[Bug 1896575] Re: [UBUNTU 20.04] syslog daemon stop running unexpectedly
Hi! Well, based on what we could see from the logs and the tries and output we asked for, we think that we can't do so much more w/o touching the system. Hence we're asking if it's possible to recreate the situation on a system that allows remote access, so that we can have a direct look at it. Do you think that's possible ? That would have the following two goals: 1. allows to exclude errors/problems based on the current hw setup and env. (especially in case the system with remote access runs in a different env.) 2. it obviously allows a direct debugging by us -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896575 Title: [UBUNTU 20.04] syslog daemon stop running unexpectedly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-z-systems/+bug/1896575/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
I did not want to actually install Ubuntu. I wanted to be able to run it and see how it has progressed since I last used 12.04 from 2012 till 2016 on 3 x machines that were formerly Win XP. In summary then, my hardware is suspected to be the issue, and if I want to progress to see if the Wayland option helps, I have to install Ubuntu. >From what I have seen so far, I will not proceed with installation. However, I may have to-visit that decision if I am unable to resolve the issue in Win 10 - if I have to rebuild Win 10, I may as well clear it all out and install Ubuntu. [Bug 1906601] Re: Display + HDMI not working properly. I suspect the automatically installed driver.
It appears "UNCLAIMED" in lshw is somewhat common. So I wouldn't take that to be evidence of a problem although it is suspicious. What is evidence of a real problem is the Xorg log shows software rendering is in use: [ 3.872] (II) FBDEV(0): hardware: EFI VGA (video memory: 8100kB) and the correct hardware device node is missing: [ 3.872] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory This makes me think the kernel version is slightly too old for your GPU. [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05
After several painstaking hours I finally got it working on Manjaro, so I wanted to share my experience for anyone else that is new to patching the kernel like me. This is my first time ever doing so. I tried and tried to make this work on Ubuntu Budgie 20.10 following the guide by @Baq Domalaq (baq) but I just couldnt get the ubuntu kernel to build. Manjaro on the other hand was fairly painless. This only works for Manjaro 1. Clone the kernel repo for linux 5.8 # git clone https://gitlab.manjaro.org/packages/core/linux58.git 2. open the repo # cd ./linux58 3. Download the patch from #179 # wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1887190/+attachment/5418465/+files/0303-pinctrl-amd2.patch 4. Edit the PKGBUILD file and add '0303-pinctrl-amd2.patch' after the line that has '0303-pinctrl-amd.patch' 5. Update the checksums # updpkgsums 6. Build the package. This will take some time. You may be prompted for something about PREMPT. Choose CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY. # makepkg -s 7. Once it's done, you can install the package. # makepkg -i In my case, this broke the nvidia driver so I ended up uninstalling the nonfree driver and using the free driver instead. This can be done with the following commands. 8. Remove nonfree driver. Could also be video-nvidia-455xx # sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-440xx 9. Install the free driver # sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux Also installing the free driver fixed the display brightness issue. Everything seems to be working for me now! Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately you seem to have packages from the "oibaf" PPA installed, which are known to cause a lot of graphics problems. [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
OK. You would need to install Ubuntu before you can choose Wayland. But it's not guaranteed to fix things. And if you see related problems in Windows 10 then it sounds like the hardware is faulty :( Maybe not badly faulty... if the problem is just incorrect timing info in the monitor's EDID. It's not unusual for manufacturers to mess up EDIDs so hopefully that's the only problem. Regardless, if this is fixable in software then it sounds kernel-related so reassigning... ** Package changed: mutter (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906086 Title: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1906086/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1906572] [NEW] FTBFS on hirsute (missing rpc/rpc.h)
