[Bug 1739992] [NEW] Unable to write bootloader on any of my attached drives

2017-12-24 Thread Matt Needles
Public bug reported:

Installed 17.10 on /dev/sda6, internal SSD, with /home on /dev/sdb1,
first partition on external HDD. ubiquity could not install bootloader
on either device. This install is an upgrade of 17.04 (i386) to 17.10

[Bug 1739991] [NEW] error processing archive (--unpack): unable to open '.dpkg-new': Operation not permitted

2017-12-24 Thread iczero
Public bug reported:

dpkg has failed to install or upgrade certain packages recently, with
the following (sample) output:

Unpacking linux-image-4.13.0-21-generic (4.13.0-21.24) over (4.13.0-21.24) ...
Preparing to unpack
.../linux-image-extra-4.13.0-21-generic_4.13.0-21.24_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking linux-image-extra-4.13.0-21-generic (4.13.0-21.24) ...
dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-extra-4.13.0-21-generic_4.13.0-21.24_amd64.deb
 (--unpack):

 Operation not permitted
[1]18746 segmentation fault sudo apt install -f
%

This problem appears seemingly at random, and has already occurred
several times. apt will sometimes segfault, but other times report that
dpkg errored. Repeatedly running the command results in a different file
being shown every time, seemingly sequentially. Removing the whole
directory tree and retrying does not solve the problem.

Ubuntu version: 17.10
What was supposed to happen: linux-image-4.13.0-21-generic getting installed
successfully
What happened instead: apt segfaulted after dpkg failed to write to a file

[Bug 1733127] Re: Session crashes when monitor is disconnected

2017-12-24 Thread Nipun
Same problem for me too. Using a Samsung monitor via Displayport on a
NVIDIA 980 graphics card.

Its a major issue for me cause I just using a Samsung soundbar with a
HDMI passthrough setup of Desktop <> Soundbar <> Monitor. The soundbar
turns off after few minutes of inactivity (fixed time, cant change).
This stops the HDMI passthrough as well (silly, cant get around it).
This causes the system to logout and all my processes get killed.

[Bug 1734953] Re: Merge rhythmbox 3.4.2 from Debian

2017-12-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package rhythmbox - 3.4.2-1ubuntu1

---
rhythmbox (3.4.2-1ubuntu1) bionic; urgency=medium

  [ Jeremy Bicha ]
  * Merge with Debian (LP: #1734953). Remaining changes:
+ Split out mozilla and zeitgeist plugins
+ debian/control.in:
  - Allow unity-control-center as alternate dependency
  - Suggest instead of recommend gst-plugins-ugly
  - Suggest rhythmbox-plugin-zeitgeist
  - Recommends rhythmbox-plugin-alternative-toolbar. It improves the
user interface and makes it fit better with GNOME.
+ debian/rhythmbox-plugins.install, debian/control{,.in}: Drop context
plugin - it's mostly broken and would need porting to webkit2 anyway.
+ debian/patches/02_use_escaped_podcast_uri.patch
  - Handle podcasts that have sound files with the same basename
+ debian/patches/03_magnatune_partner.patch:
  - Change magnatune partner ID to 'ubuntu'.
+ debian/patches/05_hide_on_quit.patch
  - Hide (not quit) if RB is playing when closed.
+ debian/patches/07_quicklists.patch
  - Add quicklists.
+ debian/patches/08_stop_quit.patch:
  - Add a "Stop & Quit"-option to the quickmenu (via .desktop)
  - Add new symbol to librhythmbox-core10.symbols
+ debian/patches/make-shuffle-repeat-proper-toggle-actions.patch,
  debian/patches/restore-traditional-menubar.patch: Add a traditional
menubar back when we want it, and fix the shuffle/repeat actions so they
  work correctly there.
+ debian/patches/0002-grilo-container-max-tracks.patch:
  increase CONTAINER_MAX_TRACKS to 15000
+ debian/patches/10_encoding_use_ubuntu_profiles.patch, debian/*.prs,
  debian/rhythmbox-data.install:
  - Add Ubuntu encoding presets and use them by default.
+ debian/source_rhythmbox.py: Add an apport hook.
+ Add breaks/replaces since we moved plugins from rhythmbox and rhythmbox-
  plugins-magnatune back to rhythmbox-plugins

  [ Simon McVittie ]
  * gir1.2-rb-3.0 Provides gir1.2-mpid-3.0, since it also contains
MPID-3.0.typelib

rhythmbox (3.4.2-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release.
  * debian/librhythmbox-core10.symbols:
- Remove marshal symbols. Not a problem as they were internal.

