Still visible on F-azure 5.4.0-1032.33, but only with instance

We might need to test this manually on this instance to see if it needs
more time to run.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Safe mode isn't a fix, it's just a temporary workaround. It will give
you the wrong resolution and no hardware acceleration either.

Please follow the instructions in comment #4 as soon as is convenient.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

[Bug 1890435] Re: gcc-10 breaks on armhf (flaky): internal compiler error: Segmentation fault

2020-11-29 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
FYI - another 8 runs without a crash on r10-7093.
My current working theory is that the root cause of the crash might have been
added as early as r10-4054 but one or many later changes have increased the
chance (think increase the race window or such) for the issue to trigger.
If that assumption is true and with the current testcase it is nearly
impossible to properly bisect the "original root cause". And at the same time
still hard to find the one that increased the race window - since crashing
early does not surely imply we are in the high/low chance area.

We've had many runs with the base versions so that one is really good.
But any other good result we've had so far could - in theory - be challenged
and needs ~30 good runs to be somewhat sure (puh that will be a lot of time).

I'm marking the old runs that are debatable with good?.

Also we might want to look for just the "new" crash signature.

20190425 good
r10-1014
r10-2027 good?4
r10-2533
r10-3040 good?4
r10-3220
r10-3400 good?4
r10-3450
r10-3475
r10-3478
r10-3593
r10-3622
r10-3657 good?5
r10-3727 good?3
r10-4054 other kind of bad - signature different, and rare?
r10-6080 good?10
r10-7093 bad, but slow to trigger
20200507 bad bad bad

Signatures:
r10-4054 arm_legitimate_address_p (nonimmediate)
r10-7093 add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)
r10-7093 add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)
20200507 extract_plus_operands (lra)
20200507 avoid_constant_pool_reference (lra)
20200507 add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)
ubu-10.2 add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)
ubu-10.2 avoid_constant_pool_reference (lra)
ubu-10.2 thumb2_legitimate_address_p (lra)
ubu-10.2 add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)

Of course it could be that the same root cause surfaces as two different
signatures - but to it could as well be a multitude of issues. Therefore
- for now - "add_regs_to_insn_regno_info (lra)" is what I'll continue to
hunt for.

With some luck (do we have any in this?) the 10 runs on 6080 are sufficient.
Let us try r10-6586 next and plan for 15-30 runs to be sure it is good.
If hitting the issue I'll still re-run it so we can compare multiple signatures.

playing games in steam, especially games using the proton runtime layer

[Bug 1906217] [NEW] ubiquity fails on grub on custom patitioning with boot and efi on separate microsd

2020-11-29 Thread Madalin Ignisca
Public bug reported:

I'm trying a more particular partitioning scheme and every time ubiquity
fails to finish the grub install.

I have 2 nvme drives, identical, formatted full disk with btrfs in raid0 to
make my rootfs.
Additionally, for boot (ext4) and efi partitions, a separate microsd card.

Before finishing, ubiquity shouts a failure and looking in I can see
that grub failed to install.

I managed to do this particular partitioning scheme using Arch Linux,
and installing grub as per the wiki worked without any error or warning.
I can't understand why there is something opinionated in Ubuntu's
installer that would fail grub installation.

Next time you boot Ubuntu, please try not only 'Ubuntu on Wayland' but

the problem is specific to the native mode of the LCD panel or happens
in other modes too. It sounds like this might be a hardware issue,
especially if Win10 has something similar.

Thanks. That link shows all your recent gnome-shell crashes are the
same; bug 1872461. So to avoid gnome-shell crashing you should just need
to uninstall the one extension: 'sound-output-device-chooser'.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom
half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just
hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for
Wayland.

Cheers
Glenn

[Bug 1906137] Re: gnome-shell on 20.10 crashes all the time

2020-11-29 Thread Tessa
hey Daniel,

if I'm reading the first part of your reply right, it sounds like gnome-
shell extensions can hard crash gnome-shell? which means it's not safe
to ever use any extensions? i feel like i must be misunderstanding that,
since ubuntu distributes a set of extensions by default in the desktop
env, and that wouldn't make sense if the shell extensions are so
dangerous.

on to the next steps, there's no crash files in that dir, but there are
files called `_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload` and `_usr_bin_gnome-
shell.1000.uploaded`. I'm assuming that's what ties into
errors.ubuntu.com.

I see a ton of errors around gnome on that site for my whoopsie-id, lots of
gnome-shell and gnome-settings-daemon crashes:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/3e155148c8cdcde9fe5cd5283283ef9837d7582a978ff3ce587c63aefe0cd3d3bc1bbe4921b8fff669e75ac4de5f3962de964e0df2f56142604e65bb3aa47f5c

it doesn't let me look at those crash reports so I don't really have a
clue what the root cause could be, but hopefully you have access to them
and can investigate further.

[Bug 1906137] Re: gnome-shell on 20.10 crashes all the time

2020-11-29 Thread Tessa
it's also worth noting that my laptop, which is also seeing a bunch of
these crashes on gnome-shell, doesn't have any extra extensions
installed that don't come from Ubuntu. this may be coincidence, but it
does feel off that after upgrading to 20.10 both my systems that run
Ubuntu on the desktop have a ton of gnome-shell crashes.

[Bug 1906137] Re: gnome-shell on 20.10 crashes all the time

2020-11-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Since so many bugs are caused by extensions, the first thing you should
try is removing these:

'putwin...@clemens.lab21.org', 'sound-output-device-
choo...@kgshank.net', 'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de', 'update-
extensi...@franglais125.gmail.com',
'appindicatorsupp...@rgcjonas.gmail.com', 'topic...@phocean.net',

indica...@franglais125.gmail.com', 'system-
moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com', 'user-theme@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com'

but also...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

2020-11-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
"121" implies it's not something you own, and wasn't from an actual
login. Maybe it's from the login screen itself. Regardless, you can fix
that with:

  sudo chown $USER /var/crash/_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.121.crash

or

  sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.121.crash

[Bug 1062735] Re: ethercodes.dat in arpwatch is out of date

I ended up just adding this to my crontab to pull an updated copy once a
month.

# Update the pci id file
20 120 * * /usr/sbin/update-pciids

The easy solution might be to add a cron file to do something similar. A
cleaner solution would be to include it into it a dedicated package.

[Bug 1850887] Re: Audio / Sound reverts to HDMI when power event occurs

2020-11-29 Thread Doug
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1847570 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1847570

Me also, 10 months after the last post and still a problem.
3 weeks, 7 different distro's and now another one that makes it hard to enjoy
Linux.
It is frustrating and the only one I've tried with a sound issue but they all
have problems.
