[Bug 1860483] Re: [nouveau] screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-01-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, thanks. Assuming the bug isn't just hiding and wouldn't reappear
later in 18.04.3 if used long enough, then this implies a fix exists
somewhere in the HWE packages (which are the difference between 18.04
fully updated and 18.04.3 fully updated).

The only two sets of HWE packages I can think of that affect graphics
are Xorg and the kernel.

Firstly Xorg: Does the bug occur if you log into "Ubuntu on Wayland"
instead?

Secondly the kernel: Does the bug occur if you install the latest test
kernel packages from here? https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v5.5-rc7/ Remember to run 'uname -a' to check which kernel
is active.

[Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2020-01-21 Thread Oded Arbel
After an update to 5.3.0-26-generic (and then some time passed), got a
connection fail when unsuspending.

The attached log is from journalctl -b -k with dyndbg enabled, from
suspending (Jan 21, 23:58) through complete failure of the connection at
09:08:16 and a disconnect and reconnect that succeeded.

[Bug 1860510] Re: ubuntu is not installing

2020-01-21 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by bad ISO download,
corrupted install media, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and
you'll see messages like these :-

Jan 22 06:25:53 ubuntu kernel: [ 689.036701] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Jan 22 06:25:53 ubuntu kernel: [ 689.036707] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x306bd2f

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a bad ISO or
faulty device (inc.r bad write-to-device). If you believe I'm in error,
please leave a comment explaining why and change the status back to
'New'. I suggest you verify your ISO download, and use the 'check disc
for defects' option to validate your media before install to ensure a
good download & write.

Possibly useful : https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-
verify-ubuntu#0 and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck (where
CD refers to your install media, be it CD, DVD, HDD, SSD, thumb-drive
etc)

[Bug 1860432] Re: juju agent fails to start on focal

2020-01-21 Thread Richard Harding
After discussing with the team and getting guidance from folks that know
systemd better we're going to write out files just to
/etc/systemd/system for our agents and mongodb services. We'll need to
also make sure that we have a series-upgrade step for OS's that get
dist-upgraded to focal and have existing agent files on disk.

[Bug 1860502] Re: nilfs2 support broken in kernel 5.3.0-26-generic #28~18.04.1-Ubuntu

2020-01-21 Thread walkerstreet
I went back to 5.3.0-24-Ubuntu and nilfs2 works fine.
Please note that support for nilfs2 is also broken with the mainline kernels in
the series 5.4.x.
Perhaps its the same change that breaks nilfs2 in 5.3.0-26-Ubuntu.

Re: [Bug 1856516] Re: Excessive memory usage by gnome-shell in 19.10

2020-01-21 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
This laptop *does* have a secondary GPU. Interesting.

I *did* test whether firing up the secondary GPU resulted in memory
increase, and it didn't seem to. *But* I don't think texture memory and
KMS framebuffers are exposed as RSS anyway, so this leak would have been
serious, but hidden.

I wonder if that also fixes the “you get a single black frame each time
the secondary GPU is powered up” bug?

Re: [Bug 1860459] Re: Got an error during installation

2020-01-21 Thread Shantanu Tavargeri
First off Paul, thanks for the prompt reply, I sincerely appreciate this -
can't imagine Apple or MS ever replying to my bugs :-)
Secondly, the installation went thru without me changing the source of
target devices - i simply tried the whole process again.
That in itself is strange but I guess, for an opensource software, its
acceptable.
Cheers!

[Bug 1860504] [NEW] software-properties-gtk fails to launch via "Additional Drivers" or via terminal

+1 Also, why is this a "Wishlist"? This is BASIC FUNCTIONALITY that has
been in linux since the 1990's! This is a functional defect.

[Bug 1860483] Re: [nouveau] screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-01-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK then. We'll treat this as a pure nouveau driver bug, because that's
the most plausible and common explanation for issues like this.

Please try booting Ubuntu 20.04 from USB (don't need to install it) and
tell us if that has the same problem: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu . You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1860500] [NEW] consider disabling apt-secure's Label check in Ubuntu

2020-01-21 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

As of 1.5 (per apt-secure(8)) apt checks and warns if a repository's
Label value changes.

This probably makes sense for Debian, where folks may be tracking stable
instead of buster, and will want to be warned when stable starts
pointing somewhere else.

However, Ubuntu doesn't have such repository aliases and, furthermore,
for PPAs, the Label value is populated from the "display name" of the
PPA. This means that a PPA owner, fixing what they may assume is a
simple typo, will require their users to take action before they
receive further updates from the PPA, which is less than ideal.

Please consider disabling this check by default in Ubuntu, if only for
PPAs.

[Bug 1846374] Re: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs

2020-01-21 Thread Krzysztof Janowicz
I am here to confirm the same issue. In my case, HOWEVER, minimizing and
pausing VLC is all it needs to generate thousands of these so rapidly
that I run into issues:

Jan 21 08:27:40 pop-os vlc.desktop[2389]: [7f4cf4092ce0] vdpau_chroma
filter error: video mixer features failure: An invalid handle value was

I am using NVIDIA 440.44 running Ubuntu 19.10 (in fact Pop!_OS) on a
GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2.

Thanks a lot for looking into this.

Re: [Bug 1860483] Re: screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-01-21 Thread Paul Collinsworth
It starts during the boot process. The display is normal from the Dell
boot/startup screen through the grub screen to the Ubuntu logo screen
and the password screens; in the instant that the top tool bar and left
tool bar come on screen, the scan/diagonal artifact appears. The system
was normal yesterday when I shut down and on boot-up this morning, it
wasn't. I did run the Ubuntu software updater yesterday, and I didn't
cycle power until shutdown last night.

