[Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"

2019-03-17 Thread Lars Melin
usb_modeswitch did once upon a time check that a driver bound to the
dongles interface(s) and if not then it did a modeprobe of the option
serial driver. If it still didn't get option to bind then it added the
dongles usb id to option's new_id and if the driver bound then it asked
the user to report the usb id to usb kernel developers so that it could
be properly added to the driver.

There were too often conflicts between usb_modeswitch's driver loading and the
kernels driver loading so it was decided after discussions with among others
one of the modemmanager's developers to completely remove from usb_modeswitch
any check for driver binding and forcing of driver binding.
In short: usb_modeswitch is a userland switching utility which should leave the
task of loading drivers to the kernel and not interfere with that.

The driver checking/loading function was removed almost 3 years ago:

"Version 2.4.0, 2016/06/12
ATTENTION: All ad-hoc driver binding code (using new_id driver attribute)
removed - was a potential source of side effects and should now be
obsoleted by good kernel support for modems"

It seems that canonical doesn't agree and has re-introduced the driver
checking/loading in their own implementation of later usb_modeswitch
version.

Regarding switching of E3531 with usb id 12d1:1f01 I can say that it is done
with the linux switch message given by Huawei. They intend this device to
become 12d1:14dc with a direct ethernet interface and no serial interfaces.
Huawei has different switch messages for Windows, Mac, linux, and since a few
years back also for Android.
Early Huawei Android builds did only have support for ppp serial dial-up so the
Android switch message brought up serial interfaces instead of net interfaces.
usb_modeswitch is also used in Android and has the Android switch message
included from version 2.5.1.
usb_modeswitch can globally use the Android message by setting
"HuaweiAltModeGlobal" in usb_modeswitch.conf or individually per modem by
setting "HuaweiAltMode" in the modem config file.
usb_modeswitch will continue to use the linux switch message for all Huawei
modems, it is up to the end user to either select the right modem for his
requirement (which often is serial ports for SMS operation) or to drop a new
modem config file into /etc/usb_modeswitch.d which will override the one
provided in /usr/share/usb_modeswitch.

[Bug 1820560] [NEW] color picker hex# field only takes 5 out of 6 chars

2019-03-17 Thread ph
Public bug reported:

>From the highlight color button on the toolbar, you Left click on custom
color. That opens a window called "Pick a color". If you select the hex
number field (which was filled with "ff"), and you type in 6
characters, it only takes the first 5 characters because it has still
left the last "f". It ignores your last character entered, no matter
what character you enter, and it leaves the f in the place of the 6th
character. So then you have to take another step to select the "f" and
delete it, or to put the cursor at the end of the line, backspace over
the f, and enter whatever was supposed to be the 6th character.

What also happens is if you move a window the busy cursor halts. But
this is just temporary, opening a new window causes it to start up
again. So only way to really stop is too log out.

[Bug 1820490] Re: i find them while xdiagnose

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1820230] Re: spotify (snap) starts in fullscreen without windows decorations

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

It looks like gnome-shell is generally doing the right thing. It notices
an app is trying to place itself over the full screen and accepts that
as a old-style fullscreen request. Nothing unusual there. Gnome Shell is
behaving correctly for a window manager.

The only problem here is that there's no way to escape (restore and
resize) such automatic fullscreening in gnome-shell. But also I think
that's normal. I'm not aware of any window managers that do offer that.

So I don't think it's reasonable to ask for a gnome-shell enhancement to
work around this problem. It's Spotify's fault for firstly suggesting it
wants to be fullscreen and then not remembering that it requested
fullscreen.

[Bug 1793595] Re: [radeon] Shell freezes, mostly when running chrome or editing text files.

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I just noticed you said "Cannot access the system remotely as well.",
which suggests a kernel problem.

Looking at your original kernel log you have:

[ 15.680794] [drm:si_dpm_set_power_state [radeon]] *ERROR* si_enable_smc_cac
failed
[ 15.712514] [drm:si_dpm_set_power_state [radeon]] *ERROR* si_enable_smc_cac

...
[ 22.768100] radeon_dp_aux_transfer_native: 242 callbacks suppressed
...
[ 33.988147] radeon_dp_aux_transfer_native: 326 callbacks suppressed

and in your most recent system log you have this error repeating again:

Dec 03 09:44:34 avi kernel: [drm:si_dpm_set_power_state [radeon]] *ERROR*
si_enable_smc_cac failed
Dec 03 09:44:34 avi kernel: [drm:si_dpm_set_power_state [radeon]] *ERROR*
si_enable_smc_cac failed

While those messages might be harmless, they may also hint at a fault in
the kernel graphics driver.

