[Bug 1886760] [NEW] Failure to upgrade to linux-image-5.4.0-1013-raspi
Public bug reported: Release 20.04 LTS with MATE desktop on RPi 4 with 4GB. Running with root on SSD and /boot on SD. Following "sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade", I get a series of errors starting with: Setting up linux-image-5.4.0-1013-raspi (5.4.0-1013.13) ... Failed to create symlink to vmlinuz-5.4.0-1013-raspi: Operation not permitted at /usr/bin/linux-update-symlinks line 64. dpkg: error processing package linux-image-5.4.0-1013-raspi (--configure): installed linux-image-5.4.0-1013-raspi package post-installation script subproc ess returned error exit status 1 As expected following this failure, "uname -a" gives: Linux ubuntu 5.4.0-1012-raspi #12-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 27 04:08:35 UTC 2020 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux The system works normally. I should add that there was an unusual occurrence following an upgrade a couple of weeks ago. All the files in /boot/firmware were moved to /boot and the /firmware folder removed. As the system continued working after this, I assumed that it was an intentional upgrade, but may it is related to this problem. [Bug 1886729] Re: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly
Thanks for pointing that out. I was wondering why so many adapters/cables for sale only mention "USB" while also claiming to do 4K60Hz... https://www.displayport.org/displayport-over-usb-c/ So Thunderbolt isn't required, only USB 3.1 Alternate Mode and a powerful (probably only *integrated*) GPU that can link to it. You might have hit some kind of bandwidth limitation using both USB-C ports at once. Although that doesn't make sense at Thunderbolt 3 speeds, it would make sense at USB speeds. And even if USB 3.1 speeds are being surpassed to support Alternate Mode your chipset/GPU might only know how to do it on one port at a time. So this might not be fixable... Also remember to try 'Ubuntu on Wayland' which uses a completely different code path for all this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886729 Title: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1886729/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1886729] Re: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly
Thank you for the response. I think these might fall into the third category of 'VESA is its own special story' ? I bought both the adapters from the dell configurator at the time I bought the machine. This is the part that flakes: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/accessories/apd/470-acfc The other part, that works fine It is advertised as suitable for 4K 60hz, which as you note exceeds USB3.1, but see the link from the dell site - https://www.usb.org/sites/default/files/D2T1-4%20-%20VESA%20DP%20Alt%20Mode%20over%20USB%20Type-C.pdf - it is not being carried over USB, but over alt-mode DP as far as I can tell, which should have plenty of bandwidth. The monitors are, from memory DP 1.2, requiring MST to operate - https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all- products/esuprt_display_projector/esuprt_display/dell-up2414q_user%27s %20guide_en-us.pdf confirms this. However, the mystery deepens. There are two USB-C/thunderbolt connectors on the laptop. My initial report had the combined-power-HDMI-DP one in the left connector, and the DP only one in the right connector. On a lets-be-pedantic hunch I just plugged them in on the opposite sides. With the DP only adapter plugged in on the left side, it: - reports both the MST panels - both panels autoconfigure for a combined 4k 60hz - yay! """ DP-1-8 connected 1920x2160+5760+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 527mm x 296mm 1920x2160 59.99*+ DP-1-9 connected 1920x2160+3840+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 527mm x 296mm 1920x2160 59.99*+ 1920x1200 59.88 """ With both adapters plugged in, the DP only one still on the left side, the behaviour that I originally filed the bug because of returns: """ xrandr --output DP-3 --auto --output DP-1-8 --auto --output DP-1-9 --auto xrandr: cannot find crtc for output DP-1-9 """ If I turn DP-3 off I can run the single DP monitor fine even though the adapter is plugged in. This behaviour is also consistent if I switch the power/hdmi/dp adapter to use HDMI rather than DP. What I had hoped to do is to use - ideally - all three outputs, or at worst, two external outputs and have my laptop folded flat and out of the way while I use my clicky-clacky keyboard and real mouse at my desk; being able to use either adapter, one at a time, is a dissapointment. What I think this shows so far: - each adapter works independently, with either adapter, from either USB-C port. - something I don't know enough about yet causes some resource constraint or conflict when both external screens are in use. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886729 Title: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1886729/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1764417] Re: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color.desktop