Public bug reported: Fails to build with: fatal error: rpc/rpc.h: No such file or directory 32 | #include This is due to this file no longer being in libc6-dev, but now in a different location provided by libtirpc-dev. The configure.in has code to handle this for Fedora, which should be made to work for Ubuntu. [Bug 1906111] Re: package grub-legacy-ec2 1:1 failed to install/upgrade: installed grub-legacy-ec2 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report. I have tried to reproduce this problem here, but did not succeed. Here's what I did: 1) Launched a Bionic VM using lxd 2) apt update && apt upgrade 3) apt-get -o APT::Status-Fd=4 -o APT::Keep-Fds::=5 -o APT::Keep-Fds::=6 -q -y -o APT::Install-Recommends=true -o APT::Get::AutomaticRemove=true -o APT::Acquire::Retries=3 install server^ This last command is what triggered the problem; I don't think the previous commands from the log are too important. Everything went fine, including the configuration process of grub- legacy-ec2. In my test system, here is what I saw: Setting up grub-legacy-ec2 (1:1) ... Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub Searching for default file ... Generating /boot/grub/default file and setting the default boot entry to 0 Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-126-generic Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-124-generic Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done As you can see, I did not get an error about dpkg not being able to determine the root device. I have also gotten the full log, whereas in your case it appears that the log has been cut. Do you have access to the full output of the "apt-get" command you executed? It is hard to say for certain, but it seems to me that there might be a local configuration error in your system that is preventing the package from completing its setup. Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I am marking this bug as 'Incomplete'. However, if you believe that this is really a bug in Ubuntu, then we would be grateful if you would provide a more complete description of the problem with steps to reproduce, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to "New". [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed
** Description changed: "initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on boot up. If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes without decoding failed message. --- However, we currently believe that the decoding error reported in dmesg is actually harmless and has no impact on usability on the system. Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot. Kernel should be fixed to correctly parse lz4 compressed initrds, or at least lower the warning, to not be user visible as an error. + + [Impact] + + * Decoding failure messages in dmsg with a single lz4 initrd + + * Multiple lz4 compressed initrds cannot be decompressed by kernel, + when loaded by grub + + * Multiple lz4 compressed initrds cannot be decompressed by kernel, + when there is padding between them + + [Test Case] + + * Create empty padding with $ dd if=/dev/zero of=pad4 bs=1 count=4 + + * Create an lz4 compressed initrd with a single test-file in it with + some content. I.e. echo "second-initrd" > test-file, and then pack that + with cpio hewc owned by root & lz4 -l. + + * Create a combined padded initrd of stock initrd, pad4, and the test- + marker initrd created above. + + * Boot above with "break=top" kernel command line. + + * With broken kernels, there should be dmesg error message that + decoding failed, and one will observe that /test-file does not exist in + the shell. + + * With fixed kernel, /test-file in the initrd shell should exist, and + should have the expected content "second-initrd". + + * The alignment and padding in the above test case depends on the size + of the first initrd => if a given padded initrd does not reproduce the + problem, try varying the size of the first initrd or that of the padding + between 0..4. + + + [Where problems could occur] + + * This changes compatible lz4 decompressor in the kernel, which can + also be used by other kernel modules such as cryptography, squashfs, + zram, f2fs, comprssed kernel image, pstore. For example, previously + rejected files with "bogus" length and extra padding may now be + accepted, whereas they were previously getting rejected by the + decompressor. + + * Ideally kernel should switch to the stable lz4 format which has + better specification of end of stream. ** Patch added: "0001-lib-decompress_unlz4.c-correctly-handle-zero-padding.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1835660/+attachment/5440421/+files/0001-lib-decompress_unlz4.c-correctly-handle-zero-padding.