[Bug 1746807] Re: 18.04 daily installer fails missing kernel

2018-02-17 Thread Simon Quigley
I did a git bisect on the source and it identified this upstream commit
as being the potential culprit: https://salsa.debian.org/apt-
team/apt/commit/1adcf56bec7d2127d83aa423916639740fe8e586

I can confirm that this is the culprit by testing the output of `apt-
cdrom add` before and after reverting that specific commit from the tip
of master.

On further analysis, the following diff is the problematic one:
-  for (std::vector::const_iterator c =
compressor.begin();
-  c != compressor.end(); ++c)
+  for (auto const : APT::Configuration::getCompressorExtensions())
  {
-if (stat((file + c->Extension).c_str(), ) != 0)
+if (stat((file + ext).c_str(), ) != 0)

Reverting that diff and that diff only fixes `apt-cdrom add`.

Julian, could you take a look at why this is problematic? I'm afraid I
don't have the expertise to proceed.

[Bug 1750215] [NEW] kernel 4.0.13-32-generic does not boot after initramfs

2018-02-17 Thread leder
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

I do not know where to file hardware related kernel bugs, so I did
choose grub2 package.

after update to ubuntu 17.10 the latest kernel mentioned above will not
default boot. the old distribution kernel 4.10 is fine and recovery
kernel does perform, too.

I have disk encryption and the affected kernel does not go further than
initramfs, i. e. there is not decryption password screen. in 4.10 there
is graphical decryption screen and in recovery kernel there is CLI
decryption prompt.

I want to boot current 4.13 kernel with all security features!

[Bug 1749690] Re: hp-setup fails to install plugin

2018-02-17 Thread Powersurge
Ok, here is how I was able to get my printer to work.

Step 1: Go to
https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins.
Step 2: Download the plugin files (both 'run' and 'run.asc') for the hplip
version that you are using.
Step 3: Run hp-setup -g. Choose option p to specify a path to the plugin and
use the path to the 'run' file that you downloaded in step 2. It may give you
some errors, but install it anyway.

Now you should have a working printer.

2018-02-17 Thread erik manor
I was running into the same/similar error. Inside of
/var/lib/dpkg/updates one of the files appeared to be stopping my update
process. The contents of the file was,

#padding
#padding
#padding
#padding
#padding

repeating for 150 something lines.

I moved that file out of /var/lib/dpkg/updates and everything seems to
be working fine afterwards. Whether this was the root cause or not I am
not sure, but it might be worth while grep(ing) for this in all the
files in /var/lib/dpkg/updates.

Como indica aqui, tens pacotes quebrados no sistema operativo:

ERROR:root:failed to mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for install (E:Impossível
corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados.)

Os comandos que melhor conheço que resolvem os problemas são:

sudo dpkg --configure -a;
sudo apt install -f;

Se isto resolver, peço que feches o reporte pois não se trata de um
erro.

I can find in the gnome search though, it points to the Ubuntu Software

[Bug 1750197] Re: App Drawer Animation Causes Heavy CPU Spikes in Wayland & XOrg

2018-02-17 Thread Gustavo Silva
How about changing screen brightness? The only animation that causes
some sluggish behaviors is changing screen brightness (I'm on a laptop).
Not sure if this is related or not but worth asking.

If this occurred during the installation **from** the live CD, package
could be ubiquity as well although this is unusual or uncommon hardware
(which does not seem so).

As this does not affects many people. I'd change this bug priority to
low.

Thank you, we will try it as soon as possible.

Currently I'm on vacation, and will not be able to test it until about
March 5 (2 weeks from now). But as soon as I test it, I'll let you know
about the results.

It would be great if someone else could try it too.

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 1739322] Re: Hazardous displays when coming back from sleep state

2018-02-17 Thread Pierre Wilch
Christopher M. Penalver,

- I tried to reproduce the problem after login with GNOME Flashback
(Metacity) for 2 days.
I tried many things, but without success, everything worked perfectly.

- By awakening with Unity, the display comes back during one second,
then every time becomes black again during another second, and then
stays on with or without the blinking problem of parts of the screen.
With Metacity, as a normal behavior, the screen does not become black
again during one second, and the display is immediately good, as expected.
The screen becoming black again is not normal and is a sign for a not
mastered screen processing, pieces of code taking their liberty for
undesirable results.

- I have noticed that the problem has more chance to occur after opening
and closing several windows, and switching between them. Again today.

- It is possible that the problem appeared with the kernel release which
began to manage Intel graphic cards.
I remember, without warranty, having feared the worse at that moment,
_before_. Since, perhaps with Unity a crazy process is remaining on
awakening.

