[Bug 1890097] [NEW] [RM] sgabios - swallowed by the only user (qemu)
Public bug reported: This is the Ubuntu counterpart to Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=966598 99% copy of the Debian bug text: Package sgabios provides a variant of x86 BIOS/firmware. It was only used by qemu system emulation in Debian. The upstream development stopped many years ago, and now it is maintained within the only its user, qemu, and is built from qemu sources too (qemu-system-data package, /usr/share/qemu/sgabios.bin). Package sgabios is not useful by its own. While it does not really hurt , I guess, to keep this package in the archive, I also don't see a reason for that. sgabios has rather high numbers on the popcon data. This is because it's been suggested by qemu for quite some time. Also this package is in Depends: of libguestfs0. This is okay, since qemu-system-data provides sgabios (and conflicts with it), so the dependency is satisfied by qemu-system-data which is a required dependency of qemu-system-x86 anyway. A Debian bugreport was filed for libguestfs0 to remove the explicit dependency on sgabios, which is #966596 , but it is completely optional due to this Provides. Please consider removing sgabios from Groovy. ** Affects: sgabios (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: sgabios (Debian) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #966598 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=966598 ** Also affects: sgabios (Debian) via https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=966598 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890097 Title: [RM] sgabios - swallowed by the only user (qemu) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sgabios/+bug/1890097/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1889998] Re: Settings > Power suggests wifi "can" be turned off not "will" be turned off
Oh, that's slightly disappointing. Feel free to close this then. My 2-cent suggestion will be to replace those buttons completely with just a caption directing the user to other parts of the control panel. It's a bit confusing to have this button here given a more prominent section for enabling/disabling wifi and bluetooth already exists in the panel (and outside, in the indicator). If I want to file a feature request to add the feature I was looking for, should I file a separate issue? The feature being to introduce a way to disable automatically disconnecting the wifi when laptop is idle. I'll still need to figure out if this requires support from NetworkManager, or if it already exposes an interface. I'll leave this link here for anyone who wants to investigate further: https://gist.github.com/jcberthon/ea8cfe278998968ba7c5a95344bc8b55 FWIW, the feature seems to have a modest demand given 56 stars on the linked github gist. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889998 Title: Settings > Power suggests wifi "can" be turned off not "will" be turned off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1889998/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1890061] [NEW] MATE Focal "amplified" sound controls do not sync with keyboard buttons
Public bug reported: I probably have the package wrong but I was grabbing at straws :^) Just recently testing Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 release candidates and I notice that you can increase volume beyond 100% by opening Sound Settings, and once you've done that you can also increase beyond 100% using the volume "widget" in indicator-applet, but I've tested on three different sets of hardware and the volume buttons on the keyboards fail to increase beyond 100%. In fact if you're above 100% and try to bump the volume down slightly it will drop all the way to 100% and can't be increased beyond that without access to the "volume widget" so if you're viewing videos in full screen you first have to exit full screen and then readjust above 100%. So it's kind of a show-stopper for those using the OS on an HTPC. This had effected Ubuntu Bionic but was fixed in 18.10 and remains fixed in Focal - see bug #1817625. I've no idea what they changed to achieve that. Testing Focal live sessions only it seems that this same Focal bug also effects Kubuntu and Xubuntu, but they were only tested in live sessions whereas I've tested Ubuntu MATE as an installed OS. As mentioned above in Ubuntu this now does work poroperly, and also works properly using the flashback session but you must either first set "above 100%" in the Ubuntu interface or go to dconf-editor > com.ubuntu.sound, which I did also try in MATE but to no avail. [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"
