[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display
Just want to remind us that this was NOT AN ISSUE UNTIL after the September 2020 Ubuntu 20.04 updates that included the updates to 20.04.1. Therefore I have trouble with dismissing it as a known, unaddressed hardware issue. If so, why did it work fine prior to those updates? No: there were several old bugs (things that were fixed in Ubuntu in months even years past) that came back after those September updates. For example, the initramfs issues (and I just saw a number of initramfs-related updates in the most recent 20.04.1 updates) that have had to be fixed again. Going by the old adage of what changed last: this sure looks and feels like software rather than hardware... And George: yes this is on "initial" startup in the dock. I typically let the system run and just use screen blanking when it's docked; then do a shutdown when I'm leaving the office. I don't typically use suspend when it's docked; but when I have (to test) it has resumed normally: I press the spacebar to get the login prompt; enter the login; and the desktop reappears. I also don't hot dock or undock. That's part of the reason I don't suspend in the dock: if using suspend that way, then most likely the laptop will be undocked and re-docked while in suspend. So it will resume in a different configuration. Yes that should work, but I try not to "invite" trouble(!) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1841826 Title: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1841826/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display
So far this only occurs on the initial login after boot-up. Subsequent suspends do not cause an issue. If I remove the laptop from the dock no issue, but now I only have the laptop screen. The machine I'm using is a W530. For me this appears to be an initial boot-up only issue, of course I still would like to fix this. I can see where if used in lab environments it can be a serious issue, especially if your remote. I've seen Windows Sleep issues years ago, I haven't seen that many lately in Windows. Certain code can cause sleep issues for this laptop, power managers for one. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1841826 Title: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1841826/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display
Well, in the case of a Lenovo 4338, a quick google shows it is based on the SMSC2517, (https://joes-tech-blog.blogspot.com/2017/09/whats-inside- lenovo-docking-station-for.html) and well, another quick google show SMSC was aquired by Microchip, and after a third Google, I can tell you the USB controller chip and see that it even has published suspend- related errata that they do not plan on fixing that was discovered in Windows 8 days. Some excerpts below: Module 1: End of User Impacts: Port might fail to go into SUSPEND. Solution: This will not be addressed in a future version of the device. Module 2: End of User Impacts: Device might not enumerate. Solution: Use external power on reset circuit (for example, reset circuit with MAX809S(V2.9V) voltage supervisor) https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/8628A.pdf Likely these quirks are not being backported into the drivers, to workaround in software for certain scenarios, and so are being stumbled upon with more advanced multi-device scenarios now supported in newer Ubuntu versions. I would isolate the dock showing that the scenario works with a different port replicator/chip, and then either a) use the other port replicator b) reach out to the maintainer of the driver, see if you can give him some hardware, a reproducable scenario, you might be able to get a fix c) find a developer for hire, do the same, upstream a patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1841826 Title: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1841826/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display
@Tim Wetzel, Or maybe it's not just a matter of it being docked, but rather to do with the laptop lid being closed while being logged into!? I never tried this, but maybe if an external monitor, mouse and keyboard is connected without the laptop being docked, and the laptop is booted and before the laptop even starts booting the OS the lid is closed - so mimicking the way that the laptop boots while docked, but without it being docked. Would be interesting to see if the same problem occurs. If it did this would point to the problem stemming from the laptop lid being closed during login - regardless of whether or not the laptop is docked. I cannot recall the problem occurring while the laptop is docked with the lid open.

[Bug 978587] Re: apt should ensure .deb are not corrupted before handing them to dpkg
This is actually a security issue and it's surprising it's gone unfixed for 9 years. It's inconsistent for apt to check the hash on deb files that it downloads, but then neglect to do so on user-supplied deb files. The status quo is a recipe for disaster. To exacerbate the problem, the man page does not document the inconsistency or the fact that . There are a variety of ways to fix this: 1) apt could refuse to accept local .deb files 2) apt could require local .deb files to be supplied with a hash string (which would need a new CLI arg) 3) apt could print the hash to the string and instruct the user to confirm whether the hash matches 4) apt could check the repos it's aware of to see if the hash matches anything served by a trusted repo. If not, follow option 1 or 3 above. It's also important to note that users don't generally know how deb files are structured or how deb files are structured. Should they be responsible for knowing whether a hash is embedded within the deb file or not? Particularly when the man page makes no mention of it? Generally, the user might know that hashes are checked by the apt-* tools one way or another. The apt suite of tools (and docs for it) keep the user in the dark, and yet the user is responsible knowing how it works. The user is not served well in this case. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/978587 Title: apt should ensure .deb are not corrupted before handing them to dpkg To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/978587/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display
See comment #5 above. Yes, the nVidia driver may appear to be a common denominator BUT... I've seen the issue trigger apparently due to other things loading as opposed to nVidia's third party driver, so it may not be anything in the nVidia driver per se. The occurrences due to other utilities (like Dropbox or Logitech drivers) make me suspect a timing issue??? That something in the load sequence after logging in is timing out due to additional drivers and/or the timing "overhead" of a dock being present. And I say that because the same configuration on the same machine loads fine (no suspend at login) when used standalone out of the dock; but the issue recurs as soon as the machine is started back in the dock. And yes, this is both consistent and frustrating!
