[Bug 1945590] Re: Thinkpad E14 Gen2: Kernel panic with trackpad and trackpoint enabled

2022-01-10 Thread Amit Aronovitch
(a) confirmed: -25 does not include the patch (kernel panic on E14 G2).

In impish git repo, master (tagged -25) is branching out of -23.
Whereas -24 tag is still in `master-next` branch.

(b) I cannot find -24 in proposed. Actually, looking right now, it seems
like the whole `binary-amd64` section is missing (here:
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/impish-proposed/main/ ).

[Bug 1956768] Re: [MIR] fwupd-efi

2022-01-10 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
** Description changed:

fwupd was split into fwupd and fwupd-efi as part of bug 1955386, however
the fwupd-efi package is in universe. As the previous fwupd package was
already in main, the fwupd-efi source package that stemmed from it
should also be brought into main.

Both fwupd-signed and fwupd have a Recommends on fwupd-unsigned, which
is provided by the fwupd-efi source package.
+
+ [Availability]
+ The package fwupd-efi/source, fwupd-signed/amd64, fwupd-unsigned/amd64, is
already in Ubuntu universe.
+ It currently builds and works for architectures: amd64
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fwupd-efi
+
+ [Rationale]
+ fwupd is a utility that upgrades bios and lots of firmware of HW components
so that they got the last fix from HW vendor.
+
+ It has already existed in main for quite a long time. The only reason we
+ need MIR is the source code split to kind of de-couple the efi
+ and user-space utility.
+
+ [Security]
+ Given this is a source code split, the security-related issue should have
+ be properly handled previously.
+
+ [Quality assurance - function/usage]
+ Same as above. If you need further detail on a certain point, please kindly
state your request.
+
+ [Quality assurance - maintenance]
+ Same as above. If you need further detail on a certain point, please kindly
state your request.
+
+ [Quality assurance - testing]
+ Given this is an EFI app pkg, and it upgrades OS bios, it's not so trivial to
test. We do have certain test steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/firmware-updates.
+
+ [Quality assurance - packaging]
+ fwupd-efi-1.1$ lintian --pedantic
+ E: fwupd-efi changes: bad-distribution-in-changes-file unstable
+ W: fwupd-amd64-signed-template: empty-binary-package
+ P: fwupd-efi source: silent-on-rules-requiring-root
+ P: fwupd-efi source: uses-debhelper-compat-file
+
+ [UI standards]
+ This is an EFI app, it provides text mode UI in English and no user
interactivity.
+
+ [Dependencies]
+ $ apt-cache depends fwupd-signed
+ fwupd-signed
+ Recommends: secureboot-db
+ Recommends: fwupd-unsigned
+ Recommends: fwupd
+
+ All it’s depends is in main after this MIR is done.
+
+ [Standards compliance]
+ All good per what I know.
+
+ [Maintenance/Owner]
+ It’s properly and actively maintained from upstream:
+
+ https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd
+
+ [Background information]
+ Given this is a source code split re-MIR, I think it’s quite obvious.
+ Related links are provided above.

[Bug 1946359] Re: [MIR] vulkan-tools

2022-01-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
While this is for CPC, Server team members work on it. Thereby I know
that while obviously we'd appreciate a faster review, this can happen
past 22.04 - but not much later. Also we have to face that the >=Focal
tasks still have some TODOs to even enter security review queue -
therefore this can't be of "Panic we need it now priority".

The intention is to have the required TODOs resolved by ~April and to
get security review completed afterwards by Mid 2022. Setting priority
to Medium (can be high once required TODOs are done), and milestone to
22.04 (the latest currently existing milestone).

Also - since the current task on >=Focal is not on Lukas but on Miriam
I'm assigning the task to her.

[Bug 1852071] Re: [HP ZBook Studio G5, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS] Brightness function keys works as microphone mute function keys

2022-01-10 Thread jeremyszu
From this ticket, I'm awared there are many HP platforms shared this
issue.

Here is the platform list I found here:
1. HP ZBook Studio G5 by Marcin [1]
2. a HP Elite Dragonfly by Michael
3. a HP Elitebook X360 1040 by Nova [2]

If you could help to find your machines on the Ubuntu certification
page[3] then it will help (please also share if any component is
different).

Back to this issue, we did face this issue during the certification on
some HP machines and as the comment#19,20, it's also HP told us the way
to workaround this issue.

FWIK, this issue is caused by HP's firmware.
HP has a windows application which will configure the HP EC (embedded
controller) as a something like Windows mode.
In this mode, EC will send the different keycode when you pressed the function
key.
After pressing the power button roughly 15 seconds, it will reset EC to
something like default(normal?) mode which working good in Linux.

That's why it impacts the dual boot users as you reported.

For comment#24, we communicated with HP many times and would like to ask HP to
provide the detailed specification of what HP did in Windows then we could
implement it in Linux as well but unfortunately, HP didn't provide further
information and announced the issue is fixed in latest BIOS (01.04.01 in the
other HP platform - 440 G7).
Thus, could you please help to upgrade your BIOS to latest to see if the issue
presents?
If so and if your machine is listed on Ubuntu certification page[3] then I can
help you to escalate this issue.

