[Bug 1435695] Re: intel-microcode could use better docs about upstream versions per CPU

2018-03-17 Thread Jason Mills
~ 2 years later ... :-)

For item 2, Intel now* documents what CPU family and stepping(s) are
covered by each "Intel Processor Microcode" data file bundle. However,
it would be better just point to the authoritative location, rather than
engaging in lots of copy-pasta (yes pun) from the upstream source. See
additional comment below.

(*) As of the 20180312 release, which is the first non-emergency release
since Spectre/Meltdown et al surfaced.

For item 3, I'd suggest adding that sentence + code example to the README, if
not already added.

For item 1, 2, and 4, this again could be a single line in the .deb Description
or README that points back to the canonical (lower-case-C) URL for each data
file bundle release upstream.

For example, the 20171117 release was
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27337/Linux-Processor-
Microcode-Data-File

... and the 20180312 release is
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27591/Linux-Processor-
Microcode-Data-File

Intel also has a far more human consumable form of the information in their
"Microcode Update Guidance" document, which (at present -- 2018.03.17) gets
revised on a quasi-weekly cadence. Unfortunately it does not have a long-lived
URL, as older editions get retired out.

March 2018 URL is https://newsroom.intel.com/wp-
content/uploads/sites/11/2018/03/microcode-update-guidance.pdf

Perhaps Canonical could lobby for some form of longer-lived URL.

This happens if you have the package "ayatana-indicator-application"
installed. Note that although it appears to be stealing the indicators,
they don't show up in indicator-plugin instead.

[Bug 1756614] Re: Status Notifier draws some icons at the wrong size

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
** Package changed: xfce4-statusnotifier-plugin (Ubuntu) => indicator-
cpufreq (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- Status Notifier draws some icons at the wrong size
+ indicator-cpufreq sets a bogus icon theme path

** Description changed:

  To reproduce:

- Open appearance settings.
- Select a theme that makes panels a light colour.
- Select an icon set designed for light panels.
+ install Xubuntu 18.04
+ Open appearance settings.
+ Select a theme that makes panels a light colour.
+ Select an icon set designed for light panels.
  Install the package indicator-cpufreq
Open a terminal and run "indicator-cpufreq"

  Result:

- The indicator will appear in the legacy notification area and the
- icon will be rendered with the correct colour.
+ The indicator will be rendering using the -dark icon set (designed
+ for dark panels.)

- Now:
+ This happens because indicator-cpufreq sets a custom icon path which
+ does not point to any icons. This causes the fallback icons from the
+ hicolor theme to be used instead, and those are the dark variants.

- Open panel preferences and add a status notifier widget.
-
- Result:
-
- The indicator should move from the notification area to the status
- notifier area. But now it will be rendered as a light icon instead of a
- dark variant.
-
- This seems to happen because status notifier doesn't handle light/dark
- variants.

[Bug 1756627] [NEW] status notifier can't see appindicators which are started after it

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Have status notifier on panel.
2. Run a program which creates an appindicator. (attached)

Result:

Appindicator is not seen on panel.

Expected result:

Appindicator should immediately appear on the panel.

Workaround:

Restart the panel, or remove and re-add the sn-plugin.
The appindicator will now be visible.

A simple program which creates an appindicator is attached for testing
purposes.

[Bug 1365874] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS do not support ext4 metadata checksumming

2018-03-17 Thread Theodore Ts'o
If you are trying to build from the unpacked debian sources for 1.43.x,
you'll need to run the commands:

./debian/rules mrproper
./debian/rules

... to have the build system figure out which antique version of Debian
build infrastructure you are using, and regenerate debian/control from
debian/control.in. (Usually I just check

That may be what you are running into. Note that starting in 1.44.0,
I've dropped all of the backwards compatibility stuff, on the theory
that people who want to support ancient Linux distribution systems are
paid the big bucks, and it wasn't worth my volunteer time to make it all
work and do all of the testing on ancient systems. (And especially
since most enterpise distro folks weren't taking the latest bug fixes
anyway, and it's been over ten years since I've had to care about
enterprise distro customers.)

