[Bug 1913263] [NEW] Remove scary stack trace from Realtek WiFi driver

2021-01-25 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Scary stack trace spamming by Realtek WiFi driver.

[Fix]
The issue is actually harmless, so replace the WARN macro with dbg
macro.

[Test]
No more scary stack trace in dmesg after applying the patch.

[Where problems could occur]
This patch doesn't bring any behavior change, so there won't be any
regression risk.

[Bug 1909665] Re: [MIR] ibus-libpinyin dependencies

2021-01-25 Thread Didier Roche
This looks good, thanks Gunnar! On that note, acking the MIR and
promoting right now to hirsute.

To keep in sync with Debian, what I would suggest is to create alongside
.symbols, a .ubuntu.symbols. Then replace it at build time
(and restore it afterwards) in debian/rules, so that the right version
(upstream or ubuntu) is in place during build, making sense?

[Bug 1905591] Re: no brightness control in {455, 460} after update from 450

2021-01-25 Thread Manzood Naqvi
I can confirm that this bug affects me too, but unfortunately the
workaround suggested by @sureshot16 that worked for some users here did
not work for me, so I think it wouldn't for some makes and models.

For reference, I'm on a laptop with the following specifications:
Lenovo Legion Y540
NVIDIA GTX 1650 Mobile/Max-Q
Ubuntu 20.04
kernel 5.8.0-38 generic

I've had brightness issues on previous versions of the NVIDIA drivers as
well, somewhat constantly, but they'd stop once I suspended the laptop
and opened it up again once. This is not the case for the 460 driver.

[Bug 1891934] Re: [MIR] google-osconfig-agent

2021-01-25 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed google-osconfig-agent 20200625.00-0ubuntu2 as checked into groovy.
This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.
There's far too much code here to provide detailed feedback.

google-osconfig-agent is a cloud-specific operating system management
interface that provides a common user interface over several operating
systems, to manage some aspects of configuration.

- CVE History:
I didn't see any in our database
- Build-Depends?
  debhelper-compat (= 12), dh-golang, golang-any
- pre/post inst/rm scripts?
Mostly automatically added -- the $1 == upgrade path is done manually
  and should use "$1" instead.
- init scripts?
  None
- systemd units?
Simply starts the agent, no hardening options
- dbus services?
  None
- setuid binaries?
  None
- binaries in PATH?
  /usr/bin/google_osconfig_agent
- sudo fragments?
  None
- polkit files?
  None
- udev rules?
  None
- unit tests / autopkgtests?
Moderate number of unit tests / e2e tests, I didn't try to run them
  myself
- cron jobs?
  None
- Build logs:
  Pretty clean build logs
  Multiple lintian errors and warnings

 W: google-osconfig-agent source: debhelper-compat-file-is-missing
 W: google-osconfig-agent source:
package-uses-deprecated-debhelper-compat-version 1
 E: google-osconfig-agent source: package-uses-debhelper-but-lacks-build-depends
 E: google-osconfig-agent source: missing-build-dependency debhelper

- Processes spawned?
There's a lot of process spawning, almost all of it with probably
partially-trusted inputs. The executions usually looked safe from the
usual system(3)-style errors, however the inputs into the functions may
  be less safe.
- Memory management?
  Go program, fine.
- File IO?
File IO is a weak point of this program -- file operations aren't
programmed using best practices and present reliability and security
risks that I feel need remediation.
- Logging?
I don't think this is a significant problem with Go, I didn't see
  anything concerning in spot-checks.
- Environment variable usage?
  Minimal use, looked fine
- Use of privileged functions?
  Minimal use, looked fine
- Use of cryptography / random number sources etc?
Some weak random number sources are used but it didn't feel
  security-relevant
- Use of temp files?
  I think these looked safe
- Use of networking?
It's hard to be sure but I think very little, maybe some grpc.
- Use of WebKit?
  None
- Use of PolicyKit?
  None

- Any significant cppcheck results?
  None
- Any significant Coverity results?
  Unable
- Any significant shellcheck results?
  Minor
- Any significant bandit results?
  None

Security team wishes to defer a decision at the moment for promoting
google-osconfig-agent to main. We need to package a newer version --
the move 07550 directories are addressed in a newer version. I haven't
checked to see if any of the other findings have been addressed, but I
wouldn't be surprised if the google-osconfig-agent team decides some of
these issues need CVEs and security fixes. It'd be nice to have those
taken care of before the package enters main.

shellcheck found a very minor issue in debian/postrm; it's almost
certainly not an issue.

gosec results are long and many are useless, but Chmod return value must
be checked, debugging endpoint in main.go must be confirmed as desirable,
hardcoded directory permissions should be confirmed. Traversal and archive
bomb issues should be confirmed. There's a lot of unchecked error returns.