VT-x status in BIOS is a red herring. Turns out modern Virtualbox won't even start VM's without VT-x. A true cause turned out to be "Windows Sandbox" feature (although I imagine for some other users the problem might be triggered by "Windows Subsystem for Linux" or anti-virus software). Here is how to reproduce it in Windows 10: 1. Enable "Windows Sandbox" (Control panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off) 2. After restart run Ubuntu live ISO in virtualbox and notice that a) VM slows to a crawl, some apps (firefox) start crashing randomly, etc b) Virtualbox shows "green turtle" icon (third from the right on the lower panel) which lists Execution engine as "native API" instead of "VT-x" c) Running "apt update" produces error mentioning "hash mismatch" d) Running workaround (mkdir -p /etc/gcrypt; echo intel-ssse3 > /etc/gcrypt/hwf.deny) fixes the apt error 3. Disable "Windows Sandbox" feature 4. After Windows restart run Ubuntu in Virtualbox and be surprised by green turtle still being there, all mentioned problems still present 5. Restart Windows second time, run Ubuntu in Virtualbox again, this time there is a blue chip instead of green turtle and apt works without workarounds Clearly it seems that gcrypt isnt at fault here and the true culprits are Windows Sandbox (possibly some other mechanism that Windows Sandbox enables) and/or Virtualbox. However the result is that new users are getting wrong impression about GNU/Linux and Ubuntu in particular (it appears slow and lags during "live" phase, fails to update after install). So I'd say Ubuntu should detect that it's being run in this broken virtualization mode, show the informative explanation to user (that their current experience isn't representative && how they can fix that) or at least enable the workaround for gcrypt (although if SSSE3 is buggy in this mode, I imagine more things are stealthily broken). Surprisingly Ubuntu still finishes installation, even with default "update from internet" option enabled. After installation, "apt update" still produces the same "hash mismatch" errors though. Enabling workaround and rerunning "apt update" predictably finds many more (292 right now) packages that are to be upgraded. This fail-open behavior (installer and updater ignoring the errors) will no doubt lead to subtle bug down the road for the users as well (I'd argue that it's a security issue as well - users not being informed about security patches they're missing). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890006 Title: Hash mismatch on "apt update" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1890006/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1852001] Re: KDE GUI freeze on high disk IO
@ccheney Regardless if my crashes are gone, my experience is that having a swap file in recent Linux is deadly. If Linux starts swapping only a little then it's hardly usable any more. I believe this is because of the algorithm that decides which pages to remove from memory. Your observation with 50% RAM could be related to VMLIM. VMLIM says how much of the RAM may be used for programs. By default this is half your RAM. The other half is for cache and buff only. (as I understood, this may be inaccurate). [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"
Here is apport stuff, and there are more news. I confirmed that the problem was in the gcrypt. More precisely, disabling SSSE3 fixes this issue (echo intel-ssse3 > /etc/gcrypt/hwf.deny). The Virtualbox (running on Windows 10) was using software virtualization ("execution engine: native API") instead of VT-x - this might be the root cause (i.e. bug is in Virtualbox), but I'm helping a friend and don't have direct access to that PC, so can't test what's blocking VT-x. Hyper-V and WSL are disabled in Windows features, the person hasn't checked whether VT-x is enabled in BIOS yet.