I also encountered this issue after upgrading to 4.4.0-143 on xenial

attempting many solutions including updating to the latest version of
virtual box I ended up here. My /var/log/vbox-setup.log was bascially
identical to arQon's. After rebooting into 4.4.0-142 everything is

[Bug 1763892] Re: 144Hz/120Hz monitor but mutter seems to cap rendering at 60FPS

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I forgot to mention that multi-monitors still won't work properly in
Wayland sessions. You'll only get the speed of the slowest monitor. But
a fix for that is coming eventually:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/73

If you experience the problem in Xorg then that's a new problem. But if
true then we could reword bug 1730460 to include that, and discuss it
there.

Remember this bug is closed for Gnome Shell per comment #126.

But I understand that maybe some people are still experiencing similar

problems with laptop display switching then please open a new bug by

[Bug 201391] Re: Headset volume control doesn't change headset volume

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It's been over 9 years since this bug was closed.

So if you'd like to discuss any problems you're still having today then
it would be better to open a new bug by running:

[Bug 1820368] Re: x

2019-03-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1819132] Re: DNS is broken after reboot or suspend

2019-03-17 Thread Rocko
Marking as fix released because it looks like this was resolved by this
morning's update (by a reconfiguration of systemd? dpkg.log says that it
installed version 240-6ubuntu2, but it also says that this version has
been installed since the 13th of March).

/etc/resolv.conf now contains "nameserver 127.0.0.53".

[Bug 1624644] Re: By default settings unattended-upgrade does not automatically remove kernel packages that become unused in conjunction with updating by other software

2019-03-17 Thread Jarno Suni
rbalint, in the output there is some oddity:
"Keeping auto-removable linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic package(s) because
it would also remove the following packages which should be kept in this step:
libpam-systemd libsystemd0 libudev1 systemd systemd-sysv udev

Removing linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic (4.8.0-54.57~16.04.1) ..."

So it says it is keeping linux-image-extra-4.8.0-54-generic and right
thereafter it is removing the same package.

but it seems unlikely that this is going to lead to happiness. How are

[Bug 1820525] Re: Pdfshuffler is about to disappear

2019-03-17 Thread Tom Reynolds
As discussed on IRC:
A package being dropped as unsupportable isn't really a functional bug (which
you'd file a bug report on). According to
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=917831 'pdfshuffler' is going
to be replaced by an actively maintained fork, 'pdfarranger', in Debian. This
also applies to Ubuntu 'disco' (will be 19.04), where 'pdfshuffler' is now a
transitional package depending on newly introduced 'pdfarranger' package (which
depends on current / supportable python libraries).

I haven't been able to boot with no params with 1.13. bios, but now I
can make it work with:

"text radeon.modeset=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 mem_encrypt=off
ivrs_ioapic[4]=00:14.0 ivrs_ioapic[5]=00:00.2 rcu_nocbs=0-7 idle=nomwait

With these params everything works fine - gpu, suspend/resume, touchpad,
function keys, normal cpu usage

[Bug 1818772] Re: [disco-proposed] On the Boot splash screen, Grub does not show the 5.0 kernel installed.

2019-03-17 Thread Tom Reynolds
I can't reproduce any issues with grub2 booting off a fully updated (as
of today) 19.04 amd64 pre-release in BIOS boot mode.

Some of what was posted previously was about boot issues with
(apparently incompatible) non Ubuntu versions of Grub 1 (0.99), probably
installed by one of the other OS installed by the OP. On a multi-boot
system, only Ubuntu's Grub2 boot code will be supported *here*, which
apparently was not used.

[Bug 1611945] Re: /dev/disk/by-path not properly populated for (e)SATA port multiplier disks

2019-03-17 Thread thulle
I saw the discussion in zfs-discuss and read a bit for fun.

To answer some old questions from what i understood from linked resources:
This bug/deficiency seem to make it impossible to see all drives behind a port
multiplier when using links in /dev/disk/by-path/ but not other links, making
the drives unadressable by slot.

This can be fixed by patching systemd. Why this haven't been done seems to be
summarized here:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/3943#issuecomment-404996399

The patch submitted here seems to be outdated, later one found here:
https://github.com/sitsofe/systemd/commit/ee26c33ede684138ba9fdc7f286bfa402860aff3

IMHO, the easiest (but not easy) way to add this patch in Ubuntu on your
own would be to create an PPA and rebuild systemd from ubuntu with the
patch added. Note that you'll be responsible for keeping your systemd-
package up to date on your own and that changes can be made upstream
that breaks the patch.

It could be added in the official ubuntu package of systemd, but I'm
guessing they don't want to add a patch that adds a naming scheme for
drives that later might change when the proper fix mentioned last in the
first link is implemented.

[Bug 1611945] Re: /dev/disk/by-path not properly populated for (e)SATA port multiplier disks

2019-03-17 Thread rich painter
I have this same problem for some time and on the latest update too.
all of the discs affected are used in a zfs zpool.

uname -a
Linux PEI-Server 4.15.0-45-generic #48~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 29 18:03:48

cat /sys/module/zfs/version
0.7.5-1ubuntu16.4

I have a total of 6 discs split equally across 2 esata port multipliers.
All are part a a single raidz2 pool.

