[Bug 1844834] Re: open-vm-tools 11.0.0 released

2019-12-02 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
FYI this went into crash reports for ID 1603513cf3aef02631bc0136e990c10f5c891c50
I analyzed and filed [1], for now please do NOT release it to Bionic and Disco
yet.
After we have discussed (and maybe fixed) upstream there might be a new spin on
this.

I don't think we have to fully roll back the Eoan version yet wit han extra
upload.
Just keep it at the low phasing it is (or set phasing back to 0% if that is
possible?). Once we know more we can make better decisions then how to continue.

With apport details not being provided, it's harder to tell

However this is not Ubuntu, thus have Mint changed anything in the stack
at that level that changes things?

[Bug 1854883] Re: laptop sleeps when screen clsed during shutdown

2019-12-02 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1854883/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1854892] [NEW] Opening external drive in disks shows wrong disk

2019-12-02 Thread Finn Bear
Public bug reported:

When I navigate to the directory of my "Data" internal drive, right
click, choose properties, and click "open in disks," the disk
application opens to the wrong disk (the first one in the list, my nvme
boot ssd). Additionally, I don't see the drive in the side bar (like
18.04).

If I had tried to do this with a flash drive I was planning to reformat,
I might have accidentally formatted my boot drive.

[Bug 1854891] [NEW] Editing crontab by script doesn't work

2019-12-02 Thread Jeremy Phelps
Public bug reported:

I wrote a script to automatically edit a crontab across a fleet of machines.
The script works something like this:

   ex $crontab << EOT

   wq!
   EOT

I set EDITOR to point at that script, and then run "crontab -e", only to
find that the program says "No modification made". I carefully debugged
my script to ensure that it was actually making a change. In spite of
the change, crontab(1) claims "No modification made" and rejects the
changes.

After other attempts at troubleshooting failed, I delved into the source
code. The "No modification made" error is reported after "crontab"
checks the file modification time, which it does both before and after
calling $EDITOR.

The check is done like this:

if (statbuf.st_mtime == fsbuf->st_mtime) {
return 1; /* No change to file */
}

According to the stat(2) Linux man page, "st_mtime" is actually a macro
defined as:

#define st_mtime st_mtim.tv_sec

So it seems that the problem is that editing a file by script takes less
than a second, and this method of checking a file's modification time
only provides 1-second resolution.

It seems that attempting to move away from using the st_mtime field
would introduce some portability problems, since Linux and MacOS X
provide incompatible ways to get subsecond precision on a file's
modification time.

In the meantime, I will call sleep(1) from my script to ensure that
enough time passes that crontab can see that there was a change.

[Bug 1853643] Re: Menu Fails to Launch Applications

2019-12-02 Thread Gurjus Bhasin

Menu should accept keyboard input in search field to locate applications
by name.

Budgie menu opens and closes after clicking on an application but does
not launch the application selected. Also, application search field at
top of menu does not accept keyboard input.

Strange, not reproducible here. Can you try different keyboard locales
and a fresh install (live USB, VM, etc?)

[Bug 1854887] [NEW] cifs: DFS Caching feature causing problems traversing multi-tier DFS setups

2019-12-02 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/

[Impact]

There is a problem where kernels 5.0-rc1 and onwards cannot mount a
multi tier cifs DFS setup, while kernels 4.20 and below can mount the
share fine.

The DFS tiering structure looks like this:

Domain virtual DFS (i.e. \\company.com\folders\share)
|-- Domain controller DFS (i.e. \\regional-dc.company.com\folders\share)
|-- Regional DFS Server (i.e. \\regional-dfs.company.com\folders\share)
|-- Actual file server (i.e. \\regional-svr.company.com\share)

On the 5.x series kernels, after getting the DFS referrals list through
to the Regional DFS Server, which responds with the correct
server/share, instead of going to the Actual file server, the kernel
backtracks from the Regional DFS Server back to the Domain controller
and requests the share there. Of course, this share does not exist on
the Domain controller, as it only exists on the Actual file server, and
the connection dies.

We have collected a packet capture, and the flow looks like this:

4.18.0-21-generic Ubuntu kernel - Good

Hostrequest/response

Domain controller / Domain DFS Root company.com\folders
Domain controller / Domain DFS Root Referral List
Regional Domain Controller / Domain DFS Rootstart convo

Status code returned 0xc225 STATUS_NOT_FOUND
fs/cifs/smb2maperror.c: Mapping SMB2 status code 0xc225 to POSIX err -2
// mounting the share fails shortly after

This has quite a big impact to customers who need to mount their multi-
tier DFS mounts, as they have to remain on the 4.15 bionic kernel and
cannot use the HWE kernel for their machines.

