2021-11-03 Thread Chad Smith
@brian-murray the verification-done-impish tag may be unnecessary here
by me. My above verification on impish may have just been supplemental
as 0.99.13 already had released which provided ESM awareness on Impish.
That said, I revalidated this because the current 0.99.13.1 also touched
that same logic and I wanted to confirm no regression.

2021-11-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1919400 ***

Public bug reported:

If booted with the monitor turned off then there is only one login
option 'Ubuntu' and it is a Xorg session.

This appears to be a result of GDM's normal "try Wayland and if it
doesn't work then hide it". But since Xorg seems to be more resilient in
this case it suggests we can do better for Wayland too. But I'm not sure
if only gdm3 or only mutter (Wayland) needs fixing.

[Bug 1949572] Re: freeze after back-to-back left and right click on the app in the dock

2021-11-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1949652] [NEW] Improve performance by changing the block size to 8M

2021-11-03 Thread Yao Wei
Public bug reported:

This issue is found in usb-creator 0.3.11 in impish.

I found that creating USB disks in GNOME Disks is 2x faster than Startup
Disk Creator, and here's the comparison:

Startup Disk Creator: 1:52
GNOME Disks: 0:37
With a Sandisk Extreme Pro USB drive (CZ880) and a 4.0G image

After I changed the default block_size from 100 to 8388608 in
USBCreator._builtin_dd function in the Python file /usr/share/usb-
creator/usb-creator-helper, this can improve the writing speed and
making it about 0:30 to write the same disk image.

[Bug 1945590] Re: Thinkpad E14 Gen2: Kernel panic with trackpad and trackpoint enabled

2021-11-03 Thread elguavas
well let's be clear here: none of the workarounds suggested in this
thread are fixes, nor are they meant to be, they are workarounds only,
to allow some functionality until the actual fix arrives.

the actual fix will be a new kernel package release that has the
underlying stack corruption bug fixed.

that said, it would be great to get an update here from the bug assignee
Andrea, or someone on the ubuntu kernel team. we fully realise the bug
is in the upstream linux kernel, and has to be fixed there, but an
update on how that fix is progressing, or even a pointer to the upstream
kernel bug report would be really great thanks. ;)

[Bug 1949647] [NEW] When changing the driver for any printer the driver program just continues searching infinitely

2021-11-03 Thread Charles McColm
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

I first experienced this at work on an Asus machine with an i7-3770 CPU,
16GB of RAM. I connected an HP Laserjet 1020. Xubuntu appeared to
configure and install a driver, but wouldn't print a test page. (Not an
issue with other printers on the same system) So I tried changing the
Make and Model of the printer. When I clicked Change beside the Make and
Model dialog box the Change Driver "Searching" dialog appeared, but it
just sits infinitely looking for drivers.

I thought it might be some odd relationship between the machine and
printer so I tried a different system at work and a different printer (a
brother printer which Xubuntu found and printing worked). Same issue
trying to change the Make and Model. Also tried at home thinking it
might be an issue with our PXE installed Xubuntu, but same issue (USB
installed).

[Bug 1949532] Re: ubuntu_ltp_controllers tests failing on Impish

2021-11-03 Thread Luke Nowakowski-Krijger
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1942113

Here is a discussion about recent regressions in systemd tests where its
stated that the cgroups are set up in "unified" (v2) mode in
248.3-1ubuntu5 systemd package. 248.3-1ubuntu7 became the release
package on 2021-09-27 which was around the start of the cycle that we
started seeing this issues (did we see this before then?), which means
that it could very likely have been this upgrade that caused it. Even if
earlier packages were in updates I am pretty sure that the machine needs
to be restarted for the systemd changes to take affect, which I am
pretty sure our test machines don't restart after updating during
deployment. So it would make sense that we are seeing the errors
correlating with the new systemd package hitting release.

I also re-ran tests on previous kernels which didnt have these issues
and they are now reporting all the errors, which also points to this
being a problem with the systemd package upgrade.

In the meantime, it seems that these tests are broken and we should just
hint the whole ubuntu_ltp_controllers test suite.

[Bug 216847] Re: sshd will not start at boot if ListenAddress is set, because network interface is not yet up

2021-11-03 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
It seems like I can't add another Debian bug reference to this bug, but
I found this one to be a very interesting read:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=982950

In a nutshell, although the "After=network-online.target" change can be
considered to be a workaround here, I find it quite unlikely that the
Debian maintainer (and therefore Ubuntu) will accept a patch proposing
to use this statement in openssh's systemd service file. You can find a
rationale by Colin in the bug I mentioned above.