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1835660 Title: initramfs unpacking failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1835660/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1906449] Re: Xorg randomly freezes
Update (which I hope turns out to be helpful): While I was reading through my own error logs, I saw "Guake", so I decided to check and see if there have been any problems reported with Guake Terminal. I found this: https://github.com/Guake/guake/issues/1753 and this: https://github.com/Guake/guake/issues/1749#issuecomment-632189285 and so I tried the tips in the comments. I disabled "Automatically save session..." in the "Preferences" and I disabled the activation of Guake at startup in my system settings, and the problem still persisted. So now, I can say with certainty that Guake isn't the problem. I'm almost entirely sure that it's an issue with Xorg, because the exact same problem happened with the screen/computer freezing/locking up about 5 minutes into having it turned on without my doing anything at all. Also, this is unrelated to the bug, but I can't find contact info on the official Ubuntu site, so I thought perhaps I'd ask here: How can I become a Linux Developer and contribute to Ubuntu? I really love this project, and I've developed a huge love affair with Linux as a whole. I've gathered that I need to become fully fluent in C, since Linux itself is written in C: https://github.com/torvalds/linux Plus, I'm currently studying for, first, the LFCSA, and then the LFCE. I've tried looking for answers at: > https://askubuntu.com/questions/419042/how-do-i-register-as-a-ubuntu-developer > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopers > https://discourse.ubuntu.com/ > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/SourceCode > https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu but I'm having difficulty finding my way around. [Bug 1892369] Re: Impossible to skip integrity test for ubuntu-server 20.04.1 iso
separately remote iso mounting may be slow, thus you should try netbooting instead. one can copy the kernel & initrd out of the iso. [Bug 1905322] Re: LibreOffice crashes under load.
I have no idea how long the bug has existed. The odds of someone finding it are really low. I only noticed because that's how I was testing Hirsute. I'd open all the apps in a category, maybe click a few things, scroll a little, pick an option, and then close everything. I just so happened to click on Vivid and the whole thing crashed. Nobody is going to encounter this bug in the real world. Outside of testing, it will never impact anyone. Which is to say, I absolutely agree with the 'low' rating of this bug. As this is my first time really taking the time to report bugs, I am left with a question: Has my obligation to this bug ended? I see no reason to report it in the daily beta Lubuntu builds. It's obviously upstream and out of Lubuntu's control. So, do I need to do anything else at this point? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1905322 Title: LibreOffice crashes under load. KGIII,Thanks to your very clear steps I've reproduced this on hirsute Lubuntu. [Bug 1906565] Re: traceback when running apport as non-root user
** Description changed: [Impact] The apport-test-crashes package, which is used to test the Error Tracker deployments, fails produce crash files for binary applications since "various security hardening fixes" were included in apport. The problematic change is the dropping of supplemental groups in data/apport. This results in a PermissionError as it is not the root user who is calling /usr/share/apport/apport. [Test Case] The least convulted test case involves using the generate-sigsegv-crash.py script from apport-test-crashes. This ends up using a command similar to '/usr/share/apport/apport -p 4077 -s 11 -E /usr/bin/gnome-calculator < /tmp/20.10-gnome-calculator.core' which then will encounter the Traceback. 1) Comment out "check_lock()" in /usr/share/apport/apport (This is necessary as we are not running as root) 2) Put a copy of generate-sigsegv-crash.py on disk. 3) Run 'python3 /tmp/generate-sigsegv-crash.py cat' 4) Observe the following Traceback: Traceback (most recent call last): - File "/tmp/tmpvkt5d266/apport", line 599, in - drop_privileges(True) - File "/tmp/tmpvkt5d266/apport", line 125, in drop_privileges - os.setgroups([]) + File "/tmp/tmpvkt5d266/apport", line 599, in + drop_privileges(True) + File "/tmp/tmpvkt5d266/apport", line 125, in drop_privileges + os.setgroups([]) PermissionError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted With the version of apport from -proposed you'll receive no such Traceback. [Regression Potential] If there is an error in the python code we code see a new traceback for any and all crashes being generated, so ensure regular crash generation works too. + + apport-test-crashes code is here: + https://code.launchpad.net/~daisy-pluckers/error-tracker-deployment/test-crashes/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906565 Title: traceback when running apport as non-root user To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1906565/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
