[Bug 1956849] [NEW] Almost all USB ports suddenly stopped working; unbootable
Public bug reported: This package needs to be pulled NOW. It disables almost all USB-3.0 and USB-C ports completely. Even though I had automatic software updates turned OFF (or so I thought), my Mac Pro suddenly got a new kernel when I rebooted it this morning: Linux macpro-obs 5.11.0-44-generic #48~20.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 14 15:36:44 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux and it contains a P0 showstopper bug. Upon rebooting, I got dropped into the initrd prompt because Linux could not see the external USB drive that I'm booting from (WDBAGF5000AGY-WESN). I wasted an entire day figuring out what was wrong, and even went so far as to order a replacement SSD, planning to rebuild everything from scratch, because the drive failed to appear in every single USB port I tried. Then I discovered that a different SSD didn't work, either. At that point, I realized that something else was wrong, and I kept trying until I found one other port that worked. I was then able to boot and get dmesg and lsusb output. This kernel update broke not only the built-in ports, but also the ports on a generic USB-C PCIe card (Amazon B08PF8XR73). Mac Pro built-in USB-3.0(A) ports (2x): working Mac Pro built-in USB-C ports (4x): dead USB-C PCIe card USB-C ports (2x): dead USB-C PCIe card USB-3.0(A) ports (5x): dead All devices fail to appear in lsusb when attached to the port, including an Apple USB keyboard, an Anker USB-C Ethernet adapter, a WD SSD, and a Sandisk SSD. I'm going to roll back my kernel to a working kernel, but this package needs to be pulled NOW before it affects too many people. This is too catastrophic a bug to wait even a day. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1956849 Title: Almost all USB ports suddenly stopped working; unbootable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1956849/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1956844] [NEW] Missing library - libproj.so.19
Public bug reported: *** This bug may be related to different package, but it gets visible with digikam, so I put it here. *** When starting digikam is trying to access libproj.so.19. This version is not present in current system, as there is already a newer version (libproj.so.22). This prevents the application from running. The workaround is to make a symbolic link like that: cd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu sudo ln -s libproj.so.22.2.1 libproj.so.19 (or sudo ln -s libproj.so.22 libproj.so.19) Afterwards digikam can be run normally. [Bug 1927808] Re: rtw88_8821ce causes freeze
I just would like to add my (newbie) observation on the similar problem (maybe it can be useful for developers). I have laptop "HP ProBook 455 G7 (1F3M4EA)" with WiFi card RTL8822CE. My system is LinuxMint 20.2 with kernel 5.13.0-23-generic. I noticed that old routers with 2.4 GHz work fine with laptop (i.e. wifi problems happens rarely, one a day or less). But in the case I use modern router with 5GHz (fibra, optical line) I have the following issue. From time to time, wifi networking is stopped. Network manager in tray shows wifi is connected but with 0% power. With 90% of probability it happens when I use speedtest site. After this happens I can not reconnect, I can not restart network manager and then reconnect (I tried restart it by different ways I found in internet: systemctl restart network-manager ; sudo killall NetworkManager ; sudo ifconfig wlp2s0 down , sudo ifconfig wlp2s0 up; sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager.service ...) only reboot allow to use wifi again. After wifi stopping I see the dmesg output contains a lot of lines like these: [12259.905821] rtw_8822ce :02:00.0: timed out to flush pci tx ring[1] [12260.053680] rtw_8822ce :02:00.0: timed out to flush queue 0 [12260.197672] rtw_8822ce :02:00.0: timed out to flush queue 1 [12260.337653] rtw_8822ce :02:00.0: timed out to flush queue 2 I also tried to follow the suggestion: "Setting /etc/modprobe.d/rtw88_pci.conf to contain options rtw88_pci disable_aspm=1" It does not help. Another dmesg log - disconnection happens with 2.4 GHz router. Only reboot helped: ... [Bug 1956840] [NEW] /usr/lib/libgdal.a cannot be linked into any program