In a way, I think this bug is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/1918141, and we
still don't seem to have a good "silver bullet" for these cases...

[Bug 1742761] Re: Drop dh-apport to reduce delta with Debian

2021-11-03 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
dh-apport (and apport in general) has since been removed from
experimental, and I don't think it will be part of unstable/testing
anytime soon because the previous maintainer has expressed that he's
lost interest in the package, as can be seen here:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=924960

We still can install net-snmp's apport hooks by hand and suggest the
changes to the Debian package, though. Depending on the maintainer, I
think he/she will gladly accept them (since they're pretty much a no-op
there now).

[Bug 1784152] Re: i2c_hid_get_input floods system logs

2021-11-03 Thread velocity303
As Paul D. just described I am also seeing this on my Razer Blade Pro 17
2021. I'm assuming this and the 15 inch probably use the same
touchpad/driver.

I've seen this on Kubuntu 21.10 and with kernel 5.13. Will try with some
newer kernels too but 5.15 completely broke suspend, so will need to
troubleshoot that first before I can tell if it fixes the touchpad issue
after suspend. Installing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics also made no
difference.

[Bug 1949641] Re: command-line invocation doesn't find stdlib

2021-11-03 Thread Michael Nahas
The Agda people responded with the following on
https://github.com/agda/agda/issues/5631

Hmmm. The package does not even seem to install the .agda-lib file:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/all/agda-stdlib/filelist

So a potential workaround would be to:

Copy this file into /usr/share/agda-stdlib
Add the line /usr/share/agda-stdlib/standard-library.agda-lib in
~/.agda/libraries-2.6.0.1
Add the line standard-library in ~/agda/defaults

and this should allow you to bypass having to explicitly pass -i

[Bug 1949643] [NEW] iptables-persistent unconditionally drops existing iptables rules

2021-11-03 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

The iptables-persistent plugins/{15-ip4tables,25-ip6tables}
use ip[6]tables-restore without --noflush unconditionally.

This doesn't play along well with ufw, which starts before
netfilter-persistent typically, and gets its rules flushed.

This makes `ufw status` return that ufw is disabled, which
is misleading, as `ufw.service` is enabled and ufw actually
loaded all its rules correctly (but they were flushed later.)

Some images ship iptables-persistent rules, thus are subject
to this issue if ufw is used.

[Workaround]

Disable the netfilter-persistent.service unit, after rules
have been migrated to ufw.

[Fix]

Proposed in Debian bug #998416 [1]

[Test Steps]

See the Debian bug.

[Bug 1949641] [NEW] command-line invocation doesn't find stdlib

2021-11-03 Thread Michael Nahas
Public bug reported:

I tried using literate Agda on Ubuntu. I was able to run Agda perfectly
in Emacs. It loaded libraries without any problem. But I tried to run
agda on the command-line, it had trouble with finding libraries.

Both
`agda --html --html-highlight=code NahasTutorialModule.lagda.md`
and
`agda NahasTutorialModule.lagda.md`
generated the following error:

```
Checking NahasTutorialModule
(/mnt/mass_storage/Desktop/Home/projects/Math_DB/Tools/Agda/NahasTutorialModule.lagda.md).
/mnt/mass_storage/Desktop/Home/projects/Math_DB/Tools/Agda/NahasTutorialModule.lagda.md:701,8-51
Failed to find source of module
Relation.Binary.PropositionalEquality in any of the following
locations:
/mnt/mass_storage/Desktop/Home/projects/Math_DB/Tools/Agda/Relation/Binary/PropositionalEquality.agda
/mnt/mass_storage/Desktop/Home/projects/Math_DB/Tools/Agda/Relation/Binary/PropositionalEquality.lagda
  /usr/share/libghc-agda-dev/lib/prim/Relation/Binary/PropositionalEquality.agda
/usr/share/libghc-agda-dev/lib/prim/Relation/Binary/PropositionalEquality.lagda
when scope checking the declaration
  import Relation.Binary.PropositionalEquality as Eq
```

It looks like agda, when invoked on the command-line, is looking in the
wrong place for the standard libraries.

After some searching, I found that the libraries were located at:
/usr/share/agda-stdlib. I was able to get around the problem with:
`agda -i /usr/share/agda-stdlib/ --html --html-highlight=code
NahasTutorialModule.lagda.md`

[Bug 1949640] [NEW] Hirsute update: upstream stable patchset 2021-11-03

2021-11-03 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to

a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1832998] Re: Pure-FTPd Breaks with OpenSSL v1.1.1

2021-11-03 Thread Robie Basak
> Where problems could occur

I think another area where things could go wrong is in regressing
clients that use older protocol versions that are currently working.
Could you add something to the Test Plan to do a smoke test in this area
please? I'm not sure how to do this comprehensively, but at least this
would confirm that we aren't breaking the entire world of older protocol
clients or similar.

[Bug 1832998] Please test proposed package

2021-11-03 Thread Robie Basak
Hello Michael, or anyone else affected,

Accepted pure-ftpd into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pure-
ftpd/1.0.46-1ubuntu18.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1949634] Re: [SRU] ubuntu-advantage-tools (27.3 -> 27.4) Xenial, Bionic, Focal, Hirsute, Impish

2021-11-03 Thread Lucas Albuquerque Medeiros de Moura
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
This releases will turn on the metering job by default. The metering job will
report which services are being used to the contract server every 4 hours.
Since we already have the timer mechanism in place, we believe the substantial
risk for this release is that the job may not work
as intended and fail during the execution. However, this will not block any
of the other existing jobs from running, so it should be a low risk addition.

Furthermore, these are the additional functionalities we are adding:

  * Make cc-eal a non-beta service
  * Update ua fix return code:
- - exit 0 when fix is successfully applied and completed
- - exit 1 when fix cannot be applied
- - exit 2 when fix requires a reboot to complete
+   - exit 0 when fix is successfully applied and completed
+   - exit 1 when fix cannot be applied
+   - exit 2 when fix requires a reboot to complete
  * Allow livepatch to be enabled together with fips-updates
  * New security-status subcommand that lists potentially available security
and ESM updates
  * Set PYTHONPATH during postinst to avoid problems that happen when users
have a custom python installation (LP: #1930121)

Additionally, we are also addressing some bugs we found along the way:

  * Do not use proxy configuration when reaching clouds IMDS endpoint during
auto-attach operation
  * Attach will save machine-id during operation
  * Detach won't ask unnecessary questions
- (For example, when ROS is enabled we don't want to notify user about
dependent services, since all services will be disabled anyway)
+   (For example, when ROS is enabled we don't want to notify user about
dependent services, since all services will be disabled anyway)

See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.

  [Test Case]
The following development and SRU process was followed:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAdvantageToolsUpdates

The ubuntu-advantage-tools team will be in charge of attaching the artifacts
and
console output of the appropriate run to the bug. ubuntu-advantage-tools team
members will not mark ‘verification-done’ until this has happened.

-
  [Regression Potential]
In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
aforementioned integration tests are attached to this bug.

Since we are adding a new job, we need to make sure that if it fails we will
not interfere
with any of the other jobs that were already delivered on release 27.3.
Currently, our script
that handles the job execution should cover this. If the metering job fails
it should just add a new log entry into /var/log/ubuntu-advantage-timer.log.

For the ua fix update, we don't think we can cause a regression, since
the command was always returning 0, no matter what happened during the
execution. We believe the new return codes are better now.

+ Additionally, we are now also setting up the PYTHONPATH during postinst.
+ This should not change the behavior of any of the python commands we are
issuing, we just want to guarantee that users with a custom python install
+ will not be affected when performing an install/upgrade operation here.
However, we are now adding a dependency on the env command during an
install/upgrade operation and this is a postinst change and it could cause
+ unexpected regressions, even though we currently believe the new change does
not pose a high risk of regression.
+
The other fixes are either bug fixes or service changes (cc-eal) that
should not pose a regression risk on current behavior of the ua client,
since our tests are passing with those new changes.

  [Discussion]
The addition of the new job was tested by the contracts team and it seems to
be working fine. However, we will need to keep an eye open to see if the
metering job is working as expected and delivering the desired information to
the contract backend.