Fix: If you search your journalctl output and find an event like this: Jul 07 20:45:20 ubuntu dbus-daemon[1064]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.ColorManager' unit='colord.service' requested by ':1.168' (uid=1000 pid=23634 comm="/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-color " label="unconfined") and the timestamp coincides with the second (successful) login (look for "GNOME Shell started" if you are using Gnome), and the first (failed) login doesn't have a matching event like the above, then the following might help: # copy /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target to /etc/systemd/system/ # edit /etc/systemd/system/graphical.target, so that when you diff it against the original, you get something like this: $ diff /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/graphical.target 14c14 < Wants=display-manager.service --- > Wants=display-manager.service colord.service 16c16 < After=multi-user.target rescue.service rescue.target display-manager.service --- > After=multi-user.target rescue.service rescue.target display-manager.service > colord.service # next time you reboot the issue should be gone. Explanation: gsd-color is invoked by org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color.desktop. The event above is logged presumably when gsd-color requests the dbus service provided by colord.service. One can reasonably guess a failed login happens when gsd-color makes the request but colord hasn't yet started, so it fails and when gnome shell gets tired waiting, it kills itself. So we add colord as a dependency to be run prior to graphical.target. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1764417 Title: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color.desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1764417/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1886729] Re: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly
Hmm, it seems Thunderbolt-DisplayPort cables are pretty rare. Instead of searching for those I suggest looking for adapters that are explicitly for "Thunderbolt" and not "USB". USB 3.0 has a bandwidth of 5 Gbps USB 3.1 has a bandwidth of 10 Gbps 4K at 60Hz however requires 3840x2160x4 (33177600) bytes per frame, 265420800 bits per frame, or ~16 Gbps. USB never had a chance and at best would give you only 30Hz. So make sure your adapters are "Thunderbolt" and not "USB". Thunderbolt 3 in your laptop supports 40 Gbps which is enough for 4K at 120Hz. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886729 Title: Dell displayport YJ3Y6 adapter doesn't drive 4K screen properly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1886729/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1874075] Re: rabbitmq-server startup timeouts differ between SysV and systemd
Performing verification for rabbitmq-server in -proposed for xenial. I installed 3.5.7-1ubuntu0.16.04.4 from -proposed, and followed the instructions I wrote in comment #59. I sent a message to host 1, checked that host 1 was master, and host 2 was the slave. I shut host 1 down, and then sent a message to host 2. Host 2 became the new master. I shut host 2 down. I then started host 1 up again. The rabbit service came up in a "activating" state, due to ExecStartPost=/usr/lib/rabbitmq/bin/rabbitmq-server-wait kicking in. The rabbitmq in xenial does not offer verbose logging in its /var/log/rabbitmq/rabbit.log file about waiting for host 2, so instead I focused on the systemd service. The service will time out after 60 seconds, something I noted and explained previously, which myself and @ddstreet find to be an acceptable timeout. When the timeout occurs, /usr/lib/rabbitmq/bin/rabbitmq-server-wait exits with an error code, which causes systemd to restart the service, as expected. After a 10 second wait, the service starts in the activating state, waiting for host 2 to come up. I left the service for 15 minutes, and it timed out and restarted successfully 15 times. I then started host 2 up, and host 1 rejoined the cluster. Both hosts have the rabbit service in the active state. The package is behaving as expected on xenial, and I am happy to mark this as verified. ** Tags removed: verification-needed verification-needed-xenial ** Tags added: verification-done-xenial -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874075 Title: rabbitmq-server startup timeouts differ between SysV and systemd To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rabbitmq-server/+bug/1874075/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If you can then please try to get a Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort CABLE. The Thunderbolt end looks like USB-C but it's much more capable and can carry a full-speed DisplayPort signal. This is probably not a software bug, or if it is then probably not one we need to worry about if you just get a different cable. [Bug 1886697] Re: Xorg crash
