[Bug 1892663] Re: pantalla morada

2020-08-23 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

That would be great - go for it! Nick Desaulniers has a good blog post
which describes how to submit a patch [1]. I read it and then ran this
sequence of commands to generate and submit my first patch:

git commit
git format-patch HEAD~1
./scripts/checkpatch.pl
0001-ALSA-hda-realtek-Add-quirk-for-Samsung-Notebook.patch
git send-email 0001-ALSA-hda-realtek-Add-quirk-for-Samsung-Notebook.patch
./scripts/get_maintainer.pl

git send-email \
--cc-cmd='./scripts/get_maintainer.pl

0001-ALSA-hda-realtek-Add-quirk-for-Samsung-Notebook.patch

[Bug 1892668] [NEW] do-release-upgrade -d dangerously misleading output

2020-08-23 Thread James Bowery
Public bug reported:

Executing:

# do-release-upgrade -d

at one point output:

To continue please press [ENTER]

So I pressed ENTER.

I was then greeted with this opaque sentence fragment as the response to
pressing ENTER:

Inhibiting until Ctrl+C is pressed...

Then it just sat there... doing nothing obvious. Was it downloading the
updates? What was it inhibiting? How long was I supposed to ponder
these questions?

Some people confronting this Sphinx, waiting for hours, give up and
press "Ctrl+C" which, in at least one case, left his system trashed.

[Bug 1892626] Re: Random system freeze

2020-08-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. This appears to be a crash in the 'radeon'
kernel driver.

Please try a newer kernel like
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.3/amd64/
and if that doesn't solve the problem then also look in the 'Additional
Drivers' app to see if your system supports the proprietary AMD driver instead.

[Bug 1866194] Re: External audio device shows up in the sound output options but the sound keeps being emitted from the internal laptop speaker, or none at all.

2020-08-23 Thread John Dixon
I have the same problem. I ran Pop!_OS 20.04 from USB and the bluetooth
worked fine. And after doing a clean install, bluetooth also worked. But
when I did the initial updates, I had the same problem: device appeared
in settings and connected, but no sound. Something in the initial
updates messed things up.

[Bug 1892427] Re: [amdgpu] HDMI connected TV wakeup problems

2020-08-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That's expected and not a bug. Once a display is removed from the
current configuration (or just turned off), the shell tries to help you
by moving all windows to the remaining monitor. So you don't lose them.

This is however a bug if it happens when you try to sleep the whole
system.

[Bug 1867668] Re: Visual artifacts in Gnome Shell when using the 'intel' Xorg driver

2020-08-23 Thread Jesus Salvo
Also confirming that removing xserver-xorg-video-intel solved the
problem for me too.

I did not also have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf. However, I did
have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-amdgpu-pro-px.conf which was trying to load
the intel driver that was just removed:

  jsalvo@rig01:~$ cat ~/xorg.conf.d-01-amdgpu-pro-px.conf
  Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddGPU" "off"
  EndSection

  Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel"
Driver "intel"
  EndSection

  Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
  EndSection

Have to remove that file as well and then also do a:

  sudo apt purge xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu-pro

... as the amdgpu-pro was installed when it was on 16.04 LTS, before the
upgrade to 20.04 LTS.

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-23 Thread PowerKiKi
@Mike Pozulp, it is correct that the model name referred in the merged
patch is incorrect. It refers to my model.

For future reference here is my alsa-info.sh: http://alsa-
project.org/db/?f=f13c46c58bba7ed21035e65230899b18419cd337

Where we can see:

Board Name:NT950XCJ-X716A
...
Subsystem Id: 0x144dc830

I attached here the patch fixing the model name for John's, and adding
support for headphone for my model.

I'd love to submit the patch, but I've never done that before. I'll see
if I can figure it out later tonight...

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-23 Thread Mike Pozulp
@John Hoff

John, great work!

> Now what? I am not sure what to do with any of this data

Now the hard part. Here's what I think is going on:

The windows driver running in the VM controls the audio codec. How?
According to section 4.4 of the Intel HDA Spec [1], the driver writes to
a circular buffer known as the Command Output Ring Buffer (CORB). The
HDA controller, which is implemented by the hardware manufacturer and
shipped as firmware in the chipset, takes commands from the CORB and
sends them to the codec.