[Bug 1890049] [NEW] global menu bar no longer supported after 20.04 upgrade
Public bug reported: 1) version: 79.0+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 500 2) Ubuntu Release : Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS 3) What I expected to happen: In Unity DE. menu bars are integrated with title bar or top panel when maximized 4) What happened instead: Menu bar doesn't integrate. Takes too much vertical space. Problematic because I have made a jump to wide screens around 2012. I guess decision makers at ubuntu still enjoy 4:3 screens and thus don't see the value in DEs that optimize vertical space. But it would be really nice to have a hand here. The current workaround is to disable the menu bar, which leaves me at the mercy of the hamburger menu. The hamburger menu is an implant from old Mobile App Design. But nowadays even Mobile App UX designers decry the Hamburger menu and in a desktop it makes little sense. Firefox is a good example because the menu bar has sections like History which are a lot richer than what's available to be accessed from the hamburger menu. It's really just not possible to have as many menu options and categories as a menu bar in a hamburger menu. And access is less efficient -> more mouse movement -> more mouse clicks. So I have to choose between wasting space unnecessarily with a menu bar that does not integrate with the top panel OR losing a lot of access to options and settings by removing the menu bar and using the hamburger menu instead. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Selección_999(052).png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890049/+attachment/5397970/+files/Selecci%C3%B3n_999%28052%29.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890049 Title: global menu bar no longer supported after 20.04 upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1890049/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected focal ** Description changed: This is a really weird bug that is happening on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Live ISO!!!) and Kali 2020.2, but not Debian 10 (so, it affects at least apt 2.0.2ubuntu0.1 and does not affect 1.8.2.1). It also only occurs on a single PC (as far as I know). All testing was done in Virtualbox and moving VM's to another PC fixed issue (without changing anything inside the VM). On running "apt update", there is an error "Hash Sum mismatch" which shows that SHA1 and SHA256 hashes differ from expected (while MD5 and file size is correct). E.g.: Hash Sum mismatch Hashes of expected file: - Filesize:314536 [weak] - SHA256:aa1c6c96b09a0c695dc475d99b407c675e564fbfe51b3e26230c6320b45666d0 - SHA1:4f438d7e0c78dfb0486f86dc0a3dba30575eb617 [weak] - MD5Sum:5269212c54feb3dceabadb66583f6778 [weak] Hashes of received file: - SHA256:f47a968e7a10aff91df8b1d3f682ce11d161ff1b17056268b9ae1c10447523b2 - SHA1:2839e062232ed234d0c04e60fe6b2a687c950e5b [weak] - MD5Sum:5269212c54feb3dceabadb66583f6778 [weak] - Filesize:314536 [weak] I ran packet capture and extracted archives which are getting verified. All of their hashes are correct (exactly as expected). It seems that calculating SHA1 and SHA256 the way APT does it produces wrong result, while running command line tools sha1sum and sha256sum (on the same PC inside the same VM) produces correct result. I wrote the minimal reproducible example (hashtest.cc) that produces output such as this: Calculating hashes same way apt does. - MD5Sum:c89b13b76197d0d554400e00e46c0740 - SHA1:f6901a4486e69a1f503401daa02b520f1b0e22ba - SHA256:9075301b3961aca23b69bf2868a18dca184b383a0ec1de35516f0a8a182c2cb6 - SHA512:7506f6f5c5d5e97f8c6ecac2489e7d6260002bd530370c6193a04620f94285dca0f5cf2bb9ead40afbd72fdf3a239349a57f81165b5b857af6ad7ddeab8da036 - Checksum-FileSize:892549 Calculating hashes through command line tools. - md5sum: c89b13b76197d0d554400e00e46c0740 - sha1sum: f6901a4486e69a1f503401daa02b520f1b0e22ba - sha256sum: 9075301b3961aca23b69bf2868a18dca184b383a0ec1de35516f0a8a182c2cb6 - sha512sum: 7506f6f5c5d5e97f8c6ecac2489e7d6260002bd530370c6193a04620f94285dca0f5cf2bb9ead40afbd72fdf3a239349a57f81165b5b857af6ad7ddeab8da036 It's in the attachment alongside with an example file that causes this hash mismatch. There's also debug.log which contains various versions, etc (although as I said, it has been verified on latest Ubuntu Live ISO). - I have a suspicion that the bug is in the gcrypt library, not apt - itself, but I haven't yet verified it. Re: [Bug 1761216] Re: Backup fails if backup destination is not mounted
Yes, it is listed in fstab and yes, I entered the path as a local storage device. All drives are SSD's connected to the computer's internal SSD ports and seen as local. The server is running XIGMANAS with SMB shares for each of the SSD's. I am not running SAMBA server. The local OS is Unbuntu 20.04 where the backup app is running and will not work if the backup drive partition is not mounted first. I can get to it by using a combination of IP address and share name, i.e. "smb:192.168.15.1/Backup Drive". Hope this helps.