[Bug 1739984] [NEW] Approximately 10 sec after login Ubuntu restarts by it self and goes back to login mode. This happened after latest update from 14.04 to 16.04.

2017-12-24 Thread Evert Håkansson
Public bug reported:

A system update from 14.04 to 16.04 was suggested and accepted. After that
update the computer goes back to login state after approximately 10 seconds.
This behavior is repeated and is impossible to break: So far I haven't found
any workaround that gives me access to saved files or other information on the
computer.
"Guest login" is possible without the computer restarting but it does not give
access saved files on teh administrator account and does nit allow any repair
or updating actions.

Please advice what to do to get around this problem and to repair or
update the ubuntu 16.04 installation without losing saved files or other
information.

Requests:
1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
=> See below

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center
=> See below

3) What you expected to happen
=> Normal startup

4) What happened instead
=> The computer starts normally but approx. 10 sec after logging in the screen
gets black and the
computer goes back asking for user name and password.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-24 Thread Bear_Ukraine
#276
I have two laptops - one was damaged (Xubuntu 17.10) and one was\is ok (Kubuntu
17.10).

Before putting hdd from damaged laptop to ok one, I tried to run
workable Kubuntu in damaged laptop... Kubuntu tried to start (I saw logo
+ grub worked + cmd worked), but at the end no luck.

So simply putting workable hdd\OS in the damaged laptop in my case did
not fix the problem.

Regarding OS reinstallation. In my case I removed all partitions and
created a new ones via standard Partition Manager which is provided
during the installation of OS.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-24 Thread Marcin Ciosek
#275
Very similar procedure I have shared with few of other Lenovo forum members
(and few others from here).
Sadly, did not receive feedback or some were not able to follow my instructions.

Key was to force BIOS recognizing changes by replacing hard drive. My
trick was to have same partitions map but other drive (so the
partitions' IDs are the same but the hardware vendor different) and that
(in my opinion) was causing BIOS to self unlock.

[Bug 1671360] Re: System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

2017-12-24 Thread LCID Fire
I encountered a similar or same problem on Gigabyte AB350 with Ubuntu 16.04
running `4.13.0-21-generic #24~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 18 19:39:31 UTC
2017`. It even shows up on 18.04 Alpha.
Only thing that makes it halfway work is setting `acpi=off`.

Isn't this supposed to be fixed by now?

[Bug 1269177] [unattended-upgrades/artful] possible regression found

2017-12-24 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
As a part of the Stable Release Updates quality process a search for
Launchpad bug reports using the version of unattended-upgrades from
artful-proposed was performed and bug 1739918 was found. Please
investigate this bug report to ensure that a regression will not be
created by this SRU. In the event that this is not a regression remove
the "verification-failed" tag from this bug report and add the tag "bot-

[Bug 1739978] [NEW] Long delay when locking and waking from screensaver with SVG wallpaper

2017-12-24 Thread Ben High
Public bug reported:

This bug may not be the fault of Caja. That's just my best guess for the
culprit at this time.

In MATE, when locking the screen (either by using CTRL+ALT+L or
System->Lock Screen), the system will wait for around 5-10 seconds
before going to the screensaver. The screen does not freeze, and the
cursor can still move, but clicking and typing have no effect on any
open applications.

Additionally, once the computer has locked and the screensaver is being
displayed, moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard will cause
the system to wait another 5-10 seconds before displaying the password
prompt. During this period, the screensaver will continue to play as if
nothing has happened.

This problem only seems to occur when there is an SVG file set as the
desktop background. This does not happen with PNG or JPG backgrounds.