[Fix]

After some debugging, I narrowed the cause down to a new DFS caching
feature introduced in 5.0-rc1. I started a discussion with the upstream
maintainer of cifs, which you can read here:

https://lore.kernel.org/linux-cifs/05aa2995-e85e-
0ff4-d003-5bb08bd17...@canonical.com/T/#u

This discussion resulted in the below upstream commit, which was merged
in the 5.5 development window:

[Bug 1854883] [NEW] laptop sleeps when screen clsed during shutdown

2019-12-02 Thread Francis Merlino
Public bug reported:

os: Kubuntu 19.10 - fresh install, all packages up to date as of 2 December 2019
hardware: Thinkpad T470 i7-75000, 8GB RAM

when the laptop is shutdown, if I close the lid before finishing
powering down the laptop will suspend rather than shutdown. When I next
open the lid, the laptop wakes and finishes shutting down.

was not doing this with any release from Kubuntu 18.04 - 19.04.

Thanks. Could you please consider accepting a fixed patch rather than closing
the bug as won't fix?
While this is not an issue with traditional loaders, users of WSL would
certainly appreciate strip not generating binaries crashing there.

[Bug 1854882] [NEW] Spectacle crashes Kwin

2019-12-02 Thread Jeff
Public bug reported:

While using the shortcut Super+PrtScrn the screen shot is taken and Kwin
immediately crashes. I can get Kwin back by running Kwin via Krunner and
proceed with what I am doing. Only pressing PrtScrn and letting
Spectacle launch has crashed Kwin as well but I was only able to
replicate that once. System has package updates which may have fixed the
problem.

[Bug 1854881] Re: Boot hang after updating and setting up Iscsi with 4.15.0-72 generic kernel

2019-12-02 Thread William
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic

** Description changed:

  Hi All,

  Host Server - Dell PowerEdge R630, Dual Xeon E5-2650 v4, 768GB Memory,
  ESX 6.5.0

  I created a VM with 1vCPU, 2GB Memory, 16GB Hard drive.

I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04.2 (latest ISO I had on hand), installed
  fine.

I then ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade... upgrade failed as repos
were out of date. I then ran do-distribution-upgrade, ran through
everything and it appears to work.

--I don't want to mislead anyone - I can't remember if I rebooted or not
  at this point.

After this, I setup an Iscsi initiator to an external target, added to
fstab, formatted and confirmed all working.

  I then rebooted, and... nothing!

No ping, no ssh or anything... Control + Alt + Del did not work, looked
like it had frozen. The last line was starting SSH, but the previous
line was the Iscsi initiator. At this point, I figured network is down
and ISCSI is hanging as it can't connect/maybe I messed up the ISCSI
  mount.

I then went to GRUB and did advanced, I did the recovery console for
kernel 4.15.0-72 generic which lead to a kernel panic:
  https://snipboard.io/YCOZwv.jpg

I then went through the options again and selected 4.4.0-62 generic, and
it booted fine, and after about 2 seconds at the recovery menu, further
ISCSI related text came up: https://snipboard.io/ALZcsF.jpg

I went to the shell as root, deleted the line from fstab, and rebooted,
but, it hang again at the same point.

I then went to advanced, booted normally to 4.4.0-62 generic, and, it
went through without any issue what so ever.

Messing around with kernels puts me out of my depth... happy to give
further info or do more diagnostics if required, however, due to it
working in a different kernel and nothing out of the ordinary - I
believe this to be a bug.

[Bug 1854881] Re: Boot hang after updating and setting up Iscsi with 4.15.0-72 generic kernel

2019-12-02 Thread William
Sorry, I'm new here - I was searching for related bugs to not create a
duplicate and it appears to automatically got the intel microcode tag...
I can't confirm it is related or not to that.

p.s. I put the Iscsi target back in fstab, rebooted and selected the old
kernel - it booted and mounted without any issue at all.

[Bug 1854881] [NEW] Boot hang after updating and setting up Iscsi with 4.15.0-72 generic kernel

2019-12-02 Thread William
Public bug reported:

Hi All,

Host Server - Dual Xeon E5-2650 v4, 768GB Memory, ESX 6.5.0