Public bug reported: libgdal-dev includes a static library at /usr/lib/libgdal.a. But this library is broken: there is no configuration which allows you to actually link a program against it. Therefore, it should be removed. Right now, it only serves to waste people's time as they try to statically link against a broken library. Here's a small testcase. Consider broken.c: #include #include int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { printf("%s\n", GDALVersionInfo("RELEASE_NAME")); return(0); } This is the simplest C program that can link against libgdal. You can build and run it easily: gcc -o broken broken.c `gdal-config --cflags` `gdal-config --libs` ./broken which happily prints 3.2.2. That program is fine! But note that it is dynamically linked: ldd ./broken|wc -l indicates that it is linked against 116 shared object libraries. What if we want to statically link against libgdal.a? We proceed as before, but this time we add the output of `gdal-config --dep-libs` to include the static library dependencies gcc -o broken broken.c `gdal-config --cflags` -Wl,-Bstatic `gdal-config --libs` `gdal-config --dep-libs` And now we get this error message: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lheif /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -larmadillo /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpoppler /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lqhull /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkmlbase /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkmldom /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkmlengine /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkmlxsd /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkmlregionator /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lopenjp2 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lnetcdf /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -logdi /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcharls collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status This actually makes sense: in the GDAL build process, the static and shared libraries are built together from the exact same configuration. They have the same dependencies. But that very large dependency set includes a bunch of libraries for which no static library is available. There is no libarmadillo.a or libpoppler.a available in any package of the distribution for example. So there's no way you could ever statically link against libgdal.a which depends on those libraries. ** Affects: gdal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1956840 Title: /usr/lib/libgdal.a cannot be linked into any program To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdal/+bug/1956840/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The other problem is I suspect that Ubuntu does not actually fix bugs. They just act as a pass-through for Debian and apply patches from Debian. This causes a problem since Debian is unlikely to accept direct bug reports pertaining to Ubuntu, but Debian is doing all the work. Maintaining ImageMagick for Debian is a huge amount of work. > So I can see that Memory and Disk are now far more constrained than when on Xubuntu 16.04. A problem with ImageMagick is that you need to find the documentation which pertains to your exact version since ImageMagick is always in flux. Debian/Ubuntu are providing ImageMagick 6 which is considered to be "legacy" and has its own web site (although since ImageMagick is always in flux the web site might not match the software). I am the developer/maintainer of the competing GraphicsMagick software, which I would immediately suggest except that it does not directly write MP4 files. You would need to find a way to convert from a format that GraphicsMagick writes to MP4 (e.g. ffmpeg). Both ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick are very poor at dealing with large video/animation streams because they buffer the data up before writing anything. I see that this discovers the files which are actually searched for and used: MAGICK_DEBUG=configure convert -list resource On my own system I recall editing the Ubuntu default policy.xml file directly since it was hindering my ability to reasonably compare ImageMagick with GraphicsMagick. Feel free to try installing the 'graphicsmagick' package and see if it works any better for your needs. Unfortunately, I see that the provided GraphicsMagick dates from February, 2020 so it is a bit old. [Bug 1956642] Re: convert crash during operation leaving partial output file
Yes Bob, I knew convert is a part of ImageMagick. I was having difficulty locating the correct package within this bug tracker. Thanks for explaining how to show what resources convert is allowed to use. Following is the output from my three systems: Xubuntu 16.04: $ convert -list resource File Area MemoryMap Disk Thread Throttle Time 768 16.584GB 7.7226GiB 15.445GiB unlimited2 0 unlimited $ Xubuntu 20.04: $ convert -list resource Resource limits: Width: 16KP Height: 16KP List length: 18.446744EP Area: 128MP Memory: 256MiB Map: 512MiB Disk: 1GiB File: 768 Thread: 12 Throttle: 0 Time: unlimited $ Xubuntu 22.04: $ convert -list resource Resource limits: Width: 16KP Height: 16KP List length: unlimited Area: 128MP Memory: 256MiB Map: 512MiB Disk: 1GiB File: 768 Thread: 2 Throttle: 0 Time: unlimited $ So I can see that Memory and Disk are now far more constrained than when on Xubuntu 16.04. [Bug 1926637] Re: no wifi icon in Status tray plugin on login
Also happening here on xubuntu 21.10 with xfce4-panel 4.16.3 on a default install. Status Tray Plugin isn't showing any icons (no wifi or bluetooth) on most reboot and logins. Sometimes it does, but mostly not. Both bluetooth and wifi are indeed working.