  [Changelog]

-* d/tools.postinst:
- - hardcode python binary and PYTHONPATH (LP: #1930121)
- - undo unnecessary log file creation
- * New upstream release 27.4
- - cc-eal: remove beta flag
- - cli:
- + attach will save machine-id during operation
- + detach won't ask unnecessary questions
- + new security-status subcommand lists potentially available
- security and ESM updates (beta)
- - fix:
- + exit 0 when fix is successfully applied and completed
- + exit 1 when fix cannot be applied
- + exit 2 when fix requires a reboot to complete
- + check reboot-required.pkgs for better reboot suggestions
- - livepatch: allow livepatch and fips-updates at the same time
- - metering:
- + update how activity info is parsed
- + update contract response structure
- + enable job by default
- - proxy: no_proxy defaults for link-local IMDS routes
- - util:
- + cache get_platform_info calls
- + fix

[Bug 1949636] [NEW] Impish update: upstream stable patchset 2021-11-03

2021-11-03 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1949634] [NEW] [SRU] ubuntu-advantage-tools (27.3 -> 27.4) Xenial, Bionic, Focal, Hirsute, Impish

2021-11-03 Thread Lucas Albuquerque Medeiros de Moura
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
This releases will turn on the metering job by default. The metering job will
report which services are being used to the contract server every 4 hours.
Since we already have the timer mechanism in place, we believe the substantial
risk for this release is that the job may not work
as intended and fail during the execution. However, this will not block any of
the other existing jobs from running, so it should be a low risk addition.

Furthermore, these are the additional functionalities we are adding:

* Make cc-eal a non-beta service
* Update ua fix return code:
  - exit 0 when fix is successfully applied and completed
  - exit 1 when fix cannot be applied
  - exit 2 when fix requires a reboot to complete
* Allow livepatch to be enabled together with fips-updates
* New security-status subcommand that lists potentially available security and
ESM updates
* Set PYTHONPATH during postinst to avoid problems that happen when users have
a custom python installation (LP: #1930121)

Additionally, we are also addressing some bugs we found along the way:

* Do not use proxy configuration when reaching clouds IMDS endpoint during
auto-attach operation
* Attach will save machine-id during operation
* Detach won't ask unnecessary questions
(For example, when ROS is enabled we don't want to notify user about
dependent services, since all services will be disabled anyway)

See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.

[Test Case]
The following development and SRU process was followed:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAdvantageToolsUpdates

The ubuntu-advantage-tools team will be in charge of attaching the artifacts and
console output of the appropriate run to the bug. ubuntu-advantage-tools team
members will not mark ‘verification-done’ until this has happened.

If the metering job fails it
should just add a new log entry into /var/log/ubuntu-advantage-timer.log.

For the ua fix update, we don't think we can cause a regression, since
the command was always returning 0, no matter what happened during the
execution. We believe the new return codes are better now.

The other fixes are either bug fixes or service changes (cc-eal) that
should not pose a regression risk on current behavior of the ua client,
since our tests are passing with those new changes.

[Discussion]
The addition of the new job was tested by the contracts team and it seems to be
working fine. However, we will need to keep an eye open to see if the metering
job is working as expected and delivering the desired information to the
contract backend.

[Changelog]

   * d/tools.postinst:
- hardcode python binary and PYTHONPATH (LP: #1930121)
- undo unnecessary log file creation
  * New upstream release 27.4
- cc-eal: remove beta flag
- cli:
+ attach will save machine-id during operation
+ detach won't ask unnecessary questions
+ new security-status subcommand lists potentially available
security and ESM updates (beta)
- fix:
+ exit 0 when fix is successfully applied and completed
+ exit 1 when fix cannot be applied
+ exit 2 when fix requires a reboot to complete
+ check reboot-required.pkgs for better reboot suggestions
- livepatch: allow livepatch and fips-updates at the same time
- metering:
+ update how activity info is parsed
  + update contract response structure
  + enable job by default
- proxy: no_proxy defaults for link-local IMDS routes
- util:
  + cache get_platform_info calls
  + fix machine-id fallback path on get_machine_id

[Bug 1888526] Re: (L)ubuntu breaks functionality by tmpfs for /tmp

2021-11-03 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Chris,

it would make everyone's life easier if you bothered to read and
understand the bug report before answering it.

I didn't say that calamares created installation images or videos.

I said that creating installation images or videos are applications that
break the idea of having a tmpfs on /tmp.

