2020-09-07 Thread Volodymyr
Public bug reported:

It is Lenovo P1 which used to work well with Ubuntu 18.04.
I have upgraded to 20.04 and lost the touchpad. Keyboard and other buttons work
well.

[Bug 1894378] Re: Cannot boot after updating kernel to version 5.4.0-45

2020-09-07 Thread Ami
** Description changed:

After the kernel update from version 5.4.0-42 to version 5.4.0-45 a few
days ago, the boot process is ending in a BusyBox shell. Apparently it
cannot properly identify my M.2 NMVe SSD device where my root partition
- is. Indeed, it is not listed in /dev. For now, I'm solving this problem
- by booting the previous kernel, 5.4.0-42. This works fine.
+ is. Indeed, it is not listed in /dev (precisely: nvme0 is listed in
+ /dev, but nvme0n1 and its partitions are not). For now, I'm solving this
+ problem by booting the previous kernel, 5.4.0-42. This works fine.

Also, an earlier attempt ended in a different shell that presented the
error message "Gave up on waiting for root file system device". The UUID
it indicated as missing is the correct UUID of my root partition, which
  also appears on /etc/fstab.

I tried to re-build initrd.img-5.4.0-45-generic, but to no avail.

Let me also mention that in another computer with a non-M.2 SSD, kernel
  5.4.0-45 boots properly.

This bug seems to be the one mentioned in the following "Unix & Linux" forum
question:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/607694/ubuntu-20-04-01-not-booting-after-kernel-update

  Many thanks in advance!

[Bug 1894772] Re: live migration of windows 2012 r2 instance with virtio balloon driver fails from mitaka to queens.

2020-09-07 Thread Seyeong Kim
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

livemigration of windows 2012 r2 instance with virtio balloon driver
from qemu 2.5(mitaka) to qemu 2.11(queens) is not working properly.

  Especially instance keep moving e.g 2.5 -> 2.5 -> 2.11

Then It shows below msg from the 2nd mitaka node.

Migration: [ 94 %]error: internal error: qemu unexpectedly closed the
monitor: 2020-09-07T07:45:11.799345Z qemu-system-x86_64: warning: Unknown

Operation not permitted

  [Test Case]

Deploy 2 mitaka-staging machines kvm host
Deploy 1 queens-staging machines kvm host

Setting NFS server and client between them.

Deploy windows 2012r2 guest instance with virtio balloon driver on one
  of the mitaka host

Migrate it from mitaka to mitaka (it should be ok )
Migrate it from mitaka to queens ( it raises error )

+ I can reproduce this issue with baremetal or vm host
+
  [Regressions]
- TBD
+ As this patch is qemu related, current instance should be restarted to have
this fix.
+ Also, this patch may cause failure of vm starting, migrating related to
virtio drivers.
+ Especially Windows guest vm.

+ Subject: [PATCH] balloon: fix segfault and harden the stats queue
+
+ The segfault here is triggered by the driver notifying the stats queue
+ twice after adding a buffer to it. This effectively resets stats_vq_elem
+ back to NULL and QEMU crashes on the next stats timer tick in
+ balloon_stats_poll_cb.
+
+ This is a regression introduced in 51b19ebe4320f3dc, although admittedly
+ the device assumed too much about the stats queue protocol even before
+ that commit. This commit adds a few more checks and ensures that the one
+ stats buffer gets deallocated on device reset.

+ Subject: [PATCH] virtio: move VirtQueueElement at the beginning of the structs
+
+ The next patch will make virtqueue_pop/vring_pop allocate memory for
+ the VirtQueueElement. In some cases (blk, scsi, gpu) the device wants
+ to extend VirtQueueElement with device-specific fields and, until now,
+ the place of the VirtQueueElement within the containing struct didn't
+ matter. When allocating the entire block in virtqueue_pop/vring_pop,
+ however, the containing struct must basically be a "subclass" of
+ VirtQueueElement, with the VirtQueueElement as the first field. Make
+ that the case for blk and scsi; gpu is already doing it.

+ Subject: [PATCH] virtio: move allocation to virtqueue_pop/vring_pop
+
+ The return code of virtqueue_pop/vring_pop is unused except to check for
+ errors or 0. We can thus easily move allocation inside the functions
+ and just return a pointer to the VirtQueueElement.
+
+ The advantage is that we will be able to allocate only the space that
+ is needed for the actual size of the s/g list instead of the full
+ VIRTQUEUE_MAX_SIZE items. Currently VirtQueueElement takes about 48K
+ of memory, and this kind of allocation puts a lot of stress on malloc.
+ By cutting the size by two or three orders of magnitude, malloc can
+ use much more efficient algorithms.
+
+ The patch is pretty large, but changes to each device are testable
+ more or less independently. Splitting it would mostly add churn.

[Bug 1894177] Re: Scale factor not applied to Xwayland clients

2020-09-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Looking at the GTK source I still can't tell how it's meant to work, or
if it ever did work correctly.