Quite a lot of the file IO in this program is not multiprocess-safe:
operations are quite often performed as if no other processes on the
system may interact with the files that this program is manipulating.
Other processes may find partially-written files, files or directories
with incorrect permissions, and may be able to race the various chown(2)
or chmod(2) operations to exploit the system.

This represents not only potential security issues but also potential
reliability issues: half-written files or missing files or incorrect
permissions have caused problems for decades.

Here's some notes I took while reading, in the hopes that they are useful.
Some of them may justify CVEs to ensure all consumers are alerted to the
issues.

stepCopyFile() writes directly to a destination file rather than a
temporary file and renaming; if someone else owns the destination file,
they'll control the new file, too.
Without the rename(), writes are not atomic.
doesn't check error returns on Chmod call

NormPath() doesn't return errors in case of '/../' in pathnames; eg
extractZip() doesn't do any name filtering
extractZip() uses 755 for directories
extractZip() doesn't try to skip writing through symlinks
extractTar() uses 700 for the first directory
extractTar() doesn't do any name filtering,
extractTar() doesn't try to skip writing through symlinks
extractTar() unpacks hardlinks, symlinks, device nodes, and fifos
extractTar() looks like it'll chown and chtimes any

I remember the apt version of chromium will show an "!" mark on the 3-dot menu
button to tell you restart chromium because the app is updated. I'll try the
refresh-app-awareness setting to see if it works better.

By any chance are you using different devices when you are experiencing
the change? The natural scrolling setting is a per device setting and
not global.

[Bug 1913240] [NEW] do-release-upgrade ignores APT proxy exemption

2021-01-25 Thread MegaBrutal
Public bug reported:

When I try to check for an upgrade, this is what happens:

# do-release-upgrade -c
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
Failed to connect to https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release-lts. Check your
Internet connection or proxy settings
There is no development version of an LTS available.
To upgrade to the latest non-LTS develoment release
set Prompt=normal in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.

With tcpdump, I discovered that do-release-upgrade tries to connect the
configured APT-Cacher-NG proxy. The proxy only listens on plaintext HTTP
(TCP:80), while the script tries to connect it on HTTPS (TCP:443),
because it wants to download meta-release-lts through an https:// URL.
Since I have no intention to configure SSL certificates on the proxy for
the sole reason to enable upgraders to operate, I thought I'd rather
exempt it from the APT proxy setting.

Currently, I have this APT proxy configuration under
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d:

Acquire::http {
Proxy::changelogs.ubuntu.com "DIRECT";
Proxy "http://taranis.lan;;
};
Acquire::https {
Proxy::changelogs.ubuntu.com "DIRECT";
};

I added an explicit section for https too, just in case. According to
man apt-transport-http, the syntax should be correct and `apt-config
dump` reports that it correctly parsed the config file and understands
that it needs to exempt changelogs.ubuntu.com.

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://taranis.lan;;
Acquire::http::Proxy::changelogs.ubuntu.com "DIRECT";
Acquire::https::Proxy "";
Acquire::https::Proxy::changelogs.ubuntu.com "DIRECT";

However, trying `do-release-upgrade -c` has the same result, the
upgrader still wants to get the meta-release file via the proxy. It is a
strange situation, because it seems `do-release-upgrade` wants to honour
the APT proxy configuration, but it ignores the exemptions. In my case,
it would be better to ignore the proxy altogether.

I have this proxy for quite a while and the server was configured to use
it, and I don't remember encountering this issue on any previous release
upgrade, but I haven't run one since 2018. I guess the feature of
honouring the APT proxy config was added recently in the last 2 years. I
have this issue on my Bionic server, and I reproduced it on a pristine
Focal VM installation as well.

I think the intended or desirable behaviour would be to adhere to the
APT proxy configuration in its entirety, including the exemptions.

[Bug 1912535] Re: [SRU] python-cffi in Groovy needs a no-change rebuild

python-cffi in Groovy was built against libbfi

Build Log: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/495225981/buildlog_ubuntu-

I would expect that if this issue occurred, it would also be visible in

[Bug 1910934] Re: lxqt loses natural scrolling

2021-01-25 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Oh, actually, looking deeper, I didn't notice you were on 19.10 to begin
with. I'm not sure that we were enforcing file checks then. My comment
is still relevant though.

