[Bug 1912050] Re: Use after free in libgetdata v0.10.0 may lead to arbitrary code execution

2021-05-31 Thread Carlos Andres Ramirez
Thank you Alex, Steve,
The developer did not respond, so I guess Red Hat Security team decided to act
on the vulnerability advisory.

Thank you guys for following up on this.

[Bug 1905825] Re: [SRU] Disable CRTCs when system becomes headless

2021-05-31 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hello,

Just a note that mutter 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 has introduced a
regression in a VMware Horizon VDI environment, where gdm fails to
start, and has taken out several hundred VDIs.

I am tracking the issue in bug 1930359.

The plan is to make a test package with the patches from bug 1905825
reverted before we start digging into the point release patches from
1919143.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1930359] [NEW] gdm fails to start with latest mutter 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in focal-updates

2021-05-31 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

gdm fails to start in a VMware Horizon VDI environment, with Nvidia GRID
gpus passed into the VDIs.

Downgrading mutter from 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 to 3.36.1-3ubuntu3 in
-release fixes the issue, and the issue does not occur with
3.36.7+git20201123-0.20.04.1.

Currently looking into what landed in bug 1919143 and bug 1905825.

[Bug 1930312] Re: USB disks and SD cards mount for wrong user

2021-05-31 Thread Chris
Thanks Gordon, I can remember seeing the issue when running Linux Mint
back at version 17 - can't remember if it was under MATE (Caja) or
Cinnamon (nemo).

Can we as udisk to mount physical media in /media/[volume] and not in
the user-specific sub folders? For local users, that would be totally
acceptable (and even useful) to be able to share access to USB sticks
while plugged in.

[Bug 1930188] Re: Acer Aspire 5 sound driver issues

2021-05-31 Thread Bijay Shah
I tested this kernel here are my findings.

1. Headphones input/output are unplugged by default now

2. When I physically plug it in and select headphones input/output as
default, from next plug in it auto switches to headphones input/output
from internal input/output and vice versa.

2. Headphones microphone is working fine now, had to set mic boost(seems
to be tied to microphone sensitivity) in alsamixer to max to get good
sensitivity was set to 0 at first.

So, all issues I mentioned above seems to be solved but I have few extra small
issues and want to get some insights into it before fully marking this thread
as solved.

1. When internal microphone switches to external headphone microphone,
internal microphone is still on and keeps picking up compared to
internal speakers/headphones output where one or the other is muted
automatically.

2. In the legacy driver when earphones/headphones is plugged in internal
input/output devices shows as unavailable in pulse audio control and
can't be selected in gnome sound settings, in current driver seems like
all devices are active and can be switched without unplugging
headphones/earphones. I am not sure if this is something that needs to
be fixed.

3. I also notice few unplugged hdmi devices in pulse audio control which
are not shown when switching to legacy driver. Like HDMI1/DP1 Output,
HDMI2/DP2 Output, HDMI3/DP3 Output all of them are shown as unplugged.
Also, not sure if this is something that needs to be fixed.

If you could provide some insights on these 3 extra issues would really
appreciate it. Thanks again.

[Bug 1927866] Re: Root filesystem becomes readonly frequenty freezing system

2021-05-31 Thread anoopjohn
I finally gave up on the laptop. I am going to return this and get
another model. The crashes were making it unusable for my work. I tried.
I wiped clean the system. However I still have the device. I booted from
live usb and got the details. Please find below the details.

Thanks for everybody who tried to help on this thread. I am sorry I had
to give up as it was making it difficult for me to work with this. I
hope the thread will help somebody else to move forward the research on
this bug forward.

If there is something else that need to be pulled up before I return
this, please let me know and I will be happy to do that.

[Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-05-31 Thread MikeMecanic
This bug and there is no bug started in Mint 20.1 with Kernel 5.12-rc7
alongside the shim 1.46 multiple issues. Since then it works here secure
boot enabled or not.

The bug comes with a broken header and it kills update manager.

All we do here to make it work is to delete the broken header in
Synaptic, After, update manager runs normally. Same for the Kernel with
3 deb packages only. Give it a try, there is no side effect.

If you don't want me to test mainline Kernel in Mint (noise free), then
you have to remove the second header.

We never give up no matter what the problem is, even with 3 legs.

[Bug 1929370] Re: Backport support for the -lln command-line option to unsquashfs for 18.04

2021-05-31 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Alex, or anyone else affected,

Accepted squashfs-tools into bionic-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/squashfs-
tools/1:4.3-6ubuntu0.18.04.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

** Changed in: squashfs-tools (Ubuntu Bionic)
Status: In Progress => Fix Committed

[Bug 1898975] Re: xubuntu groovy qa-test install; no background & only boxes on greeter

2021-05-31 Thread Chris Guiver
I've not tagged it again (in QA-test), so no evidence of re-occurrence.

I just completed a QA-test install (impish) to
- sony vaio svp112a1cw (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

all looks good, I also rebooted the device twice and greeter had
background images both times.

(the case where it was reported was a 'replace partition; manual
partitioning' type of install; I did a full disk (clean) install
today... this box was running a xubuntu hirsute (final RC with
encryption) so it didn't regularly occur)

[Bug 1930304] Re: Horizontal scroll over dock causes it to crash and disappear, and a temporary GUI freeze

2021-05-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but I'm not sure that section of log is relevant here. And even
if it is, there's not enough information so...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1912371] security audit

2021-05-31 Thread Alex Murray
I reviewed libftdi1 1.5-5build1 as checked into impish. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

libftdi1 is a library and CLI tool (ftdi-eeprom) for reading/writing to
FTDI chips used in many USB-Serial converters and other USB peripheral
controllers.

- No CVE History
- Relevant Build-Depends
  - libusb-1.0, libconfuse2
- pre/post inst/rm scripts
  - python3-ftdi contains prerm/postinst scripts auto-generated by
dh_python3 to precompile its python code
- No init scripts
- No systemd units
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries
- binaries in PATH
  - ftdi-eeprom provides:

-rwxr-xr-x root/root 30952 2020-12-08 19:01
./usr/bin/ftdi_eeprom

which is a CLI tool to read/write to the EEPROM of FTDI chips

  - libftdi1-dev provides:

-rwxr-xr-x root/root 1276 2020-12-08 19:01
./usr/bin/libftdi1-config

which is a CLI tool similar to pkg-config, used to get CFLAGS/LDFLAGS
for applications that want to link against libftdi
- No sudo fragments
- No polkit files
- No udev rules
- No cron jobs
- unit tests / autopkgtests
  - unit tests are run during the build - this does a very test to just
init the library, and also to test the code which calculates baud rates
  - autopkgtest runs the same tests as the unit test but recompiles it from
scratch
  - these tests are only very basic so it would be useful for more tests to
be added to ensure other parts of libftdi1 are tested to avoid any
regressions on future changes
- No significant warnings/errors etc seen in the build logs

- No processes spawned
- Memory management appears to be careful and defensive, return values are
checked on allocation and bounds are respected on memcpy(), memmove() is
  used where appropriate etc
- File IO
  - libftdi does no direct file IO - libusb is used to interface with USB
devices, whilst ftdi-eeprom uses a configuration file which is handled
by libconfuse2 - the path to this is specified on the command-line
- No logging in libftdi other than printing errors when failing to parsing
configuration options in ftdi-eeprom - these are safe from format string
  vulns
- No environment variable usage
- No use of privileged functions
- No use of cryptography / random number sources etc
- No use of temp files
- No use of networking
- No use of WebKit
- No use of PolicyKit

- No significant cppcheck results
- No significant Coverity results (all false-positives or just minor issues
in test/example code, not in the actual library/application code)

libfdti1 appears well written and quite defensive, plus seems well
maintained upstream and does not have any history of security
issues. Whilst there is some small unit tests already present it would be
useful if these could be expanded to test more of the functionality of the
library etc to try and ensure any future regressions that may be introduced
via security updates etc can be caught in testing before being released.

Security team ACK for promoting libftdi1 to main.

[Bug 1927808] Re: rtw88_8821ce causes freeze

2021-05-31 Thread Paul Szabo
Just wondering (maybe I am way off ...).
In kernel code I often see segments like
  lock(thing)
  do stuff
  unlock(thing)
but in drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtw88/main.c there is:

void rtw_core_stop(struct rtw_dev *rtwdev)
{
...
mutex_unlock(>mutex);
...
mutex_lock(>mutex);
...
}

and that seems back-to-front. Is that as should be?

[Bug 1930312] Re: USB disks and SD cards mount for wrong user

2021-05-31 Thread Gordon N. Squash
For the record, this is not specific to Ubuntu or Ubuntu MATE at all --
I see this on Gentoo regularly, for example. It seems to be caused by a
race condition in Caja and UDisks which didn't appear until UDisks
started mounting volumes under user-specific subdirectories of `/media`
-- so for example `user1` has volumes mounted under `/media/user1` and
`user2` has volumes mounted under `/media/user2`. In ye olden days,
`user1`'s UDisks-utilizing process (such as Caja) would mount the
volume; `user2`'s instance of Caja would wait for the volume to get
mounted by `user1`'s Caja, then open the shared mountpoint at
`/media/[volume]`. Nowadays this doesn't work in any case, since
`user1` puts in the request to mount the volume first and the volume is
mounted under `user1`'s private mount directory --
`/media/user1/[volume]`. I'm not sure how to fix this yet, though.
Maybe (but just a WAG) UDisks needs some kind of integration with the
display manager or logind?

2021-05-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

(this is a different issue than bug #1923505)

On ppc64el, building firefox 89.0 with clang 10 (the highest version of
clang currently available for bionic and focal, either in the release or
the security pocket) hangs forever when compiling gfx/wr/swgl/src/gl.cc.

This regression was introduced by this upstream change:
https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D109657.

[Bug 1925843] Re: Linux 5.8.0-49+ fails to resume from suspend

2021-05-31 Thread Steven
I am not terribly familiar with the git and make commands so I want to
give a full account of my process in case I did something wrong.

First, I can confirm that 5.12-rc8 is the last kernel that doesn't work
for me and 5.13-rc2 is the first one that does.

I am skipping over 5.13-rc1 because I don't believe I can install it on my
machine. It doesn't seem to be compatible with my Nvidia drivers as per this
error:
ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-5.13.0-051300rc1-generic is
not supported
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.13.0-051300rc1-generic
(x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/460.73.01/build/make.log for more information.

Maybe I am just unwilling to mess with drivers enough to make it work,
though.

As for the bisect, I ran 'apt build-dep linux' (after checking 'Source
Code' in Software and Updates so I could actually find the right
packages) and cloned the git repository.

Using 5.12-rc8 as the last non-working kernel and 5.13-rc2 as the first working
kernel, I ran:
cd linux
git bisect start
git bisect good v5.13-rc2
git bisect bad v5.12-rc8

This simply returned:
Bisecting: a merge base must be tested
[bf05bf16c76bb44ab5156223e1e58e26dfe30a88] Linux 5.12-rc8

which I didn't find particularly helpful. I had to use 'good' and 'bad'
instead of 'new' and 'old' because the latter returned '[a string of
numbers] is both old and new', which seemed wrong.

To build the new kernel, I ran:
make olddefconfig
make localmodconfig
make -j`nproc` deb-pkg

This gave several warnings, but seemed to run OK. I can attached a file
with the outputs if you want.

It looks like it just built 5.12-rc8, although maybe the file name is
misleading.

I assume to install this kernel I should install the four .deb that make made:
linux-headers-5.12.0-rc8_5.12.0-rc8-1_amd64.deb
linux-image-5.12.0-rc8_5.12.0-rc8-1_amd64.deb
linux-image-5.12.0-rc8-dbg_5.12.0-rc8-1_amd64.deb
linux-libc-dev_5.12.0-rc8-1_amd64.deb

I will do that when I have some time to test the new kernel unless I
hear from you first. Hopefully, I did everything right.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[Bug 1930311] Re: the screen lags and freezes when switching to activities overview

2021-05-31 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1930311/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1883785] Re: intermittent boot failure dell inspiron 3593

2021-05-31 Thread Johann Gail
The Inspiron 3593 does not have a dedicated Trusted Platform Module (TPM
2.0), but instead the successor Intel® Platform Trust Technology (Intel®
PTT). Disabling this PTT in BIOS security settings has *NOT* improved
anything.

Workaround #1 does not work for me.
Entering 'rmmod tpm' leads to 'command failed', like most of other commands too.

For me workaround #2 (unloading tpm module) seems to work. Boot never
failed since the last 2 days and around 20 cold and warm reboots.

I suspect the root cause in my case was the automatic the update of the
grub-efi-amd64-bin from 2.02 (bionic-security) to 2.04 (bionic-updates).
I have not yet tried a downgrade of the packages due to limited access
to the device.

[Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-05-31 Thread Martin Pecka
Ok, this gets emotional, so let's concentrate on what's important.

Is there anyone speaking for the official mainline builds? What problems
would it bring to change the policy and build the mainline kernels with
latest (or even oldest!) LTS tooling?

It is apparent that the community would benefit from it. It is
understandable that Ubuntu doesn't want to "officially support" mainline
kernels (just because they're a kind of testing stuff), but apparently
there are people (disclosure: including myself) who need to run mainline
kernels on older distros (Bionic in my case). It is completely fine to
run into problems with a mainline kernel, but why add hurdles to those
who want or need to try?

[Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-05-31 Thread DanglingPointer
What a joke! So how is the community going to contribute, help, and
support the mainline kernels for "debug purposes" now?

Everyone on LTS that wants mainline will now be forced to compile their
own kernels or arbitrarily trust PPAs of unofficial 3rd parties if
choosing to stay with Ubuntu.

@David R Bergstein,
Your other alternative to 3rd party unofficial PPA's or compiling your own is
ditching Ubuntu altogether and switching to rolling release distros like
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed or Fedora.

[Bug 1795483] Re: Experimental setting to enable fractional Hi-DPI scaling offers no option larger than 200% on 15.6 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display (Dell XPS 15 9575)

2021-05-31 Thread Mario Vukelic
Thank you, I tested the new values and it all works as expected for me.
However, not sure what it is but the 225% value seems to change the rendering
in an unpleasant way. Not sure if it's only not being used to it, but for the
time being it feels more "comfortable" reverting to 200% and upping the font
scaling a bit, as I did before.

[Bug 1927866] Re: Root filesystem becomes readonly frequenty freezing system

2021-05-31 Thread anoopjohn
Crashed multiple times. That shows that the symptom is happening
frequently. Now trying to use the system for a while in Windows to see
if it crashes at all. Have not had a crash on windows but I have not
used in windows much. Will try to use in windows for a while to see if
any crash happens in windows at all.

[Bug 1690719] Re: Mouse pointer randomly pauses/stutters in gnome shell Wayland sessions

2021-05-31 Thread Vincent Chernin
The backported input thread patches mainly laid a foundation to solve
this issue. Mutter still needs more work to take advantage of the new
input thread. That is why there isn't an improvement in GNOME 40.

This is described here: https://blogs.gnome.org/shell-dev/2021/01/21
/threaded-input-adventures/

> The main thread is still in charge of KMS, and updating the cursor
plane buffer and position. This means the pointer cursor will still
freeze if the main thread stalled, despite the input thread handling
events underneath. In the future, There would be another separate thread
handling atomic KMS operations, so it’d be possible for the input and
KMS threads to talk between them and bypassing any main thread stalls.

[Bug 1914044] Re: [SRU] gstreamer fails with "cannot allocate memory in static TLS block" error on aarch64

2021-05-31 Thread Balint Reczey
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

gstreamer cannot load some plugins on 20.04, aarch64 due to TLS memory
exhaustion, so these plugins cannot be used. See LP: #1846837 and LP:
  #1914030.

This is solved apparently on glibc 2.32:
  https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=25051
  by patch

https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=glibc.git;h=ffb17e7ba3a5ba9632cee97330b325072fbe41dd

  [Test Case]

Running totem-video-thumbnailer shows TLS error in the version not
fixed, generates thumbnail with the fixed version:

  $ sudo apt -y install totem gstreamer1.0-libav
  ...
  $ wget
https://ia800201.us.archive.org/12/items/BigBuckBunny_328/BigBuckBunny_512kb.mp4
  ...
  $ totem-video-thumbnailer BigBuckBunny_512kb.mp4 thumbnail.png
  ...
  (totem-video-thumbnailer:3602): GStreamer-WARNING **: 18:36:10.466: Failed to
load plugin '/usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-1.0/libgstlibav.so':
/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libgomp.so.1: cannot allocate memory in static TLS block
  ...

  [Where problems could occur]

This is delicate code in glibc with quite regression potential. Said
this, the code is in the next major release (2.32, while focal has
2.31), which has been running groovy for a while.

Also, apparently there is a 2.31 patch for groovy, before it moved to
  2.32: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=964141

Regressions in 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 have been observed in LP: #1926379 and
- LP: #1926387.
+ LP: #1926355.

Definitely was caused by that, as disabling systemd-resolved did solve
the long waits. It also explains why Ubuntu had this since quite a long
time, as they switched to systemd-resolved about 3 years ago, in 16.10.
That explains why someone mentioned in a comment that 16.04 doesn't have
the issue, and 17.04 has this issue.

I still can't connect to any battle net servers, which I will need to
investigate and probably report separately (unless it was fixed by other
bugfix, I saw some recent changes related to battle net games in wine),
but at least the resources are loaded quickly.
