[Bug 1853414] [NEW] Bogus run-time error about wrong endianness for boost-numpy

2019-11-20 Thread Syncopated
Public bug reported:

This is about an upstream bug in Boost 1.67:
https://github.com/boostorg/python/issues/209

The bug has been fixed by this merged PR:
https://github.com/boostorg/python/pull/218/commits/0fce0e589353d772ceda4d493b147138406b22fd

The PR made it to upstream version 1.68 but Ubuntu is still using 1.67.

Can there be a minor version upgrade (libboost-numpy1.67.1?)
incorporating a patch containing the one-line change in the PR?

[Bug 1761606] Re: Two Wi-Fi network applets appear after logging back into live-usb Lubuntu 18.04 session.

2019-11-20 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
In Ubuntu MATE 18.04, this happens in e.g. one out of 10 logins (not
just in the Live CD).

We tried uninstalling the indicator-application package in 500+ schools.
The problem never occurred again.

If this can't be pinpointed, maybe Ubuntu MATE and Lubuntu can just
avoid including the indicator-application package in the default
installations.

Isn't that about extracting the application menus and putting them in
the panel? This isn't used by default, right?

** Also affects: ubuntu-mate-settings (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

Once again, egg on my face. I'm a complete ass. Laugh at the ass and

[Bug 1852420] Re: /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log reports millions of nvme errors

2019-11-20 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Would it be possible for you to do a kernel bisection?

First, find the last good -rc kernel and the first bad -rc kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the good version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the bad version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If the issue still happens,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the
regression.

This can be improved by killing indicator-application-service instead of
fcitx. However, nothing can be done from the GUI.

If I understand correctly, the needed fix here is to modify /usr/sbin
/make-ssl-cert to add a --expiration-days=N option that passes the value
to the -days arg in the last invocation of `openssl req`, maybe similar
to what I've sketched in the attached (completely untested) patch?

On a fully updated Ubuntu 19.10, I feel most of my problems occur, when
copying from a Wayland application, and pasting to an XWindow
application. Most of the time, that doesn't work at all.

As an example. Running my Firefox as a native Wayland application, I am
experiencing problems copying a URL and pasting it into Chrome.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2019-11-20 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1853369/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1853090] Re: failed to build DKMS fwts-efi-runtime-dkms/19.11.00 against v5.4-rc1 and on: numerous compile errors

2019-11-20 Thread Colin Ian King
I propose that something like the following patch could be used to skip
over dkms builds for fwts if the kernel module is built-in to a specific
kernel version.

I've not tried this in a final a packaged version of fwts, so I'm not
100% sure it will work, but it's a starting point.

[Bug 1851542] Re: autopkgtest fails due to aspell SRU

2019-11-20 Thread dann frazier
The autopkgtests for bionic and disco also continue to fail w/ the
upload in -proposed. However, as was the case for eoan, the failure that
the uploads for this bug targeted has gone away. The remaining failures
appear to be a regression(s) introduced by previous security uploads.
I've reported bug 1853383 for the one I can readily reproduce.

[Bug 1795703] Re: Ubuntu Dock gets replaced with a standard GNOME one after a while

2019-11-20 Thread nathanl...@gmail.com
This seems to only happen to me after a period of inactivity, as i've
only seen the dock disappear after logging back in from the lock screen.
I can't reproduce it, other than to say it happens about once every week
or two.

My go-to solution was to log out and log in again, though I can confirm
that Yeou Sunn's workaround of "alt+f2" and "r" works. I'll be doing
that for now until a fix is found.

[Bug 1853383] [NEW] autopkgtest regression in test_add_proc_info

the subsequent uploads to fix a regression, but it still fails[2].

2019-11-20 Thread Colin Ian King
Basically, don't build the dkms module if it's already provided as a
kernel module, e.g. check if

/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/firmware/efi/test/efi_test.ko

exists, if so, don't build a kernel module with dkms.

Steps to reproduce:

Version: 68.1.2 (64-bit) Linux
Open Thunderbird, read, respond, write new messages.

Actual results:

Depending on the session activity, lots of files left in /tmp. Typical files:
nscopy.tmp
nsemail-1.eml
nsemail-2.eml
nsemail.eml
nsemail.html
nsmail.tmp

These files are owner read/write only. If left alone, more such files
accumulate during each Thunderbird session. Not a priority, just
somewhat sloppy, like a memory leak.

Expected results:

Those files should have been deleted upon each session close.

Sorry about the double, I thought I was editing the message so you'd know the

The four nsmail*.tmp files are all copies of the same jpg image that I sent in
one message as a lone attachment. In examining the other files, I noticed that
I need to change my habit of replying to a recent message, then changing the
subject and deleting the old content to create a new message, suffering from
congenital indolence as I oftentimes do. I found huge reference lists of
previous threads in the header. I was under the impression that a new Subject
meant a new message. Apparently you can change the subject in any reply and it
remains a reply to the previous message. Perhaps it is that habit that leaves
behind the /tmp files?
The nscopy files are all the same message in text and html format with the
attached image in mime format.
I cleared ns*, opened t-bird, sent myself a test message, then closed t-bird.
These four are all from that message, in both txt and html format.
nscopy.tmp
nsemail.eml
nsemail.html
nsmail.tmp

I download the latest tarball, extract the Thunderbird folder, then move
it to /usr/lib64. Would installing via a package manager change the
result?

Me too, under controlled shutdown in Windows. However my %tmp% also has
a couple hundred files over a period of a few months so there must be
circumstances where cleanup doesn't happen.

Anyway, among the open bugs we have https://mzl.la/2MGutmu and the last

[Bug 1853090] Re: failed to build DKMS fwts-efi-runtime-dkms/19.11.00 against v5.4-rc1 and on: numerous compile errors

2019-11-20 Thread Colin Ian King
It will not pass the build process with newer kernel headers and older
incompatible versions of gcc. So I guess we are down to it should not be
built against recent kernels. I reluctantly think that is the only way
forward. But, this said, it is not a driver issue, or a kernel issue,
it's an issue with using an older toolchain building a driver against
headers that won't build with that version of gcc (if I am correct on
that assertion).

[Bug 1853382] [NEW] Disco update: upstream stable patchset 2019-11-20

2019-11-20 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1853381] Re: Using HDMI output breaks displayport permanently

2019-11-20 Thread Shevek
Additional notes:
* When I enable the HDMI port, I used --mode 1920x1080 --scale-from 2840x2160
* I have just discovered that I _can_ reenable the DP using nvidia-settings,
but ONLY as a mirror-of or BELOW my existing laptop screen. What I cannot do is
make the DP screen be ABOVE my laptop screen. It's as if using the HDMI port
(with scale-from?) has locked the laptop screen to X coordinates (0,0).

And for the full LOL, `xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --mode 3840x2160 --below
DP-1` works, but `xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --above eDP-1-1`
did not.

[Bug 1853381] [NEW] Using HDMI output breaks displayport permanently

2019-11-20 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

If I have a thunderbolt monitor, it works fine-ish, most of the time,
and I can connect, disconnect, etc.

If EVER I connect to an HDMI monitor, it connects and will disconnect,
but then displayport NEVER WORKS AGAIN until I reboot the laptop.

After using and disconnecting HDMI:

shevek@starling:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 32767 x 32767
DP-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

   2560x1600 59.9959.97
   2560x1440 59.9959.9959.9659.95
(etc)

BUT:
+ xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --above eDP-1-1
xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)

Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)

and then the screen goes blank. And now I have to reboot again, which is kind
of meh because of #1852797 the laptop crashes every day or two anyway on 19.10
where it didn't crash on 19.04 but ... still a pain.

This bug existed on 19.04 with nvidia-driver-418 and exists in nvidia-

Currently using a Dell Inspiron 3835 with a ryzen 2500u with 8gb of ram

on asus x505za also running 2500u.

I checked the log files and there was this error.

I think it may be a problem with gnome since I was running lubuntu
before and there's no hang whatsoever when using that.
