[Bug 1728238] Re: update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware, firmware fails to load

2018-03-31 Thread dino99
*

Looks like its more a kernel issue related to the Dell drivers, not requesting
the missing GuC.
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/i915

I suppose initramfs is not faulty; maybe linux-firmware is.

Better opening a separate kernel bug on launchpad and upstream to get a
fix chance (need to check the latest kernel version to know if that
issue is solved)

[Bug 1531653] Re: Macbook Pro Retina 11, 1 SD Card Reader Doesn't Work

2018-03-31 Thread Eugene Trotsan
This issue has been bugging me for 2.5 years since I got the machine -
as the 256GB JetDrive becomes useless after resume from sleep.

Do we know what's causing this yet and any workarounds?

Thanks

[Bug 1760377] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 freezes on login with kernel 4.13.0-37-generic

2018-03-31 Thread sfc
Public bug reported:

I updated kernel to 4.13.0-37-generic, and after reboot, it freezes on
the kde login screen. Even sysrq keys does not work. I rebooted again,
and be able to enter password, then it freezes again on plasma loading
screen. I finally selected 4.13.0-36-generic kernel from grub, and my
computer booted normally. I guess there was a kernel panic, but it
didn't show on screen, nor in system logs, or I cannot find it.

   "Wasn't the 20180108 microcode update retracted because of issues? Maybe we

There is no 20180108 download available at Intel now:

Looks like the latest one is messed up too - at least for some

[Bug 1760375] [NEW] cgroup blkio throttle does not work on root group

2018-03-31 Thread Neil
Public bug reported:

from kernel document,
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cgroup-v1/blkio-controller.txt
```
Throttling/Upper Limit policy
-
- Enable Block IO controller
CONFIG_BLK_CGROUP=y
- Enable throttling in block layer
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_THROTTLING=y
- Mount blkio controller (see cgroups.txt, Why are cgroups needed?)
mount -t cgroup -o blkio none /sys/fs/cgroup/blkio
- Specify a bandwidth rate on particular device for root group. The format
  for policy is ":  ".
echo "8:16  1048576" >
/sys/fs/cgroup/blkio/blkio.throttle.read_bps_device
  Above will put a limit of 1MB/second on reads happening for root group
  on device having major/minor number 8:16.
- Run dd to read a file and see if rate is throttled to 1MB/s or not.
# dd iflag=direct if=/mnt/common/zerofile of=/dev/null bs=4K count=1024
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
4194304 bytes (4.2 MB) copied, 4.0001 s, 1.0 MB/s
 Limits for writes can be put using blkio.throttle.write_bps_device file.
```

tested with ubuntu 16.04(xenial) and seems throttle not working, but on
my virtual machine, ubuntu 14.04(trusty) works.

Only because it isn't the latest kernel you have, so it has never had
the latest microcode added into it - it will still be loading the
previous (working) version.

[Bug 1759920] Re: intel-microcode 3.20180312.0 causes lockup at login screen(w/ linux-image-4.13.0-37-generic)

2018-03-31 Thread Justa Guy
>> Gordon Lack (gordon-lack) wrote 23 hours ago:

Well, 4.13.0-32 seems to be unaffected...

On my Dell Inspiron 5559 laptop, with Ubuntu 16.04.3 installed, I had
been running linux-signed-image-4.13.0-36-generic, then it wouldn't boot
after installing Thursday's intel-microcode update. It would however
boot into linux-signed-image-4.13.0-32-generic, after which I tried
installing linux-signed-image-4.13.0-37-generic to see if that would
solve the problem, but it didn't. As it stands I can only boot using the
linux-signed-image-4.13.0-32-generic kernel option in grub manually.

In both cases, the actual boot process varied in how far it would get
before failing.

The first time, trying linux-signed-image-4.13.0-36-generic, the console
text with the green column on the left proceeded to after loading
what appeared as completely, then remained stuck with a steady (not
flashing) grey cursor in screen position 0,0. I waited maybe 4 minutes
for it to load the desktop, but no. As opposed to when booting into
linux-signed-image-4.13.0-32-generic, the mouse pointer appears
approximately 5 seconds after the point where it would hang, with a
whole desktop following maybe 30 seconds afterward.