Zillions of these errors:
Mar 3 22:04:48 PEI-Server systemd[1]:

 and
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1c.2/:07:00.0/ata3/host2/target2:1:0/2:1:0:0/block/sde/sde1

I have lots of detailed data if anyone wants to see it.

It would REALLY be nice if a fix trickled down soon...

thanks

[Bug 1690085]

2019-03-17 Thread to_load
I assume there is several (at least two) similar problems that cause
spontaneous system hangs.

One of them is mwait bug listed in AMD errata. Looks like idle=halt is
partial workaround for this. But, as said in AMD community forum, guest
OS in virtual machine may execute mait instruction and provoke this bug.
Luckily, mwait is not common for user-space applications (still not sure
about that).

Another is power supply problem. This may be caused by unsupported PSU (no 0A
12V) or unsuitable power subsystem on motherboard. This may be partially
(again!) solved by BIOS "typical current idle" option or disabling C6 states by
.py script.
IMO this bios option may be implemented not properly in some mobos firmware.
Looks like it only "says to OS" do not use C-states, but does not prevent deep
sleep on hw level. Here we got [Firmware Bug]: ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not
supported by HW (0x0) in dmesg and problem persists.

Have read some forums with assures of completely stable Ryzen systems
work under Linux without any tweks. So not really too many systems
affected by mwait and PSU lockups. I think some combination of factors
may provoke this behavior. Mobo+PSU, memory latency (why not?) or some
vendor-provided bios config.

Also in some cases these two problems may appear together.
Obviously, segfaults or amdgpu crashes is not related to this bug.

PS:Sorry for my bad English.

[Bug 1690085]

2019-03-17 Thread alfie
The PSU problem sounds like a weak excuse from AMD or may they are
talking about very very bad 10 dollars units.

The BIOS options "typical/low current" doesn't seems to change the c-states set
up by the kernel routines here. With any selection, I always end up with
c0 POLL
c1 ACPI HLT
c2 ACPI IOPORT 0x414

as you can see with cpufreq cpupower idle-info or
/usr/src/linux/tools/power/x86/turbostat/turbostat -n1

That happens because the firmware already informed the kernel
mwait/monitor cannot be used for c-states.

If idle=halt is used, there is no c-state management and the idl
instruction is used to put a core in idle mode.

I think it is the hyper treading handling that is somehow bugged,
somewhere.

Also note that many ryzen users overclock their machine and if you
overclock, you have to c-state problems at all.

[Bug 1820536] Re: print dialog cups "advanced tab" missing in qt5/kf5 based applications

2019-03-17 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1776173 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776173

The duplex settings were added in qtbase 5.9.5+dfsg-0ubuntu2, which is
currently available in bionic-proposed.

The whole "Advanced" tab is impossible to backport. If you look at
openSUSE, they have not just patch 0010, but also a lot of patches
related to printing:

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/openSUSE:Leap:15.0/libqt5-qtbase

These patches change the code completely and also change (private)
API/ABI, so they do not meet the Ubuntu stable release criteria.

[Bug 1782709] Re: Updating systemd kills network on bionic

2019-03-17 Thread DEXTER
Some more info:
 - The machine is a Virtualbox ubuntu bionic, and I have a snapshot before the
upgrade, so I can reproduce it
 - I'm using ifconfig instead of netplan, because I need a ppp interface (for
pppoe)
 - I have an /etc/network/interfaces file
 - it seems that the interface through which I'm using ssh loses it's IP
address (defined in the interfaces file as static)
 - I also did these after installing bionic:
"systemctl disable systemd-networkd-wait-online.service
systemctl mask systemd-networkd-wait-online.service" because it was holding up
the boot process for a long period

[Bug 1819915] Re: s2disk freezes at saving image to disk (hibernation)

2019-03-17 Thread Matheus
Another thing I noticed is that changing from one DE to another does
change nothing, Gnome or KDE same issue.

A weird non tech way to describe it, which is what I can tell, Is that it seems
like when my system haven't used more than 2gb of memory yet, I am able to
hibernate and restore how many times I want. Otherwise If I try to hibernate
when more than 2 gb are used this problem happens.

Also if I open a heavy program like chrome, using more than 2gb and
close it quickly, with the system going back to less than 2gb usage, I
have the same problem back again. So it really seems like after I used
something that is about 2gb this error happens, even if I close
everything, exit xorg and go back to a 500 mb ram usage and try
hibernating from the tty.

I tried recreating my swap partition, which has 16gb of space, so nothing
against 2 gb?!?... but nothing fixes this. By the way I have less than 16 gb of
space left on my home partition and / partition but I really don't think this
would affect anything since I'm not using those.

Honestly can't find any more logical explaining for this or way to
troubleshoot now.