Qemu provides the memory for the VM. That means qemu can see every time
the VM writes to memory. That's a lot of writes! We only care about the
subset of writes to the memory region allocated for the HDA controller,
which is what we get when we specify "vfio_region_write" event tracing.
My laptop has this HDA controller

00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation Cannon
Point-LP High Definition Audio Controller [8086:9dc8] (rev 11)

so when I see qemu output a trace line that looks like

3064@1591386653.159507:vfio_region_write (:00:1f.3:region0+0xe,
0x7fff, 2)

I know that the driver wrote to the HDA controller memory because the
pci device id "1f.3" matches the HDA controller. We can decode the rest
of the line by looking at the qemu source code [2]. 0xe is the memory
offset at which the driver wrote, 0x7fff is the data, and 2 is the size
of the data in bytes.

Which vfio_region_write events are CORB writes? The answer requires an
understanding of the CORB protocol. The CORB has a fixed size which may
be up to 256 entries. That means that all CORB writes are made to memory
within a CORBSIZE range of addresses. After the driver writes an HDA
verb to the CORB, the driver writes a value from 0x0 to 0xff to the CORB
Write Pointer (CORBWP) register which tells the HDA controller the last
valid CORB entry offset so the HDA controller knows how far to read
before stopping and waiting for more data.

Enter QemuHDADump (QHDAD). QHDAD is a program that someone wrote and
published on github which attempts to parse vfio_region_write lines from
qemu to determine the CORB address and record all HDA verbs written to
the CORB. The author of QHDAD has his/her own hardware and did not test
it on my laptop or your laptop so it is likely buggy and therefore may
not produce a good recording of verbs. We don't have to use QHDAD; we
just need some way to parse CORB writes from vfio_region_write events.

Because the speaker sound works on Windows that means that if we send
the verbs in the recording to the HDA controller using snd_hda_intel we
may be able to get the speakers work on Linux. Once we demonstrate that
the speakers function after passing all the verbs in the recording we
need to minimize the verbs if we want any hope of our patch being
included in the kernel. Many of the verbs will be "getters" instead of
"setters" which we can delete. After that it may be a tedious trial-and-
error process to see which of the remaining verbs we can delete. The
verb encodings are specified in the Intel HDA Spec which can help us
guess what can be deleted.

The end goal is a patch which looks like this one [3].

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-23 Thread Mike Pozulp
@John Hoff @PowerKiKi

Is "Samsung Galaxy Book Ion (NT950XCJ-X716A)" not a correct description
of John's laptop? If not, it doesn't matter to snd_hda_intel which only
looks at the subsystem id (0x144dc18a), but it's worth changing it for
the benefit of any humans who read the kernel code.

I use the output from alsa_info.sh and dmidecode to determine the
subsystem id and what to put for the string description, but I don't
have your hardware so I can't check the output for you, which is how I
(possibly) made a mistake in writing the description string.

Re: [Bug 1878279] Re: MSFT0004:00 06CB:CD98 Touchpad/trackpad mouse randomly not recognized from any given boot

2020-08-23 Thread Michael Amplatz
The title makes no sense for me now.

On the two different Lenovo Notebooks I own the Touchpad didn't work any
time.

But, however, there is no usable solution anyway.

[Bug 1892653] [NEW] package phpmyadmin (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: installed phpmyadmin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-08-23 Thread Arpan Kumar Das
Public bug reported:

The phpmyadin is not a major issue.
However the major issue is Ubuntu is slowing down too. The average boot or
startup time for my ubuntu installation should be close to 3 or 4 minutes,
which initially was only a few minutes may be around a 1 minute, which is
acceptable. Found out that this has started happening not only to me but to a
lot of people and this problem had actually started in 18.04 or 19.10 and this
has percolated to 20.04 as well.

Tried to open a url and it didn't work.

https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-appfinder/uploads/22250bfeb364e4cec2274202d6fca60a/image.png

Seems the type should be 'Regular Expression' and not 'Prefix'.

Was submitted upstream but was determined to be a xubuntu bug, as it correctly
set in the code.