BTW, this issue is only happen on "a machine did boot to Windows with HP
application".
Thus, it'll probably not happen in Ubuntu certification process.
If any of you meet the issue on Ubuntu certified platforms then feel free to
report a bug.

[Bug 1948748] Re: [MIR] swtpm

2022-01-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi,
in preparation for prioritizing various MIR items blocked on security review I
was setting those items of the server Team that are essential for 22.04 to
"Critical + Milestone @22.02 (=Feature Freeze)".
This is a foundation item, but I think it qualifies for the same, if you agree
I'd ask to please set the status accordingly.

[Bug 1926321] Re: [MIR] telegraf

2022-01-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Backuppc and Fence agents are done quite a while ago, and since this
waited for so long we'd really appreciate getting this completed.
Nevertheless - makes me sad to say - of the many reviews blocked this is
one we could survive for a bit longer. Hence setting Prio:High and mid
year Milestone (last is 22.04 atm).

[Bug 1956212] Re: No Diodon applet in the Notification Zone

2022-01-10 Thread Oliver Sauder
I have a feeling the issue is most likely not Diodon related but
indicator related.

So to confirm this do you have another app which uses the libayatana-
indicator and see whether that shows up?

Another idea which came to my mind is that you might have a different
theme on the two different machines and it cannot find the icon in one
of them. But most likely this is not the case but wanted to throw in
there to be sure.

[Bug 1957029] [NEW] Accidental undo after copying a remote file will delete data

2022-01-10 Thread butting
Public bug reported:

If a file has been copied from a remote source or external file system
which is then unmounted, a ctrl-Z in Caja will delete the file with no
prompt for confirmation.

To reproduce:

1. Copy file from a remote drive.
2. Unmount drive.
3. Press ctrl-Z or select Edit->Undo.

An irreversible undo should either be ignored or ask for confirmation.
If the original file has been removed from the external media (or if it
was only transient on that file system), then it's gone forever with no
options for recovery.

[Bug 1957024] Re: pam-mkhomedir does not honor private home directories

2022-01-10 Thread Andrew Lowther
Here is a demonstration as requested in Discourse. These steps were run
on a stock image of Ubuntu Impish taken from https://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/impish/current/.

Showing the inconsistent behavior of the default settings if the goal is
private home directories. Both adduser and useradd create a home
directory that is private but pam_mkhomedir.so does not.

# enable pam_mkhomedir.so configuration
pam-auth-update --enable mkhomedir
# create a user with adduser that creates the home directory
adduser --disabled-password --gecos adduser homemadebyadduser
# create a user with useradd that creates the home directory
useradd --create-home homemadebyuseradd
# create a user with useradd that does *not* create the home directory so that
pam_mkhomedir.so can create it
useradd --no-create-home homemadebymkhomedir
# trigger pam_mkhomedir.so to create the home directory
su - homemadebymkhomedir -c exit

The result is inconsistent permissions on the home directories.
root@ubuntu:~# ls -al /home
total 24
drwxr-xr-x 6 rootroot4096 Jan 11 03:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 19 rootroot4096 Jan 11 03:13 ..

homemadebyuseradd
drwxr-x--- 4 ubuntu ubuntu 4096 Jan 11 03:15 ubuntu

Configuring pam_mkhomedir.so to be consistent with the other tools.

# update pam_mkhomedir.so configuration
sed -i -e "s/pam_mkhomedir.so$/pam_mkhomedir.so umask=0027/"
/usr/share/pam-configs/mkhomedir
# enable mkhomedir again
pam-auth-update --enable mkhomedir
# create a user with useradd that does *not* create the home directory so that
pam_mkhomedir.so can create it
useradd --no-create-home homemadebymkhomedirpatch
# trigger pam_mkhomedir.so to create the home directory
su - homemadebymkhomedirpatch -c exit

The result is the permissions are consistent with the other tools.

[Bug 1956888] Re: can't manually sort bookmarks anymore

2022-01-10 Thread Saroumane
Problem reproduced with a fresh Ubuntu 21.10 Live USB (booted with X, whereas I
use wayland on a daily basis) :
with both 2 snap versions of chromium available in Ubuntu store :
97.0.4692.71 (latest/stable)
98.0.4758.9 (latest/edge)

My hardware is quite classic, so yes I'm probably not alone to suffer of this
broken drag'n'drop :
Ryzen 3600X
Radeon RX 5700 XT
4K monitor (I tried to put it in 1080p, with no scaling : nothing changed)

[Bug 1899854] Re: [SRU] Move to Canonical's GeoIP Service

2022-01-10 Thread Chris Guiver
Booted a Lubuntu focal daily (2021-12-18 so not latest) on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

ensured proposed was enabled, then `apt upgrade calamares` & let it
upgrade what it wanted. This included

calamares-settings-ubuntu-common | 1:20.04.2.1 | focal-proposed/universe

started calamares installer & it correctly detected my location as
Melbourne, AU. I didn't complete install, exited & rebooted

-- without change

booted same ISO on same box, but started calamares without change.
package on ISO & this time is

calamares-settings-ubuntu-common | 1:20.04.2 | focal/universe

started calamares installer & it correctly detected my location as
Melbourne, AU. I didn't complete install.