The short version is that the backwards compatibility stuff was all
about making things like the debug packages work. It's all packaging
gunk, and so as long as you crate packages that pass lintian checks,
it's probably fine.

As a reminder, the distro packaging of the latest version of e2fsprogs
for old back-level enterpise distros may cause the distro release folks
to want to constain the default ext4 file system features that are
enabled, since the older versions of grub, the linux kernel, et. al,
might not support metadata checksuming (for example). So I could
easily see that Ubuntu might want to adjust misc/mke2fs.conf.in file to
disable certain file system features from being enabled in freshly
created file systems by default, for example. I also have a vague
memory that Ubuntu had a slightly different convention for supporting
debug symbol packages on older Ubuntu systems. If so, that may require
more adjustments --- or maybe you'll just decide to disable the debug
symbol packages and call it a day.

[Bug 1756625] [NEW] gnome-calculator issues

2018-03-17 Thread peterzay
Public bug reported:

***
Please change this bug from gedit to the correct package.
***

The default system calculator has lost its options feature (comma
separator, deg/rad, precision, etc.)

It displays left justified instead of right justified.

Clicking on its icon in launcher with the mouse wheel to launch another
instance does not work. That is a monumental problem.

Trying to report these bugs with ubuntu-bug -w produces the attached
screenshot except that you cannot scroll to the bottom to continue the
reporting process (hence the gedit proxy).

[Bug 1756624] [NEW] Status notifier shows appindicators in random order.

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. run several programs that create appindicators.
2. add multiple sn-plugin to the panel.

Result:

Each sn-plugin shows the appindicators in a different order.

Expected result:

The order should be deterministic, ie the order is not important but
it should always be the same given the same appindicators are running.

Screenshot attached.

[Bug 1756612] Re: Launch and Directory Menu items icons are too small

2018-03-17 Thread Sean Davis
Adwaita has some aggressive padding in xfce4-panel. There was a update
in whisker fairly recently that forced the icon padding to 0. There's
probably some leftover patches in Greybird that also adjust this
padding.

[Bug 1597508] Re: openmpi-1.10.2 missing liboshmem [and cuda support]

2018-03-17 Thread J G Miller
If this bug affects you, then please, please DO NOT FAIL to click the
"Affects Me Too" bubble at the top of the page.

When somebody other than the original bug reporter clicks that, the
status of the bug gets changed to "confirmed".

It has long been apparent policy on Launchpad that bugs which are
reported but not confirmed (and are not screaming security issues) tend
to be ignored and just collect dust even if a patch or solution is
presented by the reporter of the bug.

The act of more people confirming the bug tends to give a bug some
priority to getting a fix implemented.

[Bug 1756621] [NEW] missing dependencies on ruby-sinatra, ruby-rack for -S

2018-03-17 Thread Mark Eichin
Public bug reported:

To reproduce: grab a beta-1 ubuntu bionic iso, select "minimal install",
apt install ruby-ronn, run "ruby-ronn -S ." and get:

eichin@vm-bionic-1:~$ ronn -S .
Traceback (most recent call last):

apt install ruby-rack gives:

/usr/lib/ruby/2.5.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:59:in `require':

Finally, apt install ruby-sinatra yields a working server. (I suspect

fine in 18.04.")

[Bug 1365874] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS do not support ext4 metadata checksumming

2018-03-17 Thread Simon Iremonger
HOWEVER, Trusty e2fsprogs backporting situation actually seems to be that, some
change between 1.43.3-1~bpo8+1 and 1.43.4-2 is where the
trusty-incompatibility has accrued, 1.43.9-2 does NOT build on trusty! :-
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/e2fs/e2fsprogs-1.43.9_trusty_build-fail.log

A simple patch to the 'debian/control' file adding the explicit '-dbg' package
entries on the end *APPEARS* to solve all the problems, and allows 1.43.9 [or
1.44.0 for that matter!] to SEEMINGLY build fine, pass all tests, and work fine
on trusty without any issues I can find so-far!:-
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/e2fs/e2fsprogs-1.43.9_trusty_debian-control.patch
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/e2fs/e2fsprogs-1.44.0_trusty_debian-control.patch

This all SEEMS to work fine, but I'd like tytso to comment on this, is
this really a safe workaround or just 'fixing the symptom'. From what I
can see all the right programs are generated and work fine.

