2017-11-02 Thread Cruxic
Some additional info:

Mouse adjustment happens to work fine on normal Ubuntu and Ubuntu-Mate

The xset command also has no effect (eg `xset m 10 1`)

My `xinput --list`:

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it's more the Swing/other toolkit's unique way of rendering
things than GTK. Testing a native GTK-2 app (geeqie) doesn't seem to
exhibit the problem.

Yes I agree with your terminology. Worth noting though even the font
rendering style looks messed up in Netbeans. From what I recall in years
gone by that's a Java-specific issue.

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread md_5
Java isn’t hardcoding them, it’s pulling them from GTK. There is the
possibility that it’s pulling the wrong type of element colour (sorry
not sure about terminology).

I guess the test is to find a GTK 2 app with disabled menu elements that
previously had a white menu which is now black wih this patch.

I did make a test Java Swing app and the disabled elements looked bad,
so it’s not constrained to Netbeans at least.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It's often easier to replace the binary itself with a debug script. For
example:

  mv /usr/bin/gnome-shell /usr/bin/gnome-shell.bin

Now create a new 'gnome-shell' file that's a script which launches
gnome-shell.bin under a profiler/debugger, like:

  #!/bin/sh
  exec MYPROFILER $0.bin $*

and remember to:

  chmod 755 /usr/bin/gnome-shell

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Paul
Tried to get a Massif profile, starting a new gnome-shell with
--replace, but it fails before it can replace the running process due to
bug #1700465:

$ valgrind --tool=massif --num-callers=32 --log-file=/tmp/gnome-
shell.valgrind.log gnome-shell --replace

(gnome-shell:30065): mutter-WARNING **: Can't initialize KMS backend:
Could not get session ID: No such file or directory

If we can't replace it, it should be possible to get the display manager to
launch gnome-shell in valgrind at login. The order of execution seems to be:
gdm3 -> gdm-session-worker -> gdm-wayland-session -> gnome-session-binary ->
gnome-shell. I hit a dead end when trying to find config files though.

Without stack traces from a memory profiler, or confirmation that your
problem is caused by a specific extension or feature, we unfortunately
can't do anything and need to group this bug with similar bug reports,
under bug 1672297.

P.S. The CPU issue should be discussed separately, probably in bug
1696305 or bug 1698792.

Ironically, I'm the one who originally filed that bug ... but the
problem had seemed to go away, only to return after the upgrade to
17.10.

What's your preferred profiler for this kind of bug, and can it be
attached to a running process?

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-11-02 Thread jeremy-list
Once it has happened there is no way to check RAM usage because
keyboard, mouse, and network devices all become completely unresponsive.
I have 3.8 GiB of RAM installed. On the occasions when I have checked
RAM usage shortly before it happened: total RAM usage was 3.8GiB. I have
19.1GiB of swap space enabled, but this problem will happen when swap
usage is still around 10MiB.

[Bug 1624317] Re: systemd-resolved breaks VPN with split-horizon DNS

2017-11-02 Thread Thomas
The issue I had either was this bug or something else, but somehow it's
apparently working in 17.10. Basically, the domain(s) of the corporate
vpn that I connect to resolve over the VPN again, while everything else
resolves as usual. This worked fine in 16.10, was entirely broken in
17.04 and is back to working in 17.10.

[Bug 1603600] Re: NetworkManager ignores pushed openvpn routes

2017-11-02 Thread Dan Mick
This is *still* happening in Artful, nm 1.8.4-1ubuntu3, nm-openvpn
1.2.10-0ubuntu2. Seriously, this needs to be fixed. How do I get
someone's attention? I have tried and cannot follow the path of the
code through the dbus amazingness.

[Bug 1711087] Re: ad2p sink profile mic not available

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not sure, but based on the previous comments it sounds like either:
 (a) Your web browser needs fixing/enhancing to use property media.role=phone
under Linux/PulseAudio; or
 (b) PulseAudio is ignoring property media.role=phone, when upstream claims it
should work [1].

You should log the bug with your web browser and the maintainers will be
able to tell you if they are using property media.role=phone or similar
that PulseAudio requires. Also note that PulseAudio needs to be at v10.0
or higher, which means you need at least Ubuntu 17.04 or later for it to
work at all in theory.

Subject: 8 vhs tapes.