[Bug 1748678] Re: Intel graphics timeout, possibly caused wifi network to fail

2018-02-17 Thread Daniel Llewellyn
I've tentatively marked it as fixed upstream, but as the bug occurs
sporadically I might not have tested long enough to recreate the
conditions which trigger the bug. I don't have reliable reproduction
steps (read: any steps) so I will continue testing the upstream kernel
in case I do hit it.

[Bug 1750197] [NEW] GUI Animations Cause Heavy CPU Spikes in Wayland & XOrg

2018-02-17 Thread Luke B.
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: 17.10
gnome-shell version: 3.26.2
System Theme: CommuniTheme Beta

Upon navigating through various areas of the system, GUI animations are
very stuttery. This heavily affects the CPU usage of my device. For
instance, opening the shell app drawer displays a very janky animation,
and my CPU will spike to nearly 85% for each open/close. This happens
regardless of using XOrg or Wayland; however Wayland appears to have an
overall lower impact on resource usage. The CPU in this laptop isn't the
greatest (being a 2014 Celeron), but this is noticeably more sluggish
compared to previous releases like 16.04 and 16.10.

This same issue is still existent, but somewhat less noticeable on my
other i5-6400 (GTX 1050) machine. Also, emulating this release in a VM
with 2 CPUS and 4096MB of RAM renders it unresponsive for 3-5 seconds
after opening/closing the app drawer.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with requests for more info, as I
will be happy to help.

[Bug 1750174] Re: Update gnome-control-center to 3.27.90

2018-02-17 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  News

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/blob/master/NEWS

  To Do
  -
  1. Rebase 70_allow_sound_above_100.patch
  (This patch has been somewhat upstreamed. However, the upstream feature is
incomplete without the gnome-settings-daemon patches that haven't been accepted
upstream yet. Also, the upstream gsettings schema for this feature has a
different name than the Ubuntu schema. Didier's plan was to keep using the
Ubuntu schema name until the gnome-settings-daemon patches were accepted. After
that, we'll need a way to migrate the gsettings schema.)

  2. The app icon was renamed from 'preferences-system' to 'gnome-control-
  center'. We'll want to update humanity-icon-theme and the Ubuntu Budgie
  default themes. But there is a naming issue with gnome-icon-theme so
  let's hold off on changing icon themes until that gets resolved:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/3

[Bug 1747711] Re: file mis-identifies modern executables as application/x-sharedlib

2018-02-17 Thread Kees Cook
This is (sort of) a bug in file. The problem is not being able to
distinguish between shared objects and PIE binaries. (The latter have
INTERP ELF sections and can be run directly.)

$ readelf -l /bin/true
...
Elf file type is EXEC (Executable file)
...
  INTERP 0x0238 0x00400238 0x00400238
 0x001c 0x001c  R  1
  [Requesting program interpreter: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2]
...

$ readelf -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmagic.so.1.0.0
...
Elf file type is DYN (Shared object file)
...[no INTERP]...

$ readelf -l /usr/bin/ssh
...
Elf file type is DYN (Shared object file)
...
  INTERP 0x0238 0x0238 0x0238
 0x001c 0x001c  R  1
  [Requesting program interpreter: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2]

So for mime types to distinguish, "file" needs to grow reporting of the
INTERP presence.

This has become an issue in bionic due to PIE-by-default.

[Bug 1750188] [NEW] d-i doesn't automatically detect network connection with libvirt

2018-02-17 Thread Simon Quigley
Public bug reported:

I use libvirt (via virt-manager) to do testing for bugs that require a
fresh install. I noticed lately that when using d-i to install Lubuntu
Alternate Bionic Daily, I have to manually configure network.

A VM with the exact same configuration works completely fine with a

[Bug 1690085] Re: Ryzen 1800X freeze - rcu_sched detected stalls on CPUs/tasks

2018-02-17 Thread John Paul Herold
Been following this thread along with
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196683. To help us aggregate
data and look for patterns, I created a google form:
https://goo.gl/forms/oGCTPnNK0vJtNntj2

Message me if you want to be a collaborator on it, and also please share
feedback. Goal is to keep it simple and straightforward so that it
compliments this thread (and kernel bugzilla thread). I could have had
questions for every workaround listed across both threads, but tried to
distill it to the ones most commonly stated/used/discussed.

2018-02-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jalo Moster, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

1) To clarify the Bug Description:

1b) How long in seconds/minutes does it take to launch a terminal?
1c) If you use the GUI instead of a hotkey, does this change anything?

2) Is this something that started to happen after an update? If so,
which specifically?

[Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6

2018-02-17 Thread dlotton
By far, the easiest and most effective workaround I've found is commenting out
"dns=dnsmasq" in "/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf" as a few others have
suggested above.

Disappointing that this continues to be an ongoing problem.
