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently sent a letter to Congressional
leadership demanding that Congress set aside the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer
amendment, which protects states that have lawfully enacted medical
marijuana programs from federal interference.

It is apparent that the AG and the Justice Department is seeking to use
every tool at their disposal to roll back the progress that we have made to
provide patients legal access to medical cannabis. That is why, last week,
our allies in the US House and Senate introduced the CARERS Act of 2017,
which would codify Rohrabacher-Blumenauer protections into law and forbid
the Justice Department from overriding them.

*Click here to send a message to your members of Congress urging them to
stop Sessions’ War on Medical Marijuana before it starts.
*

This bipartisan legislation explicitly exempts from federal prosecution
those who are engaged in the “production, possession, distribution,
dispensation, administration, laboratory testing, recommending use, or
delivery of medical marijuana” in instances where these activities comport
with state law.

Thirty states and the District of Columbia now regulate the possession,
use, and dispensing of medical marijuana by statute. It is time the federal
government acknowledge these laws and protect the patients who rely on them.

*Now is the time to protect patients, send a message to your Senators and
Representative to support the CARERS Act of 2017.
*

The Senate bill was introduced by Senators Booker (D-NJ), Paul (R-KY),
Gillibrand (D-NY), Lee (R-UT), Franken (D-MN), and Murkowski (R-AK). The
House companion bill was reintroduced by Rep Young (R-AK) and Rep Cohen
(D-TN).

Medical marijuana is not a partisan issue - in fact, an overwhelming 94% of
Americans support the use of cannabis by authorized medical patients.
Nonetheless, militant prohibitionists including Jeff Sessions still believe
that “good people do not smoke marijuana.” It is our job to tell Congress
that this outdated mentality has no place in policy making decisions.
Attorney General Sessions is not a doctor and he has no business
interfering in doctor-patient relationships.

*Support patients. Protect and expand our progress. Tell your members of
Congress to pass the CARERS Act.
*

Thanks for all you do,
The NORML Team

P.S. Our effort is supported by thousands of people throughout the country
as we work to advance marijuana reform in all 50 states and the federal
level. Can you kick in $5, $10 or $20 a month to help us keep going?

[Bug 1698984] Re: Add snapd-glib to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2017-06-19 Thread Robert Ancell
I had to disable the Qt bindings and the docs as they don't build on
Trusty. We could enable them if necessary with some patching (I doubt
there is a need for either at the current time).

[Bug 1698984] [NEW] Add snapd-glib to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2017-06-19 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
snapd was made available in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, so we should make snapd-glib
available too.

[Test Case]
1. sudo apt-get install libsnapd-glib-dev

Expected result:
It installs!

Observed result:
It doesn't :(

[Regression Potential]
Not currently used by anything, so no chance of regression to existing
packages. We need a patch to run snapd-glib on the older version of GLib, so
there is a chance of different behaviour. The regression tests complete so this
risk is reduced.

[Bug 1698961] Re: System applications can be uninstalled using GNOME Software on Ubuntu 17.10

2017-06-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Matthias, I can confirm this bug when using GNOME on Ubuntu 17.10 with
GNOME Software 3.24.

I even rebuilt GNOME Software with the PackageKit backend instead of
Ubuntu's apt backend but I could still reproduce the bug.

I tested with GNOME Calculator which is fairly small without many
reverse-depends and is only a recommends of ubuntu-desktop.

[Bug 1696434] Re: drmgr command fails during the scale-up test on Novalink System (Brazos)

From the drmgr log, you can see that we get a ENODEV return code when

This indicates that the rpadlpar_io kernel modules was unable to find
the device in the device tree. This doesn not seem right because earlier
in the drmgr logs we add the device to the device tree. Additionally,
the drmgr code validates that the add succeeds by retrieveing the newly
added device node from the device tree as a sanity check. There are no
  failures reported for this.

[Bug 1692127] Re: duplicate signature for Package problems can be too short

2017-06-19 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

- Steve brought up bug 1691983 and how it's duplicate signature is missing
- information. It contains:
+ [Impact]
+ apport is creating a shorter than necessary duplicate signature in
apport-package bug reports which can lead to misconsolidation and confused
developers.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1) Boot a system with an old kernel installed or a freshly installed system
+ 2) edit /etc/default/grub and replace a ` with a '
+ 3) Upgrade the kernel, watch it crash
+ 4) Discover a crash report with a DuplicateSignature whose 2nd line starts
with "Examining"
+
+ With the version of the package from -proposed the DuplicateSignature in
+ this case should really have a 2nd line that starts with 'Setting up
+ linux-image* ...'. While in this particular case not much is lost in
+ other cases valuable information will be missing.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The code change is correct and has been tested in artful, additionally I'm
using the same regular expression to clean up apport-package reports as they
come in to LP. The only risk here is a typo in the patch that would cause the
hook (the change is in the ubuntu general hook) to error out which apport would
handle gracefully and we just wouldn't have a DuplicateSignature.
+
+ [The Original Description]
+ Steve brought up bug 1691983 and how it's duplicate signature is missing
information. It contains:

  package:shim-signed:1.27~16.04.1+0.9+1474479173.6c180c6-1ubuntu1
  Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
  Installation finished. No error reported.
Running in non-interactive mode, doing nothing.
dpkg: error processing package shim-signed (--configure):

+  subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

  But is missing:

  Setting up shim-signed (1.27~16.04.1+0.9+1474479173.6c180c6-1ubuntu1) ...

  debconf: (Cannot connect to /tmp/aptdaemon-7jrqb_du/debconf.socket:
Connection refused at (eval 18) line 3.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Noninteractive

This is because of the following code in data/general-hooks/ubuntu.py:

  145 PKG_MSGS = ('Authenticating', 'De-configuring', 'Examining',
  146 'Installing ', 'Preparing', 'Processing
triggers', 'Purging',
147 'Removing', 'Replaced', 'Replacing', 'Setting up',
  148 'Unpacking', 'Would remove')
  149 for line in termlog.split('\n'):
  150 if line.startswith(PKG_MSGS):
  151 dupe_sig = '%s\n' % line
  152 continue

The shim-signed package prints a line starts with "Installing " and that
  matches PKG_MSGS so we reset the dupe_sig because that's a message we'd
  expect from a package manager.

[Bug 1692837] Re: Ubuntu 16.04.02: powerpc-ibm-utils: drmgr does not scale with large number of virtual adapters

2017-06-19 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justification]
On a NovaLink system, the time drmgr takes to complete increases linearly
with the number of virtual adapters. This is unreasonable.

  [Test case]
To be completed by IBM, who have access to the hardware.
  1. Add 200 virtual adapters to an LPAR
  2. Run time /usr/sbin/drmgr -c slot -s -Q
  3. Confirm that this takes multiple seconds to return.
  4. Install powerpc-utils from -proposed.
  5. Run time /usr/sbin/drmgr -c slot -s -Q again
  6. Confirm that this takes less than a second to return.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Any bugs introduced in this code could cause drmgr/lsslot to fail to
correctly operate at all on the slots. However, the code is reasonably generic
and the risk is low of this code failing intermittently: if it passes
verification it's reasonable to expect it will work everywhere.

  == Comment: #0 - Jeremy A. Arnold
  ---Problem Description---
The time to run commands such as "drmgr -c slot -s U8247.22L.211E15A-V1-C210
-a -w 1" increases linearly with the number of slots on the system. For cloud
environments with a large number of VMs hosted by a single NovaLink partition
(or a small number of VIOS partitions), the number of virtual slots in the
NovaLink partition can grow large, and the long drmgr time can be a major
factor in the time to deploy new VMs.

In one recent test, the call above took about 29 seconds to complete on
a system with around 100 VMs. Earlier in the run (when there was less
than 10 VMs) it only took about 2 seconds.

I'm not at all an expert on this area, but it would appear that drmgr is
iterating through all of the slots in order to find the one that was
requested. Some evidence for this is provided by running:

  sudo time /usr/sbin/drmgr -c slot -s U8247.22L.211E15A-V1-C210 -Q

This is taking about 14 seconds elapsed time (it may have been slower
during the actual run due to concurrent executions of drmgr) on a system
with about 232 virtual adapter slots. The time is similar if I make a
request for a slot that does not exist (e.g. change C210 to C250), so it
would appear that nearly all of the runtime is for looking up the slot
and not for actually retrieving information about it.

Adding -d20 to the above command provides additional debug data. This
shows that the majority of the time is between these two lines of
  output:

  ---
Could not find DRC property group in path:
/proc/device-tree/pci@800201f.
  DR nodes list
  ---

For reference, the following command can identify the correct entry in
the device tree in about 0.02 seconds. Obviously drmgr has more to do
than just this, but this suggests that there is no fundamental reason
the time has to scale with the number of slots:

  time (find /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/vdevice -name "ibm\,loc-code" |
  xargs grep "^U8247.22L.211E15A-V1-C210-T1$")

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
I used PowerVC to deploy 100 VMs to a NovaLink system and viewed
/var/log/drmgr to observe how long the drmgr calls took during the test.

I believe it would be sufficient to add 200 virtual adapters to an LPAR
  and then run "/usr/sbin/drmgr -c slot -s -Q"

I'm happy to collect additional data in my environment if it would be
  helpful.

  == Comment: #4 - Amartey S. Pearson
I have a proposed fix for this in a github fork. In short, the algorithm
used to populate the dr_nodes needs to be fixed. It currently walks the entire
bus for every theoretical DRC (1000's of times). The fix is to walk the bus
once.

  https://github.com/apearson-ibm/powerpc-
  utils/commit/6fefb6acb6fb302c97d71faef75a12674a50209a

This addresses both drmgr and lsslot as the change is in common code.
An example of the improvement we see:

Here we have a system with 196 populated virtual slots. An lsslot takes
  6.5 seconds.

  root@neo33-2:/usr/sbin# time /usr/sbin/lsslot -c slot | wc -l
  196
  real0m6.495s
  user0m1.108s

[Bug 1698961] Re: System applications can be uninstalled using GNOME Software on Ubuntu 17.10

2017-06-19 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Looks like a compulsory_for_desktop tag is missing then:
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/chap-CollectionData.html#tag-ct-compulsory_for_desktop
Or it's set incorrectly.
In any case, this tag should be in effect now that Ubuntu is running the full
GNOME, so I don't know why GS still allows you to remove key components like GS
itself.

[Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6

2017-06-19 Thread NJ
Cruz, thanks for this.

However, (1) after all the trouble I had getting OpenVPN working, I
don't fancy switching to something else (and my system does work at
present, using the older version of Network Manager).

Also, (2) I don't really understand what you say about /etc/hosts,
though probably I could work it out.

Further, (3) if I understand the last paragraph of your comment #13: I
don't know; after all, at the top of this page we can read not only,
'Xenial - In Progress' (though it seems pretty slow progress! It's been
at least a month since this show-stopping bug was first reported) but
also, 'Yakkety - Triaged'.
