[Bug 1936295] Re: Faulty Elantech Trackpoint firmware unusable as it causes sudden cursor jump to an edge/corner on Lenovo Thinkpad X13, T14s, A475 --> Apply kernel patch to mitigate the FW bug
Is this patch already included in the Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri) kernel (in proposed packages) for testing? I installed the proposed kernel (5.13.0-23-generic) in Impish yesterday and the bug still exists. I still get sudden cursor jumps. If the patch is not yet in the Impish proposed kernel, when do you expect to have an Impish kernel update for testing? [Bug 1953252] Re: Since last three upgrades, by laptop drains the battery when sleeping, even a new one.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The ubuntu-release-upgrade tool upgrades you from one release (eg. 20.10) to the next release (ie. 21.04) and isn't involved with sleep (and users are advised to not use battery but use power during the process). Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future users from hitting the same bug. I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709 ** Package changed: ubuntu-release-upgrader (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1953252 Title: Since last three upgrades, by laptop drains the battery when sleeping, even a new one. [Bug 1945221] Re: CPU frequency stuck at minimum value..again Ubuntu 20.04.3
Your processor is indicating this: PROCHOT# or FORCEPR# Event (bit 2, RO) — Indicates whether PROCHOT# or FORCEPR# is being asserted by another agent on the platform. The related sticky log bit is also set. This is something I suspected a couple of months ago, on one of those askubuntu threads. As to why the bit does not go back to 0, I do not know, that would be your hardware. Please also provide the contents of MSR 0x1B2. Note that your processor is also indicating a past power limit, via the log bit. However, many do as they come out of the BIOS to the O.S., so it might be a red herring. [Bug 1953260] [NEW] simple-scan fails to connect to scanner while ippusbxd or ipp-usb are running
Public bug reported: I just upgraded from 18.04, where this wasn't a problem. On 20.04, whenever I try to scan a document with simple-scan while ippusbxd or ipp-usb are running (I tried with both) it will fail to connect to the printer and show the following message in a popup: "Failed to scan: Unable to connect to scanner". I'm not sure what causes this, but whenever I kill ippusbxd (sudo killall -9 ippusbxd) scanning works again. That breaks printing for me though, so now I have to do this awkward dance of killing and restarting ippusbxd to scan or print. I've found quite a bit of people having comparable problems with printers on Ubuntu 20.04 (see https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233521/printer-problems-after- installing-ubuntu-20-04 and https://askubuntu.com/questions/1258462/ubuntu-20-04-simple-scan-does- not-detect-scanner ) but this is the only workardoung for scanning that worked for me. Some people online recommended replacing ippusbxd with ipp-usb from https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pzz/xUbuntu_20.04/amd64/ but ipp-usb caused the same problem for me. [Bug 1945221] Re: CPU frequency stuck at minimum value..again Ubuntu 20.04.3
Since the intel_pstate driver is asking for 3.4 GHz, but the processor itself is only granting 0.8 GHz we now know that the throttling is within the processor and not externally driven. It might be related to what koba noted in comment #8, I don't know. The processor has MSRs with bits to indicate the reasons it is throttling, which is the next place to look. Myself, I am tried of decoding the common MSR bits, so I wrote a decoder. It is at (coded so as to avoid bots): double u double u double u dot smythies dot com /~doug/temp_kernel/ Both the c code and compiled, msr-decoder.c run as sudo: "sudo ./msr-decoder" and post the output here. There is also a log bit reset program, that clears held bits for ongoing work. If you do not want to use my programs, then read MSR's 0x19c, 0x1aa, 0x1b1, 0x16f, 0x1fc and post the contents here. As a side note: Your /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq:80 is not 50% of maximum as dictated by /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/min_perf_pct:50. [Bug 1953249] Re: UVD firmware for AMD Southern Islands (GCN 1) GPUs is missing
Per coincidence, I worked on this same bug today, as I'm hoping to try make use of the amdpro legacy OpenCL drivers, which will need amdgpu as a base. The issue is Ubuntu is providing newer kernel HWE stacks with amdgpu driver modules, but failing to keep related Linux firmware packages up to date and in lockstep. E.g. 20.04.3 LTS is based on kernel 5.11 from hirsute (21.04), but the linux-firmware collection is left outdated on 1.187.20 that came with kernel 5.4? https://packages.ubuntu.com/hirsute-updates/linux-firmware shows v 1.197.3, so I'd expect a HWE stack with 20.04.3 to also provide the same level of firmware updates for kernel 5.11. > I use UEFI and the module wasn't signed Perhaps installing the official deb/repo instead of upstream has a good shot at the firmware that gets added into initramfs being signed properly (one would hope!). I manged the following workaround, but my case is still legacy BIOS. curl -OL http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.197.3_all.deb sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.197.3_all.deb Extra hint: maybe download the deb from your closest mirror because this package is almost 200MB large. P.S. While most firmware is hopefully decoupled and backward compatible to use with older kernel modules/drivers, one never knows if a bug might show up by using very new firmware with much older modules, since you stray into a untested path between the firmware and the kernel modules. Hence I tried to match the Ubuntu release, kernel versions, and tested- at-the-time firmware more closely than just jumping to latest upstream firmware versions. Its similar but a kinda upside version of the older proprietary graphics driver blob hell that plagued Linux over the previous decade. Firmware is the other way round where the in-tree admgpu driver needs the firmware to provide a stable interface. Can't recall if Linux ever solved the lack of a stable in-kernel/versioned ABI between drivers and binary driver blobs. It's why AMD FGLRX proprietary drivers blobs were always hell, and AMD failed to keep up with ABI changes on the kernel and often didn't work with newer kernels, hence amdgpu became the new middle layer/foundation to bridge this ABI gap and add create a stable/presumably versioned ABI for AMD that the kernel developers never bothered to provide. Now AMD-pro software and extended driver blobs can rely on the opensource amdgpu parts to be less of a moving target as ABI changes on the kernel core will need to update/include required changes to amdgpu because amdgpu is now in-tree and should be tested in lockstep with other kernel changes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1953249 Title: UVD firmware for AMD Southern Islands (GCN 1) GPUs is missing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1953249/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