In a pure Xorg session the scaling factor is an attribute of the
monitor, so it's stored in ~/.config/monitors.xml. Are we losing that
attribute in Xwayland with its virtual monitor?

A nice simple solution would be env GDK_SCALE= and that works.
But I'm not sure if there's a different way it's meant to work already.

[Bug 480159] Re: grub console is ridiculously slow

2020-09-07 Thread nawK
I too am affected by slow console when GRUB_TERMINAL_MODE is set to
gfxmode in GRUB 2.04 and earlier versions. I believe this problem is
not resolution-specific; but suffers under VBE mode.

I can also verify that I don't have this issue with syslinux (which uses
VGA modes).

[Bug 1894775] [NEW] thinkpad x1 exterme touchpad/trackpoint stopped working

2020-09-07 Thread shanec
Public bug reported:

Touchpad/trackpad stopped working (major issue)
-

Expected:
Touchpad/trackpad to function/work

Actual:
Touchpad/trackpad are completely unresponsive

Details:
Apparently after some update last week (week of 9/1 - 9/4) my
touchpad/trackpoint stopped working.
I've used and installed 20.04.1 since August, and was previously using 18.04
for years without issue on the same machine.

I had an some issue which required a force shutdown (long power button
press). I thought that may have caused the problem, but I just re-
installed 20.04, updated to latest packages and the touchpad/trackpad do
not work.

Trackpad/touchpad work fine in the windows boot on the same machine, so
I don't think this is a hardware issue.

Screen Size Issue (minor issue)

Expected:
Screen displays at a size/resolution that matches the display.

Actual:
Screen icons/fonts/menus appear enlarged on login screen and initial login.

Details:
After reinstall and package update/install, reboot, the login screen shows
"large" and logging in the menu/display fonts are increased.

If I go to settings>display select size adjustment to 200% apply then
select "return to previous" settings, the screen menu/display fonts
return to the expected/desired size.

[Bug 1894400] Re: Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

2020-09-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
'dmesg' or 'CurrentDmesg' contains only messages from the kernel.

'journalctl' contains all messages from everything, including pulseaudio
hopefully.

2020-09-07 Thread gregrwm
upon the next manifestation i certainly will attach journalctl -b0 for
you. meanwhile i'm curious what difference you find between that and
CurrentDmesg. To me they both appear to be a readout of messages from
the most recent boot up until the present.

Please reboot, reproduce the problem again and while it is happening
run:

 journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

[Bug 1893952] Re: very long boot/log in with log in window upper left corner?

2020-09-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
To resolve the remaining slowness please open a Terminal window and run:

  sudo rm /var/crash/*

and then reboot.

Separately, to try and resolve your broken package problem try:

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt full-upgrade
  Reboot.

If you still can't solve it after that then I suggest reinstalling the
whole OS. But next time use Ubuntu 20.04 which is supported, stable, and
won't have these kinds of problems.

literally took 5 minutes to get logged into the GUI . . . .

As reported previously I have an install of Lu 20.10 in the same drive .

[Bug 1891684] Re: [amdgpu] Screen flickers after resuming from suspend

2020-09-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can't see anything related to the problem in the log of comment #8.
Probably because that log is from the wrong session? I don't see any
evidence of suspend+resume there.

Please:

1. Reboot.

2. Suspend, resume, and reproduce the bug again.

3. Reboot again.

4. Run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevbootagain.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1805077] Re: [ASUS X555YI] the audio pause and repeat for a very short of time randomly

2020-09-07 Thread Abdulrhman
It seems that it's an old bug:
It happened in 16.04, see:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/915904/audio-glitches-every-2-10-minutes-ubuntu-16-04
and 18.04, see:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1044552/audio-stuttering-in-ubuntu-18-04
It turned out that there is a bug in kernel which causes audio stutter if a
wifi enabled yet not connected to any wifi network.
So I disabled my internal unused wifi card (like in this refrence:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/168032/how-to-disable-built-in-wifi-and-use-only-usb-wifi-card),
and so far everything works fine.

[Bug 1844453]

2020-09-07 Thread Cloph-0
google authentication is https://github.com/tdf/libcmis/issues/22 / a
bit more involved. (but I think it should also be fixable by using plain
oauth2 and the same copy-URL-to-Browser and copy-the-result-back
workflow.

Google's docs mention to just listen on a local loopback IP address and get the
result that way - that is of course also an option to at least avoid copy-back
into the dialog. But that's a "stretch goal" :-)
Google lists the Manual copy/paste with a hint of "may be discontinued in the
future"
https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/oauth2/native-app

For onedrive it seems that the API was never migrated from the
old/deprecated/now-non-function live apis to Microsoft graph.
The only "not-so-nice" thing is that we ask the user to copy'n'paste back
between the browser and the LO dialog, but that's easy enough to do.
Furthermore we can get rid of the username/pw entry that LO cannot use anyway
(or rather: It (LO/libcmis) should not attempt to imitate a user using the
browser and try to parse the response of whatever login window appears that is
augmented with webX.y stuff :-))

Fixing onedrive should be easy enough to do:
* Fix endpoints/scopes to match the Graph scheme
* Fix libcmis to use the new (or rather current) OneDrive REST API (instead of
the old skydrive one that doesn't work anymore since end of 2018)
* Fix remote-server dialog to not ask for username and password -
authentication/login is handled in the user's browser

Re: [Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-09-07 Thread Brian Neltner
Fundamentally it's fair to blame nvidia's closed source drivers because
the open source one seems to do fractional scaling properly.