AGAIN, I'd highly recommend installing byte-for-byte the 'original' mke2fs.conf
in any trusty-backport version of e2fsprogs, so as to avoid any unwanted
behavioural-changes or configuration-file-update-prompts :-.
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/e2fs/mke2fs.conf.trusty

>From what I can SEE, if doing a significant backport to trusty, I can't
see why not to just go straight to 1.44.0 in this case [again, hopefully
tytso can comment!].

[Bug 1365874] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS do not support ext4 metadata checksumming

2018-03-17 Thread Simon Iremonger
OK On further investigation, I have confirmed a lot of key-facts (1 of 2
linked comments).

e2fsprogs 1.44.0-1 backports to xenial with no difficulty whatsoever,
passes "make fullcheck" and works in every way I can tell, lots of
resizing and checking and use within gparted, etc, all (apparently)
behaving...

HOWEVER, for an official xenial-backport (and especially xenial-SRU), to
minimize possible problems, I would highly recommend making single change of
restoring the 'default' mke2fs.conf EXACTLY (byte-for-byte) as that which came
with xenial e2fsprogs 1.42.13-1ubuntu1 :-
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/e2fs/mke2fs.conf.xenial
This (a) avoids prompting users who've customized their mke2fs.conf about
merging-changes, and (b) avoids functional-change for those with
automated-deployment-scripts etc. based upon ext4 creation.

I presume, a 'xenial-backport' -or- SRU "proposed" update can be started
straight-away? xenial-SRU should DEFINITELY be considered for fsck
compatibility with bionic-created FS.

[Bug 1756606] Re: Kubuntu 18.04 - minimal install option crashes installer

2018-03-17 Thread Rik Mills via ubuntu-bugs
A test with a daily iso spun by the infra using a filesystem.manifest-
minimal-removal fetched to the kubuntu seed seems successful, so the
crash looks to be an artefact of trying to simulate a real case by
pointing ubiquity at a tester provided file. If this continues to test
ok, I'll mark this bug as invalid.

[Bug 1756614] Re: Status Notifier draws some icons at the wrong size

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
On closer inspection it turns out that the icon is being drawn at the
right size. It looks funny because the wrong variant has been selected:
light icon on a light panel. status notifier does not seem to be able to
select the correct variant.

** Description changed:

  To reproduce:

- Install the package indicator-cpufreq
- Open a terminal and run "indicator-cpufreq"
+ Open appearance settings.
+ Select a theme that makes panels a light colour.
+ Select an icon set designed for light panels.
+ Install the package indicator-cpufreq
+ Open a terminal and run "indicator-cpufreq"

  Result:

- The indicator will appear in the legacy notification area and the
- icon will be rendered at the correct size.
+ The indicator will appear in the legacy notification area and the
+ icon will be rendered with the correct colour.

  Now:

- Open panel preferences and add a status notifier widget.
+ Open panel preferences and add a status notifier widget.

  Result:

- The indicator should move from the notification area to the status
- notifier area. But now it will be rendered too small, and the icon will
- look blurred from the scaling.
+ The indicator should move from the notification area to the status
+ notifier area. But now it will be rendered as a light icon instead of a
+ dark variant.

- This happens regardless of how the panel is sized and the widget
- settings are set. See screenshot for a particularly obvious example.
-
- I assume this happens because cpufreq provides a bitmap icon.
+ This seems to happen because status notifier doesn't handle light/dark
+ variants.

+ The top and bottom of the icon are clipped, regardless of how big
you make the panel. It consistently removes 2-3 pixels from the top and

[Bug 1756612] Re: Launch and Directory Menu items icons are too small

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
This screenshot shows the panel in 16.04 vs the panel in 18.04. Same
panel size, theme, icons, font, and DPI.