Lenovo 4338 Mini-Dock with Nvidia K1000M running Dual external monitors. Ubuntu 20.04 suspends after login as mentioned. This seemed to start after loading the Nvidia 390 driver since the Nouveau driver did not work correctly. The video is fine now and everything works fine except I login, the suspend occurs, I press the dock power button and the machine runs normally. My first assumption is its the video driver and I searched for suggested fixes or alternative drivers. Not sure which way to go seems like a few Lenovo users here are in the same place.

[Bug 1926972] Re: Xubuntu with LUKS FDE hangs upon boot after Hirsute upgrade
Apologies for the delayed follow-up to this. No, booting from any other medium works fine. I also got further in figuring out under what circumstances this happens, and it appears to be EFI-related. So if I bring up the boot media menu on boot, and manually choose the Ubuntu EFI partition (the only one), the system actually boots fine. But if I don't do this, and let it go to default, the problem consistently happens. I am not using Secure Boot (it's not supported by the system), and as mentioned I'm running the last BIOS available for this model. Tinkering with booting in legacy/BIOS mode has not been successful, and manually choosing Ubuntu EFI from the boot menu is currently the only way I've found to get the system to successfully boot. I have tried everything I can think of to rectify this, including completely reinstalling GRUB according to Boot-Repair's recommendations, but to no avail. Here's the output of Boot-Repair, which also did not fix the problem: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/jVvMSWwGxn/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926972 Title: Xubuntu with LUKS FDE hangs upon boot after Hirsute upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/1926972/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1930133] [NEW] Openbox font settings does not match with actual font for window titles
Public bug reported: Release: Lubuntu 21.04 (Focal and Impish as well) SW, version: obconf-qt, 0.16.0-1ubuntu1 How to reproduce: 1) Open 'Openbox Settings' from menu (Preferences->LXQt settings->Openbox Settings) 2) Navigate to 'Font' 3) Observe font settings and check with actual font on window title Expected: The fonts should be matching. Actual: The setting says 'Ubuntu Medium 11' for window titles. However, the window titles are 'DejaVu Sans (Sans Serif) 11pt'. Screenshot attached. Once, we click on the font option and select a font (including re- selecting 'Ubuntu Medium 11') the titlebar fonts change correctly. [Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS
This has become a security issue! So the kernels are now being built with impish, and unless people are using my PPA or building their own, then the last install-able kernel for LTS (focal) was 5.11.16. The 5.11.x series went EOL with 5.11.22, and all 5.11.x have a level 7.8 CVE: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2021-32606 As far as I can see this is still vulnerable up to and including 5.12.8. Linus applied the fix to his tree here: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/net/can?id=2b17c400aeb44daf041627722581ade527bb3c1d but that hasn't yet been applied to the stable 5.12.x branch. Ooops: https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2021/05/28/2 If you're using mainline on focal, then you might want to drop back to a 5.10.x release which doesn't have the vulnerability, or use my PPA, or follow one of the build instructions posted in this thread. ** CVE added: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=2021-32606 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926938 Title: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1926938/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1930125] [NEW] SRU: update gcc-9 and gcc-10 packages for focal, groovy and hirsute
Public bug reported: as done before in LP: #1879481 with GCC 9.3.0 and GCC 10.2.0, updating again to GCC 9.4.0 and GCC 10.3.0 in 20.04 LTS, 20.10 and 21.04. GCC 10.3.0 is already in 21.04 (hirsute), so no need to update that compiler there as well. - gcc-10, update to the gcc-10.3.0 release - gcc-9, update to the gcc-9.4.0 release - corresponding gcc-cross packages The package builds are prepared in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages built with only the security pocket enabled. [Impact] Provide an upstream release for GCC 10.3, and an upstream release for GCC 9.4. gcc-9 is the default compiler for focal, gcc-10 the default compiler for groovy. [Regression Potential] There is regression potential, however with a test rebuild of the main portion of the archive for both focal and groovy, we make sure that we don't see any regressions in package builds. [Test Case] No regressions in the GCC test suite, and no regressions in the test rebuild of the main component of the archive (all architectures). No test rebuild is done for hirsute, as gcc-9 is not the default compiler anymore. Also check that the rebuilt kernel boots on all architectures. TODO: As a test, a complete archive rebuild was performed, and no regressions were found with this new package. The archive rebuild also contained updated versions of gcc-9, gcc-10, python3.8, and python3 -stdlib-extensions. The GCC and Python packages should not infer with each other. [Validation] Analyze the GCC build logs for regressions. For the cross builds, just make sure that the packages build using the updated sources. [Bug 1930122] [NEW] When installing Kubuntu, the password inputs don't appear when choosing "physical volume for encryption"
Public bug reported: Summary: When installing Kubuntu, the password inputs don't appear when choosing "physical volume for encryption". After creating the partition, the password inputs also don't show, making impossible to install Kubuntu with manual encryption. After a while, an error appears: "unable to create the keyfile". Steps to reproduce: 1. In the Kubuntu installer, create a partition and choose "physical volume for encryption". Expected results: The password inputs should appear, just like in Ubuntu installer. ** Affects: kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "kubuntu installer vs ubuntu installer" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1930122/+attachment/5501000/+files/image.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1930122 Title: When installing Kubuntu, the password inputs don't appear when choosing "physical volume for encryption" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-meta/+bug/1930122/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