However, I've reported that bug upstream where they explained that
calamares has this behaviour since 2014 for no particular reason, just
because it has been like this since 2014, and it does this only after
detecting an SSD as a installation medium.

The upstream maintainers will take care of the issue. No need to wonder
about video production.

[Bug 1947192] Re: [BPO] version 0.185

2021-11-03 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

+ (updating description with the new BPO template:
+
  [Impact]
- This release contains both bug-fixes and new features and we would like to
make sure all of our developers have access to these improvements.
- The notable ones are:
- * bug 1934452
- * bug 1862372

- See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.
+ * This package is widely useful to developers, and is useful to have
+ the latest version in all releases

- [Test Plan]
+ [Scope]

- ubuntu-dev-tools contains a test suite that is ran using the SRU package for
each releases. This test suite's results are available here:
+ * This is backporting version 0.185 from Impish

- A successful run is required before the proposed package can be let into
- -updates.
+ * This backport is (currently) targeting Hirsute and Focal

- [Where problems could occur]
- In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
- aforementioned integration tests are attached to this bug.
-
-
+ * Bionic would be useful but the larger delta may require more changes
+ to backport

  [Other Info]
-
- [Changelog]
- comment 1 has changelog since version 0.176, which is the current version in
focal; version 0.180 in hirsute.
+
+ Two specific relevant bugs:
+  * bug 1934452
+  * bug 1862372

[Bug 1949631] [NEW] [needs-packaging] maliit-keyboard

2021-11-03 Thread sebula
Public bug reported:

[needs-packaging] maliit-keyboard

Maliit Keyboard is a free software virtual keyboard for Linux systems
with Wayland and X11 display servers. It supports many different
languages and emoji. It is implemented as a plug-in for Maliit
Framework.

Maliit Keyboard evolved from the reference keyboard plug-in and Ubuntu
Keyboard. Ubuntu Keyboard was a fork of the reference plugin which was
taking into account the special UI/UX needs of Ubuntu Phone.

URL: https://github.com/maliit/keyboard
License: The license of the combined work is LGPL-3.0-only.

Notes: "When installing maliit please make sure to install the newer
maliit-keyboard instead of the older maliit-framework...For example in
KDE Neon the package is called maliit-keyboard. If your distribution
does not yet provide a package, please file a bug reportTo enable
maliit in your Wayland session you need to edit your kwinrc
configuration file":

kwrite ~/.config/kwinrc

and add the following:

[Wayland]
InputMethod=/usr/share/applications/com.github.maliit.keyboard.desktop

[Bug 1949630] [NEW] kmail upgrade to 20.10 mysql corruption / data loss

2021-11-03 Thread SA
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 20.04->21.04-21.10

Once at 21.10 everything seem to work fine (yesterday) but today a
massive lot of updates were installed (not unexpected) however during
these updates kmail stopped working.

Once I got around to restarting kmail (no change) I discovered akonadi
had crashed and would not start again. Much digging around later it
seems it is because mysql will not start and much digging around later
it looks like the data in db_data is corrupt. Specifically there is
something wrong with ib_logfile0 and it seems to expect ib_logfile1 to
be present but it isn't.

So at this point I made a copy of this directory and trying loads of
different stuff (found on the internet) nothing has fixed it. Deleting
ib_logfile0 allows akonadi to start and I have my IMAP accounts but
several years worth of mail in my local mail directories has been lost.

I have no idea what has gone wrong. kmail crashed because akonadi
crashed. Akonadi crashed during a big bunch of updates after upgrading
from 21.04 to 21.10. Prior to the crash it appeared to be running fine
on 21.10.

I do not know where to start with recovery of my mail or where the bug
belongs or what the bug is only that akonadi borked during updates and
it appears I've lost emails as a result.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1949621] Re: libmbim cannot make use of Quectel EM120

2021-11-03 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
** Description changed:

  As reported on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-
broadband/ModemManager/-/issues/402, this modem (shipped in many new
Lenovo ThinkPad laptops) requires some specific handling as others new
modems to performs FCC unlock procedure.

A fix has been merged upstream: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-
  broadband/libmbim/-/merge_requests/125/diffs

Can we expect to see that merged in the current Ubuntu 21.10 ?
+
+ I understand it might require a backport, since they merged it against
+ 1.26 and it does not seems to apply cleanly on 1.24. I also suspect
+ upgrading libmbim to 1.26 is not acceptable for impish release.