The first time I tried the linux-signed-image-4.13.0-37-generic kernel,
it wouldn't proceed past the loading bluetooth part of the console text
with the green column to the left. The reboot after this seemed to
get just past the part with the cursor stuck at 0,0, in this case with
it disappearing- I thought a mouse pointer was just about to appear, but
it stopped. Waited only a minute or 2 here before rebooting again. The
third try at linux-signed-image-4.13.0-37-generic got stuck where linux-
signed-image-4.13.0-36-generic had previously, with the cursor at 0,0.

Not sure about the official workaround as is posted in the bug description, as
I've been using linux-signed-image-4.13.0-32-generic since. I don't know why
this one works, or if this is a safe alternative.

[Bug 1731417] Re: Installed network printer removed automatically when turned off

2018-03-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cups-filters - 1.20.2-0ubuntu1

---
cups-filters (1.20.2-0ubuntu1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * New upstream bug fix release
- cups-browsed: If the user modifies/overwrites a print queue
  created by cups-browsed, it will now automatically released
  from the control of cups-browsed, so the modified queue does
  not get removed by cups-browsed on shutdown. (LP: #1731417).
- cups-browsed: The configuration setting
  "CreateIPPPrinterQueues LocalOnly" suppressed also the
  automatic generation of local queues for remote CUPS
  printers whereas this option is only intended for physical
  IPP printers.
- cups-browsed: Identify remote CUPS queues by the
  "printer-type" TXT record entry and not by the
  "ipp(s):///printers/" URIs, there are also IPP
  network printers with such URIs (HP LaserJet Professional
  M1212nf MFP in LP: #1731417).
- .gitignore: Added filter/braille/filters/brftopagedbrf
- cups-browsed, foomatic-rip: Fixed several typos. Thanks to
  Didier Raboud for the patches.
  * Removed all patches with got merged upstream.

[Bug 1711337] Re: Firefox crashes at start on armv7L after 55.0.1 update

2018-03-31 Thread James Donald
@levente (and maybe @herrtimson),

I set up a new Ubuntu MATE system, and in the process realized that your
segfault in /lib/ld-linux-armhf.so.3 is a symptom of bug 1576432. That's
where gdb fails not only for Firefox but even a simple helloworld
program. The workaround there is to install libc6-dbg, which will allow
you to see one of the other two crash signatures that we still don't
have a solution for.

@Chituc,

By waiting a couple days on my Pi 3 I managed to make a gcc-4.9 build of
Firefox 59.0.1, which then crashes on strd r2, r3, [r1]. I'm now
thinking that this startup crash may be more nuanced than being specific
to Ubuntu 16.04 or gcc-5.4. In fact, the Launchpad builds are now
showing something odd: While the 59.0.1 14.04 build that we've talked
about gets all the way to the Skia SIGILL, the recent 59.0.2 14.04 build
from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/armhf/firefox/59.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
segfaults on the strd too.

At least with a custom build I'm now able to get accurate debug symbols.
With the TUI I inspected the source at each level of this stack trace:

(and ran disas /r 0x717c4bc8,... to confirm that this symbol-laden debug
session was still hitting strd r2, r3, [r1])

The most suspicious code is actually the XPCOM invocation. The armhf-
specific assembly in https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/raw-
file/tip/xpcom/reflect/xptcall/md/unix/xptcinvoke_arm.cpp is worrisome.
It has no way of knowing whether registers d16 through d31 are
available, so may allocate the wrong amount of stack space and clobber
extra registers when mixing -mfpu=vfpv3-d16 with -mfpu=neon. The code in
xptcinvoke_aarch64.cpp is completely different and looks more robust.

Thus, if anyone is trying to set up a build environment on Ubuntu 14.04
Trusty, keep in mind you might still hit the strd r2, r3, [r1] SIGSEGV.
On Bionic: the 59.0.1 18.04 build from Launchpad was okay in this
regard, while the 59.0.2 18.04 build hasn't been posted yet so fingers
crossed that it does not regress in the same way.

[Bug 1760359] [NEW] Regression: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: java.nio.ByteBuffer.limit(I)Ljava/nio/ByteBuffer;

2018-03-31 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Since a couple of days, gradle doesn't work on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS any more
on openjdk8. Installing openjdk9 kind of works around this problem, but
it throws a couple of scary illegal access warnings instead. Just a days
ago, everything worked fine so there must have been some bug introduced
into a dependent package.