To replicate:
1. Set an SVG file as the background image. In theory, any SVG file should work.
2. Lock the screen either with CTRL+ALT+L or System->Lock Screen.
3. When the screensaver appears, move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard.

Expected result:
The screen will immediately (or with a very short delay) lock when the user
locks the screen, and should immediately (or with a very short delay) display
the password prompt when being woken from the screensaver.

Actual result:
The system pauses for around 5-10 seconds between the user locking the screen
and the screensaver appearing, and the screen pauses for another 5-10 seconds
between the user moving the mouse/pressing a key and the system waking from the
screensaver.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-24 Thread Bear_Ukraine
I reanimated my Acer TravelMate B113.

My story:
I had Xubuntu 17.10. Once an update was installed (some apps + kernel), after
reboot OS stopped to work. I tried to load from USB using 17.10 (twice) and
17.04 (twice). Both OS from the same flash drive. No luck. I want to mention
that I was able to change+save settings in Bios.

Few days ago someone above wrote that he put a hdd from damaged laptop
to normal one, reinstalled OS and moved hdd back to the damaged laptop.
I decided to do the same. I installed Xubuntu 17.04, put hdd back to
damaged laptop. At this point (before loading a freshly installed OS)
for some reason I deciced to turn off in Bios everything possible (usb,
camera, ehternet, wifi, etc), saved bios changes, rebooted and OS
worked! I rebooted again, turn everything on in Bios, reboot... still
works. As I already have Xubuntu 17.04 on USB (this is the same flash
drive as I mentioned at the beginning), I decided to try to load from
it... mysteriously, but it worked.

As for now, I can not say wether my problem has any relation to this
topic as I thought earlier, but my problem definettely occured right
after update (and possibly due to kernel update).

[Bug 876299] Re: gschem attribute editor has textentry with small height

2017-12-24 Thread Tim G
I am new to gEDA, and I see the same issue in gschem.
In the Add Text dialog (Menu / Add / Text) the text entry field is 1 pixel
tall.

The Add Attribute dialog from the first post of this thread does not
have the problem.

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 64 bit
$ gschem --version
gEDA 1.8.2 (g875406c)

Is this the same issue as before, or a regression? Should I post it as a
new bug since it now affects the Add Text dialog?

Same here; via file manager, entering afc://[device's uuid] allows for
file management, but neither Rhythmbox or Banshee can manage audio files
anymore.

[Bug 1739973] [NEW] HDMI doesn't work with kernel 4.4

2017-12-24 Thread Mark Booth
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu version from 15.10 to 16.04. I know, I
should have done this earlier, but whenever I upgrade there's always
something that doesn't work afterwards. This time it's HDMI. I first
noticed the problem when trying to use the projector at work. Weirdly,
if I go to display settings the projector is detected there it's just
that nothing shows up. Even more weirdly, using a HDMI to VGA adaptor
works fine and similarly using a HDMI to DVI adaptor with my monitor
also works fine. So I initially put it down to a fault with the cable or
the projector. But then I found the same issue with my TV using other
cables. Upon restarting my laptop, I noticed that grub displays fine. I
then tried loading up using kernel 4.2.0-42-generic and that works fine
so it seems that this is just a problem with kernel 4.4.

[Bug 1728467] Re: All files on ntfs partitions are marked executable

2017-12-24 Thread Doug McMahon
@ Matt -
here for my personal builds (16.04/18.04) i've altered source in this manner &
it does what's best for me -
-static const gchar *ntfs_defaults[] = { "uid=", "gid=", NULL };
+static const gchar *ntfs_defaults[] = { "uid=", "gid=", "fmask=0111", NULL };

If you'd like to try such builds use launchpad email & i'll point to pa's where
they are.
(- those particular ppa's are not for general use but one could dl & use any
particular package source.

It looks like this can be fixed by adding "--with-libpython-dir=" to the
configure_flags in debian/rules to set the correct architecture
dependent library path.

2017-12-24 Thread Michael Sheldon
It looks like libgstpythonplugin.so is explicitly deleted in the
debian/rules, presumably because it doesn't currently load due to the
wrong PYTHON_LIB_LOC being set at compile time.