Both worked for me; no issues with change.

[Bug 1956412] Re: crash reports don't go to proper dev team

2022-01-10 Thread erik flister
why would you say you won't fix this? it would be easy to implement
systems and policies for ubuntu modders and upstream teams to
coordinate. at minimum, give upstream access to the crash reports,
issue trackers, etc.

it doesn't take manpower, you don't have to test. all you have to do is
forward by default, or at least provide access. if upstream wants to
ignore the forwards, that's on them. don't ruin it for everyone by
assuming you have to accommodate the least cooperative teams.

i doubt that the vast majority of reports have to do with ubuntu mods
anyway -- they almost all belong upstream. the majority case is the
case you should design for.

it is a huge shame to take your users' reports and efforts in reporting
issues, and let them go to waste. the spirit of oss is a partnership
with users, upstream teams, and not wasting anyone's contributions and
efforts.

as an example please note the crash i reported regarding gnome-remote-
desktop. where did it go? how do we find it? it had nothing to do
with any ubuntu mod. how do i get it to that upstream gnome team? how
do we give them access to the system holding it?

[Bug 1957024] [NEW] pam-mkhomedir does not honor private home directories

2022-01-10 Thread Alex Murray
Public bug reported:

As reported in https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/private-home-directories-
for-ubuntu-21-04-onwards/19533/13:

A common situation is to have a central set of users (e.g. in LDAP) and
use pam_mkhomedir.so to create the home directory when the user first
logs in.

These changes do not cover this situation. The default configuration of
pam_mkhomedir.so will result in a home directory created with 0755
permissions.

To make pam_mkhomedir.so create a home directory by default with
permissions consistent with the other tools then a umask argument can be
added to the pam_mkhomedir.so module in the file /usr/share/pam-
configs/mkhomedir. I believe this would have to be done before enabling
the module. The file is part of the libpam-modules package.

[Bug 1957022] [NEW] gadmin kills openvpn processes!!

2022-01-10 Thread ale
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm on Debian but I think the problem is not so far in Ubuntu too.
If you try to install gadmin-openvpn and set a server and client configuration
it installs some scripts in /et/init.d that kill any other openvpn process at
start-up.
So if you have problems with gadmin and want to revert to openvpn normal use
without any "helping" gui you can remain for 2-3 days awake in front of PC
banging your head into the wall while trying to understand why openvpn is not
working, as it's like to find a needle in a haystack.
So, if you want to uninstall gadmin-openvpn-client and gadmin-openvpn-server
you MUST delete these two shit persistent files too, not included in the file
package list:
- /etc/init.d/gadmin-openvpn-client
- /etc/init.d/gadmin-openvpn-server

Hope this can help.
Ale

[Bug 1956412] Re: crash reports don't go to proper dev team

2022-01-10 Thread Brian Murray
There are frequently modifications made to Ubuntu packages which
upstream developers are not aware of or the Ubuntu version of a package
can be one or more versions behind the latest upstream version. For
these reasons the crash reports first come to Ubuntu and ideally are
then forwarded to the upstream developers. I say ideally as we don't
have the manpower to test and forward every bug report to the upstream
developers.

[Bug 1957002] [NEW] tp-link AC1300 not working in 21.10

2022-01-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

A driver exists on github, but is not available in ubuntu 21.10

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/208022
describes where to find it and how to install it:

git clone https://github.com/cilynx/rtl88x2bu.git
cd rtl88x2bu
VER=$(sed -n 's/\PACKAGE_VERSION="\(.*\)"/\1/p' dkms.conf)
sudo rsync -rvhP ./ /usr/src/rtl88x2bu-${VER}
sudo dkms add -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo dkms build -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo dkms install -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo modprobe 88x2bu

Would be great you could add it to 22.04.
Thanks

[Bug 1951954] Re: ua refresh "Unexpected error(s) occurred"

2022-01-10 Thread Renan Rodrigo
** Attachment added: "Output of the script execution"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-tools/+bug/1951954/+attachment/5553195/+files/output

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
If /snap/bin is not present in the PATH, UA will fail when trying to run it.
This is fixed by specifying the full path (/snap/bin/canonical-livepatch) to
every call from UA side.

  [Test Case]
To reproduce the bug, run `sudo env PATH="/usr/bin" ua refresh` on an
attached bionic machine.

Then, install the 27.5 version from the staging PPA
  (https://launchpad.net/~ua-client/+archive/ubuntu/staging)

Repeating the same command as above runs without an error.
+
+ There is a test script attached to this bug, as well as execution
+ output, to show the above solution works.

  [Regression Potential]
It could only cause problems if canonical-livepatch is in a different place
than /snap/bin, and it should not happen in any installation.

  [Original Description]

  root@somehost:~# ua refresh
  Unexpected error(s) occurred.