Other than that what's the point in assigning blame? I'm not sure
someone is even paying attention to this bug report, I probably would
turn off notifications if it were me volunteering and trying to repair a
closed source blob going constantly hassled about not fixing it yet. We
really need to learn to be patient.

Maybe we can pitch in to pay someone to make the feature work. Until
then...

[Bug 1894762] [NEW] file-roller does not unpack *.deb package

2020-09-07 Thread Jeffrey Walton
Public bug reported:

I'm working on Ubuntu 18.04 x86_64 fully patched with the 5.3.0-66
kernel. The machine has file-roller 3.28.0.

I'm trying to unpack a *.deb package. I double click on the *.deb
archive and it opens in file-roller. I then click the 'Extract' button
and select a directory. Finally, I click 'Extract' button again (in the
file picker).

file-roller only unpacks the _gpgbuilder file. It does not unpack
control.tar.xz, data.tar.xz, or debian-binary.

It does not matter whether I select 0 files in file picker, or all files
in file picker. file-roller only unpacks the one file.

If file-roller worked as expected, then I would expect to see
_gpgbuilder, control.tar.xz, data.tar.xz, or debian-binary in the
extraction directory.

The file I am trying to extract is Zoom's binary for Linux. It is
available from https://zoom.us/download. I want to disassemble the
program and maybe see what's going on under the hood.

Lately I upgraded the CPU/Mainbord/Memory with more compute power. Instead of

mounting did not work for weeks of daily booting. Since the upgrade the problem
vanished.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-09-07 Thread David Smoot
I do not wish to sound ungrateful or entitled but this bug is literally
the one show stopper that is preventing me from doing more work in
Linux. I run a triple monitor setup and per monitor fractional scaling
is a non-negotiable must for my work.

Can someone explain the root of the problem?

Is it poor driver support on Linux?

Is it the desktop environment lacks mature support for this feature?

Is it just very technically difficult and nobody has the time to handle
all the possible combinations?

Every day I sadly hold the space bar to bring up the boot menu to select
Windows Boot Manager.

Where is the limitation that prevents a solution here? What can be done
to facilitate a fix?

Thanks,
David

[Bug 1841072] Re: test_reflection.CallbackEqualityTest.test_different_instance_callbacks fails on Python 3.8

2020-09-07 Thread Ghanshyam Mann
This was considered as bugfix in python 3.8 because bound methods should
only be equal if they are bound on the same instance, not if their
instances are equal. In Python <= 3.7 the bound method equality calls
the equivalent of instance1 == instance2 and return true based on that
and while in Python 3.8 it checks if instance1 is instance2.

You can see details about this behavior change in py3.8
- https://bugs.python.org/issue1617161
- python-dev discussion:
https://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2018-June/153959.html

With that and for cases of 'strict=False', oslo utils is_same_callback() method
behaviour also changed. With 'strict=False', this method returned *True* for
python <3.7 (because == comparison used to call the __eq__ method return
value) and *False* for python3.8 onwards (because == never call __eq__ method
and check the id of self).

For 'strict' is True (which is the default) there is no behavior change because
is_same_callback() method checks if 'self' of both bound methods are equal or
not
-
https://github.com/openstack/oslo.utils/blob/7c4a94c0c3fcbd8f05541944851728f30deadd9b/oslo_utils/reflection.py#L183

We should modify the test to test the behaviors this way and in
is_same_callback() method we should clearly document that 'strict' is no
more an option or valid thing for python3.8 onwards and we should even
deprecate this arg itself.

[Bug 1894589] Re: After grub updates the video display is wrong

2020-09-07 Thread Gordon Uretsky
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  After today's updates, including:
   grub-common:amd64 2.02-2ubuntu8.18
   grub-efi-amd64-bin:amd64 2.02-2ubuntu8.18
   grub-pc-bin:amd64 2.02-2ubuntu8.18
   grub2-common:amd64 2.02-2ubuntu8.18
   grub-pc:amd64 2.02-2ubuntu8.18
   grub-efi-amd64-signed:amd64 1.93.20+2.02-2ubuntu8.18

I was dual booting into Windows and back, so that I can say with
certainty that the bug started affecting me today when I came back into
  Ubuntu.

I get the error "Failed to start Load Kernel Modules" and my video
monitor is restricted to "Unknown Display" 1024 x 768 but works
  correctly otherwise.

On August 26 the kernel updated to 4.15.0-115 from 4.15.0-112 which
  seemed to cause no problems.

I don't see any other likely suspects in today's upgrade, BUT it is
fixed by booting into the prior kernel version 4.15.0-112, leaving an
interplay between grub and the newer kernel as a likely culprit.