** Description changed:

  To reproduce:
- Drag an application item on to the panel to create a launcher.
- Right click the launcher and open properties.
- Change the icon to the circular whisker menu icon.
+ Select Adwaita theme in appearance settings.
+ Drag an application item on to the panel to create a launcher.
+ Right click the launcher and open properties.
+ Change the icon to the circular whisker menu icon.

  Result:
- The icon will be rendered at a different size to the whisker menu icon.
+ The icon will be rendered at a different size to the whisker menu icon.

Again, this happens regardless of the panel size. The icon is
consistently 2-3 pixels smaller, but unlike with the Applications Menu,
the icon is shrunk instead of clipped.

  See screenshot.

[Bug 1706203] Re: gnome-shell crashed with heap corruption in g_strfreev() from g_themed_icon_finalize()

2018-03-17 Thread John Steeves
I have been able to replicate the issue without installing additional
extensions. If I install a copy of Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.2 (with a lot of
updates available for it) and keep the app grid (Super+A) open while
installing the latest updates (from the Software Updater or Synaptic) I
was able to reliably replicate the crashing issue in the middle of
installing the updates.

I was also able to upload a symbolic stacktrace of the crash with this

[Bug 1756614] [NEW] Status Notifier draws some icons at the wrong size

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

Install the package indicator-cpufreq
Open a terminal and run "indicator-cpufreq"

Result:

The indicator will appear in the legacy notification area and the
icon will be rendered at the correct size.

Now:

Open panel preferences and add a status notifier widget.

Result:

The indicator should move from the notification area to the status
notifier area. But now it will be rendered too small, and the icon will
look blurred from the scaling.

This happens regardless of how the panel is sized and the widget
settings are set. See screenshot for a particularly obvious example.

I assume this happens because cpufreq provides a bitmap icon.

[Bug 1756612] [NEW] Launch and Directory Menu items icons are too small

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
Drag an application item on to the panel to create a launcher.
Right click the launcher and open properties.
Change the icon to the circular whisker menu icon.

Result:
The icon will be rendered at a different size to the whisker menu icon.

Again, this happens regardless of the panel size. The icon is
consistently 2-3 pixels smaller, but unlike with the Applications Menu,
the icon is shrunk instead of clipped.

See screenshot.

[Bug 1756610] [NEW] luks encrypted USB key cannot be opened on fully encrypted OS

2018-03-17 Thread peterzay
Public bug reported:

***
Please change this bug from gedit to the correct package.
***

A USB key encrypted with the Disks utility always pops up a password
input window upon insertion into systems with an encrypted home
directory.

This is no longer the case. Note that fully encrypted system
installation was used for this OS (Ubuntu 18.04 beta) because encrypted
home directory was not offered by the installation DVD (Bug #1756600).

However, launching file manager does show an encrypted drive is
available for mounting and opening.

When clicking on the USB key in file manager to mount and open the
drive, the expected password input window appears.

Unfortunately, entering the password produces the following error (see
attached screenshot): Error unlocking /dev/sdb1: The function
'bd_cryto_luks_open_blob' called, but not implemented!

In Ubuntu 16.04 with encrypted home directory, the drive opens like a
charm in file manager after password input.

[Bug 1756608] [NEW] Applications Menu plugin clips panel icon.

2018-03-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

Add Applications Menu widget to panel.
Set it to use a circle icon.

Result:

The top and bottom of the icon are clipped, regardless of how big
you make the panel. It consistently removes 2-3 pixels from the top and
bottom of the icon.

Screenshots attached, with a Whisker menu icon (which renders correctly)
for comparison. Whisker menu is dark blue, Applications Menu is light
blue.

[Bug 1756600] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 beta install DVD cannot encrypt home

Public bug reported:

Please change this bug from gedit to the correct product.

On the screen where you define your user name, computer name, id, etc.,
you no longer have the option of asking for an encrypted home directory.

On the trivial side, note that the installer artwork is still aardvark
and once installation is complete, the desktop is also aardvark.