If you can confirm that you did indeed verify the hashes of both the ISO
and installation media, then perhaps the next step might be to use
something like auditd
(https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/man8/auditd.8.html) to
figure out what process is changing the file and how often.

2021-01-25 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Well, I do see one rather concerning part of your bug report:

CasperMD5CheckResult: skip

This means that you didn't allow the system to check the files being
installed, which is to say you may have a corrupt installation.

Did you verify hashes of the ISO/installation media in some way? If not,
I suspect that's where your problem lies.

For those who don't know how to:
Start Live-System/ISO-Image with internet connected
Choose "Try Ubuntu"
Open "Terminal"
Type:
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get install apt

[Bug 1913218] Re: Obscure shortcut selector behaviour

2021-01-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

This is an upstream GNOME matter, and should better be discussed there.
OTOH, it looks like the discussion has already started.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1222

So possibly in GNOME 40 (Ubuntu 21.10).

However, in the meantime you can use another mechanism for setting input
source shortcuts. It's available in Tweaks (you need to install gnome-
tweaks) and allows several combinations which can currently not be
selected via Settings.

Well, it says "Press Esc to cancel", doesn't it?

Anyway, please feel free to report it upstream.

[Bug 1912826] Re: Knockd service fails to start due to missing dependency

2021-01-25 Thread Ivo Straka
I am not sure what exactly makes the error reproducible. I encounter
this error at work, on a computer with freshly installed Linux Mint 20.1
MATE.

1. install the package knockd
2. configure /etc/knockd.conf, set Interface
3. edit /etc/default/knockd to set START_KNOCKD=1
4. enable knockd.service
5. restart the system

I tried at home, where I run the same system (although not freshly
installed, but gradually upgraded), and knockd starts succcessfully.

I also remember having a similar problem some time ago on other machines
at work; at the time I solved it by placing a System V init script to
/etc/network/if-up.d/. This might mean that the problem depends on the
network.

If it helps, I can try installing Ubuntu on a side partition at work and
try it from scratch again. I suspect that maybe if the NetworkManager
takes too long to bring an interface online, knockd fails. The positions
of the syslog entries of NetworkManager and knockd correspond with the
error happening. In comment #4 of the linked RH bug, J. Ralston claims
that the After= condition is insufficient by itself if the service in
question requires a dependency to be fully up and running.

[Bug 1909665] Re: [MIR] ibus-libpinyin dependencies

2021-01-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Didier: The opencc docs file is now patched, and there is a symbols
file at last which allows building on all the architectures.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/opencc/1.1.1+git20200624+ds2-4ubuntu1

The build warnings have been reported upstream:

https://github.com/BYVoid/OpenCC/issues/551

Hopefully that's it for the MIR.

However, as regards the symbols file the solution is not ideal. We tweak
the symbols file for Ubuntu, since s390x seems to differ between Debian
and Ubuntu (bug #1912882). Great if you have an idea how to get back in
sync with Debian. This is the delta ATM:

[Bug 1913229] [NEW] Arrow keys do not select the folder on Desktop

2021-01-25 Thread Jalansh Munshi
Public bug reported:

1. Go to Desktop (Super + D). Not in the file explorer.
2. Press arrow keys to select files or folders.

Expected this to happen - Arrows keys should have selected the files or
folders.

What actually happened - Arrow keys do not select a folder or file. I
was only able to select by clicking it using mouse or touchpad.

[Bug 1913230] [NEW] Regression in kernel 5.10.0-12-generic - NVRM Xid 13 and 32, Gnome unusable

2021-01-25 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Desktop became unusable after updating kernel from 5.8 to 5.10. Kernel
spammed with NVRM Xid errors 13 and 32 reporting Graphics exception
MISSING_MACRO_DATA among other things. Same symptoms with nvidia drivers
450 and 460. Works, however, with the nouveau driver. Booting kernel 5.8
fixes the issue, but obviously isn't a long term solution.

[Bug 1912060] Re: [SRU] caribou: Segfault (as regression of xorg CVE-2020-25712 fix) cause security issue for cinnamon

2021-01-25 Thread Fantu
@Joshua Peisach: On ubuntu version released the only way to update is SRU:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
Do a backport (for example for focal in focal-backports) will require that user
enable backports (if not) and install it; user that don't know and do it will
not have the fix.
The patch have same changes to code and only changelog changes, version of the
caribou patched is also the same and there should be without risk, anyway I
tested build in focal installed and checked that issue is not reproducible
anymore (and no regression is showed); a fast test in groovy it would still be
better although it is very unlikely that there are differences on result.