[Bug 1860497] [NEW] Cannot modify screen brightness

2020-01-21 Thread Sirish Shrestha
Public bug reported:

I went through all the process that I could find regarding fixing screen
brightness on google and stackoverflow. I can see the brightness slider
on the settings move but it doesn't change the brightness. I installed
brightness-controller which did allow me to change the brightness, but
this required me to install third-party software and not be able to use
the keyshort cut for brightness that exists in most modern laptops.

I'm very new in Ubuntu.

Thank you

[Bug 1860495] [NEW] vmlinuz and initrd are missing in /boot on the Live CD

2020-01-21 Thread Cubic PPA
Public bug reported:

The vmlinuz and initrd files are missing from the Live CD.

According to `dpkg -l linux-image-*`, the package linux-
image-5.3.0-18-generic is installed.

This package should contain vmlinuz-5.3.0-18-generic.

However, /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-18-generic does not exist.

The files /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/vmlinuz.old are present, but are
broken symlinks to this file.

Furthermore the files /boot/initrd and /boot/initrd.old are broken
symlinks to the initrd.img-5.3.0-18-generic file.

[Bug 1845909] Re: [SRU] IPv6 link local address is assigned even when LinkLocalAddressing=no|ipv4

2020-01-21 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [impact]

- when a networkd interface is configured with LinkLocalAddressing=no,
- networkd still assigns a link-local address to it
+ in some situations when a networkd interface is configured with
+ LinkLocalAddressing=no, networkd still assigns a link-local address to
+ it

  [test case]

  see comment 3.

note I was only able to reproduce this at boot time; if the vlan
interface is removed (i.e. 'sudo ip l del pppoe') and then networkd
restarted, the pppoe interface is created and does not have a link-local
- address.
+ address. This is due to this bug being triggered by timing, as a vlan
+ interface is raised by the kernel when its parent interface is raised,
+ in this case by networkd itself.

  [regression potential]

- this moves the point when ipv6ll is configured; regressions would most
- likely involve failure to correctly configure an ipv6ll address when
- desired.
+ this changes how ipv6ll addresses are managed and dropped, as well as
+ changing when foreign addresses are dropped (later in config process).
+ Any regressions would likely be around incorrectly setting ipv6ll
+ addresses, or complete failure to complete interface configuration.
+
+ [scope]
+
+ this is fixed upstream by:
+
+ and also requires the upstream PR referenced in the original description:
+ upstream patch: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/13565
+
+ this is required for focal (uploaded already), eoan, and bionic. It may
+ be required for xenial.

  [other info]

- this bug was attempted to be fixed by
'debian/patches/networkd-honour-LinkLocalAddressing.patch' from upstream issue
9890, using a commit that does not correctly fix the issue and was never
accepted upstream:
-
- this SRU completely reverts that patch, and adds the correct fix which
- was merged upstream:
-
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/0e2fdb83bb5e22047e0c7cc058b415d0e93f02cf
-
- that commit is already included in Eoan so this sru is needed only for
- Disco.
+ Note, the original description below is incorrect, the issue/patch it
+ references is not enough to fix this issue.

  original description:

  --

  upstream issue: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/12886
  upstream patch: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/13565

The upstream fix will be available in systemd 244.
  Backport please. Thanks.

[Bug 1845909] Re: [SRU] IPv6 link local address is assigned even when LinkLocalAddressing=no|ipv4

2020-01-21 Thread Dan Streetman
> The header of debian/patches/lp1845909/0001-network-rename-
linux_configure_after_setting_mtu-to-linux.patch in the eoan upload
appears to be a lie;

sorry, I didn't change the patch description from upstream, where my
patch actually did only change the function name. This patch includes
some change from upstream commit
4ff296b02411bb4f0dc38f48cbab06f8645d2a08 because it is the proper way to
handle errors in the mtu handler function, but it's a large patch that I
didn't want to fully backport without reason.

Do you need me to update the patch description with that text and re-
upload, or should I separate out the specific change from the other
commit into a separate patch?

> And the statement in the description of this bug that "that commit is
already included in Eoan so this sru is needed only for Disco" is at
odds with the 5 patches related to this bug that are in this debdiff.

will update the sru template.

[Bug 1860360] Re: Installer offers updating itself to an older version

2020-01-21 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
snapd itself does not have any concept of newer/older revisions, if the
snap in the channel is different to the one installed it will be offered
as a refresh candidate. I don't really want to work around that in
subiquity.

I think what happened here was that the stable/ubuntu-20.04 branch
autoclosed and so snapd fell back to stable. Looks like someone has
opened it again.

[Bug 1860352] Re: User supplied mirror server not verified, no errors reported

2020-01-21 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
I'm surprised the install doesn't fail in this situation :(

I'm a bit leery of doing too much ahead of time validation of the mirror
but I guess we could at least do a HEAD request for the Release file or
something, would weed out most typos and silly mistakes.

[Bug 1845909] Re: [SRU] IPv6 link local address is assigned even when LinkLocalAddressing=no|ipv4

2020-01-21 Thread Steve Langasek
The header of debian/patches/lp1845909/0001-network-rename-
linux_configure_after_setting_mtu-to-linux.patch in the eoan upload
appears to be a lie; I see substantive changes to the set_mtu_handler()
function in this patch, such as dropping an early return.

And the statement in the description of this bug that "that commit is
already included in Eoan so this sru is needed only for Disco" is at
odds with the 5 patches related to this bug that are in this debdiff.

Marking incomplete, pending clarifications.

[Bug 1860490] [NEW] Eoan update: upstream stable patchset 2020-01-21

2020-01-21 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:
