Thanks Brett, that confirms they are the same root cause and fixed by the same
solution.
Thanks.
And it also confirms that the test steps I've got from you will apply here.

[Bug 1933950] Re: I have a black screen when I login in. I have to login through a later version

2021-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. This sounds like it might be a regression in the Intel kernel
graphics driver "i915" in version 5.8.0-59 since that's probably what's
driving your primary monitor, but the Bug Description also mentions that
your Nvidia driver is broken for that kernel version:

 nvidia, 460.80, 5.8.0-59-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff
between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and
installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)

Please try:

1. Uninstall the Nvidia driver.
2. Reboot.
3. Reinstall the Nvidia driver.
4. Reboot.

and tell us if the problem still happens.

[Bug 1934048] [NEW] Cannot upgrade Ubuntu mate 18.04 to 20.04

2021-06-29 Thread Toto
Public bug reported:

This is a similar bug as Bug #1887544 which I have been following for 6 month
but is now closed.
"upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 fails to calculate if python-dbg is installed".

@Brian Murray (brian-murray) suggested :
"Could you please open a new bug report using "ubuntu-bug
ubuntu-release-upgrader"? Once you've done that let me know and I'll have a
look at the logs."

I could do this update on two other Unbuntu mate 18.04 machines (that I
use less. ie fewer softwares).

You should have the logs attached. Let me know if you need me to do extra
actions.
I have tried 10 times to upgrade the past motnhes.

I will also add information that this happened in version 20.04 (I had it at
the beginning). I thought the problem was in the version and first updated to
20.10. It did not help. Then I upgraded to version 21. It didn't help either.
I am currently using 20.10 version.

The version higher than 5.8.0.59 does not work. I also made commands under the
root in this version today.
apt update
apt upgrade
But it still doesn't work.

5.8.0.25 works. Loading. I can't see a black screen and can adjust the
brightness of the screen.

[Bug 1931787] Re: Keyboard/touchpad unresponsive after 5.8/20.04 upgrade

2021-06-29 Thread Owen Cameron
** Description changed:

- After I recently replaced broken screen on HP Spectre x360 G2, keyboard and
touchpad became irresponsive - but only after booting. Booting with old kernel
(e.g. 5.4.0-42) restored full control. Also, disabling acpi restored control
(but one wants to see battery level so this hack is insufficient). Evidently,
it is not hardwear problem.

[Bug 1934044] [NEW] openssl removed ssl2/3 and broke cURL because curl uses openssl instead of libssl

2021-06-29 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

cURL supports a -ssl3 option (and rightly so), but openssl removed it
prematurely (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssl/+bug/1934040). The
fallout:

torsocks curl --insecure --ssl-allow-beast -ssl3 -vvI
https://xhfheq5i37waj6qb.onion:110 2>&1
*   Trying 127.42.42.0:110...
* Connected to xhfheq5i37waj6qb.onion (127.42.42.0) port 110 (#0)
* OpenSSL was built without SSLv3 support
* Closing connection 0

Is it possible that curl's check for ssl3 is flawed? I say that because
both curl and fetchmail are dependant on the same libssl pkg, and yet
fetchmail can still do ssl3 but curl can't. Neither curl nor fetchmail
names "openssl" as a dependency. So curl perhaps should not look to the
openssl package to detect ssl3 capability.

SSL3 is still useful for onion sites, so curl should do the necessary to
retain that capability.

[Bug 1934040] [NEW] openssl s_client's '-ssl2' & '-ssl3' options gone, prematurely!

2021-06-29 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

SSL2 and SSL3 have been hastily removed, apparently by developers who
are unaware that these protocols serve purposes other than encryption.
SSL2/3 is *still used* on onion sites. Why? For verification. An
onion site has inherent encryption, so it matters not how weak the SSL
crypto is when the purpose is purely to verify that the server is owned
by who they say it's owned by.

Proof that disclosure attacks on ssl2/3 are irrelevant to onion sites:

https://blog.torproject.org/tls-certificate-for-onion-site

So here is a real world impact case. Suppose you get your email from
one of these onion mail servers:

http://onionmail.info/directory.html

Some (if not all) use ssl2/3 on top of Tor's inherent onion tunnel.
They force users to use ssl2/3, so even if a user configures the client
not to impose TLS, the server imposes it. And it's reasonable because
the ssl2/3 vulns are orthoganol to the use case.

Some users will get lucky and use a mail client that still supports
ssl2/3. But there's still a problem: users can no longer use openssl to
obtain the fingerprint to pin. e.g.

$ openssl s_client -proxy 127.0.0.1:8118 -connect xhfheq5i37waj6qb.onion:110
-showcerts
CONNECTED(0003)
140124399195456:error:1408F10B:SSL routines:ssl3_get_record:wrong version
number:../ssl/record/ssl3_record.c:331:

New, (NONE), Cipher is (NONE)
Secure Renegotiation IS NOT supported
Compression: NONE
Expansion: NONE
No ALPN negotiated
Early data was not sent
Verify return code: 0 (ok)
---

That's openssl version 1.1.1k

Being denied the ability to pin the SSL cert is actually a *degredation*
of security. Cert Pinning is particularly useful with self-signed
certs, as is often the scenario with onion sites.

[Bug 1882411] Re: lubuntu monitor settings touching screens with gap between

2021-06-29 Thread Chris Guiver

pro/xt)
+ - dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400
pro/xt)

As part of post-install checks, I ensure all disk space is utilized.
and finally adjust displays to match the machines setup. It was at this
'adjust displays to match' that this problem occurred.

My two displays are positioned "landscape + portrait(left-tilt)."
(left display is 1280x1024, right is 1024x768 on this setup)

  ** Synopsis

There is a 'hidden' gap between my displays which shouldn't be there.

  ** Description

The Monitor settings have been adjusted to match (see screen.jpg) with
APPLY already pressed. I cannot move the displays closer
(Keep.monitors.attached is clicked), yet windows disappear as if a gap
exists between displays, and I have to keep dragging mouse to left
awhile to get from my.right monitor before it appears in my.left monitor
.. the gap correctly portrays to the BLACK dark section seen in
  screen.jpg

  ** Expected Results

Mouse should move between my.left and my.right monitors as if there is
no gap, windows should not disappear (you cannot see left edge of
Monitor.Settings window in screen.jpg) in this gap..

[Bug 1924689] Re: Can see some garbage at the edge of the window after changing scale

2021-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Mutter keeps multiple copies of window-related things, moreso on X11
where the server is a separate process with its own idea of how big a
window is. That also means a window gets resized in multiple processes
at slightly different times. So it's easy to mess up in mutter and get
bugs like this (I have done in the past).

2021-06-29 Thread Yao Wei
Tried modifying the source code of gnome-initial-setup, found that this
issue cannot be reproduced, if the titlebar of the window (gis-
assistant) is not set in the main (gis-driver) window.

I think this issue can be worked around in gis-assistant, but the root
cause might be either gnome-initial-setup, mutter or libgtk-3

[Bug 1934028] [NEW] Update to version 3.26.6

2021-06-29 Thread crvi
Public bug reported:

Dear Maintainer,

1. Quite a lot of RSS and Atom related fixes have gone into 3.26.6. This
provides better RSS / Atom data to apps ( e.g. Rhythmbox ).

2. Parsing feeds is now faster ( 150x ) for some feeds ( e.g. bbc ) in
debian/ubuntu, now that videosite checking is disabled unless explicitly
requested.

Refer https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem-pl-parser/-/issues/25 for more
details.

3. Garbage CDATA issue has been fixed in xine xml parser.

Refer https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem-pl-parser/-/issues/30 for more

[Bug 1882411] Re: lubuntu monitor settings touching screens with gap between

package change ^ was suggested by Dan/kc2bez

I just confirmed the issue still occurs on opensuse tumbleweed.
Tumbleweed wasn't fully updated (packages updating now), however

VERSION = 2021.06.20
lxqt 0.17.0
liblxqt 0.17.0
Qt 5.15.2

I see some Qt5 libs being updated... some are LXQt it turns out, so I'll
let it complete.. logout & try again & amend this if necessary.

  * d/p/Make-the-example-config-valid.patch: comment out the node name in

have in Bionic which is using the output of "uname -n" as the node name.

[Bug 1933707] Re: Many ACPI errors

2021-06-29 Thread Alex Hung
There are two types of ACPI errors: AE_NOT_FOUND and AE_ALREADY_EXISTS,
and both of them are the result of BIOS bugs

AE_NOT_FOUND: BIOS declares but does not defines them, and accessing them
generates failures - this includes both USB port and touchpad declaration.

AE_ALREADY_EXISTS: BIOS defines the same variables twice and kernel
complains when it parses the second one.

These must be fixed in BIOS so you need to report to Acer, and nothing
can be done in Linux kernel. Having say that, these BIOS code can be for
dummy devices. If you aren't seeing USB ports and touch failures, they
can be safely ignored.

[Bug 1934020] Re: prefect

2021-06-29 Thread Erich Eickmeyer 
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu
that you are using.

Thank you!

[Bug 1930359] Re: gdm fails to start in a VMware Horizon VDI environment with latest mutter 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in focal-updates

2021-06-29 Thread Matthew Ruffell
The affected user cannot reproduce the issue anymore. The new mutter
packages install fine in their environment, and gdm starts every time.
They have since rolled out the new mutter packages to their fleet
without any issues.

I'm going to mark this bug as invalid, as we can't reproduce the issue
anymore.

Maybe it was a temporary issue with restarting services? I'm not sure.

If the affected user ever experiences the issue again, I will re-open.