$ gradle -S
Starting a Gradle Daemon, 8 busy and 2 incompatible and 1 stopped Daemons could
not be reused, use --status for details

FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

[Bug 1757021] Re: ubuntu restarts on resume from hibernate

2018-03-31 Thread eric shell

here: http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln171755/updating-

it starts running the interactive shell, then i see a square prompt with
a red header flash by too quick to read and the computer restarts
without flashing the bios. i have yet to figure out what the problem is.
(i've upgraded the bios before this way without trouble..)

[Bug 1760261] Re: log in to GUI in U-MATE daily 18.04 fails

2018-03-31 Thread Fritz Hudnut
The problem continues after several TTY update/upgrades of packages. I
tried to run the "apport-collect 1760261" command, but, due the issue
with no GUI the browser can't open to "confirm" that I am sending the
data . . . and clearly the data has not been added to the bug report. I
think in the past I've tried to log in via another operating system, as
I am now using to type this post, but if memory serves the browser has
to open in the system that we are reporting the bug from??

As per the bot email I will change the status to "confirmed" even though
I am the OP . . . .  Earlier today I downloaded a fresh daily, so at
some point I will be wiping the system install and trying another one .
. . if I am the only reporter of this problem then perhaps there might
not be a reason to keep this problem install around for "analysis"?? I
have other options so it's not a problem to let it stay "wrong" for a
few days . . . .

[Bug 1760351] [NEW] after upgrade to Kubuntu 18.04 X is not working anymore

2018-03-31 Thread Lars Liedtke
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,

On my home laptop I upgraded my Kubuntu 17.10 to 18.04 beta1. Since then
I have problems starting an X-Session in general and the only fallback I
came to was installing Gnome and trying with Wayland, which gave me at
least a GUI Interface.

Additionally I can start a Plasma Session under Wayland with GDM enabled
but neither with lightdm or sddm.

Still no X-Session with Ubuntu Desktop or Plasma.

I am fully aware of the conditions of a beta install but maybe this
problem may help fixing a possible bug. It is totally possible as well
that I made a mistake. But before doing a clean install, I wanted to put
the problem here.

The behaviour with X is that it is not started properly so i only see a
black screen. I can log into consoles via + + and
everything else seems to be loaded properly.

Also I am happy to provide more information and data, if you tell me
what you need. Running "startx" in a console complains that no screen is
connected.

Maybe someone can help me debug.

Cheers
Lars

[Bug 1760349] [NEW] Cannot log in to public open Wifi connection because not being redirected to login site

2018-03-31 Thread Till Sachau
Public bug reported:

I have noticed that Kubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) does not login to
public Wifi hotspots without wifi security, that require login through a
web page. I don't know if this is reproducible on arbitrary public
networks, or only on the few I tried.

The solution was as follows:
- Create file /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/20-connectivity-debian.conf (you'll
need root or sudo).
- Add the following lines as recommended by Guruprasad
(https://www.lguruprasad.in/blog/2015/07/21/enabling-captive-portal-detection-in-gnome-3-14-on-debian-jessie/):

[connectivity]
uri=http://network-test.debian.org/nm
response=NetworkManager is online
interval=300

- Restart the network manager with service network-manager restart (will
need sudo or root again).

This is a very annoying and unnecessary default behavior it seems. Maybe
a good idea to fix it.

[Bug 1756238] Re: gdebi-gtk broken in 18.04 error: unable to read filedescriptor flags

2018-03-31 Thread Martin Wimpress
Looks like 91_keep_fds.patch was something that never made it upstream
when originally added.

vte (1:0.25.91-0ubuntu4) maverick; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/91_keep_fds.patch:
- Update and return patch that hadn't been applied upstream (LP: #620297)

[Bug 1755106] Re: /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/media-keys/custom-keybindings/ fails to load

2018-03-31 Thread Péter Prőhle
Today the problem occurred again, so I could test /usr/lib/gnome-
settings-daemon/gsd-media-keys. Do I understand correctly that in a
terminal running bash inside, I simply give this /usr/lib/gnome-
settings-daemon/gsd-media-keys fully qualified path as a command?

The result is that it does not return to bash prompt, and initially
gives no kind of messages. However, when I try any of the custom
keystrokes, or any of the usual but overridden keystrokes, then I get
the followings:

$ /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-media-keys