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. 3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself. ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => xorg-server (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886697 Title: Xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1886697/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1874075] Re: rabbitmq-server startup timeouts differ between SysV and systemd
Performing verification for rabbitmq-server in -proposed for bionic. I installed 3.6.10-1ubuntu0.3 from -proposed, and followed the instructions I wrote in comment #59. I looked at /var/log/rabbitmq/host1.log, and rabbit logged its attempts to sync with host 2 every 30 seconds, for 10 tries. At this point, /usr/lib/rabbitmq/bin/rabbitmq-server-wait exits with an error code since it has timed out, and systemd then restarts the service after a 10 second delay. This is all as expected. The service comes back up in the activating state and continues to wait for host 2. I left it like this for 15 minutes, and the rabbitmq-server-wait timeout, restart and waiting all works correctly. I then started host 2 up, and host 1 rejoined the cluster. Both hosts have the rabbit service in the active state. The package is behaving as expected on bionic, and I am happy to mark this as verified. ** Tags removed: verification-needed-bionic ** Tags added: verification-done-bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874075 Title: rabbitmq-server startup timeouts differ between SysV and systemd To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rabbitmq-server/+bug/1874075/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1886732] [NEW] Shotwell fails to import and wrongly reports "photo library folder was not writable"
Public bug reported: 1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 2) shotwell package version: 0.30.10-0ubuntu0.1 3) a. I'm performing "Import from folder" from an external drive. b. This external drive is formatted as HFS+, comes from a Mac, and by default it's mounted as read-only, which is OK. c. As result of the import, some files (both photos and videos) are imported ok, while some others don't. d. For those which are not imported, the error reported in the UI is "953 photos/videos failed to import because the photo library folder was not writable", which doesn't make sense, as some others were imported. Looking further, I came to found in ~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log the following pattern: L 3733 2020-07-07 20:47:09 [WRN] BatchImport.vala:1840: Unable to perform MD5 checksum on file : Error opening file : Permission denied L 3733 2020-07-07 20:47:09 [WRN] BatchImport.vala:1405: Import failure : File write error By checking the code, I see convert_error method maps several different error codes to ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR In particular, lines 124 and 125 map IOError.PERMISSION_DENIED to ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR else if (ioerr is IOError.PERMISSION_DENIED) return ImportResult.FILE_WRITE_ERROR; But in this case, the permission denied came from the read, and not from the write. BTW: Permission denied has to do with different permissions for those files, so it's ok to not have been imported. 4) It's ok for Shotwell to fail importing files without read permission, but the error message confuses the user, which may understand Shotwell library got corrupted (as on same operation some files were imported and some others don't). A better error message could be "953 photos/videos failed to import because permission was denied to read the source files" ** Affects: shotwell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886732 Title: Shotwell fails to import and wrongly reports "photo library folder was not writable" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1886732/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1874075] Re: rabbitmq-server startup timeouts differ between SysV and systemd
Performing verification for rabbitmq-server in -proposed for focal. I know the focal package is released to -updates, but I will verify again regardless. I installed 3.8.2-0ubuntu1.1 from -proposed, and followed the instructions I wrote in comment #59. I sent a message to host 1, checked that host 1 was master, and host 2 was the slave. I shut host 1 down, and then sent a message to host 2. Host 2 became the new master. I shut host 2 down. I then started host 1 up again. When I ran "sudo systemctl status rabbitmq-server.service", rabbit was in the "activating" state, due to having its systemd service as type=notify. I let it sit on "activating" for an entire 10 minutes, at which point it timed out as planned, and the service restarted as expected after 10 seconds. The service came up again in the "activating" state as expected. I then started host 2 up again, and after it had come up, both rabbitmq-server services were in the active state, and servicing requests.