Good psychiatrists do not talk AT people so already there, she's
not trying to help you. Also in psych you learn that change comes
from within so unless it's coming from you, it's not your thought.
You have friends and you know what she's saying to you is a bunch of
lies. She knows how to manipulate you. It's not surprising she's a
psychiatrist since she probably craves feeling in control of others.
My therapist has suggested that I establish boundaries. She said
that when something controlling or manipulative is being said to
change the subject. Try to ignore any criticism so that it's
invalidated. Your father is providing validation which makes this so
much harder to ignore so you can do what I have had to do many times
which is to walk away. She'll continue and she may suggest that
you're "running away" but you're establishing boundaries. Try to
remain calm because they get a little validation from emotional
response. Ultimately if you can avoid contact, that's best but I'm like
you. I blame myself a lot. When we let in the possibility of what
they say to be true, we are setting ourselves up. Think of it as
training a puppy (not to reduce her to that level). You want to reward
and validate positive behavior while you ignore negative behavior.

[Bug 1729558] Re: In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed. But the problem is just Java failing to pay attention to the
theme correctly. It uses the right background colour, but not the right
font colours. It's still using a fixed font colour that works only on
lighter backgrounds. This is a bug in openjdk-8 (or netbeans itself, not
sure).

Michael - I'm able to test this, but I need to set up a fresh machine to
make sure I didn't bodge one of the install steps.

Just to be clear, the xenial-proposed version is 1.13.1 based, and the
earlier PPA version was 1.12.x based, so this is newer code than what I
had first tested.

[Bug 1729441] Re: changing display mode after login terminates session

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Please tell us the result of the upload (what new bug report it
generated or directed you to). There's no use (and it's also a security
risk) attaching the file here.

If the above steps failed to create a new bug or to direct you to
someone else's then please try again. Unfortunately we can't debug a
crash until a .crash file has generated a new bug report that we are
able to read.

[Bug 1725560] Re: OVMF UEFI firmware causes Windows 10 to not boot after upgrade

2017-11-02 Thread Krupp
Alright, here is what I did. I used the default Artful sources. I
started with the updated upstream ovmf version 0~20171027.76fd5a66-1.

apt-get update
apt-get remove ovmf
apt-get install ovmf

dpkg -l ovmf | cat
ovmf 0~20170911.5dfba97c-1 all UEFI firmware for 64-bit x86
virtual machines

Tested package and confirmed not working.

This was without the proposed repository enabled. I initially did not
notice the version was the same as what you posted.

Added proposed sources to /etc/apt/sources.list

apt-get update
apt-get remove ovmf
apt-get install ovmf

dpkg -l ovmf | cat
ovmf 0~20170911.5dfba97c-1 all UEFI firmware for 64-bit x86
virtual machines

It would seem that the package most likely moved quickly from proposed
into the main repositories, however this package does not fix my issue.

Installed the upstream package:
dpkg -i ovmf_0-20171027.76fd5a66-1_all.deb

dpkg -l ovmf | cat
ovmf 0~20171027.76fd5a66-1 all UEFI firmware for 64-bit x86
virtual machines

This package is confirmed working.

If there is anything else I can do, let me know.

[Bug 1729394] Re: Activities Overview on a rotated screen displays with wrong orientation (unrotated)

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Doug, yes sorry about that. There are certainly two issues.

However bug reports that describe multiple bugs are very difficult to
close since you're discussing different things and waiting for multiple
fixes. It's usually recommended to open one bug report per symptom.
However since other people aren't reporting either of them right now and
this is the only place I have no problem with keeping both issues in
this one bug for the time being.

  [Fix]
  commit e678a63e6c95f140befe6fcd81b49075ecb3c701
  Author: Brian Foster
  Date: Mon Oct 9 11:38:56 2017 -0700

xfs: reinit btree pointer on attr tree inactivation walk

xfs_attr3_root_inactive() walks the attr fork tree to invalidate the
associated blocks. xfs_attr3_node_inactive() recursively descends from
internal blocks to leaf blocks, caching block address values along the
way to revisit parent blocks, locate the next entry and descend down
  that branch of the tree.

The code that attempts to reread the parent block is unsafe because it
assumes that the local xfs_da_node_entry pointer remains valid after
an xfs_trans_brelse() and re-read of the parent buffer. Under heavy
memory pressure, it is possible that the buffer has been reclaimed and
reallocated by the time the parent block is reread. This means that
'btree' can point to an invalid memory address, lead to a
random/garbage value for child_fsb and cause the subsequent read of
the attr fork to go off the rails and return a NULL buffer for an attr
fork offset that is most likely not allocated.

Note that this problem can be manufactured by setting
XFS_ATTR_BTREE_REF to 0 to prevent LRU caching of attr buffers,
creating a file with a multi-level attr fork and removing it to
  trigger inactivation.

To address this problem, reinit the node/btree pointers to the parent
buffer after it has been re-read. This ensures btree points to a valid
record and allows the walk to proceed.

  [Test]
  The patch has been tested.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Clean cherry-pick queued for stable, so we'll be picking it up anyway.
